we're back with more ways for you to stay cool during this mid-summer heat wave. a lot of you are heading to today.com to share your ideas for beating the heat. for example, from water fountains to creative umbrellas, even our littliest viewers are getting in the water and hitting the cool times. clint carter is senior associate editor of men's health magazine with ideas. >> thanks for having me on matt, with we're going to beat the heat today. >> first you're starting off with what you can make for personal hand coolers.
8:38 am
>> you know how you have the hand warmers in the winter, these are the coolers. you cut them up and have ice cubed size coolers you can carry around. you can put them on your pulse points, wrists, behind your neck. it has a really dramatic effect on your core temperature. >> people will be snacking throughout the day. why not take your favorite sfaks and freeze them. >> got to use your freezer. all the fruits and snacks you're going to eat. applesauce and yogurt. >> throw your favorite juice in. >> coffee, if you want an asudu popsicle use margaritas. you can put your pedestrianing in there too. put pillow case in there and sheets in there. if you don't have ac in the summer you'll love that. >> half hour in the freezer makes you feel better. >> you have to double up the water and it's also important to
8:39 am
get electrolytes sodium, potassium, bananas, avocados. >> one of the tips is eat spicy food because it makes you prespire. >> it is a mild sensation that induces sweating. >> this is great. you can get them at dicks sporting goods and you take the towel, any temperature of water, your body temperature, you get it wet and snap the towel ands going to drop to about 60 degrees immediately. put that on your pulse points. >> are those expensive? >> they're about 10 to $20. really inexpensive and affordable. get at the super market and get ice and put it in a kiddy pool, a 5 gallon bucket. >> even in the cooler there. >> put your feet in a cooler.
8:40 am
you're going to be comfortable. >> and we have saved the best for last. you have a pick up truck, you have a pool on wheels. >> yes, if you do not have a pool in your yard, you have a pool on wheels. plastic, and just wait out the heat wave. >> remember you do that in the cab -- in the back of the pick up truck, not in the front. >> not in the front. >> mario armstrong getting in the act. thank you very much. we appreciate it. let's go to savannah. >> that looks good, matt. thank you. another way to keep cool, a hat. but how do you know if you're wearing it correctly? she is today's fashion contributor. do you think anyone can wear a hat? >> absolutely. it's about owning it and wearing the right shape for your face. >> we have an array of different shaped faces. the first is the heart shaped face. >> it's basically an unside down
8:41 am
triangle. don't have anything that has too much angle on the top or it's too witchy. this hat is perfect. it has the flat brim and wider than the cheekbones. so it accentuates all of it. >> the next is a long face. what looks good on that. >> natalie has a longer shaped face and we have a hat that sits lower on the forehead because the long shape naturally has a high forehead. you want to try and minimize that. just the same trick as having a bang. this is a cool hat. it's recycled straw which helps everything breathe well in the summer. >> that must be one of your favorite fabrics for this hot weather. >> absolutely. straw, cotton and recycled and looks great. >> next we have sarah. she has a round face. what looks good on a round shaped face? >> so for the round shape, it tends to be shorter and fuller. also the most youthful looking face shape. so something here you want with the angle.
8:42 am
we have the angle here and you want something that doesn't sit too far down on the forehead. for this reason, the classic fedora is perfect. >> where can we find a model for the square face? apparently here. i learned about myself this morning. >> it's parallel almost to the cheekbones. so you want something that gives a rounder curve. so we have the perfect floppy hat here and also a big brim. >> like this. >> look how cute. it's so dramatic. very jackie o. >> i like it very much. >> big pair of sunglasses. you're rocking. >> i like the color. >> square shaped face by the way very down to earth and they're doers not thinkers. >> i like to do and think. >> thank you very much. tomorrow we'll tackle the art of wearing a suit. coming up next, martha stewart's
8:43 am
secret ingredient for staying cool in the summer. but first, this is "today" on nbc.
8:44 am
8:45 am
we're back now with martha on today. martha stewart is here to help us beat the heat with tasty treats just in time for national blueberry month. nice to see you. >> it is blueberry month. i was telling you that my blueberries were more prolific than they have ever been. >> share that's great. >> we're eating one of those. >> this say great pop of blueberry yogurt and strawberry. you purr puree it and put it in the popsicle maker, freeze it, healthy, delicious. just a tiny bit of sugar. another thing to do is put your blueberries, pint or quarter in the freezer just like that. they're tasty snacks. >> okay. >> they're really good. >> i'm double fisting. >> i'm going to put this down.
8:46 am
>> one thing that everybody loves because it is not really to beat the heat, it's to make a pie. a blueberry pie and everybody loves blueberry pie. >> is it easy? >> so easy. you have your rounds of pastry already. if you have martha's pastry ready in your freezer it's easy. >> yeah right. >> line your pie dish with a round of dough. >> okay. >> and that's your bottom crust. and then you can fit this right in and then mix your blueberries with cornstarch -- you have the ingredients there. a little lemon juice. some butter. like two tablespoons of butter and sugar and this is the filling. it's the most simple filling on earth. >> you said cornstarch right? >> yeah you could use flower but
8:47 am
i find cornstarch is a nice clear juice to the pie. this is 8 cups of blueberries. put that right in your shell. i hope this all fits. running over. and these are maine blueberries. do you know the difference between maine blueberries -- >> and the ones you grow. >> the high bush. they're the ones that grow in new jersey and farmed berries. >> these look a little small. >> are they tart? >> no, they're sweeter. in maine, they will not look at a large blueberry. i like new jersey blueberries because i come from new jersey. >> is it supposed to run over like this. >> it's not supposed to but the dish is smaller than it was meant to be. >> just checking. >> and working in this heat is a little difficult. i'm going to dump this on the ground and your top crust goes right on. you can fold it over like this. oh boy this is a beautiful pie.
8:48 am
you could make it a lattice. >> i was wondering about that. >> do you mind if i make mine a solid top. >> no yours will be a solid top. >> use flour and crimp the edges and cut them off just like that and cut slits for seams and will you brush the top with egg. >> how long does something like this take to bake martha. >> it could take about an hour. start it off hot. bake it hot. secret is make it cold bake it hot. that's the golden rule of pies. don't you love that. >> sometimes blueberry pie gets a little soggy. how do you avoid that so it doesn't soak through the crust on the bottom. >> cooking it well. you have to cook it until the blueberries in the single of the pie are bubbled. that's why you must cut a little slit here. you can do decorative slits if you're not going to do a lattice. do you want to see the rest of the things down here. >> lots of sugar.
8:49 am
here's another nice thing for you is nice lemonade, fresh lemonade with blueberries in it. take one of these. that's one of the most refreshing ways to beat the heat. those are maine blueberries and here's the lattice pie. it bubbles in the middle. that's when you take it out of the oven. it's going to take anywhere from 45 to maybe 60 minutes to bake a blueberry pie. and this is a blueberry sour cream pound cake with a little bit of whipped cream. want to taste that. >> i'd love to. >> i think you'll like that. that's a good cake. >> and blue napkins as well. >> everything blue. >> thank you so much. >> except you. >> no. i didn't get the memo. >> coming up next, danielle bradbery, the 16-year-old winner of the voice will perform live out here but first this is "today" on nbc.
