5:30 am
a deadly crash in fremont is the big issue we're following right now. we'll give you some work-arounds coming up. we want to show you the golden gate bridge, got some haze out there, rain coming down. the road is a little wet out there. tell you more on this tuesday, june 25th. this is "today in the bay." it's 5:30. good morning. thanks for being with us. i'm marla tellez. laura garcia-cannon is off today. >> i'm jon kelley. the rain really hitting the bay area this morning just as meteorologist christina loren has been forecasting. how are we looking? >> it's very unusual to get this much rain this time of year, jon and marla. i think people are refreshed and you certainly will be when i show you where we're headed on your seven-day outlook. showers steadily streaming onshore. we're starting to see more
5:31 am
widespread and organized activity at this point, especially along the peninsula. you want to travel cautiously out there, even though you might expect a lighter-than-normal drive, the showers will likely slow you down. we don't have flight delays out of sfo, but we will be checking. we had delays for three hours yesterday. 7:00 a.m., more widespread rainfall mostly concentrated in north bay. by 10:00 a.m. we'll start to see light rainfall here in the san jose area, more of the steady rainfall. we'll continue this timeline for you coming up. then i'll show you that seven-day outlook featuring the triple digit heat. when that returns coming up. 5:31. first, it's been kind of a rough drive already. it's still early out there, mike. >> good morning, folks. we'll take you, first of all, talking about christina mentioned, the weather. the rain-slick roadways. this is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. you see slick pavement, puddles. you see the water kicking up. that will be slick conditions and problems for reaction time.
5:32 am
you don't want to jerk that steering wheel around because it will start a spin out potentially. watch for that. as we look at the maps, a smooth drive approaching the area. a nice smooth flow through the maze. we have a sig alert south 880 as you pass stephen son boulevard. south of there is where it happened. big rig and a couple vehicles involved. one of three lanes is open, the slow lane. you can use grimmer to fremont boulevard or also use boyce and cherry on the other side of the freeway to get around this. 680 is clear. this is a big problem south of union city heading into fremont. it's 5:32 right now. anticipation is building in in washington, d.c. outside the u.s. supreme court. the clock continues ticking down on the final rulings of the session. among the decisions yet to be announced, california's prop 8.
5:33 am
"today in the bay's" cheryl hurd is live where the doors will be opening about an hour and a half from now. you've been there up close and personal, had a chance to talk to a lot of people. what are you anticipating today? >> reporter: well, at this point no one really knows what's going to happen. but the question that people asked me, just like you did, what do you think is going to happen and the fact of the matter is no one really knows. political experts believe that there are indicators, jon, and the red herring is the fact that the court decided to add an extra day of rulings today. one of the plaintiffs told me yesterday that she is feeling pretty optimistic about the situation. she feels that time is on her side. the justices have a menu of options to choose from. they might rule simple, or they could come out with a dramatic ruling. the policy director for the national center of lesbian rights here in washington, d.c. feels this way. >> i'm feeling optimistic about
5:34 am
both proposition 8 and the doma case. i think section three will get struck down. i think prop 8 is going to somehow -- i think prop 8 is going down, i'm not sure if it's going to be the supreme court making a ruling or just sort of punting it back to the circuit and letting that decision stand. >> >> reporter: people have their crystal balls out all over the country, in fact, all over the world. people here in washington, d.c. waiting for a ruling and they're being quite patient right now. instead of waiting outside, people are waiting inside in line. the heat may be a factor here. it is quite warm here in washington, d.c. we are waiting for the plaintiffs to arrive. they should arrive in about a half hour. we'll bring you an update here from washington, d.c. then. reporti reporting live from d.c., cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." >> looking forward to that one. when the decision does come down, san francisco's castro district will definitely be ready. the banners and balloons in
5:35 am
place right now and the barricades ready to shut down castro street. volunteers with the castro community on patrol, they say with each passing day the gathering is expected to get bigger and bigger because people are also arriving for the pride celebrations. >> more and more out of towners are coming to san francisco and that means the size of the crowd for the day of the decision is potentially going to be two or three times what it would have been if it had just been local people. >> we will be all over this one keeping you posted. as soon as that prop 8 ruling does come down, nbc bay area will break in -- nbc news will do that actually with a special report. we'll also bring you live coverage both right here in the bay yar and in washington, d.c. throughout the day, the morning and our 11:00 hour broadcast, 11:00 a.m. for continuing coverage, visit our website, nbcbayarea.com and simply search prop 8. at 5:35, we are following breaking news in san francisco. a triple shooting in the city's bayview district has sent three

people to the hospital. right now one of them is said to be in critical condition. "today in the bay's" christie smith just got to the scene. christie, what are you hearing out there? >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. i can tell you that investigators still keep coming to this home on elmira here in the bayview. hard to see. it's way up the street there. flashes are going off on the right-hand side. that's where this home invasion happened around 2:30 this morning. what san francisco police are telling us is that there were four people inside the home, a man, a woman and two children when three men, adult black men broke into the home. a man and a woman were shot inside. the woman has life threatening injuries. the man expected to be okay. there were also two children inside at the time. they were unharmed. initially reports came in that three people we shot inside. that third person shot is believed to be one of the home invasion suspects. he was taken to the hospital
5:37 am
along with the other two adults. the children taken as well, more as protective custody. they are at the hospital just sort of procedurally. investigators not exactly sure why this happened, they do think for some reason this home here was targeted. the other two people who entered the home, they are still on the loose this morning. they took off on foot. investigators telling us they will be here for quite some time trying to sort this out. but that's what we have for now. again, two people believe to be with life-threatening injuries, the woman and one of the suspects. that's the latest from here, reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." we can also tell you two men accused of killing a 3-year-old boy from oakland will be in court today. the preliminary hearing for lawrence denard and willy torrence is set to start this morning. police say back in august of 2011 the men opened fire in east oakland in a neighborhood there hitting and killing 3-year-old

carlos nava with a stray bullet. the rainy weather is causing headaches not only for commuters hitting bay area roads, but also for those traveling through the air. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from san francisco international airport with a look at how the wet weather is affecting flights. more than 150 flights were canceled altogether yesterday. >> reporter: yes, good morning. here at terminal one there are fingers crossed that they don't see the same thing again today, that they don't end up like this guy. this is a refugee from monday's travel nightmare. we're guessing he couldn't get out because of all the cancellations on monday. now he's a ball of flesh and backpack crammed into an out-of-the-way corner. we didn't have the heart to wake him from his deep sleep. today could be a repeat of yesterday. a quick check of the boards shows that most departures are on time here this morning. but it's only 5:38. the bad weather that christina is forecasting is still on its way. we're starting to see some of it
5:39 am
right now. wheel get a better sense around 6:00, 6:30 when the faa issues its daily ground delay program which basically outlines which of any flights will be delayed or canceled because of weather. >> what about weather, do you have any concerns about that? >> no, not really. >> your flight wasn't rescheduled from yesterday? >> no, no. i didn't even check the weather so i'm not sure what it's supposed to be there. hopefully it will be okay. >> reporter: yesterday at sfo, well over 100 flights that were canceled. we don't see any cancellations yesterday. but it's still early in the morning. here is something else that could affect delays and/or cancellations at sfo today, the airport does have one runway shut down for repairs. live here at sfo, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> okay, bob. thanks so much. christina loren is here. bob is watching the flights. she's watching the skies for us. more rain, more umbrellas. >> if i were a betting woman, i
5:40 am
would say they will have flight delays out of sfo. i wouldn't say that unless i really believed it because i'm the one that has to report those when they come in. i don't think we'll see anything out of san jose or oakland, but these thick low clouds are developing. in addition to that, san francisco is the area getting bullseyed by the showers streaming onshore right now. let's give you a general idea of the showers, moving from south to north, mostly impacting the peninsula. we haven't had a lot of activity in stouth bay. but i stopped the clock, you can see starting to get more organized, specials layer round the san francisco bay. we have mild temperatures out there, mostly in the 60s right now. your weather headlines tell the story. steady showers pour the morning drive. we'll clear out a little bit by this afternoon. by this weekend, we're talking about triple digit heat, elevated fire danger. i'm show you how it all works out on your seven-day outlook. let's check the drive with mike.
5:41 am

5:44 am
the u.s. government thinks edward snowden is in russia. but russia's foreign minister denying those reports. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. with the latest on the international search. this one is nothing short of a mysterious and strange search. what are you hearing? >> it's stim a mystery. we're hearing the u.s. government doesn't know exactly where he is. that denial that you talked about from the foreign minister this morning, a very strongly worded statement, essentially denying that yaush had anything to do with this. he said russia didn't know what his travel plans were until they saw it in the media. we do know and the airport in moscow has confirmed that he did touch down in moscow at that airport with a traveling companion on sunday. then the russian foreign minister said he's never been within our borders. so does that mean he just passed through the airport, he somehow

found safe haven or he's somewhere else? we just don't know this morning. >> tracie, thank you very much. 5:45, new details following an attack on temperatural palace in afghanistan. an nbc reporter on the ground says he was just outside the palace for a news conference with afghan president hamid karzai when gunfire broke out. everyone ran for cover. for the next 30 minutes there were explosions every few minutes reportedly. they hid out for about 40 minutes until they were able to leave the area. afghan police say the five assailants were killed after a 90-minute gunfight in central kabul. two afghan guards also died. the taliban has claimed responsibility for this attack. we continue keeping an eye on south africa where former president nelson mandela remains in critical condition this morning. we have new video from outside the hospital in pretoria where mandela is being treated. doctors there are said to be doing everything possible to help keep mandela feeling

5:48 am
showers typically do that to the morning drive. also, as we head throughout this evening, it's still going to be slick out there. we'll keep these on-and-off showers in the forecast throughout the day, but they will lighten up as you make your way home from work. tomorrow morning, light activity mostly along the coastline. we'll lose those showers. high pressure builds in quickly and that's going to boost our temperatures from the 70s today closer to 90 degrees. 79 for livermore today, 75 in fremont and 64 degrees on the way to san francisco. the seven day outlook, hold on tight, another wild ride. 79 degrees with showers today, lingering showers for tomorrow morning. then we crank that heat up to levels we have not yet experienced this year. so i want to make sure you're ready for that sunday into monday. we're talking at hot weather and high fire danger. 5:48 as promised. here is mike. >> we have a horrible situation right here on the roads. chopper just arrived on scene. i'll step out of your way. it looks like that's the
