it is almost 4:31. happy to have you along. i'm jon kelley. >> good morning. happy monday if there is such a thing. i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. rain in the craft. christina loren, you were dead-on on the forecast. >> you can typically set it on auto pilot in the state of california. this morning we're tracking showers as you can see, quite a bit of rainfall. for the most part, it's the north bay having activity. as we head through the rest of the day into the evening hours, a lot of rain headed our way. two potent systems as you head through today and tomorrow. as you can see, areas to the south of san francisco mostly dry. we had rain overnight. so you want to give yourself extra time this morning.

good idea, right? >> yes. when there are inclement weather situations, be careful. we're looking to to the south bay. dry roads throughout most of the south bay as far as the chp report is going anyway. you're at the speed limit even through these construction zones. be careful at 880 and 280. one to be concerned with is 237 eastbound getting on to southbound 680. that connector still closed and might be closed for another half hour as they start to move the crews over the next 15 to 20 minutes. you'll move back around the northbound side as you need to get through the area. more construction and changes in the next few minutes. back to you. >> mike, we look forward to that. 4:32. breaking news we are following in sunnyvale where firefighters are busy overnight dealing with a fire at a mobile home park on el camino real just west of

lawrence expressway. initial reports are a mobile home caught on fire. power lines may be in danger. "today in the bay's" bob redell is on his way and will have a live update very soon. hours from now the supreme court couldish yub a major ruling on proposition 8. the court expected to announce decisions in key cases and one of them could be california's ban on same-sex marriage. the court has until the end of the month to issue rulings. today is the final day on their calendar, however, another session could be scheduled for wednesday or thursday. there are a number of ways the court could rule on this one. it could uphold prop 8 or strike it down. in that instance, the ruling could be directed to california alone, the only states that already allow same-sex marriage or all 50 states. they can also rule the supporters of problem 8 don't have the legal standing to

defend the law. we'll have live coverage starting at 5:00 a.m. as soon as that prop 8 ruling does come down, the today will bring to it you live and we'll have live coverage for you in the bay area and in washington, d.c. throughout the morning and during our 11:00 broadcast. for continuing coverage, visit our website, nbcbayarea.com, just search prop 8. happening now, we are keeping an eye on south africa where former president nelson mandela's health is getting worse. this is new video this morning of the hospital in pretoria where mandela is being cared for. the 94-year-old's condition became critical in just the past 24 hours. mandela has been in the hospital for more than two weeks with a recurring lung infection. the man who says he leaked the information about the nsa's spying program is on the move, but it's not clear where he is. just moments ago we learned a cuba-bound flight has left for

moscow, but edward snowden has not been seen on board. an nbc producer on this flight could not see snowden in the seat he booked or anywhere else in the plane for that matter. earlier snowden registered for the flight using his u.s. passport which american officials say has been revoked. the nsa whistle-blower arrived yesterday from hong kong where he had been hiding for several weeks to evade u.s. justice. he's seeking asylum in ecuador. it's not clear if the country will grant him that privilege. a south bay couple was attacked in broad daylight by a group of suspected gang members. police say the couple was walking on lido street near king and story roads yesterday afternoon when they were confronted. >> an argument ensued and they ultimately took the victim's purse from her, when the male tried to intervene they assaulted him and he suffered a head injury. both the male and female were

transported to the hospital. >> after the attack suspects took off. police don't have an update on the couple's condition yet this morning. the attack coming on the very first weekend san jose police rolled out a three-phase plan to try to crack down on gang violence. the plan includes more patrols in june and july and a gang suppression unit will be formed this august. 4:36. sentencing is scheduled for a sonoma county man con viced of setting foo five sect wildfires. he pleaded no contest in connection with four fives in sonoma county and one in san mateo county. the fires were set between july of 2011 and june of 2012. the central coast went dark for several hours overnight after a widespread power outage affecting more than 145,000 customers. that outage happening around

9:30 last night stretching from the beach town of came brie yeah and san louieu luis business obisbo. pg&e says the equipment failure at a substation caused that outage. power was resdoerd about 2:00 this morning. san francisco's top environmental health official is under investigation for conflict of interest. dr. raj eem badiaf is placed on administrative leave. city hall sources say batia serves on boards of a couple of non-profits, including one that has worked with his division of the public health department. he says he was not aware he was doing anything wrong. chez panisse will officially reopen its doors to the public

we stop the clock on your radar. we can see from santa rosa down south to richmond, even south san francisco. light rain showers this morning. i take you to the south bay, nice and dry for the time being. all this will slide to the south very slowly as you head through the next few hours. we'll be tracking those showers all morning long. make sure you're ready for wet weather. because of the mild start, it will be mild out there this afternoon. we'll still hit the 70s. 60 in san francisco today. so you want to keep in mind it's slick out there. the good news is you do have to compete with all the school buses and the parents trying to get their kids to school this time. good morning, mike. >> it's the frenetic rush to get to summer camp or day came. that's closer to 8:00 or 9:00. we're looking southbound with the taillights. this is in san rafael. rain and drizzle.

all the roads are looking just fine as far as this area. our road weather index. fortunately the traffic and weather systems are tied together. we see spots of it throughout the north bay. north of know have had dough, as well as here in the east bay we have rain south of that venetia bridge. highway 4 coming out of pittsburgh and into concord. also looking at the antioch area. just a tiny blip there. we're starting the see a few cars hit the roadway. that's the first place we see the commute kick in. in fremont, a live look 880 southbound in tesla and heading into milpitas, still have the construction blocking 237 eastbound on to south 680. in just a few minutes new car pool lanes officially open for south bay commuters this

morning. at 5:00, new hov lane restrictions go in effect for 880 between 101 and san jose and 237 in milpitas. the $70 million project also added a car pool lane to the southbound on-ramp from brokaw. next week san jose engineers will start retiming the traffic signals on brokaw where the morning backups have been snarled during the project. a big announcement expected for the bay area's kraft fight hunger bowl. the big ten expected to announce it will be affiliated with the bowl starting in 2014. that means each and every year a big ten team will play a pac 12 team in that game. right now it's held at at&t park but it will be moving down to the big brand new 49ers stadium starting in 2014. 4:41. your morning cup of joe is about to cost you a little more. the big change coming to starbucks next. >> hopefully that means the quality improves as well. the latest on the faa's plan

a big-time rebound. bertha coombs back by popular demand, live at cnbc headquarters with all the latest details. good to see you, bertha. >> good to see you, jon. those looking for a rebound aren't likely to get it. the futures are pointing the a lower start by as much as 140 points on the dow. the markets are coming off their worst week since mid april. investors are very concerned about the fed easing back on its stimulus program and what kind of effect that's going to have, not to mention weak economic data out of china, weak performance from the chinese markets overnight as well. this week we'll get data on durable goods, housing and personal income. the dow did manage to rebound on friday after two days of losses closing up 41 points to 14,779, the nasdaq slipping eight to 3,337. the dow poised to open about 140

points to the downside. facebook says it inadvertently exposed personal information of 6 million members in the past year. they blamed the data breach on a glitch on its archive of contact information from its 1.1 billion users. facebook says it has fixed that bug and there's no evidence any information was used maliciously. while the breach was limited, facebook says it's embarrassed by the error. starbucks is raising prices on some drinks by as much as ten cents starting tomorrow. the coffee chain says less than a third of the beverages will be affected by the change. the company says in some markets customers won't see any change at all when it comes to the cost of brewed coffee. commodity costs make up less than 4%. not sure what's behind the price increase. you know, jon, just got to have

closely, from santa rosa down south through novato. give yourself extra time, travel cautiously out there. we haven't had any rain since april. so what i can tell you is it's going to be really slick. you have all the oil out there that's been accumulating on the roads. you get that rain after that a very dangerous situation. mike will tell you more about that. that's what happens when it rains after it hasn't for some time, it tends to loosen up the oil. we're expecting showers to move into the south bay. we stop the clock again. we'll see a mostly dry day. once the first wave of moisture moves through, we'll get on and off light activity up till 10:00 p.m. tonight. impacting the north bay, you can see the yellow and orange embedded within the green. the north bay could pick up a half inch to an inch before all is said and done. we'll have showers in the forecast for tomorrow as well. keep the umbrella with you. high also be comfortable. we're starting out so mild. in the mid 60s. san jose easily hitting 73

today in the trial of george zimmerman, the neighborhood watch degree pleading not guilty in the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin. a judge has ruled prosecution experts will not be allowed to testify regarding a key 911 call placed the night trayvon martin was killed. the judge will allow the 911 call to be played in court. zimmerman says he acted in self-defense and if convicted on all charges, zimmerman could spend the rest of his life in prison. the senate will hold a key vote today on its immigration reform bill. senators will vote on the border surge apartment. it would double the number of border patrol agents to 40,000 and guarantee the completion of the 700-mile long fence along america's southern border. 60 votes are required for the amendment to pass. 4:51 right now. how about this, brad pitt and the man of steel not a match. not a chance for a movie match made here in the bay area. we'll tell you about the big
