this is "today in the bay." 4:31. good morning, happy to have you with us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning. a great looking day shaping up. that rain, upwards of 2 inch came down in the north bay. and that has been the talk of the town. the crazy weather in the bay area. now today, we'll see more of the standards for this time of year. so for a late june day we typically see mid-80s inland, that's where we're headed. then things change. temperatures will sore. as we head through the next few days. a lot to talk about. when it comes to your full forecast. 4:31. first a hard day yesterday. >> you know what? things are looking calmer now. there is an issue. trying find out what's going with the lightsen the oakland side the incline.

the berkeley curve, thi things running smoothly. i'll talk about it when i get a map. looking at the map, the maze, a darker drive toward the area off of the maze and the upper deck and treasure island. smooth flow of traffic, no problems reported and no problems so far. issue might be lighting on the bridge itself. car moving smoothly. i'll check. that may be a problem for the bridge lights. >> we can tell you, years of anticipation will be over in hours. the u.s. supreme court will issue rulings on two key same-sex marriage cases, one prop 8. california's ban on same-sex marriage. >> rallies are planned in san francisco to watch as that ruling comes down. but we begin with cheryl hurd from the courthouse in washington, d.c. what's the mood out there? >> last night only about 25

people in line. but this line has grown exponentially. this person was the first person in line, carlie. she got her number. you are what? >> number one in line. >> reporter: number one in line. she got here at 1:00 yesterday afternoon. as you can see, people here are waiting patiently. the folks that you're looking at right now were here overnight. all of this in anticipation of the historic ruling for gay marriage. this may have been the scene yesterday morning. people from all over the country want to witness history. everyone thought that the justices would wait until the last day to decide on two important issues, the gay rights fight. only thing that the public didn't anticipate is that it would come wednesday instead of thursday. there are so many types of people out here and we talked to one republican who is for gay marriage. . no one is losing by allowing more people to build families.

i think it's possible to have a social conservative reason for gay marriage. i think the more people can live in two-person families, the better off childhoods will be, better off people will be. >> reporter: as you can see, people are starting to march in. everything that's happening i think it seem like an hour ahead of schedule. last couple of days they started lining up about 7:00 our time. but now people are marching in right now. we're going to have an update coming up in a half hour. live from the supreme court, cheryl hurd," today in the bay"s. san francisco's city hall is ready no matter what the outcome. at 6:30 the doors will open for a public viewing of the supreme court's ruling. many same-sex couples say they're cautiously optimistic but know acceptance can take

time. >> we're hopeful. we are people of faith. we have faith things are going to fall into place, even if the supreme court doesn't support us now i have -- we all have to be ourselves and eventually people will get there i think. >> a monumental day all the way around. this evening a number of bay area cities will host decision day rally. people gather at san mateo county clerk's office at 5:00. 5:30, rallies in santa cruz and guerneville. at 6:00, san jose city hal and the caltrans station in mountain view. 6:30, supporters gather at rainbow community center in concord and san francisco's castro district. >> as soon as prop 8 ruling comes down, nbc news will break in with a special report. live coverage here in the bay area and in washington, d.c. throughout the morning and during a special hour long 11:00 a.m. broadcast. we'll continue in coverage.

nbcbayarea.com. search prop 8. we're expected to learn if b.a.r.t. workers plan to walk off the job. ballots counted through the nights as workers wrapped up a vote on whether to authorize a strike late last night. now both sides at odds over wages, health care benefits and pensions. if a strike is called, it could come as early as monday and that would make it a big-time mess on the commute as 400,000 people ride b.a.r.t. every weekday. the union that represents b.a.r.t. employees is expected to announce results of last night's vote at 9:00 this morning. 4:36. four people accused of taking part in the murder of a multimillionaire are expected back in court this morning. police say two men and two women took part in a home invasion robbery last november that ended in death of a man. they could enter a plea today. this month charges were dropped

against a fifth suspect after he provided a credible alibi. the former baggage handler accused of stealing is expected in court today. he has pleaded not guilty. they began investigating reyes after 50 complaints filed by customers about items missing from bags. warning signs posted today at linda mar beach in pacifica following a terrifying scene with a kayak attacked by a great white shark micah flansburg was kayaking with a friend when a great white shark exploded out of the water. . the shark clamped its teeth into the kayak and started thrashing it around. we've got shotted there. you can see teeth marks right in the side of the kayak. he did nothing short of holding on for dear life until the shark finally let go and swam away. >> it was half-shock and half just kind of elation. this is the biggest fish story

here the bay bridge toll plaza which looks clear, lighting fine here. off in the distance, above the city lights, low clouds, looming there. from emeriville camera in the clouds we see, this is shot across at the bay bridge toll plaza, the same area, a live camera. could barely see that. i thought lighting was an issue. it's not, it's low clouds drifting through. no problems with visibility. san mateo bridge, clearer view from the toll plaza, easy drive. east bay arc approach to the toll plaza is fine. it's here off 238 where we see slowing. no incident reported through the area. i'll call see if anything's going on. look at road sensors. changed from orange to red. registering below 20. may see one or two slower moving vehicles and that will mess up the average now. back to you. a high honor, three new

welcome back. good wednesday morning. 4:44. long will be the largest city in the country to ban plastic bags. city council voted last night to away the plastic bags at grocery stores and large retailers. much of the bans here in the bay area, paper bags cost shops are 10 cents. l.a.'s bag ban goes into effect january 1st. >> glad they're not fat dimes, hard to carry around. ftc issuing a new warning to the bay area's yahoo! and google. plus, bp make aggressive moves as it tries to avoid paying out billions after 2010 gulf oil spill. bertha coombs live at cnbc world headquarters and your wednesday look how futures are trading. good morning. >> good morning. we've got the futures pointing to a higher open at this stage of the morning. stocks rebounding tuesday on the

back of better than expected data on durable goods, new home sales and new prices. nasdaq snapped a four-day losing streak, 45 minutes from now a final reading on first quarter gdp which should show the economy grew at a modest pace during the first three month of the year. the dow rising 100 points 14760. the nasdaq yath a adding 27. bp taking out a full-page ad in the "the washington post," new york times and "wall street journal." mounting an aggressive campaign to challenge billion of dollars in settlement payouts in result of the oil spill. the federal trade commission is telling google, yahoo! microsoft to get with mobile these days. telling them they have to do a better job of identifying what search results are and paid ads

64 in livermore, 66 san jose. 64 san mateo. high pressure moves in quickly. and this is going to bring rapid changes. temperatures today soring from yesterday's highs. we keep climbing as we head through the next few days. what's interesting is even though we're going to see temperatures in the north bay and cities close to 90, we're still keeping showers in the mix until 11:00 a.m. we stop the clock by 1:00 p.m. mostly clear, mostly sunny over the greater bay area at that time. so we'll be done with showers at 11:00 a.m. and then temperatures will be noticeably warmer today. 85 degrees in livermore. 85 fremont. 66, good morning, san francisco. wake up, san francisco. it's going to be a nice day today. you're going to get the best weather throughout the weekend. temperatures will be in the triple digits inland. if you want to head over an

hour, takes a half hour, hour to the beach, that's the coolest weather will prevail. 77 on sunday at the coast versus 101, yeah, i know where i'd like to be. 4:49. nsa leaker edward snowden is likely still in the transit area of a moscow airport, according to russia's president putin. snowden flew to moscow on sunday after leaving hong kong. because he's not passed through immigration, russian officials say he's not technically in their jurisdiction. u.s. officials talking to russia about expelling snowden based on charges against him. snowden applied for asylum in ecuador. his application there is being reviewed. a south african archbishop offering a prayer for nelson mandela, posting the prayer on facebook after visiting mandela in the hospital. wishing 94-year-old former south african president a, quote, peaceful perfect end.

mande mandela's been hospitalized almost three weeks since june 8th, treated for reoccurring lung infection. he remains in critical condition. mike jackson's son prince will take the stand today to testify about his father's death. jackson's children along with grandmother katharine jackson sued concert promoter aeg live for the pop singer's death. the suit claims aeg live is libel because it hired dr. conrad murray, convicted of ain't involuntary manslaughter in jackson's death. executives had no way of knowing what treatments murray was delivering. yesterday marked four years sense jackson died of an overdose of propofol. in the wake of the tragedy of newtown, one school is testing out new emergency response system. this is meant to alert police and protect students with a push of one button.

this one of a kind panic button was installed in every room at an elementary school in stonington, connecticut. when pressed an emergency announcement made throughout the school and the classroom doors are locked limiting movement of an active shooter on campus. at the same time the panic button sends a message to both police and fire departments and other possible first responders. >> the key in this is the time, the response time. it has to be a lot better than it would have been without the system. >> that panic button at the school is just a part of a six-month pilot program. if all goes welling other schools could follow suit. this morning, president obama leaving the white house for a long anticipated visit to africa. just a couple of hours, president obama and the first family will leave andrews air force base for a week long trip that includes stops in senegal, south africa, tanzania to promote democracy and economic opportunities and it's his first

visit to africa as president. white house officials say mr. obama is not expected to meet with nelson mandela at the hospital while he's in south africa. the u.s. senate getting ready to move forward on immigration reform this morning. the sweeping legislation cleared an early hurdle monday and more test votes scheduled in the senate later on this morning. the bill would pour billions of dollars into border security and offer a path of citizenship to those in the country illegally. 4:52. trapped in giants country. a young dodgers fan from the bay area gets a special honor during the game. how he's using newfound fame to help bryan stow. a look here, crews are helping get ready for the morning commute. flashing lights disappearing into the fog. there's a sheen on the road. that's the big story. east bay, i found the reason why there's so much slowing on 880.
