good morning. we begin with new details in the death of "sopranos" star james gandolfini. gandolfini was, in fact, alive when he arrived to the hotel boscolo. he was found unresponsive in the bathroom of the hotel by his son. he called for help. paramedics arrived soon after and took him to a hospital about three minutes away. doctors worked on gandolfini for 45 minutes before he was sadly pronounced dead. he was just 51 years old, leaves behind a wife, a teenage son and a baby daughter. this morning no surprise, a lot of people speaking out about gandolfini's health. co-star lorraine bracco said we lost a giant to da, i am utterly heartbroken. robin williams tweeting out, an extraordinary actor, r.i.p.,

james gandolfini. chris christie says it's an awful shot, james gandolfini was a true jersey guy. just finding out the gandolfini family is holding a live press conference right now. let's listen in. >> last night at approximately 10:00 p.m. james gandolfini while on vacation in rome experienced a medical emergency. the hotel notified the emergency crews who responded and first aid was administered before mr. gandolfini was take tone the hospital where he died of an apparent heart attack. our prayers and condolences go to mr. gandolfini's family and friends. we ask you all to please respect the family's privacy at this difficult time. thank you. we have no comments to make other than this. >> very short statement there by a family representative of james gandolfini dieing yesterday in

italy at just 51 years old. it is 6:02 right now. this morning a teenage boy is clinging to life after a shooting in san jose. san jose police tell us the teen is still alive but in grave condition at the hospital. he was shot at least once just after 6:00 last night on virginia avenue near the rancho del pueblo golf course. the motive is unknown. a number of calls into police this morning. we'll bring you new information as soon as we get it. >> oakland police officers investigating a shooting. they tell us it might be linked to a robbery gone bad. the shooting happened after 10:00 near the corner of meade and san pablo avenues, not far from highway 980. the male victim is expected to be okay. no word yet on any suspects in this case. we can also tell you that shooting coming on a very busy day for oakland police. they say there were at least 13 armed robberies in less than 24

hours happening in west oakland yesterday alone. trouble down the tracks for b.a.r.t. this morning as a potential strike is looming. "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live in fremont with more details on the impact of a possible b.a.r.t. strike. >> reporter: good morning, laura. b.a.r.t. union workers will be out at stations this morning. we haven't seen them just yet. they'll be handing out this flier letting riders know that their contract expires in just ten days. now, that could mean that eventually there may be a strike. but i have to tell you the riders we're speaking with this morning didn't know anything about it. union leaders saying they don't really want to go on@qxstrike. their flier says they want fair pay and safer working conditions. for riders, right now, they're wondering what they would do. they don't want to be stuck in gridlock on bay area freeways. add to that america's cup racing sets sail in san francisco in july. b.a.r.t. is part of the plan to get all the spectators there.

this morning, one man who started commuting from fremont to san francisco says he hopes talk of this work stoppage will end. >> quite a built. i'd probably have to find another form of transportation, taking my car which would cost a lot more. it would change a lot of things. >> reporter: you hadn't heard about? >> no, i hadn't heard anything about it. maybe because i'm here so early in the morning. >> reporter: if a deal is not reached within ten days, the governor could call for a 60-day cooling off period, about that time when caltrans is hoping to shut down the bay bridge. the timing of all this is a real challenge. b.a.r.t. is working on a contingency plan and we're told that negotiations are on going. reporting live in fremont, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> looks like things are getting ugly as a bar fight is brews in the quiet upscale city of sarasota. >> it's a bar. it's a freaking bar. i don't care what kind, you understand? >> let me correct that, that is saratoga. i misspoke there.

tempers flaring in front of the future meza kobar. the owner says he plans to zephyr tapas but he has applied for a liquor license as well. the restaurant will be open until 2:00 in the morning. it has the green light from the city, but some neighbors are now worried it will be full-blown bar. one man says the restaurant's parking lot is just a mere 50 feet away from his children's bedroom windows. >> what do you think, what is the range of behavior that people can exhibit when they are intoxicated with alcohol? can it be lewd behavior? you betcha. >> not everybody agrees on this one. fellow restaurant owners say the downtown area is, quote, dead, and meza bar will breathe new life into the quiet streets. the owner once ran the now closed kit cat strip club in sunnyvale. the city says it will never become that. the owner is currently out of town but says he will meet with

neighbors to answer their questions and concerns when he gets back in august. certainly doesn't feel like august temperatures here. >> we're approaching summer. >> indeed, tonight as a matter of fact, it begins. starting with the live picture from san bruno. break out the sunner in shades or the transition lens, whatever does the trick for you. you'll need something this morning. it is bright out there. even with all that sunshine coming in early, we'll see highs very representative of the averages this time of year. temperatures this morning not too cold. we're in the upper 40s, even in the coldest spot. 54 degrees in san jose, 47 in gilroy and 52 degrees to start the day in livermore. here is what we're looking at. winds have relaxed overnight. that's a good sign because it's rather blustery through the east bay hills the past couple days. your hour-by-hour forecast works like this, 72 inland, at noon 81 degrees, 72 bay side. at the coast today 65 degrees.

then we'll heat you up and bring in rain showers for two consecutive days next week. i'll show you when your seven-day forecast coming up next. first the sunrise slow down. >> the sunrise problem with seeing the bay bridge toll plaza. that's a long name. i'll do something better than the fonz wasable to do. i would say i was wr, wr, i was wrong. turned on just before 6:00, not just after 6:00. from our emeryville shot we can r(t&háhp &hc you see the folks held up to the left. they're let loose. they're cycling through relatively quickly. that indicates a smoother flow of traffic and a lighter flow on the bridge right there. we'll track the backup there. the map shows you the maze moves nicely and smoothly through the area. we have slowing around the race track for westbound 80. north 238 off west 580 around redwood road is where you start to seeing the slowing through castro valley.

880 through san lorenzo and hayward, still moving smoothly in the southbound commute direction. for the north bay, southbound 101 coming toward us, an easy drive. we have a sig alert declared heading up into petaluma north 101, reports after a sdis abled big rig blocking one of your two lanes. that's in petaluma. if you're fonzie, that makes laura pinky tuscadero. parking in redwood city might be easier as long as you keep your smart phone with you, the city piloting a brand new app called parker. they use sensors embedded in street parking spaces to detect whether there's a car parked there. the app shows where spots are available, how many there are and how much it will cost your to park there. 6:09. coming up, what a catch? >> the baby was struggling and it slipped and was dangling and

threatened to walk off the job. a boy scout ranch in colorado has been evacuated due to a wildfire. the east peak fire scorched 60 acres since yesterday. so far firefighters have zero containment. a close friend of actor james gandolfini giving a brief statement as questions are surrounding his sudden death. we learned gandolfini discovered an apparent heart attack in his hotel room in rome. doctors tried to save him for 45 minutes before he was pronounced dead at the hospital. gandolfini was 51 years old. new this morning, facebook-owned instagram making big changes. >> we're hours away from the social media site's latest announcement. it's something every user of the popular site will likely notice. if rumors prove true, it's a direct swipe at twitter? >> you need to know the players. facebook and twitter are the big companies. each has a service. facebook has instagram and twitter has something called vine. facebook, if the talk is true, is a bit jealous of twitter. let's check in with marla. she's right outside the planned press conference this morning. marla, the sign behind you, a strong hint as to what's going to happen. >> reporter: no doubt about that. good morning, scott. i think mr. zuckerberg is trying to tell us something, the sign behind me right in front of facebook headquarters reads a small team has been working on a big idea. that big idea could very well be that brand new video sharing service through instagram. so perhaps soon you'll be able to create short videos on the photo sharing app and not just still images. as scott and i were actually talking off camera, this story is just as much an instagram story as it is a facebook one. just because you're an instagrañ

user doesn't mean you have to post to facebook but it's certainly an option. one thought here is if facebook gets instagram to offer more, maybe you'll see more sharing on facebook and more videos, perhaps fancier and prettier videos, if you're able to alter or edit them like you can currently with photos, exactly how this service will work, for example, how long would the videos be able to be? these are all the details we'll just have to wait to hear. first and foremost, we need to see if the rumor mill is turning out truth this morning, if, in fact, facebook is going to be introducing a new video-sharing service. our colleague, scott butt man, will be out here for the big 10:00 announcement. >> we'll bring more at 11:00 with your show as well. this whole short video thing, if you're unfamiliar with the genre, the port short video. here is an example of vines, this is offered by twitter.

they're deliberately short, someone made a fun animation in a skillet pan. they're short because they're made and watched somewhere around mobile devices. anybody can make a long video on youtube. these are supposed to be short. the question is,000 twitter or facebook, if today's news is true, is going to monetize this. how do they make money on this sort of video? microsoft will not require you to have a constant connection to the internet to use this new xbox game 1 machine. gamers were furious, many saying they would buy a play station instead to which xbox said, whoops, i think we made a mistake. you remember john mcafee, still wanted as a person of interest in the death of his neighbor in belize. last year he escaped the united states, lives in portland now and he's been quiet until he posted this video on youtube. >> hello there.

beautiful. thanks for waking up with us at 6:17. not sure what you're off to do today. maybe you were off for the summertime with your kids. great day to get them on outdoors. going to be really beautiful.&r this is the campbell water tower. i call campbell home. wherever you call home in the bay area, it's going to be beautiful. temperatures not too hot, not too cold. 46 in napa, good morning in san francisco. let's talk about where we're headed today. temperatures will be warmer by about three to five degrees than where we ended up yesterday as high pressure starts to move in. it's going to drive our temperatures up getting into the next couple days. we'll max on saturday at about 88 degrees, not even hitting on the 90 z. as we get into next week, an area of low pressure races down the coastline. it will bring us showers monday into tuesday. the best chance is going to be at the north bay coast. we could pick up anywhere between .10 inch, maybe .1500

inch of rain. that will be the biggest impact. for the first monday and tuesday of summertime, showers in the bay area. let's talk about summertime, what's going to happen as we head through 10:04 tonight. basically, for half of the year, sue northern hemisphere. for the months of june, july, august, september, the way that the earth is tilted on its axis actually faces us towards that sun. that's why we warm up. today, 80 degrees in livermore, 75 in fremont, warmer by tomorrow, up to 87 on friday. saturday into sunday, temperatures do start to drop off and then we bring in that rain monday into tuesday. we're keeping it interesting in the weather department. he's always keeping it fun and interesting. always something happening out there, mike. good morning to you. >> thank goodness, nothing happened. over in palo alto, i spun the camera around. just to clarify, that's a little triangle. this is the off-ramp, that's the

gore point and the reverse is folks heading out tont on ram. there wasññ reports of a dog running around the freeway. that car left just as i turned the camera toward it. i don't see a dog running around. it might have been a good samaritan. everything looks okay, except fors digital signal. let's move to another camera where we get a smoother look at the traffic. this is west 92 towards the peninsula. coming off the san mateo bridge, a heavier volume but at the limit across the bridge. the limit for the bridge. you hear close to the limit, no problems on the peninsula side. east bay side, we'll see slowing, not on 880 so much. that's just starting to build south through hayward, but coming off the castro valley y showing a good amount of congestion. then things ease towards 880. that's nothing unusual. the tri-valley moves smoothly here. speeds coming down just around 50 as you come through

livermore, the worst slowing around vasco, all the way towards 680 you have speeds coming down a bit just in the speeds below the limit. the on-ramp for stoneridge drive, we had an earlier crash around the on-ramp, still reporting by chp, watch for the activity out of pleasanton. the south bay moves smoothly north 101. a quick peek at that volume, a bit of slowing on the camera. it's a nice easy drive, guys, despite the couple spots. we want to tell you about a lifesaving catch from the daughter ofe&q legendary baseb figure. her name, christina torre. her dad is former yankee manager joe torre. she says she was sitting in a cafe in new york when somebody screamed a baby was dangling from a fire escape. torre stood beneath the baby and when the boy nell, hit his head on a restaurant awning before amazingly falling right into

afghanistan in june of 2009. the taliban spokesperson says the army sergeant is in good condition. we have new video this morning of president obama back on american soil this morning after a brief trip over to europe. this is air force one touching down at andrews air force base late last night after three days working on international issues, the president will get back to his domestic agenda today. he is slated to talk to democraticom> senators behind closed doors about comprehensive immigration reform. on capitol hill, lawmakers say they are close to working out a compromised immigration bill. many key senators worked on the bill late into the night during a round of secret talks. the bill would grant legal status to millions of people living in the u.s. illegally. it would also double the size of the border patrol and construct hundreds of miles of new fencing along the u.s.-mexico border. it would also provide new surveillance drones. jerry brown calling this ping-pong diplomacy.

borrowed money out there on the markets. the ultimate source of that easy money, the fed said yesterday it would discontinue bond buying. the fed essentially invents money. it can do that, and it takes that invented money and buys bonds. that money floods into the economy. the more money you have, the cheaper it is to borrow. all of this goes away at some point, probably next year. we expect another rough day on the markets today. if it's any consolation, john, we're starting to see the real value of the american sock markets and american companies, not the fake value we've been seeing for so long propped up by that extra cash. 6:31 right now. dozens of men and women arrested in santa clara's biggest gang bust in history will be back in court. the allege ld members of the nuestra familia gang will be in

a san jose courtroom for bail hearings. some could enter their pleas. ma first court appears last week, facing a variety of charges including robbery, drug sales and murder. this morning the oakland police department will introduce the city's five district commanders. earlier this year the police department began implementing its neighborhood policing plan. part of that plan was to put captains and lieutenants in charge of five police districts that together make up the entire city of oakland. today the leaders will discuss crime production and prevention plans tailored for their individual areas. redwood city paid nearly $50,000 to set al lawsuit where police tased a teenager. the lawsuit says back in september of 2010 marcella perez was leaving éñ a safe way with friend. his friend had stolen a bottle of alcohol. the suit claims two officers confronted perez and forced him to the ground after he reached into his pocket for his cell phone. while on the ground, one of

off-ramp. chp is sitting out to the area. there are extra eyes watching at least for the next few minutes. watch the slow drive as you're heading toward the bay bridge toll plaza. the maps show things moving smoothly. over the bridge, the bay bridge metering lights are on. 880 hi ward into union city, speeds coming in towards 50 miles per hour, still the same slowing at 580 and 238, the castro valley y. a smoother drive also to the south of the area and coming out of the try area. a pretty typicalú%=pattern. slower now 84 towards 680. a look at san jose, northbound 101 shows things really bogging down north of 680 and slow of tullie road towards san jose international airport. 87 slowing into downtown. a man is under arrest after police say he threw a spear at a passing car in sacramento. officers say jeffrey jones threw

a 30-pound spear at a vehicle which hit the front fender. then he was snapped in this very memorable mugshot. the six-foot metal weapon got lodged in the vehicle. police found the 56-year-old jones near the scene and arrested him on charges of assault with a deadly weapon. >> i think we've held that up just long enough. it's 6:36. a patriots player linked to a murder probe. we'll tell you why police are searching his home even though he hasn't been named a suspect. new details about a separate lawsuit about to be filed against him. we also want to take you back down to press cot, arizona. a lot of smoke, still some flames down there as firefighters battle this wildfire. reports are telling us this one having trouble getting under control. zero percent contained. they have winds down there, up to 20 miles per hour and the searing heat down in the desert making this a tough one to fight. we'll keep you posted as information comes in.

a court appearance expected. bond willúq÷ be set today for 21-year-old suspect dezara sillsby, also accused of swamming the woman's hand in a door and smashing it with a rock. the other three suspects will have bond hearings on monday.

homicide investigators say there is a link between a player for the new england patriots and the victim of a homicide, but this morning it's still unclear what that link is. this week investigators have been searching the home of tight end aaron hernandez in connection to this case. hernandez has not been named as a suspect. investigators say they found the body of a 27-year-old person named oden lloyd found at a home about a mile from where hernandez lives in north addle borrow. so far no comment from hernandez. >> not the only legal issue hernandez is facing this morning. a civil lawsuit is being filed against the athlete accusing him of shooting a friend in the face. 30-year-old alexander bradley says hernandez shot him back in february after the two got into an argument at a miami nightclub. he says they left in a car together and during the ride hernandez allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed it at bradley.

it was the city's 19th deadly traffic crash of the year. 6:51. it was all a hoax. the 10-year-old pacifica girl who told police a man tried to kidnap her admits she made it all up. the girl told police a man tried to grab her near beach boulevard and santa rosa avenue around 6:30 sunday night. she told officers she punched the man and was able to get away. a friend actually backed up the story. during the investigation police say their statements didn't add up. when questioned, both the alleged victim and her friend admitted they lied about the attack. a followup on the couple not so affectionately known as the landlords from hell. kipp and nicole macy will spend four years behind bars when sentenced in august. the san francisco district attorney says the couple has pleaded guilty to charges of burglary, stalking and attempted grand theft. the macys used very extreme measures trying to drive tenants out of their four-unit building in the city's south of market district including sawing holes
