highway 37 will be very crowded as you head over to sonoma raceway. this is 101 headed to the area. an earlier crash northbound side approaching 580. sounds like the activity just about wrapped up. it was out of the lanes. we'll show you the golden gate bridge, also 101, also connecting the city with the north bay. you see you still have the signs and the cones there. we'll have to move those over the next half hour. i say we, i mean the people doing the work. >> we know you're there in spart. get together the top news now, police in three peninsula cities right now on the hunt this morning all looking for the very same man. police say this man, 20-year-old pell vin bellard is responsible for a string of burglaries that started in april. bellard allegedly broke into three separate homes in belmont in a matter of minutes. police say he later broke into a home in san mateo, only this time a woman came home and scared him off. hillsborough police started

chasing him. he was able to get away, but his car was later found in san francisco with about $30,000 worth of stolen goods still inside. >> higgs time will come, i'm sure. especially doing something like that. you can only get lucky so long until everything catches up with you. >> investigators say bellard lives in san francisco but he has strong ties to the east bay. down in the south bay, san jose police are talking about ways to keep the community safe this weekend. the department says it expects retaliation for the city's latest murder. this morning the suspects in the killing of 16-year-old manuel ursilla are still on the loose. police say a gang mob beat him and shot him wednesday night. he died yesterday at the hospital. the attack happened on virginia avenue near the intersection of story and king roads. the killing is the city's 25th homicide of the year. now an nbc bay area follow up. police need your help finding the family of this man. take a look.

he was severely beaten in downtown san jose, so badly he can't actually speak now. oh remains at santa clara valley medical center. police say because he's unable to communicate, they need relatives to make critical medical decisions for him. he was beat up under the highway 87 overpass between san fernando and santa clara streets around 1:00 in the afternoon on june 9th. police are also looking for witnesses. a 16-year-old boy behind bars this morning in gilroy standing accused of stabbing another teenager. a 17-year-old victim walked into the emergency room at saint louise regional hospital at 8:15 wednesday night. he had a stab wound to his upper body. he's saying he was stabbed near the corner of 10th street and monterey road. that's just off highway 101. police set up a perimeter in that area and they were able to track down and arrest the 16-year-old suspect nearby. police say the stabbing may be gang related. hollywood's spotlight is

shining broke at oakland's great lake theater. last night was the premier of "fruitvale station," a film about the life of oscar grant. all the stars, take a look, in the movie walked the red carpet, including octavius spencer who plays oscar grant's mother and also forest whitacre, one of the producer. the movie takes you through grant's life before being shot and killed by a b.a.r.t. police officer on new year's day 2009. the director is oakland native ryan kugler. he felt his story needed to be told. >> it's hard being a young african-american male from this place, i think everyone was affected. >> "fruitvale station" opens nationwide on july 12th. a federal court ruling will release thousands of california prisoners, yesterday a federal court ordering the release of nearly 10,000 inmates to relieve prison overcrowding. that ruling says the state must

reduce the population down to 110,000 inmates by december 31st. right now the population is over by about 9,400 inmates. since 2006, california's already shed 46,000 inmates. there's a lot of low-level non-violent offenders move to county jails. governor brown right now now a fan of inmates being let go saying the release of more prisoners could endanger public safety. 4:36. it is a big reopening that's costing some serious money. berkeley's famous restaurant, chez penisse will open its doors today almost four months after it caught fire. today is half party, half fund-raiser for the edible school yard project which teaches kids about healthy eeth. seats cost from $1,000 to $2500 per person. it's own by world renowned chef

ness, but it does look like things are off to the shoulder. i'll keep checking that. we have a smooth flow of traffic onto and off of the decks for the bay bridge t. golden gate bridge, let's get a live look, we talked about the folks moving the cones since the last report. they've already moved a lot of those and they're making their way to the north side of the bridge. the crew on the span right now, but no real problems because of the light flow of traffic. >> appreciate it, mike. 4:39 right now. in an effort to keep one of the bay area's most popular parks full of beautiful trees, it's suddenly in jeopardy, that's because vandals are killing newly planted trees in golden gate park in san francisco. it's cost about $50,000 in damages so far, also setting back a plan to replace hundreds of dieing trees there. city recreation and park officials say over the last nine months somebody has destroyed 200 young trees. the latest bunch planted near the great highway. the tops are being snapped so those trees will most likely die

markets, thursday the worst day so far as investors continue to be anxious about the looming end of the fed's stimulus program. that begs the question, what does this all mean for your money. kayla taush she is live at cnbc headquarters with a look at the market performance along with the impact possibly on your wallet. kayla, good morning. >> roller coaster ride not over yet. futures sharply higher which is good news. stocks suffered their worst day of the year yesterday. investors are worried about the prospect of higher interest rates after the fed hinted it could start scaling back its stimulus efforts as the economy keeps improving. the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 falling more than 2%, the dow falling below 15,000, the nasdaq losing 78 to 3,365. when the fed goes ahead with the plans, how might it affect you? first and foremost, it will cost you more to take out a mortgage. the average rate on a 30-year fixed load hit 3.39%.

mortgage rates are tied to the yield on the ten-year treasury bond which has been steadily rising as well. analysts say mortgage rates aren't likely to rise much further unless the economy strengthens significantly. they say rates on auto, student and credit cards won't rise much as they're more closely tied to the fed's trending rate which is set to stay put for a little while. >> kayla, appreciate the update. we'll check back later on. crews in press cot, arizona, are starting to get a handle on this large wildfire burning since tuesday. so far only 10% of the flames have been contained and 7,500 acres have been scorched. more than 450 homes are currently under' vak asian, but none has been destroyed. there are no reports of any injuries. a little bit of good news there. >> pretty rough with all the hot temperatures. firefighters have their work caught out for them. 4:45. we have nothing but sunny skies. beautiful up here. >> yeah. it's going to be absolutely

then as we head through monday, tuesday, wednesday, we keep showers in the forecast. so the first week of summer is going to feel a whole lot more like the first week of fall with temperatures dropping off as well. today, though, not too bad. great day to get outdoors. 84 degrees in livermore, 86 in concord, 67 degrees in san francisco. you know why the rain is also good? for our fire weather. it's going to keep a lot more moisture in the atmosphere and that's good for us. 77 degrees by tuesday. wednesday into thursday, a big ridge of high pressure is headed our way that's when we are expecting that fire danger to become elevated once again. keep that in mind. overall, though, looking good. changes headed our way. change is good. over to you. it is 4:47 right now. violent protests in the streets of brazil very intense this morning. millions of protesters flooding the streets in more than 80 cities across the country. in the capital demonstrations storming the congress building as officers try to fight the

massive crowds with teargas. that outrage originally started after a recent hike in public transportation fares. but it's now representing a much larger problem, problems like perceived corruption and poor public services. all this chaos happening as brazil gets ready for a visit from the pope, next year's world cup soccer and the olympics in 2016. in mumbai, india, at least ten people are dead now including one child after a three-story building collapses. police officials say it came crashing down early this morning while most of the people were sleeping. searchers and the crews there have rescued about 20 people from all that rubble. an investigation has just gotten under way. that collapse coming just two months after another building in that area gave way, more than 70 people were killed during that collapse. within the past hour, an autopsy confirmed what many of us believed, "sopranos" star

james gandolfini died of a heart attack. the actor collapsed in his hotel room wednesday night in rome. his 13-year-old son was there and called for help. medics tried to revive him for about 40 minutes. he was declared dead at the hospital. >> very, very sad scene there. speaking of rome, visitors there being denird one of the world's most iconic structures, locked out of italy's famed coliseum. workers there on strike asking for longer hours on sundays and on holidays to accommodate more tourists and, of course, earn more money. ministry officials oppose the request saying they do not have the money to pay for the extra work hours. at this point it's not clear exactly how long workers intend to be off the job. it is 4:49. the largest gathering of liberal activists in the country continues this morning in the silicon valley. last night president obama addressed the crowd of more than 3,000 people at the networks nation convention in san jose via this video message.

he called on the activists for help moving his agenda forward, addressing issues like gun control, immigration reform, the affordable care act and rebuilding the middle class. the convention runs through sunday. this morning the u.s. secretary of transportation will be stopping by san francisco's commonwealth club. secretary ray lahood will give a keynote speech for this year's min net that transportation institute policy summit. he'll join other leaders as they talk about the financial challenges facing our nation's infrastructure. the event begins this morning at 9:00. it is free to the public. right now we have pretty incredible video out of china this morning. you got to see it. it appears to show a child being rescued after a fall. the child fell from about five stories. >> look at this security camera video. a group of security men saw the 2-year-old girl dangling five stories up. they gathered underneath the window and the girl fell right into their arms. state media reported the girl's

parents saying they left her home alone while she was sleeping, but she climbed out the window once she woke up. two of the men were injured during the rescue. the little girl escaped with only a mere scratch on her face. >> that is unbelievable. we were just yesterday reporting in new york joe torre's daughter catching a child. >> stay away from the windows. >> and stay home with your children. that's ridiculous. 4:51. calling this one, the heat peace. big celebrations down there in full swing as the city celebrates its second straight nba's championship. >> it's lebron's fault i'm so tired. plus colin kaepernick getting ready to wear a new jersey. 49er faithful, no reason to panic. we'll explain why. we're looking over here to the coliseum. 880 shows a lot of activity southbound side, an ambulance or flashing lights. trying to get a clear shot of this so we can tell you exactly what's going on. looks like at least one lane blocked after a crash there. more details coming up.
