returning on monday. >> that is what's happening "today in the bay." we're back with a live local news update. good morning. breaking overnight, panic as a >> the frantic rescues and what may have caused the terrifying accident. from bad to worse, the forest fire the most destructive in the state's history. blamed for two deaths and consuming more than 375 homes. we're on the front lines. al stops the rain preventing our maroon 5 concert from becoming monsoon 5. today is friday, june 14th,
7:01 am
2013. from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1-a is rockefeller plaza. good morning. i'm matt lauer. >> i'm savannah guthrie with natalie morales and al roker that conquered the weather today. >> by the time they take the stage it will be dry for the most part. >> what do you mean for the most part? >> a little drizzle but it's getting out of here. i'm just telling you -- there are umbrellas there. i'm not saying there's bright, blue skies. >> it will be a good concert no matter what. >> we're looking forward to it in our 8:30 half hour. we want to begin with a serious story.

the frightening deck collapse in miami as they were watching the nba finals on tv. >> divers spent the night searching the water making sure no one was trapped. mark is there for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, savannah. you can see the deck behind me. last night people were here cheering on the heat in the nba finals when suddenly a part of this deck and a lot of people fell into the water. >> all of a sudden we hear this crack happen. i thought a boat hit the deck. >> reporter: police say the accident occurred around 9:45 p.m. at shuckers bar and grill in miami. customers were watching the heat play the spurs in the nba finals when as many as 100 people fell into several feet of water when the deck of the sports bar collapsed. >> you hear crunch, crunch, and then, bam, piller coming down, people screaming and people yelling. >> reporter: eric williams heard
7:03 am
the collapse and rushed to help. >> i went into the water and my son was pulling people out of the war. the war was a little bit slimy. >> reporter: 24 people were taken to area hospitals for treatment, two of them in serious condition. >> as soon as our units arrived they were able to assess the scene and start rescuing people and bring them to the treatment area so we could triage them and treat them and transport them in as short a time as possible. >> from all the information we have everybody is accounted for. >> reporter: fortunately no one was killed in this incident. the question to be investigated now is what went wrong here? why did this occur? matt? mark potter in miami this morning. thank you very much. meanwhile, in colorado even more homes destroyed overnight by the massive and out of control wild fire still going on right now and officials say it's quickly becoming the most destructive in that state's history.
7:04 am
nbc's ma miguel is in colorado springs. good morning. >> reporter: the black forest fire, a historic fire claimed hundreds of homes and two lives. it's only 5% contained and shows no sign of slowing down. a rare view from the front lines of colorado's deadly and most destructive wild fire in state history. 379 homes destroyed in county and at least two people are dead. >> it appears as though the individuals were in the garage and the car doors were open as though they were loading or grabbing last-minute things and all indications are from the evidence on scene that they were planning to depart very quickly. >> reporter: with 13,000 homes still threatened today the governor declared a disaster. >> give me some water. >> reporter: the battle for containment is part military assault.

the national guard and air force backing up firefighters on the ground and from above. the air attack in fire fights like this one is critical but for this home, it's going to be too late. on thursday a steady stream of water drops, with the burn zone spanning 25 square miles, this morning nearly 40,000 people are evacuated, most left to wait and wonder. >> it looked like our neighborhood was already on fire, but we really don't know anything. >> reporter: a historic and deadly fire still on the move, still threatening homes and lives. firefighters say they have made progress, but they will need mother nature's help to turn the corner here. it's going to be a tough day on the firelines. back to you.
7:06 am
>> all right. miguel, thanks. of course that fire is only one of several burning across the state of colorado this morning. terry is the sheriff of el paso county colorado. we were talking about the deaths of those loading up to evacuate and there are reports that they were on the phone. >> i think it's a combination of people waiting too long and underestimating the speed of which a fire could move on them. they said they could see a glow to the west and here we are 40 minutes later and another caller could hear crackling in the back, the background noise and they claim they were leaving at that hoement. >> is it fair to say the investigation is now a homicide investigation? >> well, obviously with the two deaths, it's absolutely how we
7:07 am
will be pursuing it and it's how we are looking at it and treating every aspect of that investigation. >> i was looking at what you have in terms of resources. 750 people on the ground in round-the-clock shifts, and is this a situation where the more people you have the better chance you have to control it or are these people simply no match for mother nature? >> well, i will tell you, mother nature has really challenged us the last couple days. today is supposed to be another windy day, and having all those bodies will be an asset. it's two fronts, the containment, and then the growth of the actual fire and offering the structure protection and being able to move quickly to each resident because it's spotty and jumping around and we are talking about a fairly large area. >> i know your folks have your hands full today and we appreciate you taking time with us this morning. >> you are welcome. thank you for having me.
7:08 am
>> thank you very much. here is savannah. and now to the developments in syria. this morning the u.s. is preparing to step up military support of rebels after finding conclusive evidence that the syrian government has used chemical weapons against the opposition. chuck todd is nbc's chief white house correspondent. good morning to you. >> this comes after months of deliberations, growing pressure on the white house to do something, not just from republican hawks like john mccain, but also from some democrats like bill clinton. yesterday the white house announced steps to help turned tide. today the white house facing growing pressure after declaring the syrian president has used chemical weapons, including deadly gas against his own

people. for months president obama has said the use of chemical weapons would cross a red line and trigger a u.s. response. the u.s. will now provide lethal aid to those forces, and mccain says that may not be enough. >> i think the way the issue has been handled is disgraceful, and this because of our inaction is turn into a regional conflict. >> they could include additional arms and additional humanitarian aid or enforcement of a no-fly zone, but for now no talk of putting u.s. troops on the ground. why? the public is skeptical. just 15% of americans believe the u.s. should use military force. >> chuck, there is growing pressure to october.
7:10 am
there is not a lot of appetite in the country of deepening the involvement into this conflict. >> reporter: our last poll that we conducted we anticipated something like this. 1 in 4 americans support the idea of either having direct military involvement or arming the opposition. a large majority, over 70%, either want the u.s. to do nothing, stand aside, or only provide humanitarian aid, and it's one of those issues it's the exact same if you look at just look at democrats or republicans or independents, it's the across the board, it's a war-weary country and you see it when you ask questions about involvement in syria. >> let's bring richard engel into the conversation. chemical weapons have been used by the regime as a caravan of lies.
7:11 am
as we talk about deepening u.s. involvement, is this arming the rebels, as many of the obama administration critics say too little too late? >> reporter: we spoke to diplomatic sources and rebels themselves, and unless something changes quickly the rebels are going to lose this fight. the key change happened when hezbollah started to intervene in a major way on behalf of the syrian government. it's a big militia and organized. but it's not just hezbollah, and you have the iranian guard and iraqi shiite militias. so unless something happens, they are going to lose. >> thesitants of the
7:12 am
administration could have delayed this. >> reporter: is that a leg legitimate concern, and there could be squabbling on the ground between rebel groups, jealousies, but if you talk to the rebels, they say the best way to weaken the fringe groups is by supporting the mainstream groups, and the stronger you make them and the more stronger they seem and the more supporters they can bring to their cause and make the fringe groups appear more marginal than they are. >> thank you very much. natalie joins us now and has new developments tied to the man that exposed the government's phone surveillance program. good morning to you. >> britain today hung out the not welcome sign for edward snowden, the man that admits to being the nsa leaker. the british government told airlines around the world not to let snowden get on flights to the united kingdom. he is believed to be in hong kong and is yet to be charged with any crime. investigators are trying to
