cooling centers. they are made available during the summer's hottest days. this is certainly one of those. anthony, how long is this heat wave going to stick around? >> temperatures will top out 100 degrees. in fact, through tuesday is when we're expecting temperatures to top out at least near 100 degrees in the inland valleys. we have an excessive heat warning posted by the national weather service through tuesday as temperatures will be back to 95 to 110 during the warmest part of the day. this is dangerous heat. drink plenty of water. remember your children and your pets. always check the back seat. limit your time-outdoors to 30 minutes or less at a time. this is heat that kills. heat is the number one killer of weather-related deaths every single year. live more, 109. temperatures right now still running warm. 100 in concord. 77 in oakland.

73 in san francisco. temperatures are expected to cool as we head towards the fourth of july. that coming up in just a little while. >> anthony, thanks a lot. the heat on much of the bay area. nbc bay area kimberly terry live at great american with more on how people are trying to beat this heat. kimberly? >> take a look behind me. this is how they are beating the heat. people say in the last few minutes they will be able to enjoy this wading pool that has been packed all day. it's closing up soon. but it is also cooling off ever so slightly. the heat is expected to be just as intense if not hotter tomorrow as you heard anthony say. with all of this comes some precaution. >> i think people need to be prepared when they are out in the hot environment really the day before. a lot of people come into a park environment like this. they're really not prepared. they're excited about the day. they don't think about drinking

a lot of water. it takes time for the body to, you know, many acclimated to these environments. as hot as it is and as hot as it's going to get, it's really recommended that people prepare themselves. >> great american safety and first-aid manager says they get plenty of calls from heat-related illnesses throughout the day. it happens so quickly. he urges people to be very conscious of this. like he said, drink plenty of water and find shade if you feel like you're getting overheated. bells ringing in city hall. the city extended hours to marry same-sex couples. >> reporter: san francisco's civic center was a giant party today at the annual pride celebration got under way.

just across the street in san francisco city hall the real celebrations were taking place. >> i now pronounce you spouses for life. >> a day after a federal appeals court nullified prop 8, californians were in full swing. >> wanting for the real thing. >> and the real thing was taking place ever where you looked. the city mobilized staff and volunteers to create a marriage assembly line. >> we needed reinforcements. i needed to bring in deputy sheriffs who are working in our jails and other assignments to help us with managing the crowds here. >> city hall extended hours from 9:00 to 5:00 today and tomorrow to accommodate all the couples wanting to get hitched. >> we think a lot of folks have been waiting far too long. we're not going to be making people wait any longer. we're really happy to be here. >> some wore matching outfits.

some carried flowers. all said they were grateful to tie the knot with the state's blessing. >> our family has not been held equal with the other families in our neighborhood and our community and our state and certainly our country. >> some couples said they wanted to get married soon out of fear that opponents would make a legal attempt to block the marriages on monday. but for now it was a sea of i dos, with plans to do it again tomorrow. >> as we mentioned, san francisco will continue issuing licenses all weekend. but other areas will have to wait until monday, at least. alameda county issued licenses yesterday afternoon but did not perform any weddings. the office will open 8:30 monday morning. san ma tea, marin, napa counties, san mateo will start on monday. again, maybe not.

supporters of prop 8 filed an emergency petition with the u.s. supreme court claiming the 9th circuit court is prematuring allowing same-sex marriages. they have 25 days to ask the high court to re-hear the case. they released a statement this afternoon saying, people on both sides of this debate should agree that the courts must follow their own rules. this lawlessness weakens the legitimacy. take a live look at the castro. going to be a very busy next 24 hours. many said the decision nullifying prop 8 has quickly

negotiations between bart and two of its largest unions have fallen. now there's one day left between now and a crippling strike. both sides agree on one thing. the talks have been tense and they are far apart on key issues, including, salariesalar pensions, and worker safety. >> because the district has kept us waiting for the last 36 hours without a substantial proposal we no longer think that it is fair to keep the public not knowing if there is going to be a strike or no strike. so we will be out on the picket line on monday. >> bart is the nation's fifth largest rail system carrying 400,000 riders weekdays. a new concern for the city of san jose when it comes to new gang violence. the new recruits, girls. city leaders say it's time to

focus attention on this growing problem. nbc has more >> reporter: there was a time when elizabeth walked the streets with a pack. girls and guys who enjoy the gang lifestyle. >> i didn't really receive a lot of attention from my parents. >> the gang, she said, gave her the attention she was lacking. but it meant juvenile hall. >> i was young. i was not doing the right thing. >> a new study reports 1 in 10 gang members nationwide is a girl. in san jose, there's been an increase as much as 15% over the last decade. >> the increase that we are seeing is very alarming. >> the mayor said even if these cash-strapped times the city needs to invest more

gender-specific programs. >> i think if we can focus a little bit of funding and allocate our funding that we currently have to programs to girls participating in gang activities i think that would be very helpful. >> last week prosecutors ruled out suspects who they say are two dozen op actives of the prison gang. among them, were seven females. >> i had a wakeup call. i couldn't live the way i was living. >> elizabeth is a college student today. herta toos are virtually gone. she spends her free time talking to other girls, urging them not to follow in her path as a teenager. still ahead at 6:00, a program for foster kids. how bay area company is running the program without costing tax payers a penny. temperatures in the 80s at the coast, 100 inland.

the teen unemployment rate is triple the national average. for some teens not finding work can be catastrophic. as kris sanchez reports, they are force to go change that by helping youth find long-term employment without a single tax payers cent. >> i like being on my own. i spend a lot of time on the road. i've been all sorts of places all over california.

>> ian is happy to be driving the a tow truck working 60 to 65 hours a week, making the kind of money that allows him to pay rent instead of living in his car. he spent much of his childhood in foster care because his parents were abusive. >> i did not graduate from high school. i dropped out halfway through my senior year. i became homeless. i've been homeless actually up until i got this job. >> he got the job through teen force, a south bay nonprofit staffing agency which screens the teens, helps them with resumes and interviewing skills and pairs them with employers the teens might have thought were out of reach. >> we have a state license termite inspector. we have several young folks working in the mortgage industry and doing a great job there. >> team force set a goal of placing 100 foster youth into jobs within one year. through a partnership with the chamber of commerce, they're

going to make that goal and ahead of time. now they have something bigger in mind, and that is to change the entire system. >> nobody needs to become self-sufficient young adult faster than these people. we want to prove santa clara county, through the private sector businesses without any deposit funding, we want to prove we can make it happen here and be a model. >> ian is among the 275 young people team force has placed in three years. combined they have worked more than 70,000 hours and earned $700,000 in wages. and they have created relationships that work for the teen and their bosses. >> it makes me feel good that i helped them out. he's a nice person. it's nice to have a nice person working for you. >> he's also looking forward to going back to school and becoming a fireman some day, dreaming of a future which at one point did not seem possible. >> through finding steady work i

95 to 110 in our inland valleys. especially 30 minutes at a time. if you jog or walk the dog, do that in the morning or evening. in the afternoon hours it will be so unbearable. at the coast, temperatures aren't going to be too warm, at least not dangerously warm. that's the good news in all of this activity. very large area of high pressure under control. this is a little bit farther south and inland. typically warm for the desert southwest. palm springs, 118. las vegas, 114. phoenix, 115. all of this hot hair is headed our way in the next 24 hours. not going to cool off. temperatures in the 60s and 70s. even at the coast, half moon bay, 66. san francisco, 77 at 7:00 a.m. livermoor, temperatures to start the day 78 degrees.

your beach report, 80 in pacifica. half moon, 83 degrees. water temperature around 52 degrees. our warmest beach tomorrow by far santa cruz, 88 degrees. winds south 5 to 15. water temperature a little warmer at 54. everywhere else tomorrow, very hot. 82, san francisco. if you're headed for the parade remember the sunscreen. 100, redwood city. 107 in livermoore. temperatures will be the warmest tomorrow. gradual cooldown but not by. . heat effect until tuesday. temperatures still warm. 90 degrees for the fourth of july. even though we cool off it's a relatively speaking cool. we will be 90.

a battle is brewing between the state and federal government that can could determine whether restaurants can continue to serve shark fin soup. the state law set to go into effect monday will take the asian delicacy off the menu. that law would allow fisherman to bring the shark to land, cut off the fin and ship the fin out. it will be heard by the 9th circuit court of appeals in august. and a ban on plastic bags starting monday. san carlos adopted the plastic bag ban in late february on both businesses except restaurants. they decided the way to enforce it until july 1st to give retailers time to adjust to the
