you got that right. always happy on monday. 5:316789 thanks for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. new this morning, take a look at this. an early morning fire completely destroying an rv in oakland. it happened near the corner of 20th and campbell just before 4:00 this morning. crews were able to control the fire in about 15 minutes. we're told the rv was empty at the time and no one was hurt. on the international scene the world continues to keep a watchful eye on the health of nelson mandela. his family was seen returning the the hospital in pretoria, south africa, this morning where the anti-apartheid leader remains in critical condition. the former south african president yesterday was opening his eyes and responding to his

daughter's touch. mandela was admitted to the hospital nearly three weeks ago to be treated for a reoccurring lung infection. president obama was within miles of that hospital in pretoria today, but as of now it's unclear whether he will visit mandela. mr. obama started his morning in senegal before heading to south africa where he's expected to meet with embassy personnel at the u.s. consulate in johannesburg this afternoon. but his visit largely overshadowed by the heblth of nelson mandela. the white house saying a visit is up to mandela's family. in ten minutes we will go live to wad for an update on the president's trip. the senate celebrating a rare victory, agreement on immigration. scott mcgrew, republicans and democrats trying to work

together. but we'll see. >> this would all be if the house agrees to it. let's look at the positive. the so-called gang of eight were able to hammer out an agreement which allows a path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented workers, allows a faster path to work for farm workers and in exchange, vastly increases the strength of border security. this is also good news for highly educated immigrants as well. the immigration bill increases the number of visas for highly skilled workers and those who graduate american college programs with science degrees and wish to stay and work in america. this is all well and fine, but as you point out, laura, we're getting clear signals from the republican-led house of representatives, not only will it not pass the bill, the house may not even let the bill be debated. "the washington post" this morning speculates, not only is there a split along ideological lines, but republicans in the house may shut down further reform as a way of damaging

their own candidates' run for the white house. senator marco rubio of florida a big supporter of immigration report. "the post" says many republicans in the house house are angry about a compromise and may shut it down for that reason alone. >> scott, thank you very much for the update. 5:34. big-time heads up and warning from b.a.r.t. workers. gave a 72-hour strike notice before 11:00 last night, the union informing b.a.r.t. if there is no contract in place by the end of sunday night, workers will walk right off the job. that would bring b.a.r.t.'s system to a screeching standstill. >> reporter: at 10:00 this morning. i've ben talking to people as they make their way to catch their trains. i'm so surprised that everyone seems to be taking this in stride. they're rather calm about this,

the overall feeling is, hey, if b.a.r.t. strikes, what can you do about it? not a lot i don't can do except be prepared. in the event of a strike, the san francisco bay ferry is planning to increase its service, a spokesman tells us they'll be prepared to carry 50,000 passengers compared to the 20,000 they typically do. ac transit, another potential option. it will boost the number of buses it runs on a daily basis. this is where it gets stickier. listen to this, ac transit has also authorized a strike. that agency's contract expires sunday night at midnight, the same time b.a.r.t.'s does. ac transit workers could walk e picket line on monday as well. the last time b.a.r.t. went on strike was in 1997. that lasted for six days. the gridlock was brutal even with a merepfn225,000 weekday riders who were without a ride. i say mere because these days an

estimated 400,000 people ride b.a.r.t. every weekday. as i mentioned, most riders we spoke to this morning, they are calm, taking it in stride. they say that are prepared. >> you're going to car pool with co-workers? >> it's like a plan b. >> so you've already thought about it? >> at work we've thought about this. >> you take b.a.r.t. every day? >> not every day, only maybe a couple times a week. >> if there's no b.a.r.t. service? >> drive to work. >> is that a big inconvenience? >> no, not really. >> reporter: i told you, they do seem so calm about this. at issue is salary, pension and health care benefits. b.a.r.t. workers want a 23% salary increase over three years and their health care and pension benefits protected. this morning i'm waiting to hear back from both b.a.r.t. and b.a.r.t.'s unions. i have calls into both. no matter what, we will get new

information from b.a.r.t.'s unions at a 10:00 press conference. of course, we'll be there. live in fremont, marla tellez, "today in the bay." speaking of work stoppage, oakland city workers calling a special news conference for 10:00 this morning. you may remember earlier this month workers in those unions also voting the authorize a strike. at this point we don't know if the news conference is to announce a 72-hour strike notice. we'll bring you any new information we get as soon as we get it to our newsroom. >> if that happens, it's going to be a mess on monday. >> be ready to pack your patience. >> that's right, and maybe take alternatives as well. >> telecommuting. >> i like that, mike. >> we're silicon valley, see if folks can work it out. right now some of those workers through oakland cleared up early. it's friday. the road crews are gone. 880 not experiencing any

problems. a little light here pour the coliseum area. no big deals 580, 880 through oakland. a slower build through the interchange. we're looking at the wrong-way driver that was originally reported. i told you about this. this is over on highway 85. the off-ramp on camden avenue, someone reported someone entering the freeway using the off-ramp. chp headed out there and did not find anything of the sort. no crashes in the last ten minutes. that is good news. we will keep our eyes peeled and listen to scanners for the area. we don't want any problems like that, nothing going on so far right now. a live look outside will end with a shot of the peninsula. 101 moving smoothly up to the golden gate bridge. there's a little team there. it's hot and there's water. >> it is hot out there. i noticed motorcycles on the roads yesterday. keep your bottom on the seat. i saw a guy riding high like

that. makes us all nervous. 66 in livermore, 64 in san jose and 60 degrees in gilroy to start the day. it's going to be a really hot day. thanks for waking up with us on a friday. we'll help you take the edge off this heat. we stop the clock at noon today. between now and noon, you can get out there with comfortable conditions. by noon today we're already talking about 90s inland, 93 in livermore. you can count on a really hot day ahead as temperatures warm up toward the century mark, not quite hitting it but getting oh so close. we're not talking about the brunt of the heat wave until next week. today they'll see temperatures down south, 120-degree range. for us not quite as brutal, but it will be. that big bring of high pressure is located over southern california right now. it's headed north towards us.

welcome back everybody. happy friday morning to you. today president obama will be within miles of nelson mandela as the former south african president remains hospitalized in critical condition. white house officials have not said if the two leaders are planning to meet. "today in the bay's" tracie potts live on capitol hill. she's been following the president's trip very closely. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. we've been following developments on the ground today, too. we're getting conflicting reports out of south africa on whether or not this meeting may

happen. the president is in the air on his way to south africa after visiting senegal. he spent a couple days there. yesterday a big highlight of his trip was his visit to gory island which was sentries was believed to have been the center of slave trade. he visited there with the first family. this morning he had an event on what's called food security, essentially talking to farmers about how they use technology to feed millions of people in africa despite the bad droughts they have in west africa. the focus of the trip, trade and economy. the first african-american president and the first black president in south africa will get a chance once again to shake hands. nelson mandela in critical condition in the hospital. his family, his ex-wife and his daughter expected to speak shortly. maybe we'll find out a little bit more then. >> no doubt the president and the white house trying to be very respectful of a tough time for the family.

>> it is 5:43. locally organizers expecting one of the biggest celebrations in san francisco pride history this weekend of course coming after this week's historic decisions on gay marriage by the supreme court. "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live in san francisco with more details on the preparations taking place. >> reporter: good morning and happy friday. this is the 43rd annual san francisco pride parade and celebration happening this weekend. normally it's quite something, the parade attracting at least a million people. can you imagine what it's going to be like this sunday. of course, the crowds expected to swell all because of the historic decision that came down this week on same-sex marriage. some hotels are saying while they normally sell out, they've gotten plenty of last-minute calls, people wanting to be here for the largest pride event in the country and also wanting to stay a couple extra days. celebrations really got under way wednesday night when people started to gather in the castro district to mark the historic

day. the supreme court lifted the ban on same-sex marriage in california. the parade route, of course, lined with rainbow flags and also security cameras. plainclothes and uniform officers will be out in force to keep everyone safe because so many more people are expected and officers had this advice while you're out there celebrating. >> we want you to keep a close eye on your drinks. we don't want any people drugging any drinks and becoming victims of crime that way. also with that being said, we want people to be mindful of their electronic devices. we don't want people to fall victim. >> reporter: always good advice. fresh off the historic sprerm court decision, all the plaintiffs will be in the parade. the transgender marking ten years of marching. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the

a bill dome of high pressure will make things really hot down south. if you're headed that way, especially driving the 5 all the way down, make sure you have plenty of fluids in your vehicle. you want to really take it easy. bring extra water with you just in case. 60 degrees at 3:00 a.m. in oakland, holding on to the 60s. at 3:00 a.m., 72 in livermore. it's going to be a balmy night. apz we continue to see the heat come in, the overnight lows will end up in the 80s monday into tuesday night. not getting much relief in the heat of the day, triple digits on saturday. look at monday, 105 inland, 102 on tuesday. between monday and tuesday, that's when we're expecting the hottest night. as we continue to see these days draw on, 100-degree-plus weather. we get the northerly winds. we're very concerned about high fire danger. next thursday, the fourth of july, temperatures will cool off, the heat will break.

it will be very dangerous when it comes to fire concerns. first we want to check your drive and see how we're doing there on a friday. >> good morning. it is friday. the volume of traffic lighter. it's also summertime. we're watching for the late burst and it hits hard in the south bay on friday. northbound 101 not a big deal. is the only area of any speeds below the limit showing on our sensors right now. northbound north of 280/680 interchange, that's where you might see slowing around the bend. a look at fremont as folks head southbound. 880 southbound past the truck scales, an easy drive. you're at the limit basically between the san mateo and dumbarton bridges, down into the south bay. a look at the maps, over here through the tri-valley, an easy drive and no slowing to speak of coming down through livermore and into dublin. we have highway 84 at vallecitos, a traditional build there as well as into livermore

out of the altamont pass, the volume starting to build. as we look at the stanley area, that interchange where we had earlier construction, looks like everything is cleared up without an issue. over here toward the bay bridge, castro valley y moves smoothly. the cash lanes have backed up, but the fast track lanes are still opening, no metering lights, guys. back to you. thank you very much, mike. new this morning, oscar pistorius, the olympic athlete accused of killing his girlfriend returning to the track, but not to compete. his family says they have encouraged him to get back on the track thole him, quote, process his trauma and prepare for trial. prosecutors say the double amputee known as the blade runner deliberately shot his girlfriend at his south africa home on valentine's day. pistorius says he thought she was a burglar. the trial is set to begin in august. another athlete in serious hot water. football star aaron hernandez already facing murder charges

now being investigated in a second murder case. this one a double homicide in boston. this as hernandez sits in a massachusetts jail. just yesterday a judge denying bail to the former new england patriot tight end for a second time. hernandez accused of orchestrating the execution-style shooting of his friend oden lloyd. he's pleaded not guilty. investigators now believe lloyd may have had information about hernandez isz possible role in a shooting that killed two men back in july. it is 5:50, google tackles another popular tourist destination as it tries to give us all an armchair look at the most beautiful places on earth. plus our gadget friday, something for the garden that dads everywhere will say, oh, yeah, i need one of those.

black hawks are getting set to celebrate their lord stanley championship. they knocked out the boston bruins in six games. they'll have a tour around the town and end up in grant park celebrating another world title. congratulations to the chicago blackhawks. 5:53 right now. in the past google has offered us street views from some of the greatest sites ever, the great barrier reef to the highest peak on the planet, mount everest. now the mountain view company heading for some remote trails. it has worked out a deal with hawaiian visitors bureau to give you a look at the state's gorgeous hiking trail. the shooting on the big island already under way. that would be a great gig if you could get it. google says it's going to be shooting more than just rain for us. it will add beaches and trails paved with hardened lava rock. scott mcgrew will keep the kids cool this weekend when i drop them off. he has some sort of garden hose.

it's gadget friday. >> not just any kind of garden hose. the folks who make this call this the 21st century portal watering system. the neighbors have a garden hose. the mcgrews have a water system. i'll step away. as i pull the hose, it has a motor feed that pushes the hose out along with it. as i walk across the studio and now i walk back, ill eve got all this hose and finished watering, et cetera. now i have to reel it up. you know exactly what's going to happen and that is exactly -- >> like my vacuum. >> that's exactly right. i'll press this button and in it goes. just almost $650 for this. >> get out! are you kidding me? >> it is super cool. here. i'm do it again. it has a vol v on it.
