good morning. happy friday. here's what's coming up on "early today." south beach is in a frenzy after the heat capture their second consecutive nba championship. stocks tank with the dow losing 560 points in two days. we'll tell you what's ahead today. tensions are rising as a million people turn out to protest brazil's government. plus, the gift of hearing for one little boy after a one of a kind surgery. more details on the death of james gandolfini. and a traffic cop gets the shock of a lifetime. proved to be one for the ages. shane battier was on fire going 6 for 8 behind the three-point arc and keeping the game close in the first half. with the game tied, dwyane wade hits a two-point jumper heading into the locker room in the half. lebron james hits one of his five three-pointers to give the heat a five-point lead. but the spurs won't give up. ginobili ditched and cuts the lead to one. to the fourth we go with a three-point lead. lebron drives to the hoop, get it to battier. then in the final seconds, lebron drives right through the open shot and hits the dagger. >> the spurs will not foul. final seconds, what a finish.

it's back-to-back titles for the heat! the 2013 nba championship resides once again in miami. >> that is one of the best nba series i have seen. lebron james was given the bill russell nba finals most valuable player award for the second straight year. heat executive pat riley, who built this team, wins his ninth nba championship. congrats to them. to wall street now, futures are looking up this morning. though you might argue there was nowhere else to go. back to back sell-offs across the board drove stocks to their worst day of the year. down about 5% from may's all-time highs. the tipping point, word from the federal reserve chairman that cheap borrowing will soon come to an end as the economy continues to improve. but as cnbc's maria bartiromo points out, there may be a silver lining. >> every time we've seen a sell-off of 5%, a lot of people were expecting a correction of 5%. each time we've seen that, that

selling has been met by buyers. they call it the so-called buy on the dip mentality. >> nbc's tracie potts has details, including what this means for homeowners. tracie, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. here's how you connect what's going on on wall street with the average american. when the fed says we're going to pull some of our support because the economy's doing better, that means interest rates may go up. if you're buying a car or sending a kid to college or, as you note, if you're buying a home. the housing market has been doing pretty well. take a look at the may numbers. 5 million homes sold in the month of may. that's up 4% from a month earlier. up almost 13% from a year earlier. the median home sale price right now for existing homes is $208,000. that's up 15% year over year. in fact, we've seen double-digit increases for six months in a row. so the market is correcting itself to help sellers. it had been a buyers' market for so long. what we're waiting to see this morning is what is going to

happen on wall street. are we going to see what we've seen in europe so far this morning and with the nikkei? are they going to rally? or are we looking at a third straight day of losses? >> i hope it's not a third straight day. thank you so much. and then there were six. the jury is seated in george zimmerman's second degree murder trial and his fate is in the hands of six women. prosecutors say five of them are white. the sixth is black or hispanic. four alternates, two men and two women, were also chosen. zimmerman's attorney says the process was fair and race neutral. he says it led to a fair and impartial panel. >> while people can look at it and have this reaction, there's no blacks in the jury, or there's no this or there's no that or there's no men on the jury, tell me we did something wrong in the process and i'll agree with you. >> in response to jury

selection, trayvon martin's family said in part, quote, equal justice under the law is not a black value or a white value, it's an american value. we expect the jury pool to do their duty and be fair and impartial. zimmerman has pleaded not guilty in the death of trayvon martin. the results of an autopsy for iconic actor james gandolfini are expected in about two hours. gandolfini died late tuesday after suffering cardiac arrest. loved ones are remembering him as a man of extraordinary talent and had poignant words from his "sopranos" wife. she said in part, the love between tony and carmela was one of the greatest i've ever known. gandolfini will live on through his work. before his death, he wrapped production on two feature films, both expected out next year. to washington now and a breakthrough that could pave the pathway to citizenship for 11 million people.

a bipartisan group of people reached a deal to strengthen border security in the senate's immigration bill. >> if you want the border secured like i do, your ship has come in. this is a border surge. we have militarized our border almost. >> meanwhile on the house bill, a sweeping five-year farm bill was defeated due to the $2 billion it would have slashed from snap, better known as the food stamp program. and reports of a compromise from senators on both sides of the aisle could keep student loan rates from doubling on july 1st. heavy rains are causing major flooding in southern canada. as many as 100,000 residents may have to evacuate. emergency crews are encouraging everyone in the area to head north. a state of emergency is in place as more rain is expected in the coming days. not what they need. all right. here's a look at the weekend forecast. the first day of summer, bring it on, bill. >> i know. bring some of that rain down to the southwest, though. >> yeah, they need it.

>> the fire situation continues to get worse. going into yesterday, we had 19 large fires. at the end of yesterday, this number they said went up somewhere between 24 to 26. so this number increased. the red flag warnings continue in that region. it was 106 yesterday in phoenix. today it's about 96. somewhere in the 90s in northern arizona. a little breezy in that region. now, the opposite of that is northern idaho, montana, up through portions of eastern washington state. our storm continues to spin. it's kind of cool, it's cloudy. it's almost a little raw out there. the temperatures today are going to once again be in the low 60s for highs with cloudy skies and occasional rain around spokane and all portions of the northern half of idaho. kind of a split forecast. in the north and west, it's cool. in the southwest, it continues hot and dry. you see that today. 107 in phoenix. that's your national fore

he was run over by an suv. millions of people are now involved in rallying against the government corruption and high taxes. the taliban is proposing a deal that could result in the freeing of a kidnapped american soldier. beau berdahl has been held since 2009. in exchange, leaders want five of their most senior officers released from guantanamo bay. an ohio man was sentenced to at least 36 years in prison after being convicted by the blink of an eye, literally. ricardo woods was found guilty of murder after the then-paralyzed victim identified him by the only way he could communicate, blinking his eyes. and one florida police officer got more than he bargained for during a traffic stop. check this out. in the middle of writing a ticket, a monkey, look at it right here, comes out from behind the seat and bit the officer. everyone is okay, but that little guy is still going bananas over that speeding ticket. well, the first study on

assault was done by the world health organization. it finds 30% of women ages 15 and up have suffered from some form of domestic abuse. they are not surprised, noting highly publicized incidents involving celebrities like rihanna and chef nigella lawson. now for an early look at business, we turn to cnbc. good morning, kayla. >> good morning. markets could see a rebound today after stocks suffered their worst day of the year. the dow dropping more than 350 points. investors are still worried about the prospect of higher interest rates after the fed hinted it could start scaling back stimulus efforts as the economy keeps improving. when the fed goes ahead with that, it could mean it will cost you more to take out a mortgage.

rates on other loans like auto, student, and credit cards likely won't raise much in the future. the faa is likely to relax a ban on certain electronic devices on planes, giving passengers a little leeway on takeoff and landing. >> thank you, kayla. the white house is, again, delaying requiring new cars and trucks come equipped with rear view cameras. 17,000 are injured each year by backover accidents. instagram is adding video for their 130 million monthly users. the new feature will allow 15-second clips. people can throw in captions and hash tags, just like when sharing a picture. there's been a spike in dvd sales and download of the sopranos following the death of james gandolfini. sales jumped to second place. among the best sellers, it sells for $124.99.

have a different kind. a little boy about to hear the voice of his dad for the very first time. nbc's kate snow has the remarkable and heart-tugging story. >> reporter: 3-year-old grayson clamp was back at his doctor's office today for a checkup. grayson was born with a host of medical issues, open heart surgery as an infant, vision loss in one eye and no auditory nerves in either ear. but about four weeks ago after a ground-breaking surgery, little grayson heard his dad's voice for the very first time. >> daddy loves you. daddy loves you. can you hear daddy? >> reporter: mom nicole was smoothing the video. >> when they turned that thing on and it worked, he responded to that sound, it was like the weight was lifted off of me. because it was just a long road getting there. >> reporter: this is a milestone. grayson's implant requires brain surgery and he's the first child to receive one as part of an fda approved trial.

>> my dream for him is that he will develop intelligible speech and he'll be able to function independently, pretty much what, you know, any mom wants for their little boy. >> reporter: they feel blessed to be the first and hope other children will experience that same joy. >> daddy loves you. >> reporter: kate snow, nbc news, new york. >> that reaction is so priceless. let's get you some sports now. new england patriots aaron hernandez was out and about around boston yesterday. he's still refusing to tell reporters what police are asking him. authorities searched his home and nearby property this week following the shooting death of a man who police say was dating the sister of hernandez's girlfriend. the body of odon lloyd was found about a mile from hernandez's home. for now, though, attorneys for hernandez will only confirm a connection to the investigation. now, all of this, though, happens to hernandez on the heels of a civil lawsuit where a man accuses the pro bowl tight

end of shooting him in the face during an argument in florida. attorneys for hernandez haven't commented on that lawsuit, which seeks at least $100,000 in damages. hernandez is one year into a seven-year contract with the patriots worth $41 million. over eager fans in china stampeded past a police line, literally, and injured at least seven people yesterday when david beckham arrived for a seven-day promotional tour for a chinese soccer league. people just love him. none of the injuries are serious, thankfully. beckham released a statement sending his wishes to the injured fans. amy wombach passed mia hamm for the most international goals when she scored her 156th goal last night against south korea. the u.s. beat south korea 5-0. congrats to her. to baseball, catch out this incredible catch by a twins' ball game.
