good evening, i'm terry mcsweeny, diane is off this evening. we're on a special time tonight because of the stanley cup finals and we begin with developing news in the south bay, san jose firefighters working quickly to get the upper hand on two fast moving grassfires near east capitol and tuers road, kimberly tere hasn't details. >> reporter: east capitol expressway just reopened about 20 minutes ago and you can see crews are on either side of the street. this is where it jumped east capitol expressway and it scorched off six, ten acres by the time it was contained.

the fires were sparked at 4:30 this afternoon, two were burning at the same time and the wind made it difficult for firefighters out here. 15 to 20 trucks responded and cal fire was called in to help. neighbors came out to watch the firefighters work and we did see a man doing some of his own work out here this afternoon watering the dry grass that came right up to his home, he was concerned the fire might head in that direction. those that were here in the afternoon said they heard explosions right before the fire started. >> i heard little explosions, i figured, i better water this down. if it gets close, at least it will slow it down. >> there were several explosions, and we think it started near the homeless encampment and we heard offgassing propane tanks and several large explosions. >> we got this video that was captured by richard hurtado that

lives in the area and he said the flames got too close for him and he hightailed it out of the area. there have been already been three grassfires in this area this year. as for today's fire, the crews expect to be out here three to four hours yet this evening. they want to make sure the hot spots are taken care of since it's hot, dry and windy and anything overlooked could spark another fire. >> thanks very much. game five of the stanley cup finals wrapped up a few minutes a go on nbc bay area. it was also a big day in local sports as well as the giants finally broke through against the miami marlins, let's get to henry with more on that. >> big sports day on the nbc family of networks, the blackhawks defeated the bruins to move up three games to two in

the stanley cup finals. but barry zito started saturday making the first appearance since the death of his father joe on wednesday. he would be a factor, and take a look at the highlights from at&t park. giants down 1-0 in the fifth. man on first scored blanco and he drives one deep to right center and it takes a high bounce and is caught by a fan. barry zito awarded home, game tied at one. we go to extras. top of the 11th, still tied at one, two on, two out and polanco to right and hunter pence makes a run-saving catch and bottom the giants looking to capitalize in a big way, bases loaded for hector sanchez, hits a pop-up down the left field line and it's hauled in. blanco comes in to score, giants win 2-1 and we've got the wrap from china basin.

>> the giants are now 6-5 in extra inning games. today's win could not have come at a better time. the injury-laden team has lost to the marlins here at at&t park nine consecutive times. barry zito given a task to snap that streak in the after math of his father's recent passing, the lefty came up big giving his team seven innings of one-run ball. >> i just tried to minimize distractions. taking the mound regardless of what it is and, you know, some things are a little heavier than others but today i was able to get out there and stay focused and, you know, give the team a chance to win. >> obviously baseball is extremely important but there's perspective and for him to come out and pitch the way he did and be there for us, we're a family, too, playing as a team and, you know, we're all here for him and he went out and pitched outstanding and it was amazing. >> it was a family member especially a parent, i can't imagine what he was going

well, that will do it for now, but don't forget we got a lot more coming up in sports with an update on pablo sandoval tonight at 11:00, he's got a rehab assignment going on and we'll have highlights from the a's and mariners game and the a's are trailing 2-0. police spent hours gathering evidence at the home of aaron hernandez and the team of investigators and police dogs searched the house and grounds. this is the second time they've searched. hernandez has been questioned in connection with the death of a semipro football player. the body of oden lloyd was found monday a mile from hernandez's house and he's not been arrested for the killing but he's lost an endorsement deal with a bay area company. a teenager is in cud after stealing a car. the accident happened at midnight on the corner of

bluefield and vistapark drive. they spotted a car driving in the area without headlights. the driver sped off and crashed into one home rupturing a gas line that started the fire that caused all the damage. one firefighter and one of the two juveniles in the car weret introduced for minor injuries and the other juvenile was released to a guardian. crews at marina green removed a body containing a body from the bay. it drove into the water at 5:00 friday, and boaters tried to rescue the person still inside but could not. the van went under water. tides moved it and dive teams couldn't find it but rescuers did locate it and confirmed one body inside but recovery efforts were halted by darkness. >> it's an ordeal that lasts over 24 hours. most people think it's easy to extract a vehicle from this deep in the water, it's not as you can see. we had to get a lot of people on board to do it, the fire

tragedy at an ohio air show today and thousands of people saw it. a biplane carrying a wing walker slammed into the dayton airport runway as it came in low to perform a loop. the plane exploded on impact and burst into flames. the pilot and stunt walker jane wicker were killed instantly. investigators say they rushed to help but there was nothing they could do. the rest of today's show was canceled, however, the show will go on tomorrow. the organizers say it's an air show tradition but they say they are devastated. >> it's important to make sure that everybody understands that the performers who do perform have a very strong bond and feel a strong need to continue the show and that's typical in the industry. >> the air show announcers said the plane was going about 110 miles per hour shortly before the crash. no word on what caused the plane to go down. the hunt for eric snowden has taken on greater urgency tonight now that the u.s. has

charged the former nsa contractor espionagespionage. he's been in hiding in hong kong this as more potentially damaging leaks from snowden go public. white house correspondent kristen welker reports. >> reporter: edward snowden who admitted to leaking classified documents about the united states phone and internet surveillance program is now facing criminal charges. >> i say he's a traitor and a defector. >> reporter: the complaint accuses snowden of violating federal espionage laws by sharing classified documents to people who were not cleared to receive them. he's also charged with stealing government property. today lawmakers in both parties backed the move to bring him to justice. >> here's a man who detrade his country. this will get the extradition process started and hopefully hong kong will be agreeable. >> under the current laws and i won't be the judge in the case nor will i be the jury, but under current laws, it looks dismal. >> reporter: but gleen greenwald

it's a movie so big it brock the new york stock exchange to emeryville, a lot of buzz surrounding pixar's new movie "monsters university" which was released yesterday and it's full of technology made right here in the bay area. our business and tech reporter scott budman recently spent the day at pixar headquarters to show us the celebration. >> reporter: call it a perk for making popular movies but pixar got to ring the closing bill for the new york stock exchange at its bay area headquarters. part of a big day for the company. which also released "monsters university" a prequel to "monsters, inc., here at pixar headquarters employees feel a sense of pride perhaps none more than dan scanlon who directed the film. >> i see their faces on the screen when i watch the movie. i see the people that lived the shot and animated the shot and came up with the idea and

stories. in emeryville, scott budman, nbc bay area news. the biggest and brightest full moon of the year will be above us tonight and into tomorrow morning. the super moon will appear 14% larger than normal early tomorrow morning. this phenomenon occurs when the moon passes closer to earth than usual. in this case it will travel within 222,000 mile offered. sound far away? it's actually close. experts say the best time to view it at 4:30 tomorrow morning if you're up then. anthony slaughter will you be up then? and if you are up then, will the skies be clear? >> we won't actually have clear skies then, you might want to get out before midnight tonight because clouds are on the horizon making their way through, 4:30 or 5:00 tomorrow morning, mostly cloudy skies so you actually want to try to get out before midnight and you can see the super moon, and it will be the brightest because it's the closest in its orbit and the

next time it will happen is aug of next year. get out and enjoy it at least before midnight. off the coast is the next storm system, the cold front will arrive tomorrow morning and bringing in the clouds and fog at least at the coast. tomorrow will be a dry day when you wake up but by the afternoon and evening hours fog and drizzle will be on the horizon especially at the coast. not only that, but a temperature drop is headed our way, today, santa rosa up to 91 degrees and 74 tomorrow, and oakland got up to 79 and back into the 60s tomorrow. a major temperature drop for us tomorrow. we can already see the ramifications of the cool wind, 61 in san francisco after being up 73 earlier today. 81 right now in sunnyvale, 69 in san jose, the cooling wind has made its way all the way down to the south bay and still mild in concord at 77 degrees. put this into motion and you'll notice the precip-cast, you'll notice widespread cloud cover especially at the coast and you'll see some peeks of sun as

we start the day off to the east and south bay, but in the afternoon hours showers develop especially across the north bay and that's where we'll see the better chance for showers tomorrow. tomorrow evening really widespread drizzle at the coast from half mon bay up to san francisco and even potential for light showers, but monday is the day when everybody will be looking for showers especially once we start the day, from the north bay and the east bay and even down the south bay. we'll be looking at widespread shower activity. it won't be a whole lot of rain but every little bit counts because we're talking about the driest season on rrd. the places with the most rain will be in the north bay and up to the peninsula where we could see a tenth of an inch or maybe even a half an inch depending on how heavy the rain will be. tomorrow we'll be dry and in the afternoon hours we'll see the cloud cover and drizzle starting to take place. only 63 in san francisco tomorrow. 74 in san jose. 78 in livermore for tomorrow
