"today in the bay's" christie smith with the latest details. they had a long one last night. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, jon. unfortunately you'll have to find another way to get to work this morning. and that's because the b.a.r.t. trains still aren't rolling but there is good news. there is progress. b.a.r.t. negotiations went on for hours overnight. they just left the building here in oakland before 3:00 in the

morning, when members of seiu, representing mechanics and maintenance staff, streamed out of the building. people representing groups arrived close to nine hours earlier. the labor secretary urged all parties to get back to the table with new mediators. one union rep says new faces involved could really help. sticking point, still raises, health care, pension contribution but mounting pressure from the 400,000 riders each day of b.a.r.t. who have been in gridlock on alternate forms of transportation since monday. here what happens one union rep was able to tell us on our way out. >> we made some progress this evening and as you can see, it's rather late now and we've decided we'll make more progress if we get some sleep. we worked very hard together both parties along with very fine mediators who have been assigned by the governor's office and we're -- we've been asked not to speak to the press

other than to make that single comment. so thank you for your coverage. i wish you all a very good night. >> reporter: that was good enough, it was something. earlier a b.a.r.t. spokesperson said resuming talks certainly a good sign. they broke off late sunday. but that they were still close to 8% in term of compensation. the union closer to 21%. the union representing b.a.r.t. managers though, good news, appears to have reached a tentative agreement, not so far b.a.r.t.'s two largest unions. they will be meeting again here at oakland 1:00. christie smith "today in the bay." mike inouye is off this morning. anthony slaughter, delighted that he came in. >> thank you. delighted to be here. >> he's helping us keep an eye on the commute. it's backed up this morning. >> it is. surprising because just a couple days ago, even yesterday, things were not this active. yesterday around this time, bay bridge lights were getting turned on and i wouldn't be surprised if that will happen

today because we're starting to see the stack up at the bay bridge approach. and the good news in all of this, we're not tracking major accidents approaching the bay bridge. we do have an accident that is just occurred in the south bay and that's on the 880 northbound. if we can flip over to traffic maps i can show you that. that's causing a bit of a slowdown as you approach 101 and 880 exchange. not impending traffic too much right now. >> with no b.a.r.t. trains running out there, b.a.r.t. has brought in charter buses again to try to get people to work in san francisco. but they've been so popular, the buses filled up before the commute was even over. marla tellez live at west oakland b.a.r.t. station. last time we checked in with you one person was in line waiting for a ride. any more commuters now? >> reporter: yes, within the last 60 seconds, the first chartered bus for san francisco left and there were 25 people on that bus. now there are no commuters in line and there's about eight buses i think i've counted out

here waiting for commuters to arrive. i talked to a person who worked with b.a.r.t. and tell me that 51 people have left the el cerrito station, still under 100 commuters, still early on wednesday morning commute. west oakland hub is the hub for this chartered bus service. if you can't make it here directly you can go to one of four other east bay stations and then take a bus here and then take noon san francisco. that's how it works. those stations are fremont, el cerrito, walnut creek and dublin/pleasanton. now yesterday, though, the buss of service hit a serious sflag. so many commuters that the service from the stations stopped running more than an hour early. supposed to run until 8:00 a.m. but had to be shut down before 7:00 a.m. i have calls into b.a.r.t. this morning to see how they plan to remedy that today. i am waiting to hear back. bottom line, encouraged to get to west oakland or feeder stations as early as you can. i spoke to one woman who took

off. she's on the first bus into san francisco. she says, the bus service has worked well for her but keep in mind she's getting up three hours earlier than typically does. typically takes a train into san francisco at 7:00 a.m. she gets up at 3:30 to catch the first bus every day at 5:00 a.m. into san francisco. in west oakland b.a.r.t. station here runs buss into the city through 9:00 a.m. live in oakland, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. with no b.a.r.t. service, a lot more people are hitting the roads to get to work in the morning. that's causing a lot of headaches. with more than normal traffic on the freeways. bob redell is on the move. a man on the move going along highway 4. bob, it's early, 5:05. how's traffic now? >> reporter: good morning to you. we're eastbound highway 4 heading towards through pittsburg, headed to antioch. we want to get to antioch, turn around, make the commute into san francisco. right now, if you're looking

down the road, looking eastbound, the headlights coming toward us in the opposite direction are westbound 4 and if you look out there into the distance a bit, at least i can tell you from what i'm seeing here, there is already a lot of traffic out here in the morning. it's normal amount on a wednesday morning, hard to tell. but i can tell you at 5:00, here we are, you know two hours before it really gets heavy. already seeing a good amount of cars out there. so our plan as i mentioned go to antioch, do a turnaround, take westbound 4, 242, 680, 24 goes to caldecott, hit the maze, get on the bay bridge, and try to time that commute for you. of course with the b.a.r.t. strike going on, we're going to try to figure out if there's more people getting up earlier and therefore putting more congestion on the roads. but keep in mind, this is the day before a holiday, the fourth of july. we'll see if it maybe have a

"the san francisco chronicle" telling the san francisco concal the two suspects about to order food but ran into the restaurant's freezer because they felt threatened by another person. two employees followed them, went back to the freezer to see

"today in the bay's" christie smith live in oakland with the latest on the ongoing negotiations. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. i wish i could tell you that a deal had been reached. your commute would be easy and trains would be rolling again for the first time since sunday but unfortunately that's not the case. what i can tell you, though, is that negotiators were here until 3:00 in the morning. this is the caltrans building in downtown oakland. that's where b.a.r.t.'s two largest unions met with b.a.r.t. and negotiators, both sides walked out after sitting down for more than eight hours. governor brown called in two of state's top mediators to get in on this as pressure is mounting to get trains rolling for the fourth of july. you but also for 400,000 riders

"today in the bay's" marla tellez wive in the west oakland b.a.r.t. station where we assume riders are getting out early to guarantee a ride into san francisco. good morning. >> reporter: jon good morning. three buses have tang out west oakland bound for france. behind me now, a line of people who just arrived at west oakland from one of the feeder stations. these people came from walnut creek. now they're on their second leg of their trip into san francisco. i talked to some of them a second ago. most of the passengers, they're frustrated with b.a.r.t., with the negotiations. they want b.a.r.t. trains up and running again. i just got updated numbers from a b.a.r.t. employee managing the

stop. there are a total of almost 80 chartered buses now taking would-be b.a.r.t. passengers into san francisco. when this all started monday he says they started with 56 buses. so the demand has been overwhelming. he says yesterday the buses carried some 5800 passengers into the city. again, nothing, though, compared to the 400,000 daily commuters b.a.r.t. typically carries. all of the passengers i've talked to they just tell me they cannot wait for b.a.r.t. trains to start running again. >> i was normally drive but it's bettor catch b.a.r.t. it more convenience to catch b.a.r.t. i would say -- >> everybody's frustrated, ready to move on with our lives. >> reporter: the way it works, come directly here no the west oakland b.a.r.t. station or to one of the feeder stations to get a bus. those stations are fremont, dublin/pleasanton, el cerrito and walnut creek. walnut creek is the most popular

station. bus service stops there an hour early yesterday morning because they couldn't meet the demands to overcome that today, b.a.r.t. has added ten more buses to the walnut creek station. you can get a bus at one of the stations through 8:00 a.m. again, you will then be routed here to west oakland and then taken into san francisco. the chartered buses here, wrapped around the corner here at b.a.r.t. station. they run into the city until 9:00. live in oakland, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> 5:35. bay area drivers are feeling that squeeze. more commuters are heading behind the wheel because of this strike. we've seen it all morning long. westbound highway 4 see how long it takes to get from here into the city, into sf. a slow start. we're not at lone tree way yet. looks like going around 15 miles an hour. is this typical for a wednesday morning? perhaps. the volume is what is different. i think -- i believe it's earlier in the morning, it's 5:36 right now. typically i don't think we see this back up until closer to the 6:00 hour. so you probably are seeing effects of the b.a.r.t. strike. our splan westbound highway 4, 242, 680 south, 24 do caldecott and on to the maze, the bay bridge into sf. hearing anthony tell us he has seen a backup at the maze, metering lights on and backup at caldecott, i highly doubt -- well my guess it will take us longer than an hour and a half. by the time you see me at the

end of the show, 6:46, we'll even be at the maze. that's the point, a sense, a general sense what the road conditions like east bay commute into sf. right now look looking good. live here in antioch, stuck on westbound highway 4, bob redell "today in the bay." >> thanks so much. last time b.a.r.t. workers walked off the job it was back in 1997. that's when hundreds of thousands of workers had to rely on phones and word of mouth to figure out how to get to where they were going. >> old school. business and tech reporter scott mcgrew joining us now. compared to 997 this time around it's a different story. >> they used to hitchhike across the bay in '97, now ride share. that's the same thing. a number of absent services will get you a ride into or around the city. lots of people trying some of these for the first time. lift side car, they're all pretty much the same. private drivers pick you up, where you want to go like a

taxicab. these have been around several years but getting extra attention. huber is fancier. if you never tried it, it's an app that goes on your phone. running on my phone. where the uber town cars are. you have to click one, pick you up. i'm on a street corner in, say, san francisco, driver can be to me inside of what is that six minutes. the app will show you the name and the picture of the driver who is coming to get you. it is costlier but you are going to go to work in a black town car. so that's not bad. i used it for giants games outside the b.a.r.t. strike. instead of paying 20, 30 bucks the at&t you pay two bucks an hour at fifth and mission and uber your way over. >> he used it forll emmy awards. >> instead of paying 50 at the hotel. >> showed up in the big black car. >> big smooth is what we call him.
