good saturday morning to you. looking live at some of that squishy fog in senol what does it mean for your saturday plans? let's find out. i'm kris sanchez. is it coming? is it going? >> squishy fog, i love that. >> i have scientific. >> very scientific this morning. we are waking up to some fog. you get up against the coast, the fog is widespread like san francisco and santa cruz. temperatures in the 50s. north bay valleys, temperatures are the coolest. 49 in santa rosa. 46 in novato. 55 in san jose. we are expecting fog to stick around at the coast for the first half of the day from san francisco down to santa cruz.

temperatures in the 60s. near 70 in santa cruz. inland valleys, that's where it's the warmest. san jose at 79. santa rosa, 80 degrees. perhaps headed out to the oakland and mariners game this afternoon, temperatures will be comfortable, falling from the lower 70s back to the upper 60s. all of us here are rooting for the oakland a's and the san francisco giants who are in atlanta. it's father's day weekend. we'll have that full forecast coming up in a bit. >> big plans for that. thank you very much. we begin with developing story in the east bay where a suspect is dead and a brave worker is credited with saving the lives of two sheriffs deputies during an armed robbery in castro valley. the sheriff's department says the depositiuties were conductea traffic stop around 10:00 last night. during that stop, a restaurant employee ran out of a restaurant to tell deputies that the burger joint was being robbed.

the deputies rushed into the building and confronted the masked man, they say was armed with a revolver. at that point the suspect fired, but a worker reportedly intervened, grabbing the gunman's arm. one deputy was able to return fire killing that suspect. >> there's no question he helped out the deputies. his intent certainly on the robber's part was to do harm to our deputies and this employee definitely interceded. took some very heroic action. and then the deputies took their own heroic action when they fired and stopped the threat. >> that employee was taken to the hospital with a burn from the revolver, but is doing fine this morning. initial reports said that at least two people were inside the restaurant, and that they were shot but the sheriff's department says that was not the case. the business was closed at the time of the robbery. a south san francisco man is among four people behind bars this morning accused of running

a prostitution and human trafficking ring in northern california. agents arrested three of the suspects in the sacramento area thursday night. then the fourth, 49-year-old zilu was arrested in an apartment complex just across the street from south san francisco's b.a.r.t. station. the doj says many of the women were smuggled in from china and rotated between locations in the bay area and sacramento so they could not connect with each other. neighbors say they are shocked that sex trafficking could be happening in plain sight. one woman says the door of that apartment was always cracked open, but she never thought twice about it. >> i am completely shocked right now. i thought somebody just popped into the apartment because we're next to b.a.r.t. since the window is usually cracked open or the door is open, i thought somebody went in. >> i think people don't pay attention. they kind of have blinders on when it comes to things like

that. when it happens, it's like my gosh. >> the arrest came after a five-month investigation by the state department of justice. doj says more arrests could be on the way. a petaluma man is in jail after he showed up for a sexual encounter with an 11-year-old who was, in fact, an undercover santa clara sheriff's deposition. the 23-year-old was arrested wednesday evening near the san jose state campus where he allegedly arranged to meet that child. the man admitted to planning to sexually assault and physically abuse a minor. they say his violent intent was evident based on the devices he had with him when he was arrested. an undercover agent created an online profile posing as an 11-year-old child and established a relationship with the man, a ruse that led to his arrest. police in richmond are demanning that police remove a shipwrecked boat that allegedly belongs to a sex offender.

that boat's owner is 67-year-old donald olson, he was take noon custody for failing to reveal his whereabouts, which as a sex offender he has to do. police say they have to go through the legal process before they remove the boat which likely won't happen until the end of the month. family and friends of a missing san francisco man are expected to gather once again this morning to continue their search for him. 19-year-old sean seedie was last seen leaving the french american school on may 21st. the western end of golden gate park will be searched, not far from where his cell phone went dead. he suffered a traumatic brain injury after a fall last november, and a private investigator is urging his status be elevated from missing to a person who is physically or mentally disabled. vice president joe biden is waking up in the bay area this

morning. he is expected to be in palo alto sometime today. but last night he was in san francisco for a fund-raiser. mr. biden's visit comes one week after president obama's bay area visit and just like the president, protesters showed up in full force. cheryl herd was there and has the story. >> reporter: security was tight in san francisco's exclusive sea cliff neighborhood as police prepared for the vice president's arrival. >> i'm sure mr. biden has to be treated very carefully. >> reporter: about 50 people who oppose the keystone pipeline project were kept away. they wanted joe biden to hear their message about protecting the environment. the vice president's motorcade drove quickly past protesters heading straight to the private

good morning. we are looking live at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see the fog that will stick around the coastline for much of the day. if you want some heat, visit some friends inland. a follow-up on the condition of injured giants fan bryan stow. earlier this week, we told that you stow had to leave a rehab center because his insurance would no longer pay the bill. this morning we are hearing from the head of the bakersfield center where stow was staying. stow lost his ability to walk, talk and write after an attack outside dodgers stadium in 2011. dr. mark ashley said stow was regaining some of those skills at his facility, but he says most insurance companies will cut off coverage for intense therapy like his after 30 to 90 days and he doesn't think that's right. >> it's tremendously unethical in my estimation that we would knowingly withhold effective

treatment from people for money. you would never see a woman with breast cancer treated this way. you would never say to the woman with breast cancer let your husband take care of your treatment. >> stow is now staying with his parents at their home in santa cruz. his family says his condition is weakening without that therapy. this morning a paraolympian will begin a 2300 mile journey across the pacific starting in santa cruz heading to hawaii. angela madsen who is paralyzed from the waist down will make the journey on the spirit of orlando. she was supposed to hit the open ocean last saturday, but bad weather delayed the trip. the paraolympian has crossed oceans before, this is her first solo attempt. she says she should reach her destination in about three months. >> if i get good conditions, there's the possibility of 70 to 75, but i'm usually a week off. so we'll say 80 to 100. >> she was paralyzed after back surgery in 1993 while she was in

there was a 40 degree difference between inland and the beach. how do we dress. >> and morning to night here. right now it's 80 in the day, by night we're in the 60s. how do we dress? >> how do we do it? >> we have a new store in the bay area with three new locations, and both looks are from calipso. so what we started off with, first we have natalie. she has a great kashmir sweater on that you can use at night with the way the weather has been. under it she's wearing a great long maxi dress. maxis are so big for summer now, as are the bold prints. this combined both of those trends. it's also 95% silk with 5% spandex. gives a little bit of pull. you're comfortable if you're running around with the kids. i love this we also have bold jewelry on her. statement pieces are huge right now for summer. she has a great bag with a scarf wrapped around. again, you can use that --

bag. >> even the fingernails are white. i saw that in a magazine. >> everyone is doing the white toes, white nails. it could be a little intimidating. >> yeah. we always hear you can't wear white. >> this year there's so many designers doing it, they've come out with great prints, great fabrics. look for a little room. you don't have to wear all form fitting. you can play with it. and self tanner can be your best friend this season. besides that what both girls are wearing are these sandals. the shoes are a great way to add kick to your wardrobe. these are from mystique, available at citrus in the bay area. these are all gemstones, crystals, natural leathers. which parts of these trends can we wear if we have to go to work before we go to the beach? >> the all-white look is one you can wear for work or do a white

plenty of sunshine once we get to the inland valleys. at the coast temperatures will start to warm. we'll see some sun, however it won't be very warm. in san francisco today, only into the lower 60s. jacket weather. if you're planning on hitting the beaches, maybe doing surfing down at half moon bay, have those water suits ready. temperatures in the 60s there. the one location you'll have to get back into the bay and eventually into the inland locations, that's where we will see temperatures in the 70s and 80s. at the coast, foggy, temperatures only in the 60s. with a bit of this fog today, no airport delays in san francisco. 53 in san bruno. across the rest of the country, greens across the board from chicago to new york city, over towards boston. not expecting any delays this morning. if you're visiting your father across parts of the lower 48, you are good to go. back into the east bay, 54 in livermore. 58 in concord. south bay, 55 in san jose. look at this system spinning

across the pacific. this is an area of low pressure which is keeping the fog in place at the coast. you have that strong marine push up against the coast. the winds will keep the coastal locations cool. definitely a far cry from what we saw last weekend when many inland locations were back into the triple digits, even in san francisco. we got close to 80. this weekend, a completely different story. fog at the coast. inland valleys will remain warm with temperatures in the 80s, at least for today and tomorrow. you'll notice the fog, future cast gets put into place by 11:00. a bit of fog drifts away from the golden gate. half moon bay a bit of fog until this afternoon. by 5:00, that fog hangs on tightly from san francisco down to half moon bay. again, 64 in san francisco today. 77 in redwood city. 79 in san jose. inland valleys the warmest. tomorrow, back to 85. we do appear cooler monday and

budget except for one group in sonoma county which didn't want to see its favorite state park close. so they did something about it. >> reporter: to tell the story of saving the jack london state park, one needs to start on a horse. one that in the late 1980s carried chuck levine on his first visit to the park on his second date with his future wife. >> the trail up to the lake was a beautiful trail. i remember being amazed at the architecture. >> reporter: it was the beginning of two long-term relationships. chuck, eventually retiring from a high-flying career in the telecommunications industry, to a home right next to the park. >> we spent a tremendous amount of time in the park.

i'm in the park at least four or five days a week. when i'm in town it's probably seven days. >> reporter: he also became a member of the valley of the moon natural history association, a friends of the park, if you will. although, when news hit that jack london was one of 70 parks the state planned to shut for budget reasons, the park needed more than just a friend. >> there wasn't a lot of choice in the matter. we knew we had to save the park, and that was job one. >> reporter: so the association made an agreement with the state to take over park operations which is what they did last year. the park was not only saved, it is now thriving. attendance is up. revenue is up. as one visitor simply put it, the park's energy is up. >> we got 85% of our guests saying that their visit was excellent. i've never had a survey come out with numbers like that. and i'm ecstatic. >> reporter: that is in part because visitors say the park

looks better than it has in decades. thousands of volunteer hours are helping to chip away at years of deferred maintenance. miles of once closed trails are open once again. >> if you want to go further -- >> chuck says the model they have come up with is not a perfect fit for every park out there, still, for other groups looking to do something similar, there is, if not a blueprint to copy, a lesson to learn. >> getting together, a community can successfully accomplish an enormous amount. the people here are focused on running a successful park and allowing it to thrive. we can do that if we all pitch in. we all work together. we can make it work. >> that was garvin thomas reporting. still ahead on "today in the bay" -- speaking of the budget, the state managing to do something it hasn't done in nearly 30 years. the story next. good morning. looking live at foster city, a bit of fog to start the day. a bit of sunshine, some of our other cameras showing a nice day throughout the bay. thanks for joining us, i'm kris sanchez, along with meteorologist anthony slaughter. >> we are talking 60s and 70s at the coast, the inland valleys, back in the 80s. a widespread of temperatures today. 49 in santa rosa. 53 in san francisco. 62 in san mateo. you'll notice even a 20 degree spread across the bay area. across the bay area, this afternoon sunshine. the coast to santa cruz, not a whole lot of sunshine. there will be peeks of sun here and there.

most of the fog will hang on tightly at the coast. inland, 79 at san jose, 82 in livermo livermore. if you're taking dad out, it will be nice. inland is key today. >> thank you very much, and think. firefighters in colorado are making progress against a massive wildfire burning near colorado springs. two people died because of the forest fire which scorched nearly 30 square miles and destroyed some 500 homes since it started on tuesday. some people were allowed to check on their homes yesterday. but evacuations orders are still in line for tens of thousands of people. a surprise rain shower helped crews gain ground yesterday. the fire now is about 30% contained this morning and is the most destructive wildfire in colorado state history.

vice president joe biden is waking up in the bay area this morning and he is expected to visit palo alto today, but last night he was in san francisco for a fund-raiser. his motorcade drove quickly past dozens of protesters angry over the keystone pipeline project and headed straight to the home of don ross and doug hickey, the ceo of a major distributing company in the city. the price to get in between $500 to $10,000. people living in the city had mixed reactions about the visit. >> i'm sure mr. biden is -- has to be treated carefully, but it still is very difficult when you can't get through your own home. >> i don't find it to be annoying. i'm honored they show up. >> mr. biden's visit comes one week after president obama was in the bay area for fund-raising events for the democratic party as well. this morning the state budget is on its way to governor jerry brown's desk, he is expected to approve it lawmakers

in sacramento passed the budget yesterday, a day before today's deadline. the $96 billion budget will redistribute education funding to help needier school districts and expand public health care coverage and lay the ground work for years of spending increases for social services. it was passed with a party line vote. >> the process is not democratic. it's just simply done by the democrats, that's what we object to. >> most of the bills have been out in public for days. there are a few. the way that works, last-minute negotiation, they have only recently come in print. if they want to come back tomorrow, we're happy to do that. i want to live by that. >> now, this is the fest time a budget was passed before its deadline in nearly three decades, believe it or not. u.p.s. drivers hit the picket line in san jose this week over what they are calling an unfair contract. u.p.s. drivers say the company makes billions of dollars every

year, but yet wants employees to start paying into medical insurance benefits for less coverage. they say the company also wants retirees to pay more into benefits plans. they are encouraging employees to vote no in the current contract. >> there has to be better language to protect these guys. they just need to protect their employees. they're the force of this company. >> u.p.s. issued a statement saying it made a contract offer with wage increases for employees while protecting the company's competitive position. they add the new contract agreement has been endorsed by the international brotherhood of teamsters and local 287 that covers u.p.s. employees in the san jose area. new this morning, police in san francisco are keeping a close eye on a vacant lot near hayes valley after clashes between police and protesters last night. police say protesters threw objects at officers and we're told two people were arrested this is video from earlier this

and heading back to colombia. he is getting a lot of attention after accosting passengers in the buff last month. he is an acrobat from colombia, according to a berkeley circus group he used to perform with. immigration officials say he is not a u.s. citizen and his visa is expired, so he could be deported. san francisco's d.a. office is still considering charges for perez. the federal immigration authorities were alerted when he was arrested. he is now wearing a gps anklet. still ahead on "today in the bay," hundreds of lights out on the bay bridge, and now we know why. the fix in store for the bay bridge lights project.

but burn off elsewhere. nice, mild day. there is some concern this morning over news that the contractor for the new bay bridge will get a $20 million bonus if the bridge is completed on time. state lawmakers acknowledge bonuses are often included into big contracts that prompt completion but they say safety should be the primary concern, not on-time performance. lawmakers are sending caltrans a letter outlining their concerns. caltrans says it will decide around july 10th whether the new span will open on labor day weekend as planned. the lights project on the bay bridge, it was recently disz kov discovered hundreds of lights are malfunctioned and it's now known why. moisture is getting into the lights and burning them out. the company that manufacturers the lights has agreed to foot

the bill for some of them. >> it is taking into account the new level of constraints that are there because of these lights fwhg an off position. >> organizer ben davis says the group plans to fully redo the project in the fall, which may require redoing all 25,000 lights. that project will be on display for two years. the mayor of new york city is in the bay area this morning striking a big tech deal. we'll show you what it means for businesses on both coasts. and if you're doing any traveling across the bay area today, inland locations will be the warmest with lots of sunshine. waking up to fog this morning in fremont. we'll break down your full

see here that thin layer of fog that formed overnight in the inland valleys. that's not the case everywhere. at the coastline, the fog is thick and widespread. today that will be the place to sees most of the foggy conditions. if you're planning to get out on some of the local beaches and waters, we are talking about foggy conditions, especially at the coast with temperatures in the 60s. bay side and inland, that's where we see more sunshine. temperatures there back into the 70s and 80s. definitely micro climate in full effect. the time loline today shows tha fog in place. once we get towards noon, fog will be isolated towards the coastal locations. 70s bay side, inland locations by this afternoon, back into the lower 80s. it will be a nice day inland. the coast, the fog is widespread. you can see from the visibility satellites, all the way down to santa cruz looking at fog this morning. that will stick through midday.

go. spike it. touch it. oh! >> this was for the young athletes with down syndrome. because you're different doesn't mean you're not normal. your life can be enhanced by knowing someone like this. >> it was huge. >> everything you do here is fun. but i enjoyed the drills. the quarterback drills, make them feel like, you know, like an athlete he is. >> for them, this is a big deal. they get a chance to go from being a guy on the side lines to being the guy on the field. it's about them. >> super bowl 50 in a couple years, but that will be the only game that's bigger than this game on saturday, because it is a classic. these kids liv for this game. it's the most fun thing i do in my life.
