i'm terry mcsweeney. diane is off today. we're on an hour earlier than usual with a nhl game that's on at 5:00. the u.s. is asking hong kong to act quickly to extradite edward snowden. ian williams has more from hong kong. >> reporter: the hong kong authorities are being very tight-lipped today, refusing to comment on those charges or whether they've received any sort of requests from the u.s. the city's police commissioner would only say that any case

would proceed according to hong kong law and hong kong procedures. the first stage in that would be the receipt of a request from the u.s. at the justice department, which would also have to be looked at by hong kong's leader, the chief executive. then the police would be authorized if they determined there is a case, for snowden to be arrested. then of course they have to find out where he is. he's in hiding. but we don't know where. we assume he's in hong kong. then the legal process begins. he can claim asylum. throughout the process, there are multiple opportunities to challenge to appeal. and this could take a very long time. initially, of course, he will be looking closely at the charges made against him in the u.s. two of them under the espionage act would not have an equivalent crime here, which means they would not qualify under the extradition agreement between hong kong and the u.s., although

the third, stealing state property, theft of state property, probably would. either way, this is only the opening shot in what's likely to be a long and complicated process. ian williams, nbc news, hong kong. a pilot and stunt performer were killed at an air show in ohio today. an airplane slammed into the runway as it came in close to perform a loop. it exploded on impact. the pilot and stunt person were killed instantly. investigators rushed to help but there was nothing they could do. the show will go on tomorrow because they say it's an air show tradition. but they say they're devastated. >> it's important to make sure that everybody understands that the performers who do perform have a very strong bond and feel a strong need to continue the show and that's typical in the industry. >> the pilot's name has not yet been released. no word on what caused that

crash. the final legal hurdle before the start of the george zimmerman murder trial has been cleared this weekend. today the judge in the controversial case issued a ruling that involves key evidence in the trial which starts monday. jay gray has details now from sanford, florida. >> reporter: it is considered one of the most important and controversial pieces of evidence from the night former community watchman george zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old trayvon martin. >> you think he's yelling help? >> yes. >> what is your -- >> there's gunshots. >> reporter: martin's parents have said their son can be heard screaming for help in the background of the 911 call. zimmerman's father has countered, it's his son calling out during a confrontation that night. the last word in the role to call in the trial was issued by judge nelson this weekend. the call will be allowed to be entered into the case but judge nelson said the jury will not

hear from staid audio experts who suggested the voice on the tape may be martin's calling the science involved, quote, not reliable. >> the decision not to allow the prosecution's expert testimony about the 911 tape has struck a very serious blow to the prosecution. without that testimony, they have pieces of a puzzle, but they don't have clear answer. there could be a great deal of difficulty in overcoming reasonable doubt with respect to the self-defense claim of jrmgee zimmerman, zimmerman's pled not guilty. prosecutors have not talked about the judge's ruling but his attorney says that nelson made the right call. >> good science can be a very good benefit to a jury. but when it becomes junk science, as it would have been in this case, i'm very glad it was kept away from the jury. >> reporter: a jury that's scheduled to hear opening arguments in the case monday morning. jay gray, nbc news, sanford, florida. a teenager is in custody this afternoon after crashing a stolen car into two homes in

south san jose, sparking a fire that destroyed one of the homes and damaged the other. the accident happened about midnight near the corner of bluefield and vistapark drive. police say they spotted a car driving in the area without its headlights on. the driver sped off and crashed into one home, rupturing a gas line that started the fire that caused all this damage. one firefighter and one of the two juveniles in the car were treated for minor injuries. the other juvenile was released to a guardian and no one else was injured. today in san jose, police are kicking off a major crackdown against gang violence. the new plan comes days after a teenage boy was killed in a gang-related shooting. 40 additional san jose police officers focused on gang patrol. they're out on the streets. in a couple of weeks, 24 more officers will bed aed bringing the total to 64 officers focused on gangs. s.w.a.t. officers will be on duty during peak weekend hours as well. and by august, the department plans to reinstate its gang suppression unit. >> the reality right now is the

department needs to do something to get out into some of the hot-spot neighborhoods and prevent violent crime. >> our chief is doing the best he can with what he has. but certainly we know that shuffling the chairs on the titanic isn't going to keep san jose safer. >> the department also hopes to work on gang prevention by getting illegal guns off the streets. this has been one of the most violent years in recent san jose history. so far, there have been 25 homicides, eight of them gang-related. last year, 46 homicide was a 20-year high. a suspect is now in custody. he was arrested today for the murder of ezekiel taylor. he's been on the run since the april murder. he was arrested just after midnight in a parking lot in the 15000 block. police are working to see if he has the murder weapon. crews at the san francisco

waterfront removed a van that plunged in the bay with at least one person inside. the van drove into the water from the marina green about 5:00. police arrived to find the vehicle partially submerged. people in a boat tried to rescue the people in the van. dive teams searched for hours last night. one body was inside. but they had to stop recovery efforts until this morning. >> obviously it was an ordeal that lasted over 24 hours. most people think it's easy to track the vehicle from this deep in water. it's not, as you can see. we had to get a lot of people on board to do it. the fire department, independent contractor and the sfpd. >> police are trying to confirm the identity of the victim and are looking for witnesses who can help them find out why that van ended up in the water. southwest airlines planes are back in the air today after they were grounded for several hours last night. a systemwide computer glitch wouldn't allow passengers to check in and airline staff

couldn't print boarding passes or monitor the weight of the planes. we spoke with passengers this afternoon. >> i came to san jose airport this morning to take my two sons and my wife, they were flying to texas. when we got here, our flight had been canceled. i guess we'll have to do this whole thing over again. which is a bit of a hassle traveling with two little kids. >> by 11:00 last night, a back-up system allowed flights to take off once again. the airline says at least a dozen more flights were canceled nationwide this morning. the first weekend of summer is off to a hot start. it's been one of the driest years on record here in the bay area. but now how about some rain? anthony slaughter is here with what's in store? >> hard to believe we're talking about the first full weekend of summer and now we're talking about showers. no rain all year long, not enough to give some of those

firefighters some relief on some of those wildfires. the hottest locations were in the low 90s. gilroy at 92. santa rosa at 91. it was a hot day. temperatures running warm in the 60s and 70s along the peninsula. down in the inland valleys, temperatures still very warm, close to 90 degrees all because the winds are beginning to shift now and beginning to pick up. that's what's headed our way. our next storm system is going to bring a new showers as we head into the picture towards monday. some of these showers may actually start to arrive as early as sunday night in the north bay and up against the coast. this is what we're looking at. north bay, you'll be the first to see the showers tomorrow night and along the coast. down towards san francisco. the peninsula, showers will spread through the peninsula in the north bay by monday and tuesday. looks like we'll see the south bay and the east bay have the better chance for showers there. looks like we're going to see a widespread rain event. more on the timing and how much rain we may actually pick up from this. see you in a bit.

in just a matter of days we will know the u.s. supreme court's decision on prop 8, california's ban on same-sex marriage. the high court has at least two more decision days, monday and thursday. nbc bay area's cheryl hurd finds the public debate and the emotions continue. >> for us in california, couples will be marrying again. >> reporter: kate kendall is a lesbian, married and a mother of

two children. she says waiting for the supreme court decision on prop 8 and the federal defense of marriage act has been grueling. >> this whole thing started in 2004, which is nine years ago. a lot happens in someone's life in nine years. >> reporter: for one, kendall's daughter grew up. she was 2 when then mayor gavin newsom allowed couples to marry. in 2008, same-sex couples were allowed to marry for a short time. now gay marriage is in the hands of the supreme court after a very long legal fight. >> i do wish the courts would get on with it. >> her entire life has been dominated in our household by prop 8. >> reporter: california voters approved prop 8 which says marriage is between a man and a woman. >> i don't think it should have gone this far at all. >> reporter: for people like art lopez who believes in traditional marriage, waiting for the supreme court decision

does not sway his opinion. >> i have a difficult time adjusting to so many others that have seemed to accept the direction we're going. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. thousands of political leaders and activists are in the bay area this area. it featured nationally elected officials such as house minority leader nancy pelosi, representative mike honda and darryl steinberg. among the topics, guns, immigration and marriage equality. the supreme court is expected a issue a ruling this week on the same-sex marriage ban. >> i think the likeliest outcome on prop 8 is we're going to win one way or another on prop 8 from this supreme court. i think we may hear on monday. that's pretty likely. if not monday, by the end of the

week. and we'll very soon have marriage again for every loving couple who wants access to it in california. >> this is the first time in the group's eight-year history that it's holding an event in california. we have extensive coverage of the pending decisions by the supreme court regarding gay marriage. cheryl hurd will report from washington, d.c. monday morning and we'll have reports from across the bay area when the ruling comes down. still to come, how a new classification for obesity could change the way some people deal with their medical insurance and their doctors.

the american medical association is now classifying obesity as a disease. that could be major changes in the way doctors and insurance companies treat obese patients. marianne favro takes a look at the potential impact. >> reporter: if you're obese, you have a disease. that's the new designation by the american medical association. this doctor, director of the weight loss management program

at kaiser san jose is thrilled by the move. >> so it really will help remove some of the stigma that is associated with obesity. and obesity is not just a cosmetic problem. it is a serious medical problem. it's a chronic disease. >> reporter: she also says it may change what your insurance company is willing to pay for. according to the american medical association, more widespread recognition of obesity as a disease may one day lead to your employer covering the costs of weight loss programs or obesity treatments. doctors already measure patient's body mass index and consider it an important vital same. the doctor hopes the ama's decision will encourage more doctors to tackle weight management, which may help prevent our diseases. >> in the past, fat cells were thought to be just storage for energy. but now we know with research that they produce nearly 100 chemicals and 98 of them are

bad. they cause inflammation in joints, causing arthritis. they raise blood pressure. they cause insulin resistance. >> reporter: the ama says the downside is obese patients may expect they should be able to take a pill to cure them. but the benefit is more research may now be done to help fight obesity, an important battle, because the centers for disease control predicts in just 17 years, 42% of all americans will be obese. in san jose, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. anthony slaughter joins us now. we have a super moon coming up in a few hours and a big change coming in the forecast. >> we do have a big change. huge change coming to our forecast. we haven't been able to talk about this all year long. we're talking about rain. as we start off the workweek, keep the umbrellas handy. temperatures very warm. 91 in santa rosa. that cool ocean breeze starting to affect san francisco, down to 67. in the east bay and the south bay, plenty of 70s and 80s right now. major cooling is headed our way.

beginning tomorrow, temperatures will fall some 15 degrees. santa rosa, back to 74 for tomorrow. livermore back in the 70s as well. even oakland and san francisco back from the 70s today, back into the 60s tomorrow. we are expecting a little bit of fog. if you're trying to get out to see the super moon, that will be out early tonight, you may actually get to see it. but fog is heading our way. definitely want to make sure you do it tonight. talking about how dry it's been across the bay area. the rainfall deficit, very huge. 2 to 3 inches since january. and that puts us behind for the whole water year. some so to 15 inches. but places like napa -- last time we saw decent amount of rain was april 4th. monday and tuesday, the early estimates bring the higher amounts back to .5 inches. summer just started a couple of days ago. starting off the day tomorrow,

right around 6:00 tomorrow, a little bit of fog, little bit of cloud cover. but there will be a few breaks in the clouds to start the day tomorrow. not going to be raining when you wake up. towards noon, the north bay will start to see a few areas of drizzle and fog from point reyes over to santa rosa. through the day tomorrow, a little bit of rain starts to affect the coast. san francisco down to half moon bay even over into the east bay, we could see showers tomorrow night. once monday hits, make sure you have the umbrella. rain from 580 points northward. if you live in livermore, oakland, concord, expect the showers to wake up on monday. but tomorrow when you wake up, not going to be dealing with any rain showers. even for tuesday, this system sticks around, at least for two days. and we're talking about the potential for maybe even half an inch in some locations like santa rosa, napa. the computer modeling backing off from this run. but places like san jose, livermore, maybe .10 inches over toward livermore. this would be some of the most rain, as little as it is, that

we've seen all year long. we definitely need it, especially with all the wildfires that have been breaking out across the area. to start the day tomorrow, temperatures mild, back into the 50s. start to cloud over about 5:00, 6:00 in the morning. the clouds will be with us tomorrow. it will be cool. definitely want to grab the jackets. 71 in oakland. 78 in livermore. almaden valley at 76. i wanted to highlight this green area along the coast. we expect to see the showers here towards the afternoon hours up against the immediate coastline tomorrow afternoon and the evening. chance of showers better for everybody by monday and tuesday. look what happens, talking about the summer heat. the kind of stuff we like here across the bay, beach time, pool time. anything you want to do. get back outdoors and enjoy the lovely weather. towards thursday and friday, talking about lower 90s once again. kind of like what we had for today. it's a rainy ride and we need

of goes out the window in this match-up. miami won nine straight at at&t park heading into a saturday matinee. to the ballpark we go, barry zito making his first start since the passing of his father, joe, on wednesday. he pitched very well. this was his one mistake. ed lucas jumps on the curveball and hits it out for his first career home run. marlins with a 1-0 lead. bottom five, same score, juan perez is on third. zito trying the safety squeeze. but a great play by jacob turner, the pitcher, to get perez at the plate. next batter is gregor blanco. he hits it hard and a fan thinks he got a souvenir. interferes with the baseball. this is umpire's discretion and they give zito home plate on the ground-rule double. it's aed is 1 game. that's where we stand, bottom 11 at at&t park. they are still playing ball. the news on angel pagan is not good.

an mri shows he has a small tear in his right hamstring. pagan will get a second opinion but surgery remains a distinct possibility. and if he goes under the knife, he'll be out of action for at least six to eight weeks. >> we never look at surgery as a best option until we get all the information we can get from doctors and then make the call. but it's frustrating when you do rehab and you're feeling great and then you reaggravate it, obviously you're going to say, well, surgery -- you're probably better off. but i can't say that right now. >> colin kaepernick got a chance to show off his cannon last night throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at at&t. the 49er quarterback by drafted by the cubs in the 43rd round of the 2009 mlb draft. we get up close and personal courtesy of the 49er official twitter account. check this out.
