the president just finishing this speech behind me. you bring up this issue of the nsa controversy. let me set the scene for you as far as the german public is concerned, the german media, and it's a hot topic here, and germans sensitive of the eavesdropping, and this has been a hot topic, one politically concerning to angela merkel, while the president is prepared on this issue, and here is how he addressed it at the press conference. take a listen. >> this is not a situation where we simply go into the internet and start searching any way that we want. it's a narrow system directed at us being able to protect our people, and all of it is done under the oversight of the

new investigation saying that was not an accident. tom costello is in washington. good morning to you. >> six former investigators, one with the ntsb, and the others representing other officers, and they claim there was an explosion outside of the aircraft, and the government they claim covered it up. that theory of a missile was thoroughly investigated in an exhaustive analysis that lasted four years and involved recovering the plane from the ocean floor and reconstructing it in a hangar. the explosion that brought down the plane was ignited by an electrical short. the producer of the documentary has been saying for years he believed the plane was brought down by criminal or terrorist action, and now he has a film appearing on the epics channel on the 17th anniversary of the

crash, and i just talked to the head of investigations and he says there was no evidence of an explosion of outside in, and all evidence suggested an inside out explosion on the fuel tank itself, in other words, not a missile. if it receive as petition to re-examine the findings it would look to see if there was compelling new evidence to suggest that the original findings were flawed before the tnsb with continue to pro. the current ntsb board members were not on the board when the crash occurred. the board has switched over and had a complete and exhaustive, if you will, review and turnover since then multiple times. back to you. >> thank you. and if you own a jeep, you want to listen to the next story. natalie has details on a major recall. >> it was a stunning reversal by chrysler involving jeeps that the government says could burst

into flames. details right now from nbc's don yang. the national highway traffic safety administration says are at risk of fuel tank fires and rear end collisions. >> the problem is the fuel tank is located behind the rear axle. >> hours before the tuesday deadline, chrysler agreed to a recall which is 1 million vehicles smaller than what the government first requested. chrysler will pay to fix the recalled vicks to better manage crash impacts. and that's if the analysis confirms the vehicles are not defective and among the safest

investigators will be back at it this morning after what they call an important day. they have been searching on their hands and knees meticulously sifting through piles of earth. at first glance it looked like an dig more than a crime scene. a cadaver dog hit on some remains. >> the dog worked the area and reacted to some scent, but we wouldn't call it conclusive. >> reporter: still it was in an area that investigators say they will be checking again. >> i know he is there. >> reporter: the fbi was led to the site by the son of a detroit mob boss and alleged to have been an under boss himself. a he was taken to a barn on this field after hoffa's disappearance, and he said he was buried alive in a shallow grave and covered for cement. >> they have been searching for

>> police in massachusetts spent hours on tuesday after a body was found near a vehicle rented in hernandez' name. police have said he is not a suspect. according to sports illustrated.com, police spoke to hernandez at his home outside of boston. a jogger found the body of a 27-year-old man monday in a clearing located less than a mile from hernandez' home. hernandez is not named as a suspect, although the vehicle he rented is connected to the investigation but not sure why. police took photos well into the night, and inside the home, the garage and in the driveway. a spokesperson for the new england patriots said i am aware of the reports but i do not

deceiving you by putting products on sale but really charging you a price that isn't as good as it sounds. also the battle between melissa etheridge and angelina jolie over jolie's decision to get a double mastectomy. why etheridge is standing by her comment that jolie made a fareful choice. let's begin with new details in the amanda knox case. italy's top court with strong words to explain it's decisions to order a retrial. michelle is in london. michelle, good morning to you. >> reporter: you know it was a stunning decision to retry this case after amanda knox and her then boyfriend first were convicted and then acquitted of killing amanda's roommate with virtually no physical evidence against them but now the court is saying it's the totality of the case that has to be looked at. not just the lack of dna or lack of any motive. amanda knox spent four years in

an italian prison convicted along with her then boyfriend of murdering amanda's roommate. then they were freed. convictions overturned. and then, this year, suddenly a reversal by a higher court meaning back to trial for both. now we learn why. the court saying there were serious deficiencies, contradictions and ill logic in the way those convictions were thrown out. circumstantial evidence was glossed over. for example that amanda blamed another man for the crime, originally said she pictured herself in the kitchen that night covering herself from meredith's screams and the court should have taken into account this could have been a sex game with multiple people which was particularly surprising in this explanation since at trial prosecutors didn't even use that scenario as a possibility. basically this court says much more should have been considered on review than the utter lack of

were falsified. the plane went down off the coast of long island, new york, just minutes after takeoff, killing all 230 people on board. nbc's tom costello covers aviation for us. tom, what can you tell bus this documentary? >> this is an independent film maker putting this together this look, this review of twa 800 w which, of course, crashed off long island in 1996. he claimed that six members of the investigative teams are coming forward now to raise serious concerns about the conclusions of that explosion. of that crash. you may recall that a fbi investigation and an ntsb investigation determined that an electrical short ignited vapors in a central fuel tank, and that caused the explosion. there were at the time some anecdotal calls or reports of some sort of a shoulder-fired missile that may have brought down the plane. but at the time the ntsb and faa were unable to find any conclusive data that would suggest that actually happened. now these six members are

survivor said she wouldn't call jolie's choice to have a preventive double mastectomy after testing positive for the gene brave. >> i think it's the most fearful choice you can make when confronting anything with cancer. that choice is way down the line on the spectrum of what you can do. etheridge says she too tested positive for the gene mutation that increases the risk of breast cancer. she developed the disease and underwent chemotherapy. and in a statement to today, etheridge said i don't have any opinion on what she should have done. all are free to choose. i only objected to the term brave describing it. jolie's decision made headlines when she announced it last month. time dubbed it the angelina effect. experts say the resulting conversation and debate are no surprise. >> cancer medicine is becoming increasingly personalized. it's a very public debate between two women facing the risk themselves captures an

>> they're already impulsive. imagine they're more irritable, impulsive, emotionally disregulated, it will be harder to get through the day. they will be tantruming, they'll be out of control. >> is the idea to get into a routine? what should you do if you have trouble putting your kids to sleep at night? >> routine is a big thing. understand how much sleep your kids need. most kids get less. a child up to 6 years old probably needs 12 hours of sleep -- >> amazing. >> 7 to 12-year-olds need tone 11 hours. >> once they start school they rarely get what they need. >> especially teenager who really need nine hours of sleep. the fact is, i don't know a teenager who gets nine hours of sleep at all. >> no. >> why whi-- which is why they' inattentive at school and have academic problems. >> let's talk about young kids. say your child doesn't sleep well and want to crawl in bed with you? is that a terrible no-no like they say in magazines? >> some families are comfortable

with that, but you need an exit point. at some point they need to be independent sleepers. if they wake up they can get themselves back to sleep. that requires training. >> one of the things to remember is a lot of kids come into mom or dad's bed for soothing. they want to be soothed by their parents. if that goes on too long, they never learn who do it by themselves. a problem down the road. >> self-soothing. >> routine is a good place to start. >> a routine. should they go to bed at the same time every night? >> yes, be consistent. >> hard in the summertime when the sun is still up. my father and mother made me go to bed, all of us kids, at 8:30 all the time. and the sun is still shining in -- >> that's weird. >> there's kids outside playing. >> it's hard. you know, bedtime in the summer can be a little later than the school year you had has to be consistent. week nights, weekends, same bedtime. if it's 8:00 one night, 8:30 the night -- >> it throws your clock off. >> and kids are negotiating. >> and you can keep the room dim at those times. the bedroom always feels like a safe sanctuary.

the negotiation is always part of the challenge. we're constantly -- we don't want to have a power struggle at bedtime. if everybody knows the vul we head to bed at 8:00, lights out at 8:30, read the same book, do the same thing -- >> they'll stretch as much as you let them. >> as much as you let them. the key for the parent is for putting the kid to bed. that's the parent's responsibility. the child's responsibility is falling asleep. i think we have to remember that the more we set the structure the better and healthier our kids will be. >> did your kids sleep okay when they were little? >> i always ended the evening with -- i think it's important, for me it was to pray every night. to give them a sense that in this big, ever-changing world there's something constant. >> that's the ritual. >> yeah. that was our ritual. they knew after that, mommy would turn on her kathie lee cd, and they were go to -- cota still does. >> yeah. -- hoda still does. >> yeah. >> frank still loves it. >> all right. thank you. >> good to see you. >> thank you. saving you some time in the
