so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning everybody. today investigators looking into a freak accident that kills a worker at the stevens creek quarry. for the record, this marks the second death at a south bay job site in four days. "today in the bay's" arturo santiago is live in cupertino with new information. good morning, arturo. >> reporter: good morning, jon. workers will be showing up for their shifts at the quarry right around 7:00 this morning. most of these workers will return knowing they have lost one of their own. the accident apparently happened yesterday afternoon at around 1:00. the worker was operating a piece of heavy quifment and lost control according to san francisco clara county sheriff's deputies. he was taken to santa clara hospital where he was pronounced dead. this is the second workplace death to occur this week.

donald white was hit by an elevator counterer weight in santa clara. there was a safety meeting yesterday where there was a moment of silence for donald white. back to this latest incident here at the quarry, the victim has not yet been identified, although cal osha has been alerted and they should be looking into the matter. live in cupertino, arturo santiago. "today in the bay." 6:02. new video on what fire crews are calling a suspicious house fire in oakland. the home on 73rd avenue near international boulevard went up in flames shortly before 1:00 this morning. we just spoke to battalion chief moments ago and she says threatening graffiti was found on the home and the fire started outside near the back of the house. neighbors say the graffiti said "stop snitching" and showed up on the front side of the home yesterday. no one was home at the time of the fire. no injuries to report.

the exact cause is still under investigation. protest ergs in san francisco say they will be back. some of the people who occupied a farm on octavia street in san francisco say they're planning to take the land back tonight. they'll be meeting up at 6:00 to try to retake the lot. yesterday morning we showed you some of the protesters literally pulled right out of trees by police and they were forced to leave. they were upset over proposed development on that lot. a late night turned into an early morning for a group of south bay parents angry about how their school district is being run. they attend add public meeting at the santa clara unified school district headquarters where they demanded change with the school board. a group it's calling toxic. that meeting finished only about five hours today. to marla tellez has more on the story. >> reporter: last night's contentious board meeting lasted seven hours and began at 6:00 thursday evening.

after three hours of public comment from those concerned parents, it finally ended at 1:00 this morning. our camera capturing that standing-room-only crowd, parents spilling into the hallways as they waited to voice their concern overall most the entire board of education for santa clara unified school district. there are a total of seven members on the board. parents are taking direct aim at four of them including the president, christine koltermann, also ina bendis, michelle ryan and chris stampolis. they say these four created a toxic environment by using intimidation and micromanaging tactics which led to an exodus of administrators since november, 15 administrators left the district, that's 20% of administrators districtwide. last night parents presented the board with a petition calling for the school board members to resign. >> it is unbelievably bad. you only have to see one meeting and understand the agenda of these four board members is just

out ranl ous. >> much of the outrage is directed at chris stampolis who says he and his colleagues were elected to make change including student pro fish see, especially with latino students. >> i think there are administrators leaving because of the results of the election. i think from a community perspective, that's a great thing. >> reporter: that petition brought forward last night was signed by more than 2,000 people and showed a vote of no confidence for those members. what's next? now there's talk of a recall. to make that happen, parents need signatures from 20% of registered voters within the district. >> vice president joe biden and his wife, dr. jill biden both heading for the bay area today. this morning they'll fly into camp pendleton visiting with children who lost loved ones serving in the military. then the couple heading to san francisco to attend a fund-raiser for the democratic national committee. this will take place at the home of the ceo of the san

francisco-based company binwise. that starting tonight at 6:00. the vice president's visit coming just one week after president obama stopped by the bay area for fund-raisers and a speech on the affordable care act. you'll recall plenty of protesters greeted the president at a fund-raiser in palo alto last week. it is expected to be no different for vice president biden today. environmental groups say they will protest near tonight's fund-raiser at 25th avenue and el camino delmar in the sea cliff neighborhood. they are calling on the vice president to oppose the keystone xl pipeline that would take oil from canada, across the u.s. to the gulf coast. 6:06. christina loren says the perfect day for a cool dad's weekend. >> that's right. no matter where your dad lives, don't forget about him this sunday. temperatures here in the bay area. if you have the luxury of being able to stay here, have dad in town with you, it's just going

take us on the rode with you, folks. we fit right wherever your radio is. the approach the bay bridge, the metering lights over the roadway. you see the backup there. folks are let loose to the right side of the screen. that's how we can tell metering lights are on. chp will update that in a few minutes. we saw it just as it happened. we'll show you the map off the berkeley curve. the incline moving slowly. a stall reported at treasure island that has cleared. so far an easy drive out of the maze. 580 had early slowing because of late construction. things are evened out, a new development in the last few minutes. we told you 580 westbound at north livermore, a stalled out minivan and that should be off to the shoulder. we'll watch for chp reports and let you know. but so far it sounds like everybody is safe out of the lanes. we'll move to the south bay. the first burst we saw at 101 northbound, looks like it's cleared. that's good. pretty steady flow of traffic

commute. we'll update the incident over in livermore coming up. let's take a look at today's top stories, cal osha looking into a second workplace death. deputies saying a workers was killed yesterday at stevens creek quarry in cupertino when a piece of heavy equipment malfunctioned. that worker has not yet been identified. at least 24 people are recovering after a deck at a waterfront sports bar collapsed last night. officials say there were about 100 people on that deck when it fell into the water last night. at least two people werew3 critically injured. it will be a high profile day, vice president joe biden will be here in the bay area. he and his wife, dr. jill biden, will attend a fund-raiser at the home of the ceo of san francisco-based company binwise. the vice president's visit coming a week after president obama was here raising funds for the democratic party.

>> new this morning, the british government is alerting airlines around the world, urging them not to allow edward snowden to board flights to the u.k. snowden is a former u.s. intelligence contractor who leaked top secret thfgs about u.s. surveillance programs. snowden is believed to be in hong kong. he's yesterday to be charged of a crime and no warrants have been issued for his arrest. 100 bay area leaders flew into london. >> from the creator of craigslist to lieutenant governor doug newsom. >> a picture tweeted out as some of the group opened the london stock exchange. notice way over on the far, far left, one of the executives there, he's wearing google glass. they also met with prime minister david cameron as well. back here at home, new revelations that yahoo! fought the federal government, resisting demands it turn over user data to the nsa. ultimately the fisa court won.

yahoo! lawyers went down fighting till this was issued. yahoo! cannot comment because the super secret court is super secret. the federal government said it was a legal requirement for yahoo! to turn over user data. there is a historical irony here, because back in 2007 then yahoo! ceo jerry yang was called before congress and verbally crucified for turning over user data to the chinese government to adhere to chinese law. the late co. congressman tom lantos who was persecuted by the yacht zis called yang, quote, a moral pig many and spineless for turning over the data. at the same time members of congress asked yang to endorse a law to make it a crime for u.s. tech companies to turn over customer data to any government. perhaps the two cases are apples and oranges. the nsa wants aggregate user data. the chinese government wanted

individual data, interesting nonetheless. another report says microsoft waits to tell you about security bugs in its software so it could tell the feds first. bloomberg says this morning two u.s. officials confirm the nsa can and does use the vulnerabilities to try to tap into servers and computers before they're patched. the cooperation goes both ways. bloomberg also reports one of the ways google was able to accuse china of hacking into google servers is because a man was given temporary clearance to see intelligence data. >> thank you very much. we've been talking about this this morning. it's no secret that real estate is certainly at a premium, especially in san francisco. apparently that includes the parking spots. >> in a big way. >> good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning. it's not even carpeted or anything for that price. the car is not included. if you've got $82,000 burning a hole in your pocket, this could pay off? the long run. at the height of the real estate market, the spot in here, the exact same one went for about $95,000. it's in a great location. if you compare this with prices in other big cities, some people might consider it a deal. it's on townsend street right near at&t park and the embarcadero. no front door, no yard, only an 8 x 12 space, the hottest property in san francisco. according to the "chronicle" with the jump in home prices, the parking spaces are going up, too. they can add about $100,000 to the sale of a condo or they can rent for about $450 a month. compare this to boston where it's getting really high. a recent irs auction fetched about $560,000 for two parking

spots, a bidding war that started at about $42,000 kept going up and up. some there actually selling for $250,000 each. a recent spot in new york city was listed at $1 million. it's unclear if anyone actually got that. but this, that is just the start, the $82,000. you would also have to pay property taxes and hoa dues as well. wanted to mention, we just saw a woman park here right next to me on the street. her meter, during an event, about seven bucks. so there are other options out there. live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> give her a treat. go put a quarter in on us. >> i'm busy trying to count how many quarters you can get with $82,000. >> that's a lot. >> need a wagon to carry all that. 6:18. christina loren is back. i heard you this morning using the word spectacular a lot. >> it's going to be really nice. in that transitional period between spring and summertime. summertime officially arrives next week. as we head through today, it's

going to feel nice and warm. warmer than any day so far. i'll drop you back off to spring averages for your father's day weekend. thanks for waking up on a friday morning. hope you're feeling good like we are. take a live look here, golden gate bridge. this weekend we'll see spectators on the beautiful bridge. the weather is going to be really nice, especially in the city by the bay. temperatures right now in the 50s, at 60 straight up right now in napa. meanwhile 48 degrees in gilroy. micro climates are making an appearance this morning. as we head throughout the day, high pressure will build in and will be stronger than any other day this week. that means temperatures will end up close to 90 degrees, not quite 90, but close to 90 degrees on the way in places like fairfield, antioch, you know the drill there. if you want the best weather today, lit be at the beach. look at santa cruz. 2:00 p.m., room temperatures readings. it will be breezy out there, not too bad. by 4:00 p.m., 75 degrees.

south bay itself, the northbound routes in the commute direction, very little commute going on right now. speeds coming down to about 55 at the very worst north of mckee. 87 into downtown, that's a slow section, about 57, 58 miles from what i'm reading. >> we'll take you east of here. we're looking at westbound 580. that stalled minivan sounds like it made its way off to the shoulder. no additional slowing on the buildup. you're okay heading toward north livermore. fine in the western area. but east out of the altamont pass, still slow. that's a typical friday pattern as well. farther north, highway 4 isolated to pittsburgh bay point. that's good. that crash still at l street but off to the shoulder. metering lights are on. a slow drive up the incline and

we have to check palo alto, the peninsula with a live shot as well. traffic is very light on the northbound side. the southbound side, we call it the sunrise slowdown, you'll see slowing as folks come through the trees around the ben, that sun gets you in the eyes and folks hit the brakes. prepare for that. we can tell you a popular pizza chain taking deliveries to new heights. we say new heights, we mean that in a literal sense. domino's testing the lpñdomi copter. this is video from a recent test flight near london. do keep in mind, you don't want to get your hopes up here just yet. using drones for commercial use, banned in most countries including right here in the u.s. but domino's, the company developing the domi copter says it is very serious about making flying pizzas a reality. >> you stick your money back in there, give it a little tip

hook elementary school, six months ago, december 14, one we will never forget. new reports this morning that the obama administration will be putting weapons into the hands of syrian rebels. the white house now says the syrian government has crossed the red line by using chemical weapons against its own people. "today in the bay's" tracie potts joins us from capitol hill. >> reporter: high, laura. the president said he was waiting on conclusive evidence as of thursday. the white house says they got it. discussions say the president is authorizing the u.s. to send weapons to syria's rebels in that civil war. what we don't know is how soon or how many or what type of weapons may be sent. you can see this civil war is becoming more and more dangerous by the day. new video of some of the violence in and around damascus. now we also have word this

morning from damascus that syria's foreign minister calls this is a caravan of lies and a flagrant double standard by the united states saying that the u.s. is treatingñ%i syria differently than other areas that have dealt with terrorist groups. the free syrian army, one of the rebel groups, say this is long overdue. we wait to find out more details about where the obama administration is heading next. >> very interesting. thank you very much, tracie. new this morning, a convicted child molester in san francisco county jail this morning awaiting expedition to georgia. he could be in court some time today. marcus tillman was recently sentenced to 40 years in prison for what police are calling a heinous crime against his very own children. u.s. marshals capturing tillman at the cup of joe coffee house at the corner of leavenworth and sutter in san francisco. that happened earlier this week. tillman was using a fake i.d.

but ultimately admitted to his true identity once he was confronted. >> 6:32. police in the upscale quiet town of hillsborough are on the lookout for a would-be burglar. police say a woman was inside her home on summit drive near bella vista when she heard noises coming from her back door. it happened sunday afternoon. the woman says she saw a man who resembles the man in this sketch trying to break into her house. the man reportedly took off when he saw the woman inside. police say he was wearing a white real madrid soccer jersey with the letters b-w-i-n on the jersey. a judge determined yesterday that lesley gardner is, in fact, mentally competent. prosecutors say he stole a $2.7 million yacht "darling" back in march bringing a couple with him on board.2p

the yacht then ran aground at lynd march beach just hours later. gardner's defense team says he is delusional and believed the yacht was his. he remains in jail on more than a million dollars bail. let's switch gears a little bit and talk about the forecast for today and beyond. it's been really nice. it's going to continue into the weekend i understand. >>u.x it's going to be a nice weekend. today will be the warmest day of the week. i want to start with this picture of where it will be the hottest. this a live look at sunol. you can see we do have those hills turning brown, but not as brown as the hills in southern california. as we head through this weekend, we'll see a good strong onshore flow. a barbecue, we don't have high fire danger. 52 degrees in san francisco, 53 in oakland. a barbecue, something dad probably wants to do on sunday. "today in the bay" works like this, we're going to get to that forecast in just a minute.

today will be the warmest, like i said before at the coast, it is flag day. 70 degrees there. old glory getting pick up. as the winds pick up between 3:00 and 6:00. that's when they'll be the strongest. you'll hit about 86 degrees inland with changes just around the corner. i will take you through those changes coming up. first want to take a look at your drive. school is out for summer, mike. >> exactly, except for my son's school. that's the last one to get out. next wednesday. hang on, mason. we're looking over here as fox hang on to the commute. christine showed you the dry hills there. we're focusing on the traffic at the bottom of the screen. we'll show you the map. in the area, south 680 right around 84. that's north of the camera shot over the hill. reports of a garbage bag or two flying around lanes. be careful of that. it doesn't sound like debris is scattering. you notice that 680 and 84, both green into the area. it's lighter flow of traffic.

traditionally we have a later build for any type of commute. in livermore, an early start. still slow, the disabled vehicle west 580 at north livermore is off to the shoulder. still there in the chp reports. so i'll still leave it on my maps. no effect as far as the speeds go. look at west 580 basically at the limit toward pleasant ton and dublin. we'll look at slowing through the south bay, northbound 101. slow through the airport area. we'll look also toward oakland, past that airport and a smooth drive past the coliseum as well. a live look at 880, traffic very light. no problems for oakland. the north bay, southbound 101 following smoothly. you're picking up a lot of company. just slowing in novato, guys. it is 6:36 right now. still ahead, a scary scene here, a deck collapses at a crowded waterfront bar. we have new details about the chaotic rescue efforts at a viewing party for the nba finals. plus the most destructive

we'll take you live to mcminnville, a town believed to be hit by a tornado today. we're getting reports here this is a town about 45 miles southwest of portland, a population of 32,000. the good news, no reports of any injuries. this tornado rated an ef 1 on the scale there, so not too serious. it did at least rip a roof off a building, sending debris onto power lines. we'll keep you posted on this one. mcminnville, oregon. wildfires burning across colorado this morning. that fire has killed two people and destroyed at least 360 homes. sadly the bodies were found inside the garage of a town in black forest in southwest colorado. firefighters say the car doors were open as if they were about to leave their home to try to escape the flames.

today evacuation orders have spread to the state's second largest city, colorado springs. 1,000 people in the city have already been ordered to evacuate. 2,000 others are on standby. two people in serious condition in miami after a packed outdoor deck collapsed at a miami area sports bar. investigators there say about 100 people were on that deck at shucker's bar and grill when the deck gave way. the collapse sending people into the shallow waters in biscayne bay. a total of 24 people had to be put into ambulances and taken to the hospital. the bar says the deck was so packed because fans were out there watching the miami heat play the san antonio spurs in game four of the nba finals. it's 6:41. coming up, another death this qi at a south bay work site.s new details ahead in a live report. plus we'll also tell you about an ordinary parking spot

welcome back everyone. it's 6:44. take a look at this. these are live pictures from minnville, oregon, northeast of salem, where a tornado hit. our chopper has been flying over the scene. luckily no one was injured. look how it literally ripped the roof off of this building here, just some of the damage. you see people in the upper right corner walking around, no doubt assessing how quickly the

the majority of that crowd made up of parents who say certain board members operate by using intimidation and micromanaging tactics which has ultimately created a toxic environment. these parents say it's no coincidence that since november more than a dozen administrators and teachers have left the district including five principals, a superintendent and two assistant superintendents. so last night they presented the board with a petition asking four members to resign including the board president, christine koltermann. michelle ryan, ina bendis and chris stampolis. >> he's hurt the public teachers in our district. that's not okay, and we're sick of it. >> reporter: stampolis acknowledges the fact that more than a dozen administrators have left. he says, quote, that's a great thing. at least one teacher doesn't have a problem with all the change. >> i've seen a lot of turmoil from people who don't like things being shaken up. maybe things should be shooken up. >> reporter: what's next? parents say they are not giving

started outside near the back of the house. neighbors say the graffiti said "stop snitching" and showed up on the front side of the home yesterday. no one was at home at the time of that fire. there are no injuries. the exact cause is still under investigation. this morning investigators looking into a freak accident killing a worker at the stevens creek quarry marking the second death at a south bay job site in only four days. out her car in front of michael's craft store when she hit the elderly woman. the woman was transported to the hospital for a hip injury but she's expected to be okay. los gatos posting the final version of a new gun ordinance for firearm dealers that requires all shops selling firearms within town limits to apply for a permit and attend an annual meeting to renew the permit. the town holding a public meeting on monday to talk about the ordinance, the recent opening of templar sports which sells firearms sparking this debate. the company's facebook page says the ordinance would possibly prevent it from selling guns in the future. the first stage of california's high speed rail project has the green light from the federal government to move forward. the federal surface transportation board voted this week to allow the first phase of the project to proceed without waiting for time-consuming approval process. phase one is a 65 mile stretch

gentleman crunch his nose against this gate, like a celebrity might be inside. actually it's the $82,000 parking spot where that porsche suv is. if you can swing it, it might actually pay off for you. it's near at&t park, the embarcadero, lots of restaurants. metered parking in the area still running about $7.00 an hour during events. the chronicle reports as home prices go up, so does the price of parking spots in a tight city like san francisco. it seems high, but it can certainly add up to $100,000, they're saying, to a condo's sales price or can even rent for about $450 a month. now, at the height of the real estate market, it actually sold for about $95,000 which is actually a screaming deal compared with a recent irs auction in boston which fetched about $560,000 for two parking spots. an auction started about $42,000
