good evening. i we begin with a breaking story. the clock ticking on union leaders to come up with a deal to avid a strike. a deadline less than six hours away. if a settlement is not reached, it could come to a hult tomorrow morning. the two sides are meeting right now. >> reporter: this meeting is likely the last hope to avoid a strike tomorrow. both sides are meeting inside this building on west grand avenue in oakland at this hour. the fact both sides are even in the same building is seen as

progress after talks broke down yesterday afternoon between the two sides and the chief negotiator for the union called a strike at that time extremely likely. but last night they presented a new proposal of an 8% raise over four years to mediators. that was e-mailed to union leaders. workers want a 15% raise over three years, plus a cost of living increase. >> we don't want to drag the passengers into this. it's not fair to the bay area. we want to get this done, close a deal tonight and prevent a strike. that's our main goal. >> district is pushing for a strike. we want a contract for our members. that's why we're at the table is and that's what we expect. >> reporter: the deadline to reach a deal is at 11:59 tonight. again, they are willing to extend that. no word from the union about whether they would also be willing to do that.

on top of this, commuters have to contend with transit also in. negotiations after their contract also expires. they are reporting only slight progress in negotiations with them. that's with transit which could also affect commuters tomorrow. kimberly tere, bay area news. just into the newsroom, a statement from the san francisco mayor. he's urging the two sides to reach a deal. l mayor says, quote, a strike that carries hundreds of thousands of people every day not only cause disruptions to riders who rely on the system to get to work and travel around the region, it would negatively impact our economy. those aren't the only stories making headlines this evening. a record-breaking crowd at this juror's pride parade in san francisco. it's been a historic weekend in more ways than one. same-sex marriage licenses will

continue. an emergency petition to stop them was denied. that news made this year's pride celebration even better. jean elle in san francisco. >> reporter: the music just ended and the celebration is beginning to wrap up. it's still wall to wall people out here. san francisco police say 1.5 million people joined this celebration, which is a record number for pride. it's the largest crowd ever and the first time same-sex couples can head into city hall and get married as well. ceremonies are over for the day, but there's a vip reception happening inside city hall. newlyweds got in with a marriage license. it's the talk of the celebration here at pacific center and parade route. lots of statements being made about the end of prop 8. after years of fighting, it's exciting to have the right to marry the person they love. >> liberty and justice for all.

>> pledge of allegiance, that's me too. >> reporter: video of the crowd from above gives you an idea of how many people are here. walking around is slow going and driving is a crawl around the civic center. it's a warm, sunny day and we have seen some people getting medical attention, but san francisco police say there are no major incidents to report. so pride organizers say it's been a great day made extra special by the end of prop 8. while this official party is wrapping up, the celebrations will continue tonight all over san francisco. live in san francisco, nbc bay area news. since friday the city of san francisco has been busy issuing marriage licenses. the total was 542. 412 of those licenses have already been recorded. that process will resume tomorrow morning. counties all across the bay

area will start issuing marriage licenses tomorrow for same-sex couples. they are evening offering a express service. couples can head to city hall to purchase a license to have their ceremony performed at one of the service windows. it it costs $120 for most services. same-sex marriage has just overcome another hurdle. actually that was justice kennedy issuing that. prop 8 supporters petitioned kennedy yesterday claiming the court is prematurely allowing same-sex marriage licenses in the state. opponents have 25 days after the high court to rehear the case. >> essentially what the court has done is they have dragged we the people from behind the wheel of this republic and they have carjacked the nation. >> edi windsor was welcomed as a

hero at the gay pride parade in new york today. we'll have complete coverage of the ruling and aftermath and along with the pride celebration at 11:00. all day at nbcbayarea.com. happening now in the south bay, crews were at the scene of a brush fire. fire broke out around 5:00 at interstate 280 and highway 87. firefighters got it under control. this is reminder of how hot and dry it is out there. especially with the 4th of july coming up. let's bring in rob mayeda who is tracking the weather. >> still seeing temperatures soar into the 90s. even e though parts of the bay area running a little cooler than yesterday at the same time. we had a stronger sea breeze. today 97 in fairfield. leading to cooling versus 24

hours ago. wind speed bringing the air slightly into fair field. here's the headline for tomorrow. declaring a flex alert during the day tomorrow through 6:00. peak demand comes close to matching supply of energy reserves. we have the heat warning for tuesday. increased risk for fire danger not just from the heat but another source here. mid-level moisture out of southern california could increase the risk for dry lightning. so all three things we're watching very closely. temperatures actually warming up a few more degrees early in the week. that's coming up in the seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks a lot. it seems like everyone has the same idea today. what a great day to go to the beach. especially inland thinking about cooling off. lots of traffic headed to the beach in marine county. at one point it got so crowded that the recreation area tweeted that the parking lot was full. they recommended people to go to

ocean beach in san francisco. they also warned that your beach could get crowd ed too. about 1,500 workers are going on strike at midnight tonight. they are upset over a 10% pay cut. police, fire and other emergency service workers will not be affected. the strike will impact parking enforce m, street sweeping, head start and senior centers. the city says some services will be available online. this is the first general strike since 146. another city on the e peninsula is set to join the ban on plastic bags. tomorrow st. carlos shoppers will have to bring their own bags. they adopted the bag in february on most businesses. they decided to enforce the ban on july 1st to get used to the change. retailers can offer a paper bag for a minimum of 10 cents each. officials say reusable bags are

we have breaking news. an apparent double drowning. cal fire received several calls about people in the water and needed help. rescuers arrived and found two women dead. two men were stranded on a rock. we're going to follow this. i talked to my editor a moment ago. there's no high surf advisory anywhere in santa cruz county and suggesting it could be something like a rogue wave coming in and taking these people by surprise. two women dead and a number of people rescued. we're going to keep you posted on this and bring you information as it becomes available. police are investigating the city's second homicide of the weekend. investigators say a 54-year-old man was stabbed to death. it happened about 3:00 this morning. police found him dead with multiple stab wounds. no arrests have been made.

police are still working on a shooting that happened yesterday where a man was shot twice in two separate incidents within 24 hours. the 42-year-old died after being shot in the head saturday morning on the porch of his apartment. the same man was shot in the leg and back on friday morning about 11:00. he was uncooperative with officers who were investigating trying to figure out who shot him and now he's been shot again and killed. the fireworks warehouse goes up in flames today. an employee reported hearing fireworks going off. firefighters tried to bring it under control. officials decided to let it burn itself out. the owner says he's relieved no one was hurt. >> i've been in the business 40 years and never had a fire like this. this is all new to me. as long as my people are safe and no one is harmed, the rest

president obama looked to the past and the future during the stop in south africa today. he says the united states is a big part of that continent's future. kristen welker has more from cape town. >> reporter: president obama delivered the keynote speech of his trip earlier today at the university of cape town. and his message was really to challenge the next generation of

south africans to move their country forward. to do that he invoked the name of nelson mandela and robert kennedy who delivered an historic speech in 1966 speaking out against apar tie. >> less than 50 years later, an african-american president might address an integrated audience at south africa's oldest university. that's this same university would have conferred an honorary degree to a president nelson mandela. would have seemed impossible. >> reporter: the president's big announcement today that the united states will be partnering with six african nations to double access to electrical power in africa over the next decade. >> i'm calling for america to up our game when it comes to africa. we're bringing together business leaders from america and africa to deepen our engagement.

>> reporter: the president talked ab the importance of investing in things like security, food security and health as well as democracy, thriving democracy, civil society. president obama making the point that he wants to see the u.s.'s relationship with africa shift from one that's based on aid to one that is more mutually beneficial. the last stop will be in tanzania. record-breaking heat in the southwest this weekend caused cancellations of several flights out of phoenix yesterday. temperatures hit a record of 119 degrees. u.s. airways cancelled 18 flights. high temperatures can affect performance during takeoff and landings so they don't fly them. if they are canceling flights in phoenix, you know it's hot. rob mayeda is here to talk about the heat in our area. >> we're getting a taste of arizona over the last couple days. although the sea breeze fired up and that led to temperatures

dropping. 70 in san francisco today. 88 for a high in san jose. 5 to 10 degrees warmer tomorrow. you can see the valley, 97 degrees. so the sea breeze influence not felt as further inland. we still have 100 degrees in fairfield. there's 106 and 101 feels much cooler. at least statistically speaking it was a bit cooler inland. 95 degrees in livermore. san jose down to 82 degrees. 24-hour temperature change as more of that marine layer came in. this pattern is going to flip tomorrow 5 to 10 degrees of warming. there you see winds onshore. you see how dry it is. fire danger increasing as the air continues to dry out. heat warnings to east bay. santa clara valley towards gill roy. that won't change for tuesday. likely not through wednesday. low clouds start to go away during the day tomorrow.

that's a sign that high pressure is strengthening again. also watching moisture coming up out of the the south. that's the problem with the dry air below and the moisture increasing above. sometimes we get. these high elevation thunderstorms that drop lightning but no rain drops. this pattern will have to be watched for fire danger. in the meantime, this heat wave is going to last longer now through thursday. friday the ridge will start to flatten out and encourage a stronger sea breeze. stronger than today. towards next weekend, that will lead to more widespread cooling. eventually 60s overnight. i'm guessing the air-conditioning is still going to be running in the valley locations with temperatures in some spots near 70. look at these highs. 88 degrees in san jose. 98 degrees tomorrow. morgan hill and gillroy approaching 105. these numbers looking like

saturday. 80s into san francisco. 90s in the north bay. all signs show monday into tuesday is probably the hottest stretch of what has beenhis heat wave. wednesday still looks hot but the change will take place on thursday. starting off with the coast, you see the temperature drop for 4th of july. that's going to lead to more significant cooling. this is a long-lasting heat wave. tuesday is not out of the question to e see some places getting close to 110 degrees. fairfield and livermore, that's a possibility on tuesday. so very hot weather headed our way. >> thank you very much. when we come back, a very, very unusual find in texas.

there's nothing unusual about a lost pet except in this case when a texas man found a wall la by outside his front door. he called police. they didn't know what to do so they contacted animal control. it it belonged to a family down the street and said the animal wept missing after their fence was ripped open. the family did not break any laws. >> as far as we know, we don't have anything in our city ordinance that says you can't
