good monday morning. coming up on "early today," reaction around the country and at the department of justice to the verdict in the george zimmerman case. reports that edward snowden has very specific blueprints of how the national security agency does what they do. a major loss for high scho motorcycle racing. plus, an autopsy will be done today to determine the cause of death for "glee" star cory monteith. a big win for lefty in europe. and another "despicable" weekend for those mignons. i'm betty ngyuen. the verdict is in and the trial is over but the controversy is not. it's spilling from social media and into the streets. first, nbc news has learned that george zimmerman will be able to retrieve his gun from authorities if he requests it. now to sarah dallof in sanford, florida. what are the latest developments less than 48 hours after this verdict? >> reporter: well, good morning, betty. a lot of protests from coast to coast. and overwhelmingly, they have been peaceful. but that does not mean that emotions are not running high. >> we the jury find george zimmerman not guilty. >> reporter: seconds after the verdict was read in the courtroom, reaction to george zimmerman's acquittal spilled into the streets. >> how you can murder an innocent child and sleep at night? >> the system has failed us because if shows this is a continuation of racial oppression. >> reporter: news of demonstrations spread across social media.

thousands marched in tallahassee, chicago, new york and other cities. firing up debate about gun control, race and self-defense laws in the nation. >> this has definitely been a tragedy, but coming from the tragedy has been a movement which we are and we love it to be more awareness. not just a few people in sanford know about it but it's everyone. >> reporter: president obama issued a statement urging the country to move forward. it read in part, "i now ask every american to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son." sunday marked george zimmerman's first day as a free man, the ankle monitor tracking him for more than a year removed. his supporters say the jury made the right decision. >> this verdict is a correct verdict as far as i'm concerned. there was just not enough evidence to convict him. >> reporter: a sentiment echoed by his attorney. >> george zimmerman was never

guilty of anything except for protecting himself from self-defense. >> reporter: the u.s. department of justice continues its assessment into trayvon martin's death, and an attorney for martin's parents say they're considering a civil lawsuit. but for the time being are focused on remembering their son. federal prosecutors were going to take a close look at this trial. they're going to review evidence and testimony to determine if they will move ahead with their case. betty, back to you. >> sarah, thank you. in the wake of george zimmerman's acquittal, protests are popping up nationwide and they grew in size and intensity sunday night. from new york, to washington to chicago to los angeles where protesters marched on interstate 10 shutting down the freeway for nearly an hour. at least one person was arrested. demonstrators marched and carried signs calling the verdict an injustice to trayvon martin. and though the most vocal

showing since the verdict of the 17-year-old, others have shown support for the acquittal, namely on social media. facebook pages supporting him have thousands of likes. a new report out this morning says edward snowden has highly sensitive documents on now the national security agency works that could harm the u.s. government. "the guardian's" glen greenwald who has been in contact with the nsa leaker says the documents are basically an instruction manual for how the nsa is built. >> in order to take documents that proved what he says is true, he had to take ones that included very sensitive blueprints of how the nsa does what they do and so he's in possession of literally thousands of documents that contain very specific blueprints that would allow somebody who read them to know exactly how the nsa does what it does, which would in turn allow them either to evade that surveillance or replicate it.

>> greenwald says snowden has demanded the details of the documents not be made public. he has been stuck at moscow's airport since june 23rd without a passport. on friday's notice that he was willing to meet vladimir putin condition that he stop the leaks in exchange for asylum. as of this morning, the russian authorities say they have not received any requests. this morning, a 6-year-old illinois boy remains in critical condition after being pulled from a sand dune hole. officials say that nathan woessner was buried for about 4 1/2 hours. according to newly released 911 calls, nathan's father and a family friend tried hand digging him out before rescuers and heavy equipment arrived. >> my friend's son, he got stuck in a sand dune and he's under the sand and we can't get him out. he's up on the dune. >> can anybody see him or is he completely covered by sand?

>> colin, is he completely covered by sand? yes, my husband and his dad are trying to dig him out. >> can you imagine? officials say luckily an air pocket saved this little boy's life. reports say nathan's injuries are not life threatening and that his outlook is good. that is one lucky little boy. well, canadian authorities plan to perform an autopsy today to determine actor cory monteith's cause of death. the 31-year-old "glee" actor was found saturday night with no indication of foul play. monteith had a history of drug addiction and even checked himself into rehab last april. the actor said he struggled with addiction since he was a teenager. in a foreboding interview from 2011, he claimed he was, quote, lucky to be alive. at least 200 people have been evacuated from an area of

an active volcano that spewed ash more than three miles into the air. it is only 84 miles away from the capital of ecuador in quito. now for a look at the weather, here is bill karins. luckily we don't have this problem. we do have a heat problem. >> from coast to coast, unless you're in the coastal areas of the atlantic or pacific ocean. it is a scorcher. this week will be one of the hottest of the year. yesterday we were near 100 in boise. we're going to do it again today. these temperatures. you can see how hot they are. new york city into the act over there on the east coast at 97. kind of what's going on. here's kind of -- what we call the x-ray of the atmosphere. you see the swirl over texas. that's another cut-off low. on the east coast and over much of the west are two big domes of high pressure. the jet stream retreated up into canada. unless you are north of there, it is very hot out there. so yesterday's highs we are about 96 in boise.

97 in salt lake city. the desert areas have returned to their hot weather. 110 yesterday in phoenix. it's hard to find any cool weather out there. and overnight lows haven't dropped off much especially in the desert. it's not bad, though, from portland to seattle. and this afternoon you'll see gorgeous weather. i think the pacific northwest will be the one area of the country that it won't be too hot but just about everybody else, you know, scorching. that's a look at your monday y time you get that onshore breeze there in san fran. so the summer heat continues. hopefully we'll keep the fires out of the picture. >> those are just the temperatures. that's not the heat index, right? >> thankfully in the west they don't have the humidity the east has so it's not much of an issue. do you like twinkies? >> people keep asking me this

welcome back. here's some stories making news on this monday. asiana airlines prepares for a litany of lawsuits from passengers on flight 214. the company is getting ready to do some suing of its own. on friday san francisco tv station ktvu aired what it thought were the names of the pilots of the flight. clearly fake and owe offensive names were originally confirmed with the ntsb but now the organization says a summer intern erroneously confirmed the names.

asiana airlines is suing the station and may bring a lawsuit against the ntsb as well. pennsylvania's strict voter i.d. law is being taken to court on monday to decide if it should be enforced or if the law is unconstitutional. the 2012 legislation could require pennsylvania voters to show a valid photo i.d. at the polls. state officials say it will cut down on the fraud and opponents say it will discourage people from voting. the royal baby hype is bigger than ever. any day now, william and kate are expecting the birth of their first child. even souvenir shops are getting in on the excitement, stocking up on royal baby merchandise. >> a very subtle royal collection. we've had a huge response. in fact, a couple of the lines sold out the first weekend we put them in our stores. >> bookmakers are betting on today or tomorrow as the big day. >> i kind of think tomorrow and maybe a girl.

that's my bet. for an early look at today's business headlines we turn to jackie deangelis. good morning, jackie. >> good morning, betty. stocks coming off their second best week of the year with the dow and the s&p 500 index at record highs. earnings are going to dominate this week with one-third of the dow set to report results. a new survey finding that gas prices fell about half a cent over the past three weeks to an average of $3.59 a gallon nationwide. but prices are expected to jump 10 to 15 cents in the next week or so as retailers pass on the costs of higher wholesale gas prices to consumers. and stubhub getting competition. reports saying that concert promoter live nation is going to step into its market with a ticket resale service called ticketmaster plus in the u.s. this week. back over to you. >> thank you, jackie. a new week on wall street. and main street begins with twinkies and other hostess products returning to store shelves nationwide after a bankruptcy forced the company out of business.

3d printing has been around about 20 years but has been pretty expensive to run. now a twice from 3d systems called the cube retails for 1500 bucks and puts the power into consumers' hands. they work by depositing a thin layer of plastic or other color in a pattern determined by a computer program and then layering it over and over again. and the financial times has reported that apple is on a hiring spree for people to work on the iwatch project. timing of this suggests the device if it happens, could arrive late this year at the earliest. straight ahead, a big weekend in sports for phil and all your highlights. that's coming up.

here are some sports headlines. some top sprinters failed at drug tests including american tyson gay who says he is pulling out of the world championships in moscow next month. jamaican sprinter asafa powell and sherone simpson also tested positive for banned substances. baltimore's chris davis hit his 37th home run before the all-star break. check it out. and that actually ties reggie jackson's american league record. davis will be on the american league team for tonight's home run derby. we'll see if he can do it again. in cleveland, one fan had a very lucky day catching foul balls for each of the three kids

that he was sitting with. can you imagine? then that's not it. another foul ball. he got that one, too. but he tossed that fourth foul ball to another fan. very generous of him. on the fifth playoff hole at the pga john deere classic. 19-year-old jordan speith made the putt for the win. he's just 19. the first teen to win since 1931. and a playoff at the scottish open. phil mickelson made a fantastic wedge shot that put him close to the hole and then he just tapped it in for the victory. it's lefty's first win in europe since 1993 and a confidence builder going into next week's british open championship. we have some sad news to tell you about today. one of the world's top high-speed motorcycle riders died in a crash in maine on sunday trying to race at more than 300 miles per hour. right before the attempt, bill warner talked about the dangers of riding at such high speeds. >> i just turn it up a little bit at a time.

and we've gotten a 296. so we got just a little bit more to go. but hopefully, we can keep it on the ground. >> tragically, warner lost control while traveling at 287 miles per hour and was killed. he was just 44 years old. and american david colturi won the dangerous and exciting cliff diving series event above lake gardia in italy. he made this amazing combination of twists and turns in the air before a perfect landing. just ahead, fergie is going the way of madonna, pele and prince. and despicable me knocks out the grown-ups and robots. you're watching "early today."

welcome back. hope you had a wonderful weekend. the weather forecast doesn't look to be too exciting in the west this week. not talking about any rain chances. temperatures about the only issue we'll worry about. still very hot in the interior west. this has been a very warm stretch through the intermountain west. salt lake city 99. beautiful in the northwest. and just depends where you are. the terrain really determines your temperature so much in the west. sacramento, this isn't bad by your standards. we do get very warm towards the end of the week. compare that to sacramento. you can drive to san francisco and you can be in the 60s or 70s or go the other direction and go up into the mountains. it may be cooler, too. >> a long drive from here,

though. too long for me today. thank you, bill. well, a wide range of reactions has just erupted from the world of entertainment following george zimmerman's not guilty verdict. beyonce held a moment of silence for trayvon martin at her concert in tennessee. and while most celebs expressed disappointment like miley cyrus, who tweeted "i feel sick," there were some, like larry king, who showed support for the judicial system. he tweeted, "we have a system that i believe in, the jury system. i wasn't at the scene and only one man knows. and "despicable me 2" continued box office supremacy bringing in $44 million. and "grown ups 2," "pacific rim" the heat and "the lone ranger" cedar sinai medical center fired six employees for

inappropriately accessing records, possibly belonging to the couple's daughter. black eyed pea singer fergie no longer has an identity crisis. she has filed documents to legally change her name from stacey ann ferguson. now it's fergie duhamel. and new beginnings and breakup. halle berry and jimmy kimmel said i do to their longtime compani companions. but jane lynch filed for divorce from her wife. >> jimmy kimmel's wedding was supposed to be quite the celebrity -- >> weren't you invited? >> i couldn't go. >> oh, that's what it was. >> i was busy. >> maybe next time. hopefully there's not a next time. i'm betty ngyuen. this is "early today." we hope it's just your first stop of the day on nbc.

pennsylvania law that would require photo i.d.s in court today. at issue whether it should be enforced or unconstitutional. a state judge suspended the law before the 2012 elections. amid concerns it could disenfranchise voters. an autopsy is expected today for "glee" star cory monteith. the actor was found dead in a vancouver hotel on saturday. foul play is not suspected. monteith had openly said he struggled with addiction since being a teenager. and an incredible rescue to tell you about. 6-year-old nathan woessner is in critical condition after a massive sand dune in indiana swallowed him 11 feet under for four hours. doctors say this outlook is very good. a group of bulldogs have found a pretty fun way to get around. every saturday, these dogs and their owners go to an empty parking lot and the dogs skateboard. some dogs need a little push, most can get on the boards on their own.
