standing alongside bart workers this afternoon with a message. >> i'm kind of getting tired of he said, she said, we need to get the trains rolling. >> reporter: that message is something that bart riders who have been inconvenienced for two days want to hear. >> it's causing a conflict for 400,000 plus people, but i can't really blame anybody, because it's everybody trying to get what they think they fatherly deserve. >> reporter: bart workers want better wangs, benefits, and they are concerned about safety. meanwhile, ac transit buses in oakland heading to san francisco were packed with people even before it arrived to pick them up at 20th and broadway. >> they keep changing the time, adding more minutes every time. it's ridiculous. it's hot out and everything. everybody's waiting. >> you ain't got no choice. either you go to work or you don't. you got to earn your money. you got to pay your bills. >> reporter: the same frustration is happening across

the bay. >> it's inconvenient. we thought about getting a reb tal car, but we thought twice knowing public transportation is so good. now maybe we should have gone the other way around. >> reporter: as bart riders deal with transportation woes others wonder why they are not at the bargaining table. >> i've heard some saying it's the workers, but it's the management who didn't want to come to the table. and i feel ike people need o do what they need to do. >> reporter: like today, they announced they will start talking again. >> we are very relieved that we get to go back anabar began. our expk station is that we will receive a substantially different offer from bart management than what we've seen since last sunday at 8:00. >> reporter: so negotiations are set to begin moments from now. it seems as though they've found what room they'll go into. we have no idea how long they

will negotiate tonight. and we have no idea if a resolution to this strike will take place tonight. of course we'll have an update on this story coming up at 11:00 tonight. reporting live in oakland, i'm cheryl heard. nbc bay area news. also happening now, as fans are fighting traffic on880, trying to get to the coliseum to see them play the cubs. there's more traffic as usual because there's no bart service. >> reporter: good evening. this is not a sold-out game, but they're expecting about 18,000 fans tonight. you can see behind me, the parking lot is beginning to fill up as fans continue to arrive. we've been here since about 3:30 and i can tell you that many fans decided to get here early. just down the brock there's a sight you would never otherwise see on a night like tonight. the bart station is a ghost

town. the walk over would usually be streaming with people right about now, but it is empty. the a's put out a statement suggesting that people carpool and it seems that many people are heeding that advice. >> a lot of people trying to get home. it's a holiday week. but there's still plenty of traffic. we left in a little extra time. >> we left around 3:30 and got over here and probably less than an hour or so. >> reporter: again, about 18,000 fans are expecksed at tonight's game which starts at 7:05. maximum chas at this is 30,000. back here live you can see fans continue to arrive. there is free parking for most home games on tuesdays as part of a promotion called chevy tree parking tuesdays. unfortunately for fans that does not apply to a handful of premium games, and that includes

to board san francisco bay ferries. in addition to increased ridership, some ferries were delayed by commercial shipping. they were expected to carey 18,000 passengers. >> we've had a number of vessels at capacity. the next vesal is either there or shortly thereafter coming. >> reporter: the company said it was rung 11 ferries, up from its normal eight. they can carey 149 to 700 passengers. so with bart down and buses full, commuters are left with nothing to do but settle in and enjoy the view. >> it's a beautiful view, you know, the bay, the bridge. it was a serene experience in a way. >> reporter: for some, the scenery didn't seem to pass fast enough. >> if you're in a hurry,

ton 105. was it hot enough for the hottest in july? not quite. 103 in san francisco. didn't get near to that today. it is dangerous heat at that we are dealing w by 10:00 we are expecting mid to low 70s in the south and east bay. and even for tomorrow morning, looks like those of you in the tri valley are going to have a mild start. shorts to get the day started. and short sleeves. temperatures could be in the upper 70s at 7:00 tomorrow. that's a huge indication that it will be hot. excessive heat warping, most critical for the east counties. alameda, contra costa counties. remember to drink plenty of water. we cannot stress that enough. coming up, we'll have details on the iet anything strikes across tahoe. we'll see you shortly. we talked about the heat in the

interview. let's turn things over to our meteorologist and check on our temperatures. we've heard there were power out ands. >> this heat not going anywhere, this huge dome of pressure responsible for this hot, hot air across arizona, increasing their fire danger, increasing our fire danger. we thought we'd show you some of the hottest temperatures. that livermore 105. santa at that rhesa, 101. that 106 in the valley. you're out in the sun, and it probably felt like 110. your car thermometers probably read about 110 in the east bay. we had concord at 104. campbell, 100, also lafayette at 98 degrees. now here's the good news right now. the winds are not classic offshore coming out of the east like when we had the oakland

hills fire. that's when we have our worst fire winds with us. right now we're seeing that slight onshore winds, light 10 to 20 miles an hour. that is helping to increase the humidity. that's a shred of good news. and where the winds are the strongest, up against the coastline. that's where we're seeing the cooling. san francisco at 76, san mateo. and 93 still in livermore. let's get you outside to the hd camera. you can see clear skies in san jose. we had the haze and moderate air equality. but with the onshore flow it's not too bad. and from the golden gate bridge weigh do have that fog that's rolling in across right now downtown san francisco. and that's going to help give us some slight cooling as we head into tomorrow's forecast. what you're going to find here is that the coast is going to stay cool. temperatures in the 60s by the bay.

11:00 we're going to see temperatures in the 70s. another warm start for the south bay and the north bay. but we're going to get some cooling. i also wanted to bring your attention to the subtropical moisture moving up from the south. it is producing lightning strikes across lake tahoe. right now our chance of getting any kind of lightning tonight is on the low side. the way this moisture is moving up the sierra, most of it looks to miss us here as we head throughout friday's forecast. that's why we're only keeping a slight chance of maybe a stray lightning strike as we head through wednesday, thursday, and friday. one lightning strike could spark some fires. temperatures will be going down for us. but as we head through friday, we'll see 80s inland and 60s at the coastline. plenty of triple digits continue. i'll have more on that seven day forecast coming up.

check it out. not moving. the driver of a big rig tried to fit through a lane, and as you can see, got stuck. this all happened during the morning's commute. bridge officials say there were minor delays caused by the accident. luckily no one was hurt, but the toll p plaza was a bit damaged. the front axle of the truck snap. a heavy-duty tow truck was called in to try to remove the big rig. it's silenced. the tallest and noisiest roller

coaster, the gold striker, it's been shut down. several nearby businesses right there in santa clara have been complaining about the excessive noise. the thrill of the ride causes screaming passengers to exceed the city noise standard. so not necessarily the ride, but it's people screaming on the ride. the tunnel, i should say a tunnel is now being built over the roller coaster's noisiest point to help muffle the sound. a major announce. by the obama administration. the key provision of the affordable care act is being delayed until 2015. an update on the bart strike as both sides return to the bargaining table. the company of california's highways are abysmal. so says a new report. i'll have that plus what you can do to mitigate the damage, coming up.

impacting hundreds of thousands of commuters, again, another day of people stuck in traffic. people who rely on bart being forced to find other ways to get around. showing you a live look at the san mateo bridge. eastbound traffic is not as bad. now a look at 880 in fremont. this is pretty light for fremont. it's a little slow going. and north of there, oakland traffic, again, not too bad, considering. it is moving in both directions. some of these drivers most likely making their way to the coliseum. the game starts at 7:05. if you think the bay area commute is rough, it's not your imagination. only three states rank lower than california when it comes to highway conditions. >> we'll have more with what you can do about it. >> reporter: well, bad roads can
