. good morning to you. happy independence day. thank for joining us. >> good morning, everybody. yes, a lot of people do have the day off today. but do not plan on using b.a.r.t. to get around. union workers still on strike this morning after a second day of contract talks ends with no deal. christie smith live right now in oakland with the transit option that you will have on this fourth of july holiday. happy fourth of july, christie. >> reporter: same to you. you know, i have to tell you, i'm see something of the exact same union workers that i saw on the first day when this strike started on monday. i spoke with a couple of them a couple of minutes ago and they are telling me that they are hanging in there but out here since 4:00 this morning. b.a.r.t. issuing an apology for this strike. sort of. pointing a finger at the same time. saying we are sorry for the acti actions. but caused such a tremendous disruption to the people of the bay area. this coming ten hours after talks between b.a.r.t. and striking unions ended again

without a deal. we are now on day four. the issues have been salary, pension and benefit contributions which is what commuters across the bay area waiting in long lines looking for other ways to get the work. they are frustrated. didn't share much about what is talking. some people outside the buildings where talks are going on said they would do the job. >> we made progress yesterday and hope to continue progress today. >> get paid well and other people out there that would be willing to do the same thing and contributes to their pension. >> b.a.r.t. has been running a bus service through all of this and today limited because of the fourth of july. same five stations, though. again, it is limited. it is on the hour starting at 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and then again in the evening from 4:00 to 6:00. again, on the hour. plan ahead for that.

good morning. want to start in san rafael. eddie money, waited so long. that's going to be a good time out will. so much happening across the bay area. look at this. this morning, we are waking up with plenty of mid-level moisture and clouds overhead. and that radar is still rather active. thunderstorms still coming down. clear lake, ukiah region. yachtville and you can hear me right now, make sure you are ready in the next 15 minutes. you are going to get strong storms overhead. this is the overall employee. giving you an idea. clockwise rotation, high pressure moves to the north today. porous, that drive in more of that moisture. we are talking about the potential for strong mountain thunderstorms later on this evening. i'm really watching this area right here. western facing slopes surrounding san jose. also the east bay hills and you also have that chance up in the north bay. that will continue as we head throughout tonight. by 9:00 p.m., though, once those fireworks start to light up the sky, all that activity is slated

of king road in mayberry. unclear how bad the collision was. we are waiting to hear back from dispatchers and we will update you when we have more information. grief counselors are on hand at a kids camp near yosemite after a fallen tree kills a camp counselor. this happened at camp tawonga. kids at that camp were inside the dining hall and eating breck past when the tree suddenly came crashing down outside of the window. annais rittenberg was killed during that tree fall. rittenberg worked at the campus radio station kzfc where she hosted a two-hour world music show. her station manager says that the radio station is planning to hold a special tribute for her very soon. her fellow deejays will be playing world music in her honor as well as air clips from her show. >> 6:11.

overnight fire in san jose. this happened on north king road near mayberry. firefighters still investigating the cause. new this morning, live pictures from tahrir square to show you where the crowd continues to grow. celebrating the country's new leader. chief justice who was sworn in just moments ago. after the overnight removal of president morsi. the egyptian military suspended the islamist drafted constitution calling for a new elections and the installment of a temporary civilian government. you can hear the crowd. they are loud. in the u.s., president obama called an emergency meeting with his national security team saying in a statement that he's deeply concerned. the state closed the u.s. embassy department in cairo and urging all nonessential staff and americans in egypt to go home. >> we are clearly concerned about the violence on the ground. we are concerned about the fact that this is an extremely tense and fast-moving situation. >> the u.s. is also reviewing

$1.5 billion in aid to egypt. we will learn more about the incoming interim president from tracie potts. well-wishners south africa right now keeping vigil outside of the hospital where former president nelson mandela has been for nearly a month. the 94-year-old remains in critical but stable condition. he has been in that hospital since early june. suffering with a recurring lung infection. lot of people, as you can see there, leaving flowers and messages and other tributes outside of that hospital. some are saying that they remain hopeful he will be recovering while others simply are hoping for the leader's comfort. 6:16. bolivia's president says he is outraged by a report edward snowden hitched a right on the presidential airplane in moscow. morales returned to bolivia yesterday to a warm reception from his supporters. morales 'plane was returning from russia tuesday when it was forced to land in austria because friends in portugal

6:19 in the morning. something else we don't typically get in the bay area. showers and thunderstorms. especially not to the magnitude. look at all of this lightning. well over 120 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes this morning. up in sonoma county. a lot of the activity starting to wind down and race to the central valley. we will have a lot of the low-level moisture hanging around throughout the day. we will keep that chance for showers and thunderstorms running. very slight. we want to make sure you are aware of that. whenever you do hear that thunder, yeah, comes with dangerous situation. head on indoors. 102 degrees in livermore. 93 degrees today in san jose. that's hot. that's a hot way to spend the fourth of july in livermore. you know what that will translate to tonight? comfortable conditions out will. you are bogey to get some of the best weather in the east bay tonight. holding on to the 70s. mild conditions. and we have been talking about all morning long how it is going to be nice and clear out there in san francisco.

ousted president morsi as of this morning. hay said s said to be under military control in an undisclo location. mansour was sworn in this morning. he was a top judge in the country until this morning. and is dashes lynn a government between what will become a new democratic government once elections are set. president obama says that his number one goal is for a democratically elected government to sit in cairo and pulled together the national security team to talk about what the u.s.'s response is going to be. his other big concern that supporters of president morsi and lot of them still out there, some of them believed to be armed, that they get a fair say as long as they are not violent. he's urging the military not to round them up and arrest them. lot going on still and demonstrations happening here in washington. the u.s. government tries to figure out what its response will be. >> certainly one to watch.

thank you. right now good news for visitors out to new york. yes. lady liberty, statue of liberty back open to the public for the first time since superstorm sandy. the first votes bringing tourists to liberty -- boats bringing tourists to liberty island less an hour ago. reservations for tours are already booked throughout next week. >> here in the bay area, you can celebrate the fourth of july while raising money for troops overseas. at 1:00 today, the south bay blue star moms will hold a special fund-raising barbecue. it is just a $10 donation and you can get a barbecue plate and cocktails and any money raise willed help fund the blue star moms which put together great care packages for the troops supporting the families of the service men and women that are injured or killed in the line of duty. it is 6:34 now. that's the greatest thing going on out there with the moms.

christina loren, hot out there but imagine a lot of people will be trying to be out enjoying it. >> yes. one of those days where we all want to get out there to see the fireworks. that means we will be exposed to the elements. this year is going to be pretty nice. look at this. this morning, we are starting out in san rafael with mid-level clouds and had strong thunderstorms. we show you the general nature of the storms over the past couple of hours. we are in the 60s and 70s now. it is definitely warm enough for those thunderstorms. look at all of this lightning. like i said before, over 120 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes in northwestern sonoma county earlier today. look at what happened. all of that activity falls apart. once you lose this enhancement once the showers and thunderstorms and over the mountains, yes, they lose that energy. so, yes. we are going to see more of this today. very interesting weather. also getting light showers now. even more so down around the western facing slopes around san jose and you can see these pockets starting to move onshore along the pen lanes. we will be tracking showers

b.a.r.t. and union workers. two sides held talks late into the night but once again left without a resolution. and that means b.a.r.t. workers are on strike for a fourth day now and you may have to rethink your travel plans if you have today off. christie smith live at the lake merit b.a.r.t. station and joins us now with the latest. good morning. >> good morning to you. happy fourth of july. yeah. i wish i had better news for you. if you are just getting up, well, the trains are not running this morning. that means if you do have to go to work you have to find another way to get there. striking union workers back on the picket lines started at 4:00 this morning. and as we have been saying all along commuters' patience wearing out. consider this. if you are home barbecuing enjoying the day off, b.a.r.t. and union negotiators will be back inside the caltrans building at the bargaining table. after ten hours of talk yesterday ended after 11:00 p.m. but still no agreement. this is now the fourth day of the strike. key sticking points all along, salary, pension and benefits

contributions. b.a.r.t. wants workers to give more to the pensions and pay, more for health care. unions say that their efforts are actually contributing to record ridership so they deserve a raise. in the middle of all of this, 400,000 daily riders have been stuck in traffic and long lines trying to get around. those say didn't say much but a man that would love a b.a.r.t. job sure did. >> all i can say is we made progress yesterday and hope to con progress today. >> they get paid well and other people out there, like myself, that would be willing to do the same thing and contribute to their pension. >> b.a.r.t. is running a limited bus service today. five stations they have been doing all week. it is limited. on the hour starting at 6:00 and goes until 8:00. then in the evening from 4:00 to

>> less an block away from that fire we are getting word from firefighters a bicyclist was hit by a car. this happened at the intersection of king road and mayberry. unclear at this hour how bad that collision actually was or whether the bike rider suffered any major injuries. we are waiting right now to hear back from dispatchers and we will, of course, update you when we have more information. >> this is an odd thing to warn you about this morning. san francisco police say people in the twin peaks and diamond heights neighborhoods should keep an eye out for poisonous meatballs. the warning comes after a dog ate a cooked meatball found in the area of crestline and burnett street. when the dog and owner returned from their walk, the dog became sick. that's when neighbors and the owner went back and found more discarded meatballs. police say that the meatballs appear to be poisoned and investigators are running tests to determine what exact sly in them. >> followup for you now. the man accused of killing two wing stop employees in oakland earlier this week will face

charges tomorrow. police say that jermaine girley is being held without bond. me and another man allegedly entered the wing stop late tuesday might when there was an encounter with somebody there. officials say that the two ran to the back of the restaurant and then hid in a freezer. when the two employees went to investigate what was going on, had both were shot to death. police say they are still looking for the second man but at this point will not say if he's in fact, a suspect. >> 6:55. family of a san jose woman that died in a storm accident at willow glen last month filed a lawsuit. accusing two drivers of being distracted behind the wheel. the woman was riding her bike to work on june 13 when a delivery truck and dump truck collided at the intersection. that delivery truck roll order top of the woman pinning her underneath. the families now filed a lawsuit claiming both drivers were distracted by their cell phones at the time of the crash. we now know who will be

representing major league baseball in the antitrust lawsuit filed by the city of san jose. the league has hired john kecker. list of high-profile clients include google and lance armstrong. the hiring sets up a showdown between kecker and another heavyweight, joe to lead san san jo jose's case. the city accusing the league of violating federal laws by blocking the efforts on move down to the south bay. california's biggest junior college faces an uncertain future this morning. city colleges san francisco will lose its accreditation in july of next year. the accrediting commission for community and junior colleges said that they did not do enough to fix financial and educational deficiencies. the school will appeal the decision. in the campus will remain open and at the time acredited. >> time is 6:56.
