opportunities today, but justin rose had some pressure shots that he delivered and executeded down the stretch, which is the kind of stuff that u.s. open champions are made of. >> phil, those wedges on 13 and 15, 13 goes over the green, then 15 hits that big drive with the 2 wood off the tee. wedge to the green. makes bogey there. those two holes were really k l killer for him, then of course the two double bogeys on 3 and 5 and 36 putts, so even though he hit 15 greens out of 18 holes, phil had a million chances and just unfortunately on his birthday, it didn't seem like his birthday golfing wise, did it? and then rose, he was 4 over par on his first 13 holes on thursday. looked like he was out of the championship. he battles back. plays 3 under par golf after

that. wonderful after that. he was clutch. the two shots at 18. terrific tee shot at 17. with his golf swing, he could be unleashed. he could be tough to beat in the next five years. >> we want to show you how justin rose got it done today. he began the day two back of phil mickelson's lead and this got things rolling for birdie at the 6th. two bogeys the last three holes and this is the up and down stref at the golf course that rose was able to survive and then, this birdie putt at 7. >> look at the wiggles on that. >> didn't look like it was going to get in until the last second. rose goes out in 1 under 35. pars 10. bogeys 11 and then hits this second shot at the par 4 12th. >> it's a beautiful shot. for a tap-in birdie.

donald having his problems, he wait to wait for that second shot. that was a lot of time to sit around and think about it. you know ben hogan came to mind and all the players who were so aware of the history here at merion. you saw justin rose checking out some of the pictures on the walls inside the clubhouse as he comes out with the president of the usga, about to be recognized as a part of that merion special class of champions here. 18th usga championship played here. there's mike davis, the executive director of the usga, set up the golf course. there's the usga brought this championship back to this quaint little gem to this neighborhood in ardmore, p.a. >> it's just what rose needed, a major championship, because he's got the game. he is so happen p pi. cannot get much happier than that.

national championship. >> justin, congratulations. you are very emotional after holing out at 18 and signing your scorecard with your wife alongside you to the extent that your comfortable, what were those emotions about? >> today's father's day and before i get too emotional, happy father's day to all of you guys out there and you know -- i think you know, a lot of us come from great men and we have that responsibility to our children to show them what a great man can be and that was my goal today, just to sort of carry myself in a way that i could be proud when i came off the golf course and for it all just to work out for me on such an emotional day. i just couldn't help but look up to the heavens and think that my

old dad, ken, had something to do with it. >> you burst on the scene as just a 17-year-old at the british in 1998. great things were forecast for you and you put together an excellent career. but this was your 37th major start before the breakthrough. had you begun to wonder if it would ever happen? >> there's no doubt. i mean, i hadn't really given myself many great chances and took a will the of sort of encouragement from adam scott, great friend of mine. i saw how he's gone about playing major championships. he sent me a fantastic text message after the masters and he said, your time's coming soon and he's a wise man. >> much has been made about the glorious history of merion. your tee shot at 18. as you closed in on the championship. landed virtually on top of the hogan plaque. the iconic 1 iron shot. there's no 1 iron in anybody's

bag anymore. what did you hit and did you notice how close you were to the plaque? >> i did. when i came over the hill and saw my ball lying in the middle of the fairway and just what a beautiful setting this is is, i thought, this is my moment. i've seen that ben hogan photograph a million times and suddenly, it was me hitting from the middle of the fairway. so, i just triy eied not to get ahead of myself. i hit a beautiful 4 iron into the green and just so glad it all worked out. >> this moment is yours. you've expressed yourself very well. anything else you'd like to say? >> yeah, absolutely. philadelphia has been my town. >> you know how to work a crowd, don't you? >> i have such good support here all week and there are a lot of people in the crowd who remembered me from 2010 at&t that i won here and i felt like i had a lot of good will in the

>> all right, thank you, phil. after you made that second shot at the tenth and had a one-shot lead, did you feel like this one was yours? >> i felt like there were eight more holes. i had come so close to getting the ball to go in the hole and i couldn't get one to go in starting on the 1st or 2nd hole, that to finally get one in the hole just felt good and i thought maybe things were going to turn. i felt like i hit good putt after good putt, but just couldn't get to fall. i don't know what i would do differently other than read it differently, but when it was almost there a number of times, i couldn't get it to go in. so on that shot on 10. it was a nice little momentum boost. >> you told us you were going to stay patient. did you stay within your game plan? >> i trieded to. it's never easy, final round of the u.s. open and you've got guys in front of you dictating what you have to do and when i made that eagle on 10, it made,

allowed me to relax because it moved me back to even par, which is a score you've got to figure is going to be around where the winning score is. i felt like i was fairly patient, i hit two shots, misclubbed on 13. i drew a pitching wedge, i should have drawn a gap wedge because it was too much club and i hit a poor gap wedge on 15. i kind of quit on it. if i hit it hard, ying i can hit it past the hole. those two wedge shots were the poor swings coming down the stretch. >> this is your sixth runner up finish at the u.s. open. what do you take away from this one? >> heartbreak. this is tough to swallow after coming so close. this was my best chance of all of them because i was playing well. i had a golf course i really liked that i could play aggressive on a number of holes

and felt like this was as good an opportunity you could ask for. it hurts. >> thanks for your time, phil. >> thanks. >> you can see the emotion in phil's eyes. really candid in answering steve's questions there and really frank about the mistakes he made coming down the stretch with some of the club selections. >> 13 was a huge misclub. i mean, he was riding it with a draw wind and wasn't even close. way over the green. sort of a poor flop shot. on 15, hits a big 2 wood and really looking at a birdie, then hits that shot poorly, too. the wedges are killing him. >> this was the shot he talked about and the shot that gave him the one-shot lead with eight holes to play from 76 yards. eagle at the 10th. that was the at the 64 degreer he put in the bag just for

merion and was so pumped up. that pitching wedge here, he's turning it down. punch draw, trap draw and not even close. it just way past the green. >> led to a bogey and phil fell to plus 1 and this was the par attempt at 14. >> hits a beauty there. reads it perfectly. one of the few putts he made all day. >> that kind of propelled him through the first of those five tough finishing holes and here's mickelson looking at the wicker basket and then coming up long. >> that was a shot that he can hit most of the time. four out of five time, he can hit it thin. >> that led to a bogey at 15. so now, two bogeys in three holes. he's fallen to plus 2 and this was the birdie attempt at 16 that really could have helped matters. >> he hits it in the left rough. comes up with a great lie, great second and that putt, he should have made that putt.

>> so, he parred 16 and this was the tee shot at 17 and watch this shot here. it is looking really good right now. really good. it's picking up to the crest of the hill. almost over and goes the other way. misses that by two feet. >> at this point of the championship, he was in need of a birdie at one of the last. ended up two-putting from there, so needs a birdie at the 18th hole. a hole where there had been only 11 all week. hit a poor drive. second to this point. needed to hole this one out to tie justin rose at plus 1. another one escapes phil mickelson here at merion, justin rose, the winner. and you know, you heard mickelson say this was my best chance. heartbreak continues for him. exaltation there for justin rose, winner at the u.s. open. he goes to number three in the

world and gives england its first major champion in 17 years. we talked about nick faldo winning the 1996 masters, so the merion mystique continues because once again, the u.s. open champion doesn't lead any of the first three rounds and comes from behind the win in the end. >> it is a heartbreaker. that's what he said. going to have a tough time because he loves this place. loved his game coming into this round. ten players within four shots of the lead starting the day, but phil still thought he had it. double bogeys number 3 and 5 and then with the other mistakes coming in and poor wedge play, except for the one he holed out, that was the difference. 36 putts for day. he still only loses by two. he could have won by four or five shots if he had a good round. >> he ties for second with jason

day and justin rose becomes a part of the major championship club and the u.s. open fraternity and this is a look at what the u.s. open champion receives. exception in the next ten u.s. opens. exempt status on the pga tour. he's obviously into all these championships, but you also get the jack nicklaus medal, awarded just for the second time. but one final thought on this championship, not necessarily about the competition and mickelson finishing second, but what about merion as this championship came back here? boy, did this place hold up and then some. >> nobody even matched par. just fantastic. all about really the great design and the tough, tough rough. these young guys don't know maybe how to play the tough rough. >> merion doesn't disappoint. never underestimate this
