a very good friday morning to one and all. yes, indeed, it is friday. it's 4:31. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's first check the friday forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning. it is an important forecast to let everybody know across the bay area about temperatures this morning, in the mid to upper 60s. livermore starting at 68 degrees. today is the coolest day of the heat wave that starts today. we're talking about record warmth, the dog days of summer and an excessive period of time that we're going to have to deal with these really hot temperatures. i'm going to take you through the forecast. i do know when the heat will break and i'll let you know, it might surprise you a little bit. first let's check your drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning. we'll look over here toward the palo alto shot. you notice there's a sign there. it's not lit up.

the willow road off-ramp sign is not lit up. you have a smooth drive through the area. along the peninsula, both move at speed. a lot of construction side. on and off-ramp through san mateo. northbou watching reports of a crash involving a big rig. chp has to give us more details. we'll track that. but no slowing just yet. back to you. all right. this morning b.a.r.t. is speaking to the media for the very first time since the union gave a 72-hour strike notice before 11:00 last night, the union informing b.a.r.t. if there is no contract in place by the end of sunday night, workers will walk right off the job. that would bring b.a.r.t.'s system to a screeching standstill, leaving an estimated 400,000 passengers looking for a new ride monday morning. despite the notice, both sides are still negotiating. oakland city workers calling

a special news conference for 10:00 this morning. you'll remember earlier this month workers in those unions also voting the authorize a strike. now we do not know if there's a news conference, to give a 72-hour strike notice to the city of oakland. we have calls in to the union and we're working to confirm what this meeting is all about. we will, of course, bring you any new information as soon as we get it. >> 4:33. this morning the world continues to keep a watchful eye on the health of nelson mandela. his family was seen returning the the hospital in pretoria where the anti-apartheid leader remains in critical condition. yesterday one of his daughters said he was opening his eyes and responding to her touch president barack obama will be within miles of that hospital in pretoria today, but as of now it's unclear whether he will visit mandela. mr. obama started this morning

in senegal before heading to south africa where he's expected to meet with embassy personnel at the u.s. consulate in johannesburg this afternoon. his visit is largely overshadowed by mandela's health. yesterday the president called the leader a, quote, hero for the world. the white house says a visit is up to mandela's family. closer to home. the two men accused of a drive-by shooting that killed a 3-year-old oakland boy will stand trial for murder. a judge ordering lawrence denard and will will torrence to stand trial in the death of carlos nava. police say denard opened fire outside a grocery store in east oakland. a stray bullet then hit young nava killing him. torrence is accused of driving that car. a new look and another delay for the man accused of kidnapping and killing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. nbc bay area was the only station with a camera at

yesterday's hearing. you can see garcia-torres wearing his hair slicked back and a suit. quite a contrast to when he was first arrested. yesterday the judge pushing back his plea hearing to july 23rd. the attorney for torres now waiting for prosecutors to turn overall evidence in this case. the prosecutors say they're working with the sheriff's department to make sure to do that. 4:35. berkeley police need your help finding a man who sexually assaulted a woman at uc berkeley's fraternity and sorority road. police say john anthony martin walked into an apartment last sunday and groped a woman in her sleep. she woke up and screamed and he ran. officers will not say if the assault took place in a fraternity or sorority house. they say he entered several rooms in that building before entering the woman's room. the city of san francisco getting ready for what could be a record setting pride gathering. more than a million people expected in san francisco this weekend to celebrate an extra special weekend following the

supreme court's decision to lift the ban on same-sex marriage in california. no doubt there is some controversy surrounding this year's event. protesters showed up at last night's kick-off party angry army private bradley manning was not made grand marshal for sunday's parade. pride organizers say all voices are welcome. >> he exposed u.s. war crimes in iraq and afghanistan. >> we want voices heard from all levels of the political spectrum. we value that. >> police say plain-clothes and uniform officers will be in force. cameras will be set up on market street to monitor the entire parade right. paul cad dom many, jeff czar ril low, kris perry and sandra steier expected to take place in the festivities. this weekend marks the 43rd annual pride parade in the city

of san francisco. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren right now. >> it's going to be a hot one. the people that are going to be headed out there need to make sure to stay hydrated because we're talking about excessive heat and the kind of heat that's going to sneak up on us because it's going to come in very quickly starting today. yesterday was a hot day. today even hotter. good morning to you, livermore. you are at 6 degrees to kickoff a friday morning. here is where we're headed as we head throughout the day. we're not going to see a whole lot of fog this morning. nothing really to cool us down. high pressure is coming in quickly. it's going to drive the winds offshore as we head throughout the second half of the day. these are your high temperatures throughout the day, 97 in livermore. 97 degrees in fairfield and 93 today in wine country. some hot grapes up there. as we head through the next few days, we really get into the brunt of this warmup. what i can tell you right now is it will be the hottest stretch

of weather that we've had so far this year. it's not only going to last for two to three days, we're talking five to six consecutive days of triple digit heat inland. i'm going to short that out, show you the seven-day outlook. i'll show you where to be, best places across the bay area to stay cool. with those micro climates there are places where you can get outside where it's not too hot. i'll show you those coming up. first let's check your drive. that's going to be a problem next week, huh, mike? >> with the heat, a lot of folks like to take the top down and cruise around. you stril to focus on the morning commute, definitely. we're looking towards the bay bridge. over the water you can't stop and enjoy the coast sight. a smooth drive as construction crews cleared overnight. eastbound highway 4 has some slows. there's a brokedown, either a big rig and or on the shoulder. east highway 4 around hillcrest

and debris reported around the curve at the antioch bridge. two reasons to slow down, one for mechanical difficulties, the other possibly for a traffic break. commute direction toward 242 and 680 now a smoother drive. wheel end with this map and show you there's mild slowing northbound 680. watch that. your commute direction is typically westbound for both of those freeways. you know all about this one, mike. starting today the santa clara valley transportation authority will be closing all lanes but one on montague expressway. the closure will be in both directions between milpitas and capital avenue lasting through monday morning. it's for the new extension project. the $2.3 billion project is a 16-mile extension bringing the b.a.r.t. system to san jose, milpitas and santa clara. it's expected to be complete sometime? 2017. in palo alto, there's expected to be a lot of extra

traffic around stanford university tomorrow night. 50,000 people expected to be there for the san jose earthquake's game against the l.a. galaxy, also known as the california casio. the team moved the game to accommodate all the fans. tomorrow's game will start at 7:30. the golden gate bridge switching over to an all-electronic toll may have hit some bumps in the road back in march. signs warning drivers not to stop at the tolls, instead those without fast track would be mailed an invoice for $6.00. this morning "the chronicle" reporting about 400 out of 400,000 people who mailed in payments on time were sent back a notice saying their payment was late and they now owed a $25 fee on top of that toll. a spokeswoman says that toll processing center was simply overwhelmed and failed to process the payments on time. 4:40. google tackles another popular tourist destination as it tries to give the armchair tourist a

welcome back everyone. we really love these vistas in the morning because the sun arrives a little earlier than we usually see in the summer. 4:44, a look over the south bay. simply beautiful start to our day. san francisco's famed tamale lady starting a campaign to raise money for her brick and mortar shop. virginia ramos has already raised more than $2,000. but the 60-year-old needed 150,000 for a legal commercial kitchen. ramos said yesterday her shop would be a place people could come by tamales and talk about life. earlier this month she was told she could no longer sell her

tamales at the bar because the health department complained she was not a lie sensd vendor. we know google has offered us beautiful views. now the mountain-based company is heading for more remote trails, working out a deal with the hawaiian visitors bureau to give you a look at the state's gorgeous hiking trails. shooting on the big island already under way. google says it will shoot more than just rain forests out there. it will also add beaches and trails paved with lava rock. speaking of google, the mountain view company rumored to be working on competition for xbox and play station. bertha coombs at cnbc headquarters has more on that. bertha, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. man, i'd kind of like to have that job shooting the hiking trails in hawaii. futures this morning are pointing the a higher start.

it looks like stocks after having a three-pete might be heading for a four-pete, the dow posting its best three-day gain in a year. the dow starts the day back above 15,000 at 15,024 after jumping 114 points yesterday. the nasdaq starts at 3,401 after rising 25. google is looking to branch out beyond smart phones and tablets. the "wall street journal" says the company is working on a video game consul and a wristwatch to combat what apple may be developing. the "journal" says google wants to develop and sell the devices itself and may release at least one of the products this fall. very interesting. folks may be talking to their phone, very dick tracy. >> i like the dick tracy reference. i was excited when they first came up with those phones you could take around. >> all you need is a "get smart"

also see poor air quality. we'll likely see that happen over the weekend. you want to limit your outdoor activity if you can if you live inland for the morning and evening hours just to play it safe out there. heat is the number one weather-related death, number one cause of weather-related deaths, more than tornadoes and hurricanes, it's heat. make sure you stay hydrated. 92 degrees in san jose. as we head through your saturday and we talk about what's going to happen, the big ridge of high pressure moves in. we don't get any relief overnight. even at 2:00 a.m. on saturday, temperatures will be in the 70s in san jose, livermore and antioch. overnight lows, you'll have to run your ac all night long. they're not going to be better monday and tuesday. that's when we'll be in the brunt of this heat wave. by noon on saturday, tomorrow at noon, you're already going to be at 98 degrees at lunchtime in antioch with five additional hours of warming to go. it is going to be hot.

104 monday, 102 on tuesday. those are the hottest days. we'll stay hot as our overnight lows don't get much improvement wednesday into tuesday. this is dangerous heat and it's the kind you don't want to mess around with. over to you. >> no kidding. thanks for the warning there. 4:49 right now. new this morning, oscar pistorius, the olympic athlete accused of killing his girlfriend is returning to the track, but not to compete. in a statement released this morning, his family says they've encouraged him to get back on the track to, quote, help him process his trauma and get ready for trial. prosecutors say he deliberately shot his girlfriend on valentine's day. pistorius says he thought she was a burglar. the trial is set to begin in august. also this morning, football star aaron hernandez already facing murder charges, now being investigated in a second murder case, an unsolved double homicide in boston. this as hernandez sits in a

massachusetts jail, yesterday a judge denying bail to the former new england patriot tight end for a second time. he stands accused of orchestrating the execution style shooting of his friend oden lloyd. investigators believe lloyd may have had information about hernandez's possible role in a shooting that killed two men back in july. after clearing the senate, the historic immigration bill facing an uncertain future in the house this morning. speaker john boehner says the house will not vote on the bill. instead, republicans in the house plan to introduce their own immigration legislation. the senate bill sets a pathway to citizenship for as many as 11 million illegal immigrants in the u.s. it also calls for $30 billion to be spent to improve security along the mexican-american border. the city of sacramento hoping it has figured out how to slow down copper wire thieves. the city will soon start

installing wires that contain idea fires that indicate they belong to sacramento. the changeover will take a few years to complete. the sacramento bee reporting over the last three years the city has spent about $1.7 million repairing street lights after the copper wire was stolen. on its way to the sun. >> three, two, one, drop. >> wow, ung usual rocket launch from the central coast on a mission to unlock a solar mystery. the rocket carries a space satellite designed to track changes in a mysterious portion of the sun's lower atmosphere. scientists hope the mission will help explain why the sun's surface is so much cooler than its upper atmosphere. >> i'm always intrigued by space exploration. now we're checking out the sun. better wear glasses. 4:51, the warriors are

welcome back everybody. golden state has named its newest warrior making moves during the nba draft just to bring him out here to california. the team didn't originally have any draft picks. the warriors made trades picking up serbian guard know vich with the 30th overall pick. the 22-year-old is reportedly one of the best guards in all of europe. good luck to him and the warriors. former cal bear alan crab will soon be playing pro basketball. he was the first pick in the second round taken by the cleveland cavaliers. the team immediately traded crab to the portland trail blazers. he's the first golden bear drafted since 2008. a battle of the sections could play out on the hard core. serena williams says she'd be up for a match-up against british player andy murray. after a news conference williams
