state hit the 09-degree mark for tuesday. today won't be any better. stephanie gosk has more on the summer spike of temperatures. >> reporter: searing, sweating summer. how are you guys holding up in this heat? >> it's really warm. >> you look like you're really warm. >> i'm melting, actually. >> reporter: heat advisories and warnings were issued in about a dozen states increasing dangerous conditions for days to come. in philadelphia, the largest senior center is extending its hours. >> our main concern is that a lot of our older adults are dealing with health issues. and they could be compromised as a result of the heat. >> reporter: especially when there is no chance to cool down, not even at night. low temperatures in some cities aren't even dipping below 80, putting a tax on people and infrastructure. >> the cities hold on to the heat because of the asphalt in the buildings and concrete. and so the temperatures don't drop off very much. so we start out high early in the morning, and then the heat builds on top of that. >> reporter: adding insult to injury, a water main break in

prince george's county, maryland, will interrupt service for days. >> it's a big inconvenience, so i'm trying to prepare me and my family for it. >> reporter: an estimated 100,000 people are preparing for mandatory water restrictions. >> i hope for the best, you know, but i'm prepared for the worst. >> reporter: in new york city, a scary moment at a political rally when a young intern collapsed from heat stroke. it took emergency responders experiencing an influx of weather-related calls more than a half hour to show up. but in philadelphia, the dogged tourists endured standing in line for the liberty bell. a family from birmingham, alabama, said it felt just like home. do you think northerners complain too easily about the heat? >> yeah. y'all complain about the heat and we complain about the cold. >> that was stephanie gosk sweating it out with the rest of us. bill karins will be here in a few minutes to tell us when we can expect a break. one place where things have cooled down is capitol hill. senators have reached a deal, at

least for now, on a way to get things done. the agreement preserves the delaying tactic known as the filibuster in exchange for up-or-down votes on several of president obama's stalled nominees. majority leader harry reid had threatened to change senate rules if no bargain was met. the immediate result was the confirmation of richard cordray to lead the consumer financial protection board. now, president obama nominated back in 2011, but republicans kept pushing off a vote. while the compromise temporarily got things moving, it doesn't address larger questions. senators did not set any framework for restricting future filibusters of nominees. frustration, concern and calls for justice continue across the country in the wake of the not guilty verdict in the george zimmerman murder trial. now the jury member who was scheduled to write a book about how they reached their decision has changed her mind. nbc's jay gray has details from sanford, florida. >> it's just hard thinking that somebody lost their life.

>> reporter: in the wake of this exclusive cnn interview with juror b-37, 4 of the remaining 5 members of that panel released a written statement late tuesday night which says in part, quote, the opinions of juror b-37 expressed on the anderson cooper show were her own and not in any away representative of the jurors listed below. in the letter released by the 18th judicial court, jurors b-51, and sorries say the trial was a highly emotional and physically draining experience and asked the media to respect their privacy. while the controversy over their decision continues to be very public. attorney general eric holder talked about the verdict as he addressed members of the naacp at their convention in orlando. >> we must stand our ground to ensure that our laws reduce violence and take a hard look at laws that contribute to more violence than they prevent. >> the group has urged the department of justice to file federal charges against george zimmerman. jay gray, nbc news, sanford, florida.

a canadian coroner has ruled 31-year-old "glee" actor cory monteith decided of an accident over alcohol and overdose of heroin. they said his death on saturday was likely "nothing more than a most tragic accident kwvment vancouver police say they currently do not suspect foul play and they're working with the coroner's office to see if he was the victim of a bad batch of heroin. monteith, who entered rehab earlier this year sh, said that he struggled with drug abuse since he was a teenager. a close call miles from earth during a harrowing space walk. astronauts were outside the international space station performing routine cable work for barely an hour on tuesday when one of them reported a water leak in his helmet. and it got progressively worse. he struggled to see and hear. >> it's too much. >> i don't know. it's a lot.

>> i see. >> well, that's what mission control called off the walk and it's a good thing they did. nasa says he could have choked or even drowned. he was brought back to the space station where crews worked fast to fix his helmet. it turns out up to 1.5 liters of water leaked into his suit. now, the culprit could have been an unprecedented leak in the suit's cooling system. good thing they got to him. this brutal heat wave. when is it going to end? >> you know, this is a week-long event for many on the east coast. >> yeah. >> many in the inner mountain west and rockies dealing with this on and off heat for the last month. pretty amazing. you know, it's not record shattering intensity but the duration is impressive and i mentioned the inner mountain west. boise, 102, the desert is obviously very hot. salt lake city continues to flirt with the century mark and even the interior portion, los angeles was yesterday and seattle. the 90s from oklahoma and kansas city all the way to the east coast and topping out around 96

was washington, d.c. so the heat wave ends for some but for not everyone. two pools of very hot air, heat domes one over the rockies and eastern seaboard. friday, cooler air comes down from canada with thunderstorms and saturday, that begins to work its way through the northeast, great lakes, ohio valley and through the mid-atlantic but you notice there in the west doesn't look like the jet stream pattern will change much but stay dry and warm in the inner mountain west so not a lot of relief unfortunately for the west as advertised so the forecast for today will look a lot like yesterday, slightly cooler there in through washington state. maybe a slight chance of a storm in spokane. i guess the one good thing it's been so hot and for awhile it

the north korean cargo ship that was seized from panama early tuesday is said to have been carried weapons built in the soviet era. cuba's foreign minister says the items on board are quote, obsolete defensive weaponry. either way may be a violation. the u.s. drug enforcement agency is applauding mexico for its capture of the leader of the feared zetas drug cartel saying it put an end to his ruthless leadership. miguel angel trevino was captured in a pickup truck containing the $2 million in cash and large weapons. mandatory evacuations were put in effect as a fast-moving wildfire tore through a community. 9,000 acre fire west of palm springs has destroyed at least six homes and more than a dozen small buildings, and it's closed two state highways. liz cheney, the daughter of former vice president dick

is talking to media companies to trying to license channels for an internet cable service. google is trying to beat out apple who is reportedly working with networks and cable companies on a tv product, as well. betty, back over to you. >> thank you, jackie. in california regulators are calls on pg&e to pay $300 million in fines for a deadly 2010 gas pipeline blast in san bruno which killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. mcdonald's is facing a backlash over a financial guide for employees. amid a movement a fast food workers pressing for higher minimum wage. that guide suggests monthly expenses like $600 for rent, definitely not here in new york. $150 for a car and $20 for health care. where are they getting these numbers? but it doesn't include allowance for gas or even clothes or food. and the budget is under the assumption that you have two

award for the all-star game. before the game baseball commissioner bud selig announced a new policy aimed at protecting players against discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation. he also just recently admitted that he has never sent an e-mail and says he never will. not sure how he's communicating. as the yankees' alex rodriguez continues rehab, the players union says any suspensions resulting from the drug investigation probably won't be served until next year if the penalties are challenged. now, to soccer action in connecticut last night. team usa's landon donovan got the ball in the open field and the u.s. had a two-on-one breakaway. donovan passed it and the ball was kicked into the net and the usa beat costa rica 1-0 for its eighth straight win, their longest winning streak ever. >> "early today" sports brought to you by men's auto stop.

welcome back. i haven't been able to find many raindrops on the map lately but a couple thunderstorms rolling up north of 90 through areas of washington state. the spokane area may get a sprinkle or two. not a lot out to report on and looks like seattle is in the clear too. most of it is up into the
