the jet stream pushes way to the north. we have rising air, a clockwise flow of air around this. it's like a giant heat pump. look at what we've got right now. excessive heat watches and heat warn tprings from parts of new mexico until, nevada all seeing temperatures expected to be dangerous temperatures. boise up to 99 degrees. salt lake 99. phoenix 119, temperatures even higher on saturday. the all time record high for las vegas 117. looks like it will be there, new mexico 121, boise again at 102 and on sunday it continues. a high of 100 in boise, phoenix 116, vegas at 117, and we're not looking at a real break in this until sometime on monday and tuesday, savannah. al, thank you.

we have new details on a story nbc news was first to break. a target of an investigation for leaking classified information. our correspondent has the story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. questions are swirling over whether he'll face charges for leaking classified information about a u.s. cyberattack in iran. retired general james cartwright, a trusted member of the president's national security team. second highest ranking member of the u.s. military and former vice chairman of the joint chiefs of staffs. now legal sources say he is the target of a justice department criminal investigation into a leak about a covert u.s. cyberattack on iran's nuclear program, an investigation the president himself demanded last year. >> these are criminal acts when they release information like

this. >> reporter: the new york times had broken the story that president obama had ordered a stepped up cyber weapons attack using a computer virus known as stuxnet, a program cartwright oversaw from the pentagon. cartwright did not respond to request for comment from nbc news, his lawyer gregory craig said only i have no comment. the story disclosed key details about the attack, including the code name, olympic games, the cooperation of israel intelligence and disabling 1,000 iranian centerfuses. >> when is that understand by our enemies, that makes it harder for those meth kwrudz od

related methods to be used in the future. that's devastating. >> reporter: white house and justice department officials declined to comment of any aspect of the case but federal prosecutors developed their case without issuing a subpoena for phone records from the new york times. >> it's very timely michael and on another story you're covering, the high profile leak case you have an exclusive interview with edward snowden's father. >> right. today his father is sending a letter to attorney general eric holder saying he is reasonably confident that his son will return home if the justice department will promise not to detain him prior to trial, not to subject him to a gag order and let him choose where his trial will take place. he hasn't spoken to his son since april but said he had a message for him and is concerned his son is being manipulated by others, especially wikileaks. >> i love him. i would like to have the opportunity to communicate with him. i don't want to put him in peril. but i'm concerned about those around him. if you look at wikileaks, their goal is not the constitution of

the united states. it's to release as much as possible. that alone is a concern for me. at this point i don't feel he has committed treason. he has, in fact, broken u.s. law in a sense that he has released classified information and if folks want to classify him as a traitor, in fact, he has betrayed his government but i don't believe he has betrayed the people of the united states. >> so far there's been no response from the justice department on the letter, matt. all right michael, thank you very much. natalie is here now with details on a scandal and this one involves a vatican official. that's right. this is a big deal matt. we have breaking news from the vatican this morning where a catholic church official has been arrested. italian police say he allegedly plotted to smuggle the equivalent of $26 million in cash into the country from switzerland aboard an italian

government plane. officials say he was already under investigation in an alleged money laundering scheme that reportedly involved the vatican bank. his arrest comes two days after pope francis created a commission to investigate the vatican bank. history on capitol hill as the senate approved a massive immigration overhaul. next, the house and what is likely to be a stuff fight. nbc's capitol hill correspondent, kelly o'donnell, has more. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning natalie. stuff because house republicans don't believe the plan will stop future waves of illegal immigration and won't really secure the border but for those longing for and fighting for a new path to citizenship, this truly is historic. anticipation had been building for decades. >> the yays are 68, nays are 32. >> emotion let loose. >> the sergeant at arms will

the white house is saying they will defer to the wishes of the mandela family. the possibility of the president coming here to meet nelson mandela is just that, a possibility but certainly the president's focus will be on nelson mandela and his extraordinary life. thanks so much. new details are emerging in the case against boston marathon bombing suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev. his 30-count federal indictment alleges that he learned how to make explosives on the internet and gathered material. he faces bombing and other charges in the april attacks. prosecutors have yet to decide if they'll seek the death penalty. tsarnaev will be arraigned next month. the cost of buying a home just went up. mortgage rates jumped more than half a point in the last week t. biggest one week increase in 26 years. the average right now for a 30

literally been a matter of minutes they had to do a lot of high water rescues. we have a risk of strong storms stretching from the southeast all the way to new england. large hail, damaging winds, dangerous lightning. on the radar you can see we're looking at the swirl of clouds, of radar and rain making its way to the northeast. back behind it rain around the upper ohio river valley. some areas will be picking up over the next 24 hours anywhere from 2 to 3 inches of rain with, again, that risk of strong storms up and down the eastern seaboard. we'll get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds. .

rick perry is bringing attention to her past and her past to politics. >> a showdown in texas. ask democratic state senator wendy davis's filibuster on tuesday helped keep a vote that would shut down abortion clinics in texas. republican governor, rick perry, comments about her, and made politics personal. >> she was a daughter of a single woman and teenage mother herself. she managed to graduate from harvard law school and serve in the texas senate. it's just unfortunate that she hasn't learned from her own example. >> davis quickly responded. >> i would just say that it really demeans the office that he holds to make a personal statement like that. >> reporter: davis's marathon legislative session made national headlines early this week. even the pink running shoes she wore became an online sensation.

lloyd's murder. aaron hernandez is being held in jail without bail for the same crime. dumped from the new england patriot's roster after his arrest, the nfl player pled not guilty to the murder of 27-year-old lloyd but the trial for first-degree murder is not hernandez's only concern. law enforcement officials confirmed that nbc news that police are investigating the nfl player's possible connection to two other murders in boston last july. late at night, two men were shot and killed in their car. a third was wounded. charges have not been filed and no suspects have been named. >> this week it was considered a cold case. while officials won't comment on the record what they will say on the record is the case has become much more robust. >> reporter: on thursday, hernandez's legal team appealed the decision to deny bail in the odin lloyd case arguing that their client was not a flight risk. >> he didn't do anything to hide. he didn't do anything to run.

he cooperated fully when the police came to his house on multiple occasions. >> reporter: the defense lawyer called the case against hernandez entirely circumstantial. the judge was not swayed. >> this is a case that circumstantial to be sure but very, very strong. >> reporter: bail request denied. outside the courthouse, hernandez's fiancee tried to make a quick exit while fans chanted their support. not easy reconciling the alleged criminal with the star athlete. this was aaron hernandez talking to maria in april. >> i just try to be a role model and when i see hispanics that look up to me i try to lead them in the right direction. >> reporter: right now nothing is going in the right direction for aaron hernandez. he lost another sponsor. puma announced they were dropping their endorsement. in a statement they said it is the appropriate step to take. matt. all right.

stephanie gosk in massachusetts on this story. stephanie, thank you. lisa bloom is today's legal analyst. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> the police are looking for a guy name ernest wallace who is described as an accessory after the fact in connection to the murder of odin lloyd. what does that mean. >> he gave aid or assistance. maybe covered up evidence or destroyed evidence. >> they're describing him as potentially armed and dangerous. let's go back to 2012 and now this double homicide that perhaps -- and we should say, it's still a big question mark that aaron hernandez might be connected to. are you hearing anything from law enforcement that would indicate why they think he might be connected? >> the connection maybe that odin lloyd had information about this 2012 murder and he was killed in order to keep him silent about it. he is innocent until proven guilty. we don't know. it's an ongoing investigation.

but consider an nfl star as the potential serial killer. that's the idea behind the investigation. >> and if there is some connection he played the entirety of last season after being involved in the murder of two people. >> right. >> the bail hearing yesterday, any surprises for you? the defense attorney said this guy stayed in his house. he didn't attempt to flea. the case is circumstantial, bail denied anyway. >> almost every murder case is circumstantial. that doesn't mean it's not a strong case and when you have the judge from the bench saying it's a strong case, that's not a good sign from the defense. some say his own security cameras have incriminating evidence against him as well as other security cameras. i'm sure they would be looking at computers, blood, dna, and forensics and ballistics. >> he's a high profile individual in that area. >> it's always harder for law enforcement when they go after a celebrity or somebody with money. they put up a strong defense. you have to dot every "i," cross every "t." >> thank you so much. let's get a check of the weather
