declassify without further compromising the program. >> reporter: defiant in his online chat snowden promised more leaks to come. intelligence officials are searching through their computers to learn how much he already accessed with some estimating that the tally is up to 1 million secret documents. andrea mitchell, thank you. mike rogers, a republican from michigan is chairman of the house committee, good morning to you. >> good morning, thank you for having me. >> you're going to have an open hearing this morning where general alexander will come and testify. do you expect him to come armed with specific examples of how terrorist plots have been thwarted? >> yes, we know there's dozens and we've asked to start declassifying these. he will talk more about declassified terrorist attacks that involved these two programs. the reason it's taking time is pain sakingly they need to make sure that no source, no method

is disclosed. we don't want to make this thing more damaging than it has already become to try to catch terrorists trying to stop terror in the united states. >> is somebody asking the american people to trust that the government can properly handle this information, not misuse it and let it be improperly accessed. how is it that a low level employee like edward snowden had access to this information and was able to do such damage? >> well, first of all he lied about his salary and lied about his capabilities and lied about his position but what he did have the capability to do as a system's administrator is see anything everything by. think of a traffic cop at the busiest new york city intersection. sees lots of traffic going by. every once in awhile he was able to look in and see it and grab ahold of it and that's exactly what he did. if it's 1,000 piece puzzle he may have took three pieces of it and decided on his own that this was bad for the country and had

no idea about the level of oversight, the number of times people have to check and recheck the work on these particular programs and he believed wrongly, of course, according to his internet chat that nsa can listen to american's phone calls or read americans e-mails. they cannot. so the damage caused by this is getting american's worked up by it, number one, which they should be if those things were true, but they're not. but also disclosing information that he has no idea about the depth and danger that he disrupts our ability to find terrorists trying to plot attacks in the united states. >> he says he has more secrets to reveal. are you concerned that he has information of that caliber and significance? >> any time you let the enemy know exactly how you do something or exactly how you get information about their movements overseas or their

plotting in the united states it becomes much more difficult. so yes, anything he talks about is dangerous and some motion that he thinks he's a whistle blower, he is well beyond that. he made plans and preparations for months to go to china. that's a little bit concerning to us. we don't understand why he would do that if he wanted to go seek asylum in iceland. none of his story makes sense and we're a little nervous that some of the things he was trying to do exceeded his capability so we're curious how did he get that capability? was somebody helping him try to download this and it would be concerning if he decided to disclose things of which he would have no understanding how they work, how they're overseen or how it's protected. mike rogers, thank you for your time, sir. >> thanks for having me. >> thank you. let's get more on today's final meetings of the g-8 summit in ireland. much of the focus today on the civil war in syria.

chuck todd is traveling with the president. chuck, good morning to you. good morning, matt. new polls at home show the american public does not side with president obama's decision to arm the syrian rebels. syria has been the main focus at the g-8 with western allies trying to convince russia it's in their best interest to stop backing bashar al assad. simply dialing back the rhetoric was seen as a sign of progress. >> smiles across the aisle this morning in the family photo. as the president concludes a g-8 dominated by syria he used a tape before he left to clarify his position. >> we're not taking sides in a religious war. >> reporter: he pushed back at the criticism that he took too long to help the opposition to bashar al assad militarily.

>> this argument that we should have gone in earlier or heavier in some fashion and the tragedy and chaos in syria wouldn't be taking place, i think is wrong. >> reporter: in the meeting with vladimir putin both men look like they get along. >> the president wants to relax me with his statement. >> the friendly banter, hardly the hardening of cold war tension some anticipated. the main objection was to say they weren't trying to overthrow the entire syrian government. ju just bashar himself. >> we share the same idea on chemical weapons. >> reporter: late last night the russian government reiterated itself stance, no preconditions and that includes the idea of bashar al assad's departure.

he'll head to the brandonburg gate where he'll make a speech that marks the 50th anniversary of the famous jfk speech. chuck, thank you very much. >> natalie is here with a big announcement today about women serving in the u.s. military. >> good morning. the pentagon will announce how it plans to open up roles for women in combat. so mick how is is this going to change the role for women in the military. >> natalie, for women in the military, this is major. we're not going to see women assigned to the front lines as trigger pullers any time soon but this is a giant first step toward lifting the ban on women in combat. today all the services will unveil their plans to open thousands of combat related jobs for women over the years. that cold include training for navy s.e.a.l.s or army rangers

but that is a long shot. there will be no special treatment. physical standards will not be lowered for women. this dramatic shift in policy is a recognition in over the past four years in wars in iraq and afghanistan women have been zraun into live fire. 150 u.s. servicewomen have been killed in combat in the two wars. thank you. a major milestone this morning in the almost 12 year war in afghanistan. today afghan armed forces took the lead for security in that country. taking the hand from nato and the u.s. the president called it a historic moment. as of today, nato's role becomes one of support. >> we will continue to help afghan troops in operations if needed, but we will no longer plan, execute or lead these operations. by the end of 201 nato

secretary general says nato's combat mission there will be done. >> a passenger tackled by fellow passengers and restrained was hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation. he started screaming about the cia and national security and claimed that everyone on the plane was being poisoned. the flight landed safely in newark where the man was escorted by fbi agents. violent clashes in brazil where they demonstrated against high taxes and poor transportation. 30 were hurt in confrontations in rio. >> fewer adult americans are smoking. the cdc study finds about 18% of adults described themselves as smokers last year. that's down from 19% the year before. officials are not sure what is behind the drop. the report did not include teen smokers. >> a new survey of travellers
