"today in the bay's" arturo santiago is live at the scene with what police think splay contributed to that scene. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. pearl here is closed in both directions. take a look behind me. the accident investigation team has started its work already. this happened just after 2:00 this morning. there were two people in the car, a driver and passenger. the passenger has been pronounced dead here at the scene. according to san jose police, the driver was trying to navigate a curve on pearl, but somehow lost control and crashed

at the intersection of hillsdale. the car hit and damaged five parked cars before coming to a rest on the side of the street there. just from the kind of damage that was cause police believe the car was simply going too fast. >> it's speculation, but it's pretty obvious he was coming at a high rate of speed. he hit five -- at least one parked car which hit another parked car which hit three more parked cars, we have five cars damaged due to this single-car accident. >> the 40-year-old victim was the passenger in the car. the driver is an 18-year-old male, taken to the hospital with minor injuries. police did find a number of beer cans in the car. it's not known if they were open or closed. investigators do believe that alcohol may have been a factor. again, the road is expected to be closed for at least the next few hours here while they conduct their investigation into few hours here while they we're live in san jose, i'm arturo santiago.

"today in the bay." we want to tell you about a pair of bills aimed at making california limousines safer. a senate committee considering a bill by san leandro state senator ellen corbett that would require two doors and two emergency window exits in the passenger section of all limousines. this would have to happen by 2015. tomorrow a separate bill being introduced by san mateo state senator jerry hill would require all limos to carry fire extinguishe extinguishers, both in response to two limousine fires. ten women narrowly escaping a fire in the limousine they were riding in. last month on the san mateo bridge five women tragically died during a major limousine fi fire. decades of the bodies of four women were found strag ld and dumped alongside rural roads. two of the women found right

"today in the bay's" marla tellez joins us. the suspected killer in this case is going to be representing himself. >> yes, 79-year-old joseph naso is representing himself. you can see he's not sitting by himself. he has the guidance of a legal adviser. for all intents and purposes he is his own attorney. he decided to plead not guilty to killing four women between 1977 and 1994. naso was a self-employed modeling photograph who ultimately settled down in reno. prosecutors have painted him as a sexual deviant who drugged and photographed his unconscious so-called models, then strangled them and dumped their naked bodies roadside in rural areas. one woman was found in fairfax which is in marin county. another woman was discovered on the outskirts of contra costa county. the pros cute kugs says it has a

strong case against naso as investigators say they found his dna on at least one victim. they also found what prosecutors call a rape journal inside his home in reno. laura mentioned these murders are known as the double initial killings. that's because all the women in this case had letters with ill lit ration, the case is being tried in marin county in san rafael. opening statements in less than three hours. this is a trial we will watch. coming up in my next report, i'll explain why authorities nationwide will be watching this case as well. jon? >> marla, thank you. the los gatos town council set to hold a public hearing addressing plans to change how the town deals with gun dealers. the new ordinance would require all gun dealers to get a permit from that time before selling guns. this one is drafted after public outrage over templar sports.

the store sells guns in los gatos. the owner says he followed proper permitting procedure. many community members are upset there was no public meeting before templar opened up. tonight's meeting starts at 7:00 at town council chambers. president obama is in northern ireland ahead of the g8 summit. air force one arrived in belfast carrying the president, first lady and their two daughters. after landing the president delivered a speech urging ireland's youth to keep the peace between catholics and protestants. he ekes expected to discuss the on going crisis in syria with vladimir putin. the united kingdom dealing with its very own hacking scandal as it hosts this week's g8 summit. a british newspaper reporting britain's eavesdropping agency

afternoon. 30 to 40 miles per hour from time to time. we're expecting the strongest gusts, the deep oranges, we'll see pretty stronóñi wind even san jose which is not one of the wind-prone areas across the bay area. not strong enough to where you have to tie down loose objects but strong enough when we hit 79 degrees at 4:00 p.m., open the windows in your home. we have good air quality. you can get that air moving around and you don't have to use your ac. changes headed our way as we get into the all-important upcoming weekend. lit start to feel like summertime. this is the last monday of spring. we'll start to get hot around here. we'll watch for the temperature changes. watching for the track to change right now, westbound interstate 80 underneath university avenue. coming off the merge, the folks off the san rafael-richmond bridge. the map will show very slow through that area, speeds down to 20 miles per hour at their

worst and toward the berkeley curve we should see the metering lights turned on. the metering lights are on and we have reports of a crash or car fire or maybe both, southbound 880 around the marina. i will track that and bring you the changes as they show up. here is southbound 880 around gish, reports of a stalled car in your second lane that could affect traffic approaching the interchange. a little slowing shows up. the rest of the freeways through the south bay are looking smooth right now. we have that closure, pearl at hillsdale. i'll outline that as well. that's where arturo is live. i'll show that in more detail in the next report. westbound 84 through livermore and dublin and perez zant ton, the slowing because of the building tri-valley traffic as well. the peninsula, a smooth flow from palo alto northbound away from us, past willow towards san mateo. no delays. southbound we'll see as the sun

women between the 1970s and 1990s. the trial is expected to last until mid november. president obama in northern ireland today for that g8 summit. this morning he was addressing a group of about 2,000 students and later is expected to meet with russia's president vladimir putin to talk about syria and arms control. a huge divide growing in the silicon valley between google and the rest of the tech community. >> apparently google insiders very upset with apple and facebook. scott mcgrew, this is turning into a real shouting match. >> yeah, it is. all tech companies have been embarrassed by these revelations they've been forced to give the federal government secrets about you, who you text or e-mail or instant message. the fight this morning, jon, is over how to measure it. apple says it received about 5,000 government requests for user data in the last six months. last month facebook said it received between 9,000 and 10,000 government requests in a

different six-month period. facebook and apple are not breaking out nsa spying demands, not being specific about the kind of fisa court issues that have made so much news. apple and facebook's numbers include everything, for instance, police looking for a stolen iphone or cyber bullying, the non-controversial stuff. that's hugely important to google. civil libertarians say they've been working tremendously hard to secure the right to tell you about the spying itself, to give you exact numbers about how and when the government>ok monitors your e-mail or searches and that the facebook and apple numbers are clouding that effort this morning. news.com reports a spanish television crew caught up with steve waz knee yack at an airport to ask him about nsa spying. waz knee yack said, quote, that's not my america. he said he was concerned constitutional rights had been

the bad news t leaky pipes at o.co couldn't handle it all. the players saying raw sewage forced both the a's and the mariners to head for higher ground, that being the raiders' second floor locker rooms. the sewage backup as you can imagine smelled pretty bad. it extended to the umpire's room, bathrooms and manager's offices at the clubhouse level. apparently this isn't the first time they've dealt with something like this. the angels filed a complaint about unsanitary conditions a few years ago at o.co. the coliseum was built in 1966. the a's lease expires after this season. they were asked about the need for a new stadium and they said, it's clear, right. major league baseball hasn't given the go-ahead because of the giants' territorial rights. here are some of the player tweets, from josh reddick, on a sewage coming up

got to get around this morning. thickest fog mostly concentrated at the immediate coast, hugging the san francisco tip of the peninsula. let's talk about temperatures and winds because they will play a factor today, starting with your wind speed, san francisco has a sustained speed of 19 miles per hour. that's strong enough to knock you around if you have a high profile vehicle. as we head through the day, winds will continue out of the west. temperatures are going to be perfect for outdoor plans. hiking, biking, anything you want to do outdoors today looking good. 53 to start? san francisco. 55 in concord and 55 right here in beautiful san jose. so here is our area of low pressure. you can actually see a little moisture associated with it moving onshore in the pacific northwest. for us, we're looking good. it will usher in low clouds each and every day. we'll carry the cool ocean air inland all the way through the delta. they'll be talking about the delta breeze in sacramento the next couple days. things change getting into the

end of the week. a big strong ridge of high pressure heading our way. we have warmer days ahead. enjoy the 70s as long as they last. 75 degrees today in san jose. tuesday into wednesday, holding on to that unseasonably cool air, just beautiful around here for your outdoor activities. great weather to get the kids outdoors, then gets a little too hot as we head through thursday and friday. great days, though, to hit the beach especially on saturday, 89 degrees. comfortable conditions, not too hot. stim starting to feel more like summer and saturday will be the first full day of summer. let's check that drive, good morning, mike. >> good morning. things are starting to kick in as far as the volume of traffic building a little bit. the south bay hasn't shown a lot of disturbance. we see blips around the areas. speeds coming down about 55 or 60. that's the worst of it. the stall earlier was southbound 880 around gish. that has just cleared.

northbound, that's a pretty typical commute direction, might be added distraction by the activity. we'll track that. we have early slowing northbound 880 approaching 101. arturo santiago continues to report from this deadly overnight crash hillsdale at pearl. this is capital expressway. a number of dealerships along capital expressway. i think there's still a kia dealership there at hillsdale. that's the issue. let me show you the live camera. we've turned the camera toward the investigation which continues there. you see the number of cars mangled in the area. a lot of measurements going on and a lot of crews there. that's why they have to keep that intersection closed all morning. hillsdale at pearl, that's just north of capital expressway and just west of highway 87. the on and off-ramps sound like they're open still. we'll show you more slowing on north 87. you see it just popped up in the sensors. that may be as a result of people hearing ab a commotion in the area. they're trying to figure out a

way to get off the area. it sounds like capital again is open for the area. a smooth drive up the pen nins larks 101 no problem. san mateo and the dumbarton bridge westbound are just fine. there is the car fire reported south 880 toward marina boulevard. sounds like everything is off of the roadway..et5"bát slowing, d past the scene. this is already an area of congestion off the castro valley y. also moving smoothly but slowly down the berkeley area we see a slowing for west interstate 880. look at all these folks cramming into the same amount of lanes we have overnight as well, this is the reason for the slowdown past the race track and also coming off the north bay into san francisco, the golden gate bridge you'll find slowing as well because of limited visibility. i have seen over the last few minutes the fog drift in and out. there are changing conditionings as the sun comes up. prepare for that as you approach north of the city.

first things he did was give a ireland and peace. he talked about the old hope campaign slogan, fwhu time putvñ new twist on it saying hope is contagious. from there he's going to be going to the g8 summit with world leaders like britain and france that he hopes to convince to do something about syria. the u.s. has now decided to arm the rebels. he wants the allies to do the same and wants russia essentially to back off. he'll be sitting down with russia's president to talk about that. the economy and trade are expected to be big. there's a trade agreement between europe and the u.s. that's been hung up over some issues that france has with the entertainment industry. they'll talk about that. finally, you mentioned it. counterterrorism, fighting the war on terror and these nsa leaks. now not only on our side of the atlantic but on the other side as well as this meeting gets under way, great britain accused of snooping on the delegates of

today. west early flow will carry the cool ocean air all the way inland. a good looking day shaping up "today in the bay." here is your hour-by-hour forecast, about 75 degrees at noon inland up to 79 degrees at the heat of the day. not too bad by june standards in the bay area. 72 bay side and 68 at the coast. tomorrow morning expecting thick low clouds and then we have a warmup towards the end of the week. i'll detail that for you in your city, time it all out in your seven-day forecast. let's check your drive with mike. >> good morning. as the sun comes up, we have a prettier shot for south 880 coming through fremont. the shot as far as the view from the chp report, not so great for that same area. southbound 880 approaching fremont boulevard, there's reports of a crashthere. it sounds like things are getting pushed off to the shoulder. until they're completely clear, we may have slowing that shows up in the next few.

farther north, still southbound 880. right around whipple, reports of a stalled vehicle as well. that's affecting lanes. there's a bumper in your second lane as well. be very careful there's undoubtedly going to be a traffic break as you head south out of hayward and toward union city on 880 southbound, your commute direction which had already started to build. a third issue for southbound 880 at marina boulevard. the earlier car fire had activity toward the off-ramp. may may have shut down the off-ramp as they try to clear the scene. if marina boulevard is your off-ramp, be prepared for delays at the scene. you might have to loop back and come back northbound. it sounds like the activity and trucks are now on scene taking care of business. more slowing coming towards the bay bridge. this is westbound 80, congestion through berkeley. no crashes through the area. we just have a big burst of traffic coming through the area out of richmond and heading

welcome back. good monday morning. tensions are high in istanbul after a series of weekend clashes between police and protesters. turkish police continue to guard the square this morning. earlier riot police repelled thousands of protesters who tried to return to a park that actually borders that square. over the weekend police kicked those protesters out of the park ending an 18-day peaceful protest. it sparked unrest in a number of turkish cities leading the a series of demonstrations. protesters accuse the prime minister of becoming increasingly authoritarian. firefighters worked hard trying to get an upper hand of a wildfire burning east of mariposa. the carsten fire has burned about 1,000 acres. the last report, there is zero containment on this one. a lot of work ahead. there are evacuation orders in

effect. the good news is no reports of injuries and so far no word on buildings being destroid stroid. in the meantime, crews in colorado have the largest wildfire in state history 65% contained. crews hope to have the 22-square-mile black forest fire under control by thursday. it has already destroyed nearly 500 holes. fire officials say some evacuees outside the burn area have been allowed to go back home. >> still a lot of work to go with 65% containment. that's a big improvement. good news. coming up, update on breaking news in the south bay where we're live with a look at the deadly overnight crash that ripped the roof right off a car. the markets are lower this morning as everyone worries easy money is over. the weather be easy for us with the micro climates in full effect this morning.

i'm meteorologist christina loren. thick fog in san francisco, complete sunshine in san jose. a good day shaping up and then we'll crank the heat. as we get a look at san jose, we see the slowdown northbound 101. worse still, i've got three issues for the nimitz freeway if you're using 880, you'll want to come back because i'm affecting the entire east bay or at least the traffic is. do you want to get away? a lot of people did from the carnival triumph but it is making hopefully a triumphant return in galveston after its first voir yaj back ow at sea since a fire in the engine room earlier this year. we'll see how she's running. a lot more news ahead as well. it's 6:41 right now. crystal geyser is always

happening right now, the fbi joining sheriff deputies in michigan to search for the remains of late teamsters boss jimmy hoffa. these are live pictures from the scene. the investigation is happening at a vacant field about 45 miles of detroit. today's dig is coming after a tip by a convicted mobster that hoffa's body was buried in a shallow grave in that field, that field about 20 miles north of a restaurant where hoffa was last seen in july of 1975. we have an update to breaking news. we just got off the phone with san jose police. they are telling us, yes, they have arrested the teenage driver in that deadly crash in san jose that we've been covering all morning long. inouye. >> in spots the drive is lighter, in spots it's heavier. here is the eastshore freeway, one of your usual suspects. haven't seen it quite this bad for quite some time. this is west 80 out of san pablo through richmond and toward university avenue. the bay bridge metering lights are on and the backup goes back toward the foot of the maze. we have a number of issues for 880, the nimitz in the southbound direction south towards san leandro. we have an earlier car fire reported around marina boulevard. the off-ramp itself might be affected. there's at least the distraction, if not the closure of the off-ramp for a short amount of time. more slowing through union city. it was an earlier issue with a number in the roadway. slow from the san mateo bridge down toward fremont. in fremont an earlier crash at fremont boulevard has cleared. we have slowing heading into the area and the mission cutover because of the build of traffic.

over here, southbound 880 heading toward whipple. that's the concern and more build towards the san mateo bridge. other side of the peninsula, palo alto, we have the flow of traffic moving nicely in the northbound direction. the southbound side, we see periods this direction heading towards university slows a bit. because of the sun in the eyes, that's been a big issue here as well as 280. watch southbound along the peninsula. the golden gate bridge, at least that view is much better. the south tower and north tower getting a peek of it. the low clouds are burning off. it's slow on the richmond san rafael bridge all the way down in san francisco. you have company guys. back to you. 6:50. new details for your on morgan hills' first homicide of the year. police are identifying the suspect under arrest as 60-year-old michael shepherd of morgan hill. officers say shepherd lives in the mobile home park on monterey road near where the body of a 40-year-old woman was found

saturday. investigators are looking into weather she was sexually assaulted before she was killed. shepherd is expected to make his first court appearance on wednesday. this morning pacifica police release ag sketch of a man they say tried to kidnap a 10-year-old girl. police say the man approach that girl near the pacifica pier telling her to come with him. when that girl refused, the man on your screen right tried to fois physically force her. she did fight back punching him and she was able to run away. it's been a long time coming the day for joseph naso, the . n opening statements are expected in marin county. marla tellez joins us with a preview. >> reporter: good morning. one of the most interesting elements of this murder trial is the fact that at 79 years old, joseph naso is taking on the task of defending himself. yes, he is his own attorney. we will hear his opening statement when court gets under way in san rafael at 9:00 this

morning. joseph naso is accused of killing four women between 1977 and 1994. two of the women were found dead in the bay area, one in marin county, the other in contra costa county. naso was a self-employed modeling photographer. prosecutors say he used that profession to take advantage of his victims. he said he drugged and photographed the women while they were unconscious, then strag ld them and dumped their naked bodies in the middle of know where. he says his so-called models were willing participants. investigators say his dna was found on at least one victim t. prosecution feels it has a strong case here. despite this naso is pleading not guilty. we'll follow this trial closely. you know what? so are authorities nationwide because they're looking at naso as a suspect in more cold cases. so this trial could lead to more legal problems for naso down the road. regardless, it's going to be a long journey for both sides as the whole thing, the whole trial is expected to last at least
