thanks for joining us. we get applause from over there on a friday. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. the vatican now confirms pope francis has cleared the way for late pope john paul ii for sainthood. a pope must have two miracles attributed to him and this week the committee decided to credit the late pope with curing a woman of severe brain injury in costa rica. john paul ii is also believed to have miraculously healed a nun with parkinson's disease. >> right here at home, this is far short of a miracle, but finally good news for bay area commuters. b.a.r.t. service will be back on later today. striking union members agreeing to temporarily lift the strike while they work on a brand new contract with management. christie smith is live with more details on what this all means for riders around the bay area. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. commuters are telling us they heard this on their way in this

5:03 am
freeways, the inconvenience of it all. we did hear from b.a.r.t. and the unions. i spoke with a rider who says he hopes he isn't waiting for buses again in 30 days. >> well, i don't know if -- i mean they're negotiating, but they're such polar opposites so it's hard to know if 30 days and in 30 days we're back in the same situation. >> and i want to tell the riders that we deeply regret the inconvenience that they have been caused and we want to express our commitment to do everything we know how to achieve a fair agreement for the workers in our two unions. and with that, we have a lot of work left to do. we stand together tonight and we expect to be standing together with a fair contract by the end of august the 4th. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. not running yet this morning because it takes about 12 hours to get those trains up and running again. charter buses still in effect today from the five stations that they have been, el se

to the newspaper. the french government records e-mail data, facebook access, web browsing habits of its own citizens in violation of french law. now, jon and laura, there are a lot of spy accusations flying around lately. the bottom line is there are two kinds of spying. there's the international spying that's caused some international trouble, but not entirely unexpected. the real controversy, the controversial spying is domestic spying, whether that's france or america. a government spying on itself. >> or spying on you. all right, thank you very much. 5:15 right now. we can tell you a massive cleanup still ongoing in china to keep the yellow sea coast lines from becoming green. work crews using bulldozers to scoop uptons of algae. that looks like hay but it's algae which has bloomed along the eastern china coastline. it first appeared out there --

5:29 am
new this morning, that b.a.r.t. strike is over, at least for right now. some good news to start your day. 5:29 right now, i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. trains will be back up and running at 3:00 this afternoon. workers agreed to call off the strike despite the fact there's no new contract in place. >> christie smith is live in walnut creek with more details on this temporary deal and what that ultimately means for riders out there. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon, and happy friday. riders this morning welcomed the news, a lot of them telling us they heard it on their car radio on the way down to the b.a.r.t. station where they would catch one of these bus bridges into san francisco. they say they welcome it, but they're hoping that it sticks, that both sides can reach a permanent agreement and that they're not back out waiting for buses again.
5:30 am
what's happened is that b.a.r.t. and its striking unions have agreed to a 30-day extension of their contract after four days on the picket lines and hundreds of thousands of riders frustrated, sitting in gridlock, waiting for ferries and buses, they're going back to work. b.a.r.t.'s gm said what this means for the riding public is that the trains will be rolling again today at 3:00. the decision on the temporary agreement came at the request of the state labor secretary and the mediators involved, but there still appears to be plenty of friction on both sides that will have to be ironed out before the august 4th deadline for a new contract. one rider just told me again she hopes she's not back out here waiting for a bus again in 30 days. >> i'd rather be prepared for the worst, seriously. but, you know, the buses have been really, really accommodating. you know, that's been fine. >> reporter: will it be nice actually sitting on a train on the way home, though? >> yes, it will. i'm looking forward to that very
5:31 am
much. >> we are putting b.a.r.t. on notice that they have 30 days to right this ship and ensure that our members get the contract that they deserve and that the riding public gets the b.a.r.t. service that they deserve. thank you. >> reporter: now, one union rep says the unions go back to the table on monday. meantime those bus bridges still in effect this morning at the five stations. el cerrito, del norte, dublin, pleasantton, fremont, walnut week and west oakland. but what's different is instead of these buses dropping people off at the west oakland city and getting on another bus, these buses are going directly into san francisco. reporting live in walnut creek, christie smith, "today in the bay." breaking news now. the monthly job numbers released just moments ago. business and tech reporter scott mcgrew joins us now with the details. >> well, good morning to you. 195,000 jobs, laura, added in the month of june. that is a pretty solid number. the unemployment rate sticks at
5:32 am
7.6%. this according to the latest numbers which came to us less than a minute ago. now, one of the important things we're going to look at are past months' revisions, laura. they always go back, fix the past months and say we've got better data than we did. also we'll see where those jobs came in, construction, farming, retail, that kind of thing. we'll update you in just a few minutes but i wanted to get that 195,000 to you just as soon as i could. >> you said yesterday, scott, the numbers would make investors happy no matter what. do you think that still holds true? >> right. a bad number means that the fed isn't going to ease off of easy money. a good number just shows good, solid growth in the economy. we're seeing -- this is decent growth and i think investors will be happy with that so it's kind of a win-win. >> i heard anything over 160. >> that's a good rule of thumb. more than two dozen people recovering after getting caught in a fireworks showdown in southern california. it was a scary scene there. we now have a better idea of
5:33 am
exactly what went wrong. marla tellez is in the newsroom with all the details and some pretty amazing video we're just getting in. marla, good morning. >> reporter: jon, good morning. this massive explosion was caught on home video and it shows the moment the fireworks launcher tipped over and people started running for their lives. >> oh! oh! oh, my god! oh, oh, oh! run! run, run, run! >> reporter: you can hear just how scared this man is who is recording this. the fireworks essentially started shooting into the crowd of some 10,000 people. this happened about 9:20 last night at the rotary club's fireworks show in simi valley, which is about 40 miles northwest of los angeles. just into our newsroom, officials are calling this an industrial accident. it's believed at least one of the launching stations fell over just a few minutes into the show. in all, 28 people are hurt. most with mild injuries. though ventura county fire says
5:34 am
four people are severely hurt. their injuries consistent with shrapnel and projectile-type injuries. witnesses explain the terrifying experience. >> it was like we were sitting right there, right in front of the whole thing and it only lasted like a few seconds, you know, when the whole thing -- it was about to start when the whole thing just went -- you know, everything exploded and parts came flying everywhere. and so, you know, people running everywhere. so it was pretty scary. >> to say the least. take a look at this photo we just received from the simi valley police department. this is an officer's gun belt that was nicked in a couple places boy what's thought to be a piece of shrapnel from that explosion. luckily this officer was not hurt, though he may need a new gun belt. we've also learned the people who were injured range in age from 7 to 78 years old. coming up in my next report, i'll have more on the company
5:35 am
behind this failed fireworks show. laura. >> really frightening to hear there, thank you, marla. it's 5:34. now back to the bay area and the cleanup under way this morning in a neighborhood on the north san jose/milpitas border. a family having a fourth of july barbecue when the propane tank they were using exploded. the fire spread quickly but firefighters knocked it down before spreading to other homes on sydney drive just blocks away from milpitas christian school. >> the fire just goes so quick. just a blink of your eyes, a total loss of the house. >> everyone was okay. as firefighters were mopping up, however, another fire sparked two blocks away. witnesses say a bottle rocket fell into trees and they caught fire in just seconds. the flames were put out before they could spread to nearby homes. firefighters mopping up after two separate brush fires in the oakland hills. both those fires breaking out in joaquin miller park about 11:30 last night on opposite sides of the park.
5:36 am
this morning crews still there on scene. so far no word yet on how many acres actually burned or exactly what caused the fires. we will of course continue to follow this story and bring you any updates as soon as they become available. this morning the contra costa county fire department says a 50-acre brush fire in pittsburg is under control following fourth of july festivities. that fire was reported about 9:00 p.m., about the same time fireworks were starting. quickly moved from a large field into the 700 block willow pass way. that's close to highway 4. it took crews about an hour just to put the fire out. homeowners from a nearby harbor lights community tried to extinguish some of the flames from their backyards. the fire department that responded to the fire is one of two county fire houses that supervisors agreed to actually close back in may. the pittsburg fire station is scheduled to close its doors on monday. it's 5:36 right now. some good news along with being friday. you can tell the difference coming in. >> already when you walk out the
5:37 am
door, you're going to feel it. and you know what, we kind of like it. >> christina loren is here to tell us all about it. >> 5:36, good morning to you. taking a live look at a beautiful start to the day over san jose now. you always are going to get a beautiful sunrise the day after the fourth of july, and the reason why is because all that debris, that particulate matter is suspended up in our atmosphere. as the sun comes up, you get the oranges and yellows. we'll show you those live pictures all morning long. beautiful start to the day. yeah, we actually have pretty good air quality the day after as well, we're in the good to moderate range all across the board. winds are certainly picking up but this is a good sign. those winds are coming right off the ocean so it's a beautiful, cool day shaping up for us, 20 degrees cooler as a matter of fact, but you're running so cool in livermore, 15 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. your temperature, 58 degrees. we haven't seen the 50s for at least four days so it feels really nice out there. "today in the bay" works like this. highs will be in the low 80s
5:38 am
inland, 77 bayside and 62 degrees at the coast. even though there's not a lot of traffic out there, we do want to remind you b.a.r.t. is not running until later today, even though they are working on that strike. let's check on that drive with our very own anthony slaughter. >> thank you, christina. looking good on those weather maps. 60s by the coast looks real nice. in the north bay we are talking about an accident on sir francis drake boulevard. on 101 there was a car that veered off the road and hit a fence, so crews are trying to clear that away but you'll notice it's not impending traffic too much. as we get into san francisco, one is starting to slow as you get over towards the sunset district but i've highlighted an area on the bay bridge. this is the lower deck. this is actually a stall. it was not slowing traffic. but if you are moving from san francisco over to the east bay, heads up crews are getting that off the bridge and into oakland. really good conditions. lots of green on the map. even the bay bridge approach shows that things are flowing
5:39 am
