but there are a lot of things that you can do. you can just start blogging a little more. you can put more links in your twitter account, things like that that can start to push any naughty photos a little further down. >> same thing with wikipedia. which i understand if you go on wikipedia, anybody can say anything they want. anyone can edit. >> you have to constantly monitor that. which is really important. the world we live in today, we're all a brand and at work you are a brand. your reputation is your brand. what does your reputation say about you is a really important question and then in the end when it comes to looking for a job or getting job offers, your reputation can make a big difference between getting the big job offer or not getting it at all. >> sounds like you have to be careful at a party. sometimes you get lathered up in all the fun. you look at a picture and say, my god, i can't believe i was there. then all of a sudden it is everywhere. you have to be careful before. >> that's important. your reputation isn't just what you post, it is what your friends post about you, too. >> how many times have you told

♪ it's that time when sara breaks out of the city. this week we told her to get lost! which she did. she is actually home sick today. >> we hope you are feeling better, sara. but when she was well she went out in the wilderness to learn you how to survive in the great outdoors. it can happen to anybody. whether your car gets stuck on the side of the road or you find yourself off the trail in a family hike. >> sara enrolled in the mountain scout survival school in upstate new york so we could all learn a few lessons. >> reporter: on the discovery channel show "man versus wild," adventurers put their survival skills to the test. that wasn't me just yet. i needed to start with the basics. i headed into the woods to meet survival guru shane hobo and learn the rules about roughing it. >> what are you going to teach me today? >> there are four basic steps. shelter, water, fire, food. so, we're going to start with shelter. >> i was thinking food but -- actually, now that it's raining, maybe we should start with shelter.

tax filings, loan apps, social security cards, take the pictures of things and then leave your house. you never know they've been there. and then you're a victim of identity theft. you'd probably notice in a couple of months. you have to get defaulted on those accounts. >> to unring that bell, how long can that take? >> several months to several years. >> how do you get your credit rating during that time? >> it's terrible. that's the problem, it is destroyed. if you're trying to do anything -- buy a new house, refinance -- good luck. >> so pervasive too. this happens all the time. >> and it's so creepy. >> talk about vacation rentals. you go online, craigslist somewhere and you see, i might like to rent that home. how can that be a trap? >> sure. these criminals will post ads and say we're renting this house vacation home, maybe a san diego beach house and you want to rent it for a week.

the reality is they don't own the home or have anything to do with it. they just posted it online. in reality you aren't getting anything. they'll have you make a down payment or steal your information. >> your information. say we need to do a credit check on you before you can rent the house. they get your name and your social security number. >> how can you tell if they're legitimate. >> that one is hard. do research on the phone number that's listed in the ad. type that into google. i know don't like google. >> it's not they don't like it. but the reverse tone thing is good. >> yes. it is really important. >> if they have a no identification i.d. they're blocking it -- >> yeah. sometimes they won't give a phone number. an e-mail address only. that's a big sign. don't pay with cash. never just wire money to something like this. >> the exact opposite of everything my father taught me! >> sometimes people go on vacation, they like to post photos, we're enjoying the bahamas, having fun at the cape -- >> wait until you get home. >> yes! you're basically saying please rob my house.

>> they don't know if somebody's staying at your house while you're gone or you have adt. >> that's true but it is worth taking a shot. >> a lot of people like to be on the do-not-call registry but sometimes that's a trap too. >> criminals have started this lately, they'll call you up and say we'll help you get on the do not call list or we'll update your information. they pretend they're with the government. to do this we need your name, address and social security number. people are falling for this left and right. >> because they're sick of phone calls at dinner. >> if they're doing that, go to donotcall.gov. the website. that's the best way to get on there. >> we did that, they still call. >> this is probably most important for people at home -- your shopping online. >> hoda. >> i do that a lot. is your stuff secure when you do that? >> if you're going to a legitimate company it is secure. sometimes you don't know if the company -- you find a really great deal from some unknown place.
