good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning, everyone. yes, after years of anticipation, it will all be over in 90 minutes. this morning the u.s. supreme court issuing rulings on two key same-sex marriage cases, prop 8, california's ban on same-sex marriage. >> rallies are plan in california to watch as the ruling comes down. we begin live coverage with cheryl hurd from the courthouse in washington, d.c. what's the mood out there this morning, cheryl? >> reporter: things are not so festive. people just want to get in. a lot of people are waiting to get in. a lot of them have been waiting overnight. but it's already hot out here. that's why the mood is a little even right now. a lot of folks in line in favor of same-sex marriage. a lot of the people are students, some wrapped in the rainbow flag. not everyone is in favor of same-sex marriage. there are a lot of people who would like proposition 8 to

stand. 2008, you may remember, california voters voted 52% to ban gay marriage. here in washington, d.c., i spoke with the lead counsel for proposition 8. >> i think we have the strength of arguments, really this is a fundamental question about democracy, who decides important questions for society. is it a handful of judges or is it the people? >> here we are, waiting for the rulings. we have been monitoring these situations through scotus blog. the members came out here early this morning with doughnuts and gave them to the first people standing in line. everyone was excited about this. so if things go today the way they did yesterday and the day before, the folks will walk in at 10:00 eastern standard time, we probably may know in a half hour from then what the rulings will be. we'll have an update coming up in a half hour. live from the supreme court, cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news.

>> anticipation building also in san francisco. city hall expected to open up in just about an hour as people gather for the supreme court's announcement. >> a lot of action out there. christie smith live in san francisco where the state's very first same-sex marriage was performed in 2004. a very big day of action. what's the city planning for the ruling? >> reporter: well, i can tell you they are planning a number of things. also expecting a number of same-sex marriage supports are here. right now it's quiet in front of san francisco city hall. you can see movement inside, doors expected to open around 6:30. so far only seen one supporter. he said simply put, i believe in equality for everyone. this is the day that so many same-sex couples have been waiting for, perhaps no more than here in san francisco. in 2004, then-mayor gavin newsom

if a strike is called it could come as early as monday which would make a big-time mess of the morning commute as 400,000 people ride b.a.r.t. every weekday. the union representing b.a.r.t. employees expected to announce the results of last night's vote at 9:00 this morning. four people accused of taking part in the murder of a multimillionaire at a mention are expected back in court this morning. two n men and two women took part in the robbery that ended in the death of a man. they could enter a plea today. this month charges were dropped against a fifth suspect after he provided a credible alibi. the former united airlines baggage handler accused of stealing at sfo is expected in court today. he has pleaded not guilty. police began investigating reyes after 50 complaints from customers about items missing from bags. warning signs posted at

linda mar beach in pacifica, a scary scene with a kayaker attacked by a great white shark. micah flansburg, out kayaking with a friend when he says a great white shark simply exploded out of the water. that shark clampedite shark teeth on to the kayak, started thrashing around. teeth marks dug into the kayak. as you can imagine, he held on for dear life until the shark let go and swam away. >> it was half-shock and just half -- just kind of elation, like. this is the biggest fish story you could ever tell, getting attacked by agreat white shark, it just never happens. >> shark attacking you, elation, guy's pumped. the shark had not scared him from get back into the water. he can't wait to get back out on the ocean. >> wow! no kidding. >> crazy. too bad he doesn't have it on video. >> got the teeth marks.

putin. snowden flew to moscow sunday after leaving hong kong. because he's not passed through immigration, russian officials say he's not technically in their jurisdiction. u.s. officials are talking to russia about expelling snowden, base on the espionage charges against him. snowden has applied for asylum in ecuador. his application being reviewed. a south african archbishop offering a prayer for nelson mandela. the archbishop of cape town posting that prayer on facebook. w w wishing 94-year-old president a peaceful perfect end. hospitalized for three weeks since june 8th, treated for a reoccurring lung infection. he's in critical condition. michael jackson's son, prince, will take the stand in the los angeles courtroom to testify about his father's death. jackson's children, with the

grandmother, katharine jackson, sued aeg live for the death. the suit claims aeg live is liable because it hired dr. conrad murray. the company says jackson hires and controlled the doctor and executives had no way of knowing what treatments murray was delivering. yesterday, marked four years since jackson died of an overdose of propofol. a school out on the east coast is testing out a new emergency response system meant to alert police and protect students with a push of a single button. this one of a kind panic button installed in every room at an elementary school in stonington, connecticut. when pressed an aemergency announcement made throughout the school, and then doors are locked limiting movement of an active shooter. the panic button sends a message

to police and fire departments and other possible first responders. >> the key in this is the time, the response time, and it's -- it has to be better than it would have been without the system. >> the panic buttons at the school part of a six-month pilot program. if all goes well other schools could follow suit. president obama leaving the white house for a long anticipated visit to africa. in a couple of hours president obama and the first family will leave andrews air force base for a weeklong trip that includes stops in senegal, south africa, tan zzania to promote democrat d i economic opportunities. his second visit to africa as president. mr. obama not expected to meet with mandela at the hospital while in south africa. the u.s. senate ready to move forward on immigration reform this morning. the sweeping legislation cleared an early hurdle monday and more

through the next couple of hours especially sonoma county, the coastline. overall dry at this point. moisture begins heading to the north. a big ridge of high pressure going to start to move in. as we head through the day today. start to see the heat increase substantially as of this afternoon between five to ten degrees. we head through tomorrow, 90s return. we're going to jump from the mid-80s to the mid 90s. 85 degree forward livermore. 77 in oakland. 66 in san francisco. here's your all-important seven day outlook. we are going to get really hot. the hottest weather of the year so far on the way as we head through sunday into monday. i want to make sure you're ready especially if you've got the kids at home for summertime. spf 30-plus time, mike. >> make popsicles and the cool drinks. a cooler shot at least for now. it's cool except for if you're trying to see the roadway which is what i'm trying to do. the east shore freeway.

there's some leak. i may call it now. >> you just did. 5:48. major anticipation going on in san francisco. people lining up out in washington, d.c., and people down in the south bay also watching very closely waiting for the big decision from the supreme court. >> same-sex marriage supporters are planning events once a decision comes down. bob redell joins us live in san jose where he talked with two gay marriage supporters eagerly waiting for the decision. >> reporter: a lot of people in the south bay. good morning. here at city hall, lgbt activist group called hearts on silicon valley meeting tone at 6:00 to celebrate or rally over whatever the supreme court decide. announcement expected within an hour. we spoke with michelle and pat, san jose couple married for three yeared. marriage recognized by their church but not by the state of california. up until yesterday, they felt pretty good that the supreme

court would strike down prop 8 but yesterday the justices struck down a part of the voting rights act. they fear that if the justices ruled against that civil rights issue, it might not bode well for gay rights. >> it would feel incomplete in our life to not be able to get fully married legally. we are already married, recognized as a married couple in our community and our families in the state of california, we're domestic partners. it just would make sense -- would feel incomplete. we feel slightly less citizens without that ability to get married. >> spiritually, and in our hearts we've been married since three years ago. in that sense, it's not going to change anything in our heart. >> reporter: they plan to attend a gathering at their church on the peninsula. they're praying it's going to be a time to celebrate, not a time to mourn. live here at san jose city hall,
