from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie. live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. i'm matt lauer. >> good morning. i'm savannah guthrie along side al roker and tamryn hall. it's kind of an unusual morning around here. >> it is. we arranged to do an interview with paula deen. the discussions were going on throughout the day yesterday. i spoke to her late afternoon on the phone yesterday and we talked about the fact it would be an open and candid discussion. no holds barred. all questions within the bounds of what we would talk about and she flew to new york. arrived here last night and we started to hear she was exhausted and this morning, although we have not spoken to her, she has not called us, her publicity people have told us she is exhausted and will not be

showing up, so that's where we stand right now. >> this is in the wake of course of some revelations that she used racial colors in the past, and she agreed to come on and agreed to talk about that but we will not be seeing paula deen this morning. >> apparently not. meantime, the dangerously close call is a focus of an investigation by the federal aviation administration. >> how did two planes loaded with passengers get so close to each other. think about it. 200 feet is about the distance of two basketball courts. it's like from the corner of our studio here just across the street there. it's incredibly close for two planes traveling at a great deal of speed. >> let's get to tom costello. he covers aviation for us. tom, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this happened in the busiest air space. they were at different altitudes but came as close as.4 of a mile horizontal and 200 feet vertical. they were headed in different directions but came very close to each other.

>> a close call in the skies over new york city as a delta boeing 747 clear to land at kennedy airport missed an approach and for a short time ended up flying in the same direction as a shuttle american 170 regional jet leaving the runway. the planes came within 200 feet of each other in the air before both landing safely. in an audio transmission from the control tower, you can hear air traffic controllers warning one of the pilots. >> 172 heavy, are you turning? >> yes, sir, we're almost at 040 now. >> delta, 172, traffic 12:00. 1400 feet, 1600 feet. >> okay we got him on the fish finder here. >> incident took place last week. it's not clear why the delta pilot made the decision not to land at kennedy, but a standard procedure called a missed approach is regulated by specific procedures for pilots and controllers. the faa is releasing a statement saying the two aircraft were turning away from each other at

the point where they lost the required separation. >> reporter: delta airlines is cooperating with the investigation, and sprieparatel- this is big news for anybody that flies. the faa tells nbc news this morning that it's likely to relax some of the ban on using personal electronic devices at low altitudes. currently the faa requires passengers to keep their electronic devices shut off below 10,000 feet and an advisory panel is looking into whether it's time to revise that rule and allow people to use their electronic devices. the panel has until september to do it's work but we're told the faa will likely go along for allowing e-readers but probably not cell phones. at least not yet. guys, back to you. tom costello. thank you very much. a lot of nervous investors are keeping a close eye on wall street this morning. an eighth straight day of triple digit activity. the dow, s&p, nasdaq all down 2%.

jim cramer is host of "mad money." good to see you. biggest two-day percentage drop since november of 2011. thursday's losses knocked out all the gains for may and june. you look calm as a cucumber. why? >> you tend to have this level of volatility when those turn. it's nothing worth panicking over. those that are selling aggressively are going to regret it. >> it's frustrating because there seems to be a disconnect. ben bernanke speaks out on wednesday and says the fed is go ease up on buying bonds. the reason is because the economy is getting strong enough to stand on it's own. if the economy is better, why would the market tank like this? >> people don't ever want to think, you know what, i can do better in bonds than stocks. a lot of people are hiding in stocks. good dividends, good yield. the bond market is safer so they're selling stocks to buy bonds and people who are in

bonds are freaking out too because they think the fed is no longer going to support them. there's uncertainly everywhere. >> the bigger picture here, it's about interest rates. historically low for a long time and now interest rates are going to go up. do you think right now, if your opinion, is the economy strong enough right now to with stand the concept of money getting more expensive. >> yes. yes, it is. doesn't seem like it because we don't have the employment growth we want but at the same time we have a lot of industries doing really strong. i wish our foreign trading partners -- i wish china was doing better, and europe was doing better. we're the strongest country in the world right now. >> president obama gave an interview recently and talked about looking for a successor for ben bernanke that could step down. do you think that's helping with the volatility? >> certainly. we're kind of shocked. almost like he got pushed off the door. it was an interview nobody expected. we didn't need it right now. >> and when you look at volatility, 8 straight days of swings of triple digits in

either direction, do you expect that to continue for a while? >> get used to it. it's going to stay that way, maybe worse. if you can't handle that volatility, you're only down 5%, take some off the table. >> he's going to have more tonight on "mad money" on cnbc. now what could be a significant breakthrough in a bitter fight on capitol hill. immigration reform is the focus again today as lawmakers inch toward a possible agreement in the senate. nbc's capitol hill correspondent, heldy o'donnell, has more for us. >> reporter: good morning. they worked late into the night write a new version of immigration reform with more border security. democrats want to get something passed with a dozen or more republicans, and that's the hard part. always a hot political issue, but now, immigration is pitting republican versus republican. one fight is over when and how undocumented immigrants, already

here, could gain legal status and eventual citizenship. >> it's an immediate amnesty and legalization and this attempt of enforcement after that. we need to fundamentally reverse that order. >> the facts are that 11 million people live in the shadows, and they live here and date back in amnesty, and by god they are being exploited every single day. >> another fight is over border security. a new senate proposal intended to win over more republican votes would build more border fence and deploy another 20,000 border agents. >> if you hire the border patrol agents and put them on a border they're not going to read a comic book. they're going to do their job. you don't need to prove to me they're going to do their job. you just need to get them on the border so they can do their job. >> people tell me they don't trust the federal government when it comes to securing our boarders. and why would they?

>> reporter: there is more work to do. backers of the plan say they will also tighten restraints on visas and electronics. all of this will be voted on next week. thank you. in brazil, massive protests against the government turned deadly. more than 1 million people took to the streets thursday and again overnight in demonstrations throughout the country. nbc's miguel almaguer was in the think of it in rio de janeiro. >> reporter: the protests turned violent. tear gas is being lobed into the air. protestors are running from corner to corner. >> one person was killed when a car hit a crowd of protestors. today president obama holds his first meeting with privacy and civil liberty's advocates following recent revelations about the government secret surveillance programs.

searching for evidence at the crime scene where 27-year-old odin lloyd's body was discovered. >> we learned that odin lloyd was shot multiple times and that he apparently died where he was found. >> reporter: this time, police swept the industrial park with metal detectors, less than a mile from aaron hernandez's home. >> are you being arrested? >> reporter: the patriot's star tight end has been unable to escape the grilling attention, an online rumor that he was about to be arrested which later proved to be wrong sparked a media chase. most of the players movements during the day were caught on camera. an hour long visit to the patriot's stadium in foxboro. a stop at a gas station where he refused to talk to reporters. >> why won't you tell us what happened? >> reporter: and finally a visit to a boston building where his law firm was located. relatives of the 27-year-old victim are anxious for the police to make an arrest. they believe there's a witness who has not come forward.

>> i need whoever it is to say something who knows what happened. he knows who it is. he knows who he was with and he needs to speak up. >> reporter: hernandez did meet with his lawyers in downtown boston. they said his car is actually still at the building but he is no longer there and there has been no activity at his home overnight, savannah. i'll take it stephanie, thank you very much. we have more on the tragic death of the the actor, james gandolfini and how he spent his final days. michelle, good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, matt. the autopsy just completed showed he died of a heart attack

of natural causes, and and spoke to a close friend that new of no drug or alcohol problems in the actor's recent past and seemed to be doing well. he couldn't tell us that gandolfini lead a healthy life style. he died shortly after being dinner with his son. he had spent his last day with his family. at 10:00 p.m. wednesday his 13-year-old son michael called reception saying he had found his dad collapsed in the bathroom. hotel staff say he was still breathing when they went upstairs to help. they performed cpr until paramedics arrived. and they continued to try to save his life on the way to the hospital. there doctors worked for 40 minutes massaging his heart but the man that made tony soprano a household name was pronounced dead on arrival. the victim of an apparent heart attack at age 51. >> the family is naturally totally surprised and grief struck, and this is something that nobody succumbing. >> reporter: and he was set to

at 7:26. we're following breaking news. we learned a major resource shift is about to get under way at the san jose police department in an attempt to reduce violent crime. among the things residents can expect, an additional 40 gang suppression officers on the streets every week effective immediately. by july that lumber be increase to a number of 64 officers on the streets every week. perhaps the most significant announcement, the san jose police department is about to create a new gang suppression unit focused on known gang areas. the department had a similar unit before but had to cut it as budget issues forced staff reductions over the past few years. berkeley's famous restaurant chez panisse will open its doors today almost four months after it caught fire.

anything other than she is not here. >> she has been on this show so many times. she's a friend of this show and consider her a friend and hope she would reconsider because she needs to address this. >> no question about it. >> this half hour, new developments at the murder trial of george zimmerman. opening statements scheduled to begin on monday now that an all female jury is chosen to decide his fate. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning savannah. this six member jury is all women. the prosecutor says five of those women are white and the prosecutor says the other juror is either hispanic or black. now the jurors names are concealed because this is an anonymous jury but they have revealed something about themselves already in court. >> and is this jury panel accessible to you, sir. >> yes, your honor. >> reporter: george zimmerman's fate will rest in the hand of six jurors.

he admits as he told police after the shooting that he shot and killed 17-year-old trayvon martin but zimmerman entered a not guilty plea arguing self-defense saying martin attacked him before zimmerman fired the fatal shot. during the jury selection the jurors said details about themselves. b-76 lived in central florida since 1975. a mother of two adult children. her passion is rescuing animals. jury b-37 also has two adult children. has been called four other times to sit on other jurors. never chosen until now. juror b-51 moved here nine years ago from atlanta. never been married. she is the only juror who is not a mother. juror e-6 is a married mother of two with an 11 and 13-year-old and active member of her church. juror e-40 is a mother of an adult child. she moved to central florida 7

months ago. and juror b-29, a mother of 8, she moved her recently from chicago. unlike the other women jurors who are white, juror b-29 is either hispanic or black. trayvon martin's family says they have faith in a fair justice system. >> the concept of equal justice under the law isn't a black value, it's not a white value, it's an american value. defense attorney mark o mara. >> one thing i'm certain about with juries is i'll never be able to tell what they are thinking. >> opening statements are scheduled for monday morning. that's when jurors will report back here to the courthouse and they won't be going home. they'll be sequestered until there's a verdict or the judge declares a mistrial. that could be longer than a month. all right. thank you. lisa bloom is today's legal analyst. good morning to you. >> good morning.

>> we see there's an all female jury selected. that's not something we see every day in courtrooms. >> obviously a highly intelligent juror, right? it is unusual. we also have a female judge in this case. a lot of social media activity about this topic but when you look at the research, women and men try cases the same way. women have more sympathy for victims. but the question is who is the victim. >> let's talk about the racial make up of the jury. five of the six jurors are white. will that make a difference? do you think there's a racial element to this case? >> in a case that's become a racial flashpoint for some people i'd like to see more minority representation. both side as kuzccused of strik for racial reasons. >> there would be nice to have more diversity in the jury so the community will accept whatever verdict is reached here? >> i think so but given this trial is televised people can watch for themselves and make

their own determination. >> we'll get a key ruling on a piece of evidence. prosecutors are trying to get in expert testimony about a 911 call in which screams can be heard. they want to have voice recognition experts say that voice belongs to trayvon martin. how important is this. >> it could be the most important evidence. one of these two men is screaming in the final moment before the shots ring out. if that's trayvon martin begging for his life it completely undercuts george zimmerman's story that he was being threatened and had to shoot to save his life. zimmerman says it was him screaming for help. whether or not this scientific testimony comes in the call gets played. >> and we may have trayvon martin's mother saying that's trayvon's voice on that tape. >> interesting trial to watch. thank you so much. now outside for a check of the weather with al. >> thank you savannah. i have to tell you, this hunter hayes attracts a lot of young ladies here. we have all of these young folks

we have an update on a touching story we brought you on thursday. the remarkable moment captured on camera when a child that was born deaf hears for the first time. here's nbc's kate snow. >> reporter: a child's look at wonder as he hears his father's words for the first time in his life. >> daddy loves you. daddy loves you. daddy loves you. >> yeah, hear. >> can you hear daddy? >> daddy loves you. >> at just 3 years old, grayson clamp is already a survivor braving open heart surgery as a one month old, a loss of vision in his left eye, unable to hear since birth. his adoptive parents tried everything but then they learned about a ground breaking clinical trial. in april he was the first child to have a device surgically implanted into the base of his brain stem.

all told, countless hours of work leading up to this incredible moment in may when the device was activated. >> when they turned that thing on and it worked. he responded to that sound it was like the weight was lifted off of me. >> reporter: for grayson and his parents nicole and len it's a victory but also just the first step. now able to hear he must begin the process of interrupting and forming words for himself. his parents look forward to the day he'll be able to speak with them and his best friend, younger brother ethan. >> it has opened up a whole new world to him. his brain is still having to get used to this new stimulus. he's never heard sound before, so he's learning what it is, what to do with it. >> while there's a lot for grayson to learn, there's one thing he already knows for certain. >> daddy loves you. >> reporter: for today, kate snow, nbc news, new york.

coming up high in the sky. we want to show you something quickly. nik wallenda is seated with his feet hanging over the edge of the grand canyon. that's how he relaxes. >> he is contemplating what he is going to do sunday here live which is walk this wire. it's the first of it's kind. never been done before and if you look at the dimensions of this wire, they have still yet to drape it that way. this is about 20 inches thick. willie is hanging on to it but if i put two bottle caps together, that's about the width of the wire right there hanging over 1500 feet above the ground. that's about the height of the empire state building and the length is about 1400 feet across. so about four football fields in leng. so it's going to take him about 20 or 22 minutes or so, so he says. >> and you can see the path from

here. so i'll start across. that's actually an island mesa. it sits by itself. he'll take a helicopter across when he is ready. he will begin from there and walk this way back to the land. it will take him about 20 minutes. you can see it dips in the middle. the most difficult part is in the beginning when you're walking downhill. if you can imagine doing that on a high wire but when he gets right here he will be running off this thing. this is the finish line for him. this is the home stretch. a very confident nik wallenda. coming up we'll talk more with him. he's going to let us try out our own test of skill and will here. >> not this. >> not this but we have this exact wire about 6 inches off the ground. >> and black brown? >> the special is live. is there a delay. >> no, willie was telling the joke -- >> oh, i'm sorry. i didn't hear it. >> no, you're right al. it is live, discovery channel,

it is 9:56, good morning, i'm marla tellez. police in three peninsula cities right now on the hunt this morning all looking for the same plan. police say this guy right here, 20-year-old melvin bell regard, is responsible for a string of burglaries that started back in

good morning and thanks for being wuss. i'm marla tellez. jon kelley has date off. we begin with new details about the san jose police department's new effort to fight gang violence it includes bringing back a gang suppression unit. nbc bay area's christie smith joins us live in san jose where officers just went into a detailed description about this crime fighting effort. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. san jose police say the recent gang-related death of a 16-year-old boy was just one more reason to go ahead and launch this gang crackdown. they say they have seen an increase in violence, a lot tied to two street gangs that have been around for decades and they have ties to the prison system.
