june 25th. this is "today in the bay." the good news is, it is now officially 4:31, so our tuesday is moving along. thanks for joining us, i'm jon kelley. >> good morning. i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. we'll talk about june gloom and rain hitting most of the bay area. meteorologist christina loren is tracking the storm. good morning to you. >> good morning, marla and jon. let's take it right to the radar this morning. a lot of people not expecting the showers especially after yesterday, you figure, hey, maybe one day of rain late june. we'll go with three consecutive days of rain as we head through tomorrow morning. we'll keep the showers in the forecast. what i can tell you is the heaviest rain will come through right in the heart of your morning drive. be watching the showers as they develop and intensify throughout the morning. right now everything is spotty and light, but there is heavier rainfall on the way. we'll sort that out for you and

tell you when the worst part of the system will hit your house. let's check your drive with mike. >> good morning. yesterday, as christina warned you, there was going to be rain and there was. there's a sign over off to the right at the san mateo bridge warning about slick conditions on the span itself. that sign has been turned off, but we're still giving you that warning. you saw christina's radar and the live shot of the golden gate bridge. watch the on and off-ramps. no big deals as far as the castro valley y or the san mateo bridge. san mateo and dumbarton bridge moving smoothly. a nice easy drive right now. we have road crews out there. i'll point out a couple spots for slowing coming up. hours from now the supreme court could issue a major ruling on california's proposition 8. the court has decisions in six more cases to announce before this session is over, and california's ban on same-sex marriage could be next. so far shear the deal. the court has released decisions

in the order of when each case was heard. if that holds true, proposition 8 would be the very next item on the list today's rulings will be released at 7:00 this morning. when the decision comes down, san francisco's castro district is going to be ready t. banners and the balloons are in place, also the barricades are ready to shut down castro street. volunteers with the castro community on patrol say with each passing day the gathering is expected to get bigger because people are also arriving for the pride celebrations. >> more and more out-of-towners are coming to san francisco. that means the size of the crowd for the day of the decision is going to be two or three times what it would have been when it would have been just local people. >> restaurant owners getting ready. doing as much prep work as possible so they're ready pour the decision day dinner rush. as soon as the ruling comes down, nbc news will break in with a special report. we'll also bring you live coverage both here in the bay area and in washington, d.c. throughout the morning and during our 11:00 a.m. broadcast.

for continuing coverage you can also visit our website, nbcbayarea.com. just search prop 8. new this morning, a father wanted in antioch for allegedly kidnapping his very own daughter turned himself in. the kidnapping prompting antioch police to issue an amber alert yesterday. investigators say 23-year-old joshua benton, broke into a home, started a fight with the child's mother and kid nald his 11-month-old daughter. benton left the baby behind when police eventually spotted him nearby. after several hours he also turned him secself in to police. that girl was not hurt and is now back with her mother. two men accused of killing a 3-year-old oakland boy will be in court. the preliminary hearing for lawrence denard and willy torrence starts this morning. the men opened fire in an east oakland anybody hood hitting and killing 3-year-old carlos nava with a stray bullet.

the city of sunnyvale wants new changes in gun laws. it's not waiting on congress to act. the city council considering a possible ballot measure that would tighten restrictions on guns and ammunition in the city. some of the new rules could include requiring private gun sellers to conduct background checks on buyers and requiring shops to report to law enforcement when anyone purchases more than 500 rounds at a time. the issue will be discussed tonight at the sunnyvale city hall. 4:35. in just a matter of hours, b.a.r.t. workers will start voting on whether or not to authorize a strike. the union contract expires on sunday. it looks like the two sides are far away from reaching a deal. yesterday two of the biggest unions filed a lawsuit against b.a.r.t. accusing the board of directors of unfair labor practices and not negotiating a new contract in good faith. b.a.r.t. officials deny these accusations saying it's a smoke screen to cover up workers demanding a 23% wage hike.

early action today in the south bay getting ready for what's expected to be an especially dangerous fire season. this morning emergency responders from all across santa clara county set to begin three days of wildfire training at sanborn county park near los gatos. it gives volunteers and other emergency crews the chance to practice working together in simulated emergency scenarios. we called this morning to see if the wet weather will affect the training. county fire then referred us to the battalion chief who has not yet returned our call. you can call it a perfect storm at sfo today. the airport is expecting major delays, not only from the weather but also from construction. one of the runways at sfo is shut down this morning for required upgrades. it won't reopen until tomorrow night. and with rain in the forecast, travelers are preparing themselves for delays. more than 115 flights were canceled altogether at sfo yesterday. many more were delayed because of the weather.

it's 4:36 right now. speaking of the weather, just days now into summer and christina loren has been telling us all about this wet weather and it is here. >> it is here. it's kind of refreshing out there. good tuesday morning, jon and marla. good morning to you at home. it's actually a very welcome change. wait till i show you your seven-day outlook. it's not looking good if i don't don't like the heat. 63 in san jose to start. starting nice and mild. it feels almost tropical ought there this morning. this is what we're tracking in terms of showers right now. nothing is very organized. we're starting the see a little bit more organization at this point, though, a little cell moving onshore near half moon bay. that's about it. so far everything has been very scattered and light so far as we head throughout the next couple hours, the showers will become more steady and widespread. we want to make sure you're ready for that, especially if you're taking the kids to summer camp this morning or you, yourself have to go out and drive through the showers to get to work, give yourself the time.

it's been light out there. >> we've had a lighter volume overall. the commute will be affected, especially as we get toward the 7:30, 8:30 hour. that's when we've seen it compacted over the last couple weeks. that's typical for summer. looking over toward 880, a nice easy drive. look at the glowing lights. the water kicking up off the roadways through this area where there is an event tonight. this morning the event is the rain and we're looking at construction crew which are still scheduled in the area. they're clearing soon. not a big deal. there is a crew on the upper deck as you head up the incline past the can't lever section. we get a live look at the eastshore freeway as well as we look again at the glowing lights. this is westbound 80 blurring here on the lens. we do see there's a shadow of university avenue over crossing. travel is nice. even at this hour, it is still that crowded over there,

westbound 80 through berkeley. >> instead of blur, i see more artistic. >> okay. crews ready to break ground on a brand new construction project in the south bay. that's a project putting up hundreds of high-rise apartments in downtown san jose. the new 1 south market will have 312 units. this is located at the corner of market and santa clara streets right at the heart of downtown. a palo alto investment group spearheading this project. today's groundbreaking ceremony starting this morning at 10:00 a.m. sharp. one of apple's original creations goes on display in the south bay, talking about the apple 1 computer. the guess is there's less than two dozen left in the world. this one was signed by apple co-founder steve wozniak. you can check it out at the computer history museum starting today through thursday. after that the computer goes up for auction.

the last time one went to auction, it pulled in more than $600,000. this one is expected to fetch about half million. >> when you think about where we are today with electronics and gadgets and everything, that's mind blowing to think it started on a big piece of wood. >> the apple one verses the ipad. >> strong. 4:40 right now. all caught on camera. we'll show you some road rage on a southern california freeway that has gone viral here. we'll let you know what the driver of the other car is now saying. the international search for edward snowden continues this morning. who is now helping the whistle-blower in his search for asylum next. plus an american executive held hostage by his own workers. it's true out there. what he's saying after five days in captivity.

rise and shine everybody. a live look at the bay bridge here. looks like there's some rain coming down there, a little misty at the very least. we're checking the forecast with christina. mike has a look at the roads still ahead. it's 4:43. south korea is issuing a cyber attack alert, 63 years since the korean war began. the country says tens of thousands of computers have been hacked including ones at banks and south korean broadcasters.

a similar attack in march was blamed on north korea. north korea says several websites have been shut down including one belonging to a major airline and a popular newspaper. the north is not say fg the sites were hacked. over in beijing, an unusual story, an american executivin e entering day five. he says he's being held hostage by angry workers at the factory that makes products for his company specialty medical supplies based in florida. workers now demanding generous severance packages amid rumors that factory is shutting down. starns says he's trying to keep it cool, waiting for his lawyers to arrive to hopefully free him and resolve the dispute. the battle over fremont-based men's warehouse is not over. knew rumors this morning that founder george zimmer won't go down without a five. bertha coombs is live at cnbc headquarters. good morning, bertha.

>> reporter: good morning, marla. founders never go away quietly. the futures this morning, though, are pointing higher. looks like we'll get a bit of a bounce back after stocks fell on monday on continuing concern that the fed pulling back from its bond-buying program and worries about china's economy slowing an issues with the banking system there. china's central bank this morning making comments to try to calm investors saying that things are all right. here in the u.s. we'll get data on demand for durable goods, home prices, new home sales and consumer confidence later this morning. the dow dropping 140 points monday to close at 14,660, the nasdaq plunging 36 to 3,321. that's right, men's warehouse founder george zimmer barely out the door, but could already be plotting his come back. he was ousted last week and officially resigned on monday is reportedly exploring his options. those could include teaming up

organized. more steady rainfall as we head through the next couple hours. we're starting to see that already from montero to half moon bay. here is where we're headed as we get into the 6:00 hour. heavier pockets of rain start to develop in the north bay. starting to see action in the south bay. not a lot of action. we will start to get some between 9:00 and 11:00. this will impact the coast and the north bay. if you're waking up and heading down the peninsula, give yourself extra time. slick condition, rainfall overnight and more on the way. qomming a little harder right now. tonight temperatures will be nice and comfortable. that rain will clear for a few hours. we'll see another round of residual showers tomorrow morning when we get back here. wait till i show you the seven-day forecast. for today, temperatures in the upper 70s, a couple low 80s. 79 for livermore, 75 for fremont, 64 in san francisco. you'll notice at the beginning of the seven day outlook, 79 degrees and showers. then we take you to the end of

your seven-day, 101. hot stuff headed our way. that means elevated fire danger. we're going to see major swings in temperature. want to make sure everybody is ready for this. temperatures jumping by almost 25 degrees between today and where we're headed over the next couple days. we'll have more on that and the rain for you every 15 minutes right here on nbc bay area. we have new details this morning following an attack on the presidential palace in afghanistan. an nbc reporter there on the ground says he was just outside that palace for a news conference with afghan president hamid karzai when gunfire broke out. everybody ran for cover. for the next half hour or so there were explosions about every few minutes. police there hid out for about 40 minutes until they were able to finally leave the area. afghan police now saying the five assailants were killed after a 90-minute gunfight in central kabul. two afghan guards also died.

the taliban now claiming responsibility for the attack. u.s. officials are pressuring russia this morning as they search for edward snowden. snowden is the man who leaked details of the government's secret surveillance programs. he was supposed to be on a flight from moscow to cuba yesterday but never showed up. we now learned he is getting help from wikileaks founder julian assange to get to ecuador. >> we are aware of where mr. snowden is. he is in a safe place and his spirits are high. >> the state department has warned all of latin america that snowden is on the run charged with espionage. the white house is hoping russian president vladimir putin will turn snowden over to the u.s. we continue keeping an eye on south africa where former president nelson mandela remains in critical condition this morning. we have new video from outside the hospital in pretoria where

mandela is being treated. doctors there said to be doing everything possible to help keep mandela feeling comfortable. he has been hospitalized since back on june 8th suffering with a reoccurring lung infection. 4:'50. investigators say a disney land worker charged with sexually assaulting a young girl may have had additional victims. 45-year-old brian annist is accused of as soughts an 11-year-old female relative and possessing child pornography. he was arrested last week at disney land where he works as a machinist. the girl says he assaulted her on four occasions over three years. if convicted, he could face life in prison. coming up in a much-anticipated speech, president obama set to address his plans today for climate change. speaking at georgetown university, the president planning to lay out his plan of reducing carbon pollution. mr. obama is also expected to call for the epa to set new carbon emission limits for new and existing power plants.

the president also wants to lead international efforts to combat global climate change. an extreme case of road rage on a southern california highway is caught on camera. the almost eight-minute video was shot with a dashboard cam on the 110 freeway. the driver in the gold car cut off the victim and became livid. he went in and out of traffic. he was throwing bottles and cans and yelling at the victim. at one point he jumps out, yells at the victim before running back to his car. the man who shot the video said the chp thought he was making the whole thing up until he actually showed them the video. the chp is now looking for that driver. >> that dude in the gold car needs to chill out. >> yeah, take a chill pill. >> a couple of them. 4:51. the streets of chicago unfortunately turned violent as fans get out of hand celebrating the blackhawks' big victory.

the olympic torch slated to go somewhere it has never been before. very cool. the unique new plan for the torch relay coming up. san jose, traffic flowing pretty nicely 101 at 680. in the area we have a trail of -- not bread crumbs, more like construction signs. we show you what's going on for the maps and the area coming up.

welcome back everybody. this is a live look from the south bay looking over san jose, a nice time of the morning, we get you the mixtures of the colors, the lights, the sky, the sun about to come up. christina loren warning, brace yourselves, grab an umbrella. it's going to be wet out there. 4:55. the black hawks from the nhl back home sharing the magic in chicago fresh off taking lord stanley's cup. the team landing at o'hare airport just a few hours ago. >> they're all pumped up in chicago. unfortunately some bedlam in the streets. never understood this. the fans pouring out of restaurants into the streets celebrating the win. that's the good part. the bad part is it got kind of rough. officials not giving us numbers, but our nbc affiliate in chicago saying several people had to be taken away in hand cuffs. the blackhawks actually out on the ice, the good stuff. they win this game in historic fashion. they come from behind ripping off two goals in the final 90

seconds of the game. that beats the bruins by a final of 3-2. got to love that. game seven winning it in the final seconds. this marks chicago's second stanley cup in the past four seasons. some of those new stanley cup champs will be competing for gold medal in sochi. this time the torch will reach new heights. as part of a four-month torch relay leading up to the sochi games. the torch will take its first trip to space in november. it will be unlit for safety reasons. >> crazy. >> torch relay starts october 7th and will cover more than 40,000 miles. the sochi olympics are next february. very cool. >> everybody suped up. mark inway is here with a look at traffic. what's up? >> looking at san jose.

this is not a big deal. we'll look at the bottom where the lights are lighting up the asphalt. the pavement not really slick, but it's still damp and wet in many spots in the bay area. map shows construction crews. this is just some k rail repair in scattered portions for 680. looks like a tremendous amount of stuff going on. really just one lane at a time including the 237 interchange. i got word of a crash south 880 at auto mall parkway. sounds like a big rig involved. we'll give you details. the time is 4:57. we're live in washington up next for a look at the supreme court and what it could say about california's ban on same-sex marriage. a new issue that could derail this year's america's cup. why one team says it may soon file suit.
