piece by piece. crews working through the night to remove the wreckage of asiana flight 214 as bay area politicae leaders discuss new laws to deal with the future disasters. good morning everybody. it's 5:00. thanks for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. the runway where that flight crashed last saturday is expected to reopen as soon as this weekend. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in burlingame overlooking the crash site which has been fairly active in the last few hours. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura and jon. you can see over my shoulder that workers have been out on runway 28l. they've been out there since last night cutting apart that boeing 777 aircraft that was once asiana flight 214. it's too big to be taken away whole. throughout the night a crane has been lifting the pieces out of that grass si area and hauling them to another site on airport property until the airport can

find a permanent place to store the wreckage or have it salvaged. one reason this is an around-the-clock operation, the airport is rushing to get the runway reopened hopefully by sunday afternoon. with only three runways in operation, travelers have been experiencing delays and some cancellations since saturday morning's crash. once this wreckage is removed, which it might already be -- it's hard to tell from this vantage point, the airport will have to slurp up any jet fuel that was spid. they're working on fixing the seawall, the runway and navigational equipment damaged by the crash. once that's complete, the faa will test land an airport on 28l to make sure the runway is safe. earlier last month, minority house speaker nancy pelosi, congresswoman jackie speier toured the site with the ntsb chairman. this was a chance for them to get a better sense of what worked when it came to the evacuation of the aircraft and what didn't. for instance, you might recall two flight attendants were

pinned when one of the emergency chutes deployed inside the aircraft. perhaps new laws are necessary to address that and other things that didn't go right after the crash. >> i think that we're going to certainly review the recommendations from the ntsb. whether or not mandatory drug and alcohol testing should be done, whether or not there should be an increase in the number of hours, whether or not they should have a straharp instrument on the plane so they can ke flute the chute, there's a lot of things to look at. >> reporter: back out here live you can see the front part of the fuselage is being hauled away from the runway. it's a slow crawl, an operation that the airport will cover the cost of. referring now to the sale vagging of this wreckage. sfo did say lit be submitting a bill to asiana airlines for reimbursement. reporting live from burlingame, this is bob redell, "today in

the bay." today families of the two girls killed in the crash are meeting again with the coroner's office. the family of wang linjia has not been able to see her body yet because that office is not equipped to offer viewings. mayor lee says a funeral home has been located and he hopes the family will be able to see their daughter's body sometime soon. ♪ meantime in southern california a memorial was held for the two girls. wang linjia and yes mengyuan were headed for a three-week camp at west valley christian school when the plane crashed. on stage at the school, two empty student desks and a photo montage between speakers. church leaders say they'll be sending banners filled with messages to the families of the girls. memorial plaques will be sent to their school in china.

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live at oakland police headquarters with reaction from family members. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. we spoke with the grandfather of little daphne webb. he says the family has gotten a lot of support through this horrible ordeal. he also stresses they want to put the focus on finding little daphne and not necessarily the actions of her father.

the search for daphne viola webb ins tense fid just hours after john webb was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment. the case is still being treated as a kidnapping and missing persons case. twice now police have searched the martin luther king regional shoreline park near the airport using cadaver dogs, helicopters, looking for any sign of them÷aj little girl. they also searched the father's home. police say webb told them he would come to the area to play with his daughter. webb told police he left the little girl in the car with his 87-year-old mother who has dementia. he says he ran into a convenience store on 79th and international and came back and daphne was gone. webb is being held in the santa rita jail. here is his father, glen davis. >> we're not ignoring him. by the same time, it seems the

limelight is turned to him and away from the baby. it was a bad move. hindsight is 20/20. i hope everything works out especially on his behalf. my daughter, they still love each other. they had been communicating. >> little daphne weighs about 30 pounds and was wearing orange pajamas with pink hearts on them and pink socks. police also looking into reports of a woman, possibly black or hispanic carrying;gk a child in similar clothes. there are reports that she was walking away from the area, but they still haven't been able to substantiate that. wanted to also mention daphne's father, john webb is expected to be arraigned later this afternoon. live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you, christie. it is 5:06. a san jose police officer working in the sexual assault unit is being charged with a sex crime himself involving a minor.

the detective turned himself in to his colleagues at a department he worked for for almosb? ten years. "today in the bay's" marla tellez live at police headquarters in san jose with details on where this case goes now. >> reporter: good morning. this officer's name is tony fregger. he's 33 years old. we can't give you a look at him. si police department doesn't release officer mug shots. we can give you a rundown of what he is accused of doing. tony fregger is facing two felonies after he wasu caught with possessing sexually explicit photos of a minor. that's felony number one.vo number two, communicating with a mine for for the purpose of receiving sexually explicit photos. this was in 2010 when fregger first contacted the underage girl online. a couple months later she told him she was 17, soon to be 18. in reality she was just 16 years

in reali&háhp &hc& just 16 years despite knowing this, detectives say fregger asked for x rated photos of the the teen and she obliged. the deputy d.a. says these sorts of internal investigations are never a goinged thing for a police department. according to him, san jose pd shorthanding it well. >> mr. fregger has done a disservice by engaging in this condu conduct. the investigation that the san jose police department did in uncovering these facts andmk/r presenting the case to our office was excellent. >> detectives seized fregger's home computer in may. it was yesterday he cameyó6( do and turned himself in to his colleagues and is on administrative leave pending this investigation. coming up in my next report, according to investigators, exactly how fregger reacted the very first moment he realized this girl was under age. that's coming up at 5:30.

we're live in san jose, marla tellez, "today in the bay." 5:08. t ri]morning new details about a man who swam five hours to save his family from a capsized boat. we know one of those he saved is little girl from the bay area. john franklin ribs was on a fishing trip near deal island off the coast of 'nevmaryland. the boat took on water,b7léc to over. he left= family members and swa to shore through stinging jellyfish. after five hours he made it to shorend and knocked on the door of a home for help. the 9-year-old girl on the boat is emily horn, a fourth grader visiting from san francisco. she did an interview with a local newspaper and calls her her uncle a real hero.

weather forecast, not going to change a whole lot over the next couple days. by lunchtime inland you'll see the numbers inokkf the 70s. livermore and san jose staying in the 60s in san francisco, maybe briefly close to 70 in oakland. sea breeze picks up heading into tonight cooling us off. for the weekend, a slight change for the valleys, a slight warmup. turning cooler again as we approach monday. talk about cruise control. i would not suggest that on your drive right now, at least not through oakland. we have changing conditions through 880 past the coliseum. we see a burst of traffic, taillights past the high street high-rise. there's a little break tapping i've seen in this shot here. see from time to time a little slowing there. there you go on the northbound side. the a's play the red sox tonight 7:05. there will be post work traffic there. over here the crews should be completely cleared north 242. you see tiny dots of yellow as

francisco to livermore. 52 in morgan hill and the winds onshore right now. we've got a southeast wind into san jose. if sometimes you can get the southeast wind for the morning, air traffic out of san jose airport will take off from north to south. if you hear more noise on the north side of san jose is a, that could be the reason why. southwest wind at fen in san francisco and up to 21 in fairfield. the moon moon moisture which came up on wednesday has moved a little further to the east f. your weekend plans include south lake tahoe, watch ous or an isolated thundershower. tomorrow into sunday we'll see a slight change, high pressure building back a little closer to northern california is going to get us into maybe low 90s by the end of the weekend. not much change on the coast. that onshore ocean air conditioning will stick around through the weekend. if you want mid 70s in the forecast, santa cruz will be the place for you. today patches of low clouds

staying near the sea shore. quickly asjvw we head towards t& evening, you can see the fog filling in@ towards oakland and pushing inland again this time tomorrow morning. high temperatures today, 70s to mid 80s around san jose. yesterday's high about 75 degrees. downtown going up to 79 today. a little bit warmer. mid 80s inland around the tri-valley. probably closer to 90 tomorrow, 65 degrees in san francisco and 70s around the north bay. valley temperatures warming up for the weekend, not much change for the coast. the valleys cool down again as we head towards monday as the ocean air conditioning kicks up. temperatures drop down early next week. let's see if it's still friday light in the morning commute. >> it is. it's also 5:19 light. kind of the same. it'svú summertime months, not quite as much of a build. the little yellow you see here down to 59 at times. that's not a major concern. we do have developments though later on today. we have a big soccer match over

albert desal vo. he is theon man who at one time confessed to those crimes. today his family is furious about how police got access to the dna to make this link. desal vo died back in 1973. police followed around his nephew and finally got his dna after he tossed out a water bottle. police used that water bottlet]z get dna family profile here. the family very upset because it says it would have provided police for a sample without hesitation had they been asked. his body will be redoomed for more testing. you know the saying every squirrel finds a nut? this one set its sights on a car. >> got to see that. the fuselage from asiana flight 214 away from the runway that has been closed since the tragic crash that happened on saturday morning, taking the lives of two people. you can see them moving that plane across. the ntsb has cleared the way for them to move all the wreckage away as they take their investigation to washington, d.c. it will take about a year to get the full report on that. it's 5:25 right now. also this morning, hundreds of parents lining up in san jose for free school supplies. sacred heart community service's 11th annual pack a back campaign. parents have a chance to sign up their kids for one of 2,300 backpacks full of supplies. they'll be handed out next month. right now they're taking the names organizers say parents spend up to $60, and that's nearly a full day's pay for some

minimum wage workers. it's on first street near the dmv. how about this one? a family ibei% thought it was the target of vandals after they found some unexpected damage to their suv, but it turns out the culprit was actually simply just a hungry squirrel. take a look at this. you can see the squirrel nibbling away at the suv leaving behind pretty large holes. animal experts say squirrels have been known to chew through car wires and it's not unusual for the little critters to look for a nice warm place to nest. the family says they will wait until the squirrel is finally full before they get the suv fixed. >> i can't believe we've got video. i guess they can show that to insurance. really, a squirrel has been eating my car. >> i would think a rat. >> that happens. the rats craw up there and want to get warm and nibble on the

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning everybody. yes, they are removing that wreckage. it's a big job piece by piece. the crews out there working very hard toeing away the biggest remaining parts of that, being the main cabin of asiana flight 214. today in the bay's bob redell is live in burlingame overlooking the crash site which has been very active over the last few hours. it has to be amazing watching that slowly move out. >> reporter: it certainly is an you can see the front part of asiana flightg& 214 slowly bein hauled away from the crash site to another site on property as it goes past active airlines that are obviously in parking position right now waiting to be boarded sometime later today. another curious site overnight at the crash site on the end of runway 28l, i want to show@

were cuttingk $yñ apart that bo 777 aircraft. it's not clear if there was a fire. perhaps it could have been the @ reignition of spilled jet úulfu maybe dust being spun as the workers were cutting apart that aircraft. we have placed a call in for an answer. whatever it is, it is gone. it has been put out or is not happening. one reason why theyçkúsñ have t apart this aircraft,ju9w frankl boeing 777 is too big to be taken away whole. throughout the night, they're hauling the front section off to another site on airport property where it will remain for a couple of weeks until the airline can find a permanent place off-site to either store the wreckage or have it salvaged. one reason this is an around-the-clock operation, the airport is rushing to get the runway reopened as soon as possible. the plan is to have it open by sunday afternoon.

now. good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning. this officer turned himself in at sjpd after san jose police said they found sexually explicit photos of a minor on his home computer. these photos stemming from an inappropriate relationship he had with this nfgitptt girl a couple years ago. the officer's name is tony fregger. he's 33 years old. here is a look at what investigators are telling us. detectives say in 2010 fregger a couple months later in january they had an exchange on facebook where it came to light the girl was not legal, she was under age. in reality she was 16 years old, but she told fregger in a written message, quote, i'm 17 his response, quote? you 17? oh, man, i thought you were like 21. lol. lol as you know, means laugh out

loud. fregger requested and received x rated photos of the teen. the santa clara district attorney's office is now handling this case. >> police officers are entrusted to carry guns, carry batons, protect the community and en&= z4'yvñ fregger is charged with breaking the law. so the public trust was violated in that regard. it was also violated because a minor was a victim in the case. >> reporter: fregger is and eight-year veteran for the san jose police department, assigned to the sexual assault unit in march of 2010, so just months before investigators say he actually started breaking the law. he's now facing two felonies. pending this investigation he is on administrative leave. live in san jose, marla tellez, "today in the bay." now to a developing story

we've been following in oakland. oakland police will be giving us an update on the search for 21-month-old toddler daphne webb. meantime her father getting reld difficult to make a court appearance standing accused of child endangerment in this case. "today in the bay's" christie smith live at oakland police headquarters with an update on the search and reaction from family members. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. i heard from oakland police and they say they'll have an update sometime after 7:00 this morning on this case. we also spoke dw daphne webb's grandfather who says he wants to make sure that the focus on all this is on finding the missing toddler. focus has been on the actions of her father, he says. this is a picture of the 21-month-old girl. her father jon web told police he went to a store in east oakland wednesday morning and left her in the car at 79th and international while he ran in to get an energy drink. he left her in the car with his

87-year-old mom who has 2k34e7x yeah. he says he was in there quickly and when he returned to the car, daphne was gone. police searched the martin luther king regional shoreline park a couple times using helicopters and dogs. they say her father sometimes took her there to play. they've also looked at his apartment in oakland. webb was arrested in child endangerment for leaving the girl in the car with his mom. it's still being treated aa kidnapping and missing person's case. >> her and her husbands, they have a great relationship. she doesn't want anybody to think bad of him. our biggest concern is about0a5e baby. i know a lot of attention is being turned to him. but right now our focus is on the baby. that's who we want to see right now. >> reporter: little daphne weighs about 30 pounds. she was wearing orange pajamas

in sanford with how soon we can expect the jury to get the case. >> reporter: good morning, laura. how soon theo jury will get th case will depend on how long the defense arguments go. they estimate d it will take about three hours. the jury will be considering two different charges. the first is that second degree murder charge, the one we've heard all along. the second was added yesterday by the judge at the request of the prosecution. it is the lesser charge of first degree manslaughter. yesterday you saw the prosecution lay out their case in a two-hour presentation saying that george zimmerman incorrectly profiled trayvon martin as a criminal and followed him, setting into motion a deadly chain of events. about 15 minutes ago, the defense began their arguments. so far attorney mark omar rah has thanked the jury for their service and he is just getting now into the meat of his closing

at the merge where the two major freeways come together out of the east bay and tri-valley. livermore, 580 westbound is not looking like any problem. past vasco a very light commute. highway 84 towards sunol, a smooth flow. 680 at 84 is where we have reports of a crash. we see a little slowing there. i did see flashing lights. i haven't seen a big backup on our cameras yet. this is southbound 880 as you're heading down in toward union city into hayward. we had slowing right around whipple is when it sounds like there's some sort of roadway hazard. chp getting details. we have a good deal of slowing that just popped up in the last fuf minutes. prepare for that heading down into fremont. down into the south bay, a smooth flow for 880 and 680. northbound 101 shows slowing as well. that's the first burst that we typically see before 6:00. we have a soccer game as well as a concert. i'll get out of your way. mass transit, no delays for

b.a.r.t. oracle trains or vta. we'll have more on the b.a.r.t. developments there. another strike is looming for b.a.r.t. b.a.r.t. and the two main labor union also be back at the bargaining table today. the two sides have until august 5th to hammer out a new contract. no meetings are scheduled to take place next week because the agency's chief negotiator will be on vacation. b.a.r.t. workers went on strike for four days last week shutting down the transit system. no agreement was reached. trains started rolling again after the unions agreed to go back to work. the key issues are wages, health care and retirement benefits. this one is a local story in the national spotlight. we're talking about the film based on the life of oscar grant. it is now showing in select theaters called "fruitvale station." i opens at the grand lake in oakland, the metreon in san francisco and the california theater in berkeley.
