"rolling stone" stands by its position to feature the accused boston bomber on its cover, despite a growing backlash that has some major retailers refusing to sell the issue. we'll hear what one of the victims has to say about it today, thursday, july 18th,

2013. good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" 7:00 a.m. on the west coast on a thursday. i'm savannah guthrie. >> and i'm matt lauer. tamron hall and al roker are here. i think a lot of people will have something to say especially in los angeles where there have been a lot of violent protests. but we want to get to the so-called mountain fire. it is raging in southern california. right now emergency officials ordering mandatory evacuation for the resort town of idlewild. miguel, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. 6,000 people have been ordered

out of this area, some 2200 homes are threatened. this is a fast-moving fire fueled by those explosive dry conditions. it's moving in the direction towards homes. yesterday afternoon the winds had shifted, light winds pushing it toward the desert. today we have the winds shifted pushing these flames towards home. we know at least 35 square miles have been charred. this area is a tinderbox. many of these mountainsides have not burned in decades, if not hundreds of years, so firefighters say it's ripe to burn. some six homes have been destroyed, they believe that number may be as high as seven, but it's the threat, the 2200 homes that lie in the path of this blaze. across the west, in seven states across the west, there are 17 major wildfires burning out of control, but here in control, the mountain fire is the top priority fire in the country. it is roughly 15% contained, but again, this fire is blowing towards homes.

firefighters later on today, savannah, will be battling triple-digit heat. >> and we sue the huge plumes of smoke, miguel. air quality is a concern as well? >> reporter: yesterday, fire officials declared poor air quality across the region. we were in palm springs, about 15 miles away this morning. you could see the flames very early this morning at 4:00 a.m. in fact that city it's raining ash, so that plume is certain traveling for miles. miguel almaguer, thank you very much. weather always playing a role. al has a look at it. >> on into the evening, the winds will start gusting out of the west. relative humidity has increased a bit, but it is going to continue to drop later on once those winds pick up. so that's going to be big problems. now, the other big story, of course, the heat.

that heat that continues to bake that area. you're going to continue to see the temperatures away from the water, continually baking parts of california. now, as far as the east coast is concerned, we are looking at record-setting heat. heat advisories in excess of heat warnings across 20 states, over 90 million people affected by this. you can see the big problem is right now the feels-like temperature. 104? hartford, and 106 in philly. as we move to the west, we continue to see this. the good news is we will start to see some relief late tonight into tomorrow for parts of the plains. that will make its way across the eastern half of the country by saturday. matt? all right, al, thank you very much. it's nelson mandela's birthday today. encouraging news about former south african president nelson mandela, today on his 95th birthday. nbc's ron allen is in pretoria,

where there's a huge celebration outside the hospital. good morning, ron. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. it's been an amazing day, full of celebration, a day that many feared might not be a celebration. he's still in critical condition, but everywhere across this country the word from the hospital is that he's improving. we understand he was sitting in a clair, fully aware and cognizant when his family came with a huge card and the giant cake. his doctors still have him listed in critical condition, because they want to see improvement over a longer period of time, but there is some talk from relatives he may be going home soon. perhaps sometimes in the not-too-distant future.

also international nelson mandela day today, asking people to do acts to help make this world a better place. the celebration here, tamron continues. thank you, ron. today president obama is talking up the health care law, saying it is working. hi comments come one day after the house approved the so-called employer mandate on health care, and also approved a delay for when individuals will be required to have health insurance or face fines. today texas governor rick perry signed sweeping new abortion restrictions. that sparked weeks of protests. the measure bans after 20 weeks and restricts them to abortion center. "glee" co-star jane lynch

choked up when she spoke on "the today" show. >> i don't think he left one day unlived. he was a real bright light in our family. we've lost a really great guy. >> he died from a combination of alcohol and heroin. we'll have more later in the program. well, the emmy nominations are in. a little history was matter this morning out of l.a. for the first time, two netflix ear series received nominations "house of cards" and "arrested development." outgoing comedy series "30 rock" along with its two lead actors all received nods. well, gas prices are up for the 11th straight day across the country. aside from hawaii and alaska, california became the first state this week to top $4 a gallon for regular gas, and experts say price coos soar another ten cents by august.

the average nationwide price for a gallon of regular, $3.67. now to wall street and more attention on ben bernanke. kayla tausche joins us. good morning. >> good morning, tamron. a group of bipartisan senators has reached an agreement to keep the interest rates on student loans lower until 2015. 2 comes two weeks after an automatic rate hike kicked in, doubling the interest rates to 6.8%. the -- on capitol hill today, federal reserve chairman ben bernanke beginning a second day of testimony. he has said the fed will continue to aid the u.s. economy under its fully strengthened. stock markets are calmed by those comments. the dow the broadest measure, just hitting another all-time high. tamron. >> thank you, kayla. starting this fall, the costs will go from $20 to $25 for checked baggage for tickets

86 for napa and 66, kind of a cool day in san francisco. meanwhile, just about right in san francisco. 82 dreechlts warmer this weekend and thunderstorms arrive sunday into monday. your latest savannah? al, thank you. now to the grows outrage over the "rolling stone" cover featuring boston bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev. we told you about this on wednesday. nbc's kristen dahlgren is in boston this morning with the fall out. kristen, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the issue doesn't officially hit news stands until friday, but some stores are officially refusing to sell it. we're here where the bombing happened. months later, as you can imagine, the pain is still fresh. a lot of people here outraged over what they say is a killer on the cover. dzhokhar tsarnaev staring out from the cover of "rolling stone" magazine, the accused bomber getting what some say is rock star treatment.

>> i can't imagine what they were thinking. >> reporter: in boston, where three bystanders and one police officers were killed in the april bombing and its aftermath, reaction was instant and angry. >> he has no business being on "rolling stone" or any other magazine. why publicize it? >> reporter: transit officer richard donohue was seriously wounded in a shootout with tamerlan and his brother. in a statement on his facebook page, donahue called the cover thoughtless at best. other victims contacted by nbc news didn't want to add to the publicity, but their supporters lashed out. boston's mayor thomas menino. >> why? why would we publicize a guy who destroyed people's lives? makes no sense to me. very poor taste. backlash. boycottrollingstone began trending on twitter. stores like cvs and walgreen's announced they wouldn't carry the issue. in an interview on national

public radio, "rolling stone's" managing editor defended the magazine's decision. >> this is a person who is the same age as many of our readers, when to his peer group seemed like one of them. and that's what we thought made this story so powerful and disturbing. and it's in no way to endorse or glorify what he did. we're trying to explain it. >> reporter: the picture from his twitter profile is also featured on the front page of "the new york times" in may. "rolling stone" has had controversial covers before. in 1970, charlotte manson was featured. others equate the shaggy hair and direct stare to this 1971 "rolling stone" cover of jim morrison, rock royalty. >> they're trying to make him look like a rock staff. here's a horrible person who did a horrible thing. >> reporter: it controversy sells, a lot of people talking about the issue. we're not hearing about the

article about what turned a promising and popular student into an accused mass murderer. but that cover, savannah, has a lot of people upset. >> all right. kristen dahlgren. thank you. officer richard donahue, who you saw in the piece, is with us now. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> first and most importantly, how are you feeling? i know you just got out of the hospital last month after being shot in the standoff with the tsarnaev brothers. how are you doing? >> getting better every day. you know, can't complain. it's -- baby steps, and we're hopefully making our way to a full recovery. >> your life obviously changed that day in an instant. when you saw this cover, did you have an immediate reaction to it? >> i saw it late tuesday before i went to bed. saw a little on facebook and some social media. and you know, at first i shrugged it off. then when i woke up in the morning, it started really spreading through everything.

and you know, i took a closer look. you know, i made a statement about it later that day. >> and what do you think about it? obviously you know the backlash some people feel -- feel it glorifies the alleged bomber. what do you think? >> i hope it doesn't glorify him. you know, they could have picked anybody else. there's a number of people they could have picked for a rock or entertainment magazine besides an alleged bomber. i hope it doesn't glorify him and make it so other people follow in his footsteps. >> do you feel that it does because it's "rolling stone" or because of the picture? i mean, what specifically rubs you the wrong way about it? >> well, the fact that it is "rolling stone" is a bit of a surprise. you know, be -- look the rock star imagery. looks like the jim morrison cover. so -- that was just a surprise. >> well, richard donahue, it's

good to have you here and bring your perspective to this issue. thank you very much for being here. >> all right. thank you. >> i want to bring in donnie deutsche quickly about this. i mean, "rolling stone" in the business of selling magazines. i don't think anyone has an issue with the content of the article itself. there's something about there cover that really strikes a very -- emotional chord for so many people. >> yeah, look. everybody, all of us obviously, certainly police officers, we all have our outrageous feel being that is justified on every level. but the outrage over it is also set against the backdrop of the very reason he did it. he looks like any kid that would be on the cover of "rolling stone." this is a kid who five years ago was a popular kid. the message they're trying to say to us is we need to look within. it scares us, it repulses us, but that's the importance of it. the fact that he could have looked like a kid -- it's not this distant terrorism. it's within us. and i think journalistically

that's what they're trying to do. does everyone have the right to be outraged? of course. >> is there a thought that may have been the intent but they underestimated the reaction? >> no. that was their intent from a marketing and journalistic point of view. and as i said, this is a youth culture magazine. what they're trying to say, the very thing we're outraged about, is the same nerve that's, wait a second, that looks like a kid that could have ended up a rock star. that's not somebody with a turban. that's a part of our youth culture, and that's the frightening part. and that's what -- we're having this discussion. that's what's great about it. >> very quickly, do you think the fact that this has stirred controversy is ultimately good for magazine sales? >> of course it's good for magazine sales. more importantly it's good for the discussion that needs to continue. it's easy to walk away two months later, and we're not. >> donnie deutsche. thank you very much. over to matt. >> thank you. now politics and the decision by liz cheney, the daughter of former vice president dick cheney, to run for the u.s. senate.

good morning to you. it is 7:26. i'm marla tellez. an 8-year-old girl was shot and killed inside her home in oakland on wilson avenue near interstate 580. around 11:00 last night someone knocked on the door of the apartment and opened fire once the door was opened. when police arrived, they found four people on the ground. the 8-year-old girl died at the hospital. a 7-year-old girl, a 4-year-old boy and a grandmother were also injured. police don't know why the apartment was targeted. they have not made any arrests. a staff number at little acorn preschool is under investigation for alleged child abuse this morning, accused of

7:30 now on a thursday morning. it is july 18th, 2013, and it is going to be another scorcher. day five of this blistering heat wave from here in new york city, the nation's capital, and i think they said up to 48 states feeling the heat this morning. good morning, everyone. i'm savannah guthrie inside studio 1a. coming up, we're going live to natalie morales on the wait for kate. there's some word this morning that natalie, while she has "great expectations," may be at the wrong hospital. a little more on that just ahead. and why is something that mcdonald's did to try to help its workers being blasted by many of them this morning? we'll have that story. first, we'll head over to matt. it's been nearly 17 months since 17-year-old trayvon martin

was shot and killed and five days since george zimmerman was found not guilty of second degree murder, a verdict that's led to ongoing protests in cities around the country and new debates about race and guns in this country. tracy martin and sybrina fulton are trayvon martin's parents, jahvaris fulton is his brother. good morning to everybody. we haven't heard. it's five days now since the verdict, what's your reaction? >> still shocked, still in disbelief. we felt in our hearts that we were going to get a conviction. we thought that the killer of our unarmed child was going to be convicted of the crime that he committed. >> you say shocked and disbelief. miss fulton, reasonable doubt is something that we're hearing from some of the jurors. do you understand how they might have found reasonable doubt? >> i don't understand if they were looking at it from

trayvon's point of view because he was a teenager. he was scared. he did run. as far as if he ran home or not, if somebody was chasing me, i don't think i would run home and bring them to my house. >> we have heard now from juror b-37, and she has told us some things about what went on in the deliberation room and what they were thinking in the trial. she was asked if she thought that george zimmerman racially profiled trayvon, she said no. she was asked if she thought race played a role in this tragedy, she said no. what's your reaction to that? >> obviously, any time you have a person that makes an assumption that a person is up to no good, there's some type of profiling there. was he racially profiled? i think that, if trayvon had been white, this wouldn't have never happened. so, obviously, race played some type of role.

>> this from the prosecution. ben, i'll let you talk in one second. this from the prosecution during their presentation. "this case is not about race. this is about right and wrong. what if it was trayvon martin who shot and killed george zimmerman? what would your verdict be? that's how you know it's not about race." that's from the prosecution. do you think that had an impact on this jury? >> i think they cut down to the heart of the matter, matt. if the roles were reversed, what would the verdict have been? george zimmerman, the defense played that witness who said her place had been burglarized by an african-american teen. so in some way they tried to suggest that this allowed for any black male walking through that neighborhood, the neighborhood watch to profile and follow him, and that's not right. >> let me ask it in a different way, then. do you as trayvon's parents think that the prosecution handled the issue of race in a proper way during the presentation of this case?

>> matt, i think it's hard for them. they were parents wanting justice, and the prosecutors have a strategy -- >> let me put it this way. were you happy with the way the prosecution handled the case in general? do you have any concerns about that? >> we were happy they brought the case. a lot of prosecutors wouldn't even touch the case. so we applaud the prosecutor's office for bringing the case. a the lot of people said no. >> let me ask you more about b-37, the juror who said that, when the 911 tape was played and the much disputed cries for help that took place before the shot that killed your son, she said she was sure that the voice crying for help on that tape was george zimmerman's voice. >> and i totally disagree. she can only make that assumption because she may have heard george zimmerman speak in the court. she never had a chance to hear trayvon's voice. we know in our hearts that that was our child screaming for help. >> miss lton, here's something

mr. crump said. after the jury was selected, it's important that they know, meaning the jurors, trayvon martin's parents have put their faith in the justice system. they're praying the justice system doesn't fail them. they want justice for their son. do you think the legal system failed trayvon? >> i think it failed trayvon to a certain degree. i think we let the process take its course. we didn't get the verdict that we were looking for because we wanted him to be held accountable. our focus has continued to change. first it was for the arrest. then it was for a conviction. so now we moved on to a different focus. but, yes, i think we were disappointed. >> would you say anything to the jurors? do you have anything you'd like to say to them? obviously, they tried their hardest. but would you like to say something to them? >> i really don't have anything personal to say. i just didn't understand how can you let a killer of an unarmed

child go free? what would your verdict would have been had it been your child? there's no one in this case at all. i want them to put them in our shoes. >> streets in some cities around the country have been filled with protesters since this verdict was given out saturday night, miss fulton. some have had violence in them. what would you say to people who feel the need to voice their opinion about this case and this verdict? what would you say to people in the streets? >> we have always maintained to do things decent and in order. we think the protests should be peaceful protests. we're not saying for them not to protest because they have a right to protest. they have a right to be heard. but we just want to make sure that it is peaceful, that nobody gets hurt, that nobody gets

arrested, that you don't damage your own property. >> your family's faith, you rely on faith in hard times. does your faith allow you to forgive george zimmerman? >> i think that the forgiveness is like a healing process. forgiveness takes time. the bible says that you have to forgive and forget, but also the healing process is a long process. the forgiving process is a long process. >> george zimmerman's attorneys say he's facing death threats, he's in hiding. some are comparing his situation right now to casey anthony, who was cleared of murder charges for his daughter, who's living in hiding and is an outcast. do you think that's what the system intends for someone who is acquitted of charges like these? >> we don't know about that, but what we do know is about the victims. we sit on the victims' seat.

is this the intent for the justice system to have for victims? it's sending a terrible message to other little black and brown boys that you can't walk fast, you can't walk slow. so what do they do? i mean, how do you get home without people knowing or either assuming that you're doing something wrong? trayvon wasn't doing anything wrong. >> would you like to see federal charges brought against george zimmerman? will you file a civil suit against him? >> we would like for the federal government to look into it and weigh all of the options. we just -- as parents, we just feel that there could have been something more done. >> and more for you to do? >> definitely. we have a lot of work ahead of us. we're working diligently with the trayvon martin foundation, a foundation that we've co-founded, and some of the

risks. nbc's katie tur is in vancouver. >> good morning. heroin use is on the rise nationally as what was once cord a hard core urban drug is spreading to college campuses and the suburbs. now as many are mourning the death of corey montieth, some are wondering if this will serve as a wakeup call as to who just is using the drug. >> he spoke openly and honestly about his struggle with drugs and alcohol. still his successful career and clean cut persona seemed at odds for someone who does heroin. >> i can relate more to him than i could the amy winehouses of the world. you see it coming for a while. people i grew up with, last time i saw them, they were doing great. they were holding down a job. next time i hear about them, they're dead. >> katie martin is part of a new wave of heroin addicts from suburban middle class communities. she's been clean now for eight months but at her lowest point

she was living in a car, shooting up to 60 bags of heroin a day. like corey, katie martin doesn't seem like the type. >> if you told me in high school that i would be a heroin addict, i would have laughed at you. >> growing up in suburban new jersey, martin says heroin seemed part of another world until one night when a boyfriend introduced it to her at a party. >> i snorted it. i got sick. but i loved that feeling. so i did it again. and again. and again. until i was putting a needle in my arm. >> reporter: experts say many young addicts, 39% according to a university of washington study, start out with prescription drugs that mimic heroin's effects. >> the thing is that the pain pills for a while they were pretty easy to get. now they're harder to get. they're expensive. heroin is cheap and widely available. >> it's spreading like wildfire. like a joke almost how many addicts are from new jersey that came from upper middle class families. >> reporter: corey's friends and

good morning. good to see you. >> good morning, matt. thank you for having me. >> i it this strange thing about this is perception. when i was a kid or teenager in my 20s, you heard someone doing heroin, that person had a look. you could almost pick them out of a room. and it doesn't seem to hold true anymore. is there a new face of heroin use? >> yeah, you got to throw out the rule book. i have the same experience. when i was growing up, when i was in high school, you know, if someone was smoking marijuana, they were on the edge. now it's just accepted. in junior high and high school, if you're using prescription pain medication or even heroin, that's kind of the new norm. and it's very disturbing. >> why is that link? why does it exist between prescription drug use and eventual heroin use? >> well, i mean it's pretty easy to understand. prescription drugs are regulated and so they're a little more difficult to get. plus, they're more expensive. so what happens is if people

start experimenting with that and they develop a habit, it's too expensive. they're going to have to start robbing and stealing. heroin is easily accessible, less expensive, and you get the same if not a better high. >> i want to talk about that easily accessible part in just a second. let me give you statistics. 90% of teen heroin addicts are white. heroin is easier to buy than prescription drugs. and by the way, drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental deaths in the u.s. you mention easily accessible. where are kids finding heroin? >> the easy answer, anywhere. i mean it's in the schools. it's in the communities. and these aren't people that have to go to what would typically be understood as heroin areas, inner cities, urban areas. this is out in the suburbs. it's out in the rural areas. what i tell people is if you don't know of the heroin problem right now, you're about to see it. >> david ray, thank you very much for your input on this. i appreciate it.

>> my pleasure, matt. >> let's go to savannah. >> thank you. we go to the great kate wait. her reported due date has come and gone leaving some to wonder if the delay is because the royal baby is the couple's first child. natalie is outside st. mary's hospital with more on this. natalie, good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. first there is some question after this whole week of waiting here upon actually waiting at the wrong hospital. we'll have more on that in a moment. yes, as you mentioned, it does appear as if kate may be a bit late. and now the queen is even chiming in saying she's hoping for some good news and soon. >> i'd very much like it to arrive. >> reporter: now even the queen is weighing in. this child is, of course, will and kate's first. but does that explain the apparent delay? >> the thing about the due date is there are only 1 in 20 women

give birth on that date. >> reporter: women may be more likely to have an overdue pregnancy if they had prior overdue pregnancies, the baby is a boy or in kate's case, it's first child. what we do know is any labor after certainly 37 weeks is considered to be full term. the chances is she is already past that. if she goes more than ten days over her due date, then i'm quite sure that her doctors already talking seriously about inducing her. >> reporter: according to princess diana aeg biographer, williams' mother was induce the because she couldn't take the heat in more ways than one. she says in the book she had to be induced because sh he couldn't handle the press pressure any longer. what was she going through at that point? >> well, at the time it was the heat of the summer. you know, towards of end of her pregnancy. last thing they want is waddling around in the heat. william was well cooked.

>> reporter: no doubt this british's summer heat wave is making kate's wait a little more uncomfortable. now kate is still believed to be up in buckleberry at her parents house, enjoying a little peace and quiet there. there are reports and speculation this morning that if she goes into labor could she possibly deliver the baby there nearby at the royal hospital in reading? that has always been a contingency plan says the palace. they still expect she'll have the time to make it here to deliver in the privacy of st. mary's hospital where william and harry were also delivered. savannah, back to you. >> all right. natalie, you mentioned the barkscheyer hospital in natalie. don't be mad but michelle kaczynski is there right now just in case. are there signs? is there anything that makes you think that maybe kate is going there? >> we're hoping to see this baby first. we want the first glimgs of tps

this child. this is the royal barkshar hospital where kate herself was born. it's right around the corner really from the mansion that her parents just bought in buckleberry, the town where kate grew up. royal watchers thinks where she spent her past weekend with her family and where they think she is still is now. if she's about to go into labor any day now or any minute now, this would be the closest hospital. the thing is this is supposedly just a contingency plan. if there was some emergency or if labor progressed extraordinarily quickly, this is a public hospital. there is no fancy private wing like there is where kate has been planning to have the royal baby. though something tells me they can work something up for the duchess. we're about an hour and a half drive from london. so likely that would be plenty of time especially with a police escort if kate went into labor and there were no problems. we asked the hospital what exactly does this contingency plan entail? they said we're not even talking about it because as far as we're

here, the girls are wreaking havoc on their hair. >> we have four different ideas what we can do. let's start here. you have flat ironed her hair? >> one of the things about arta, you can see her hair is naturally curly. one of the things we always talk about with naturally wavy hair, you're fighting frizz. even if you have straight hair, you're fighting frizz. you want to make sure the flat iron you use, look for two different things. you look for ceramic, which helps even heat distribution. and also look for permalene. it's negatively charged and helps positively charmged hair. you add a little serum first. this is heat protection, which is vital. you rub that through. >> wait for it to dry? >> no, just go right in. you want to use a drubrush inst of using a comb. you take a brush, use the flat iron all the way through, and then smooth. >> flat iron really holds the style. >> it does hold the style. most of the time, what women do

is take a section like this, and, oh, i'm going to pull my hair out. you don't get it smooth enough. you have to take a half second to get that smoothness. >> and next we have sarah. going to take a different approach with the fuller look. >> sarah's problem is she doesn't have any volume. we know what happens to girls. you're always talking about my hair's flat. my hair doesn't have any movement. what you want to do is use something like a dry shampoo or even baby powder to help combat that. this is how you apply that. take a section. add the dry shampoo straight to the roots. you can see how much volume it gives. >> does that absorb the moisture? >> it actually absorbs the oil. if you have very oily hair, very oily scalp, this helps to add volume and soak up oil. and you fine haired girls are always concerned about that. >> they're also fine like our sarah. full body. great. your next idea is to pin it up. we throw it in a ponytail a lot of times.

>> ponytails for girls all the time. the one thing we talk about with the ponytail is what's going to provoke a different sensibility. the higher the ponytail is a little bit more cheerleader and the lower is more sophisticated. with whitney, we put a ponytail in. we'll take the ponytail to the next level. we're actually going to put in what is called a top knot. all you need is a ponytail holder for it. you put your top knot in. you actually pin it. then after you pin it, what's great about it is we're going to take it to the next level again because that's what it's about today, this morning. you can take a hair accessory. all you have to do is just clip this right on here. >> okay, great. we're running out of time. that's so cute. thank you. >> then we have braids. braids are super, super, super hot right now. we just launched a braid bar in my florida salon. this particular braid is called

and the fit has evolved. in the '90s, it was a little long and blousy. lengths are coming back up, and guys are deciding i should wear a suit that fits. >> shorter jackets, narrower pants, get rid of the pleats. >> true story, absolutely. go with the trimmer look, and you know what, know your size. >> most guys wear suits that are too big. >> get measured. go to a tailor. go to a shop. ask a sales associate to measure you. what you think may fit may be a size big. just go down a size, give it a shot. >> give us some examples. we've got peter here, right? this is the new power suit. what are the features of this? >> everything here is classic but current. that's what i have to say. this is a club monitor suit, a really hot brand right now. it fits perfectly. it's all about proportion here. the tie tied with a forehand, love that knot. that's what you're wearing. the gray suit, showing a little cuff, crisp pocket square. everything will be in style five to ten years from now, but it looks incredibly current. >> and that jacket is two or

three inches shorter than what you have in your closet from five years ago. >> it probably is, and it looks great. the trousers are also trimmer. >> thanks so much. there you go. let's go to max. what kind of suit is he wearing? >> this is a banana republic suit. it the a navy suit, very traditional, cut very well. he's wearing a suit because he wants to, not because he necessarily has to. we've got him with a sports shirt, gingham, less form al. i think it's a great look for a guy who wants to add a layer of style to his wardrobe. no socks, fun look, suede loafer, not for the workplace that requires a suit, but for the workplace that appreciates a guy who puts in a little extra effort. we love that, a gilt man. >> let's move over to josh now. this is a more casual suit. >> it sure is. you could say he's dressing down the suit. he may be dressing up the polo. the key here is the lines between casual and formal are really blurred right now in men's wear.

a company with deep roots in boston, we believe this with the right decision out of respect for the victims of attack and their loved ones." we all lived in new york. any time i saw anything about 9/11 that in any way elevated or tried to explain away the acts of terrorists, it always offended me a little bit. having said that, this photograph has appeared before in the new york times and "the washington post," and the "rolling stone" makes the case, we're talking about a kid who could be anybody in america, and that's the point of the piece. >> i think it's the placement and the context of the picture. it bears a striking resemblance to that famous "rolling stone" jim morrison cover, and people feel like you're glorifying him. >> it's a hot topic, and that's what their job is to do, to make people -- >> to sell magazines. >> and they had charles manson on years ago. it's not unusual for them. >> in fact, there have been a number of controversial magazine covers, at least ones that have been kind of designed to get

>> reporter: there is some question this morning because kate is spending some time in buck buckleberry, obviously enjoying peace and relaxation before baby comes, whether she would deliver up there at the hospital. but actually, we are told by the palace this is still the place. st. mary's is most likely going to be the place where she delivers. it's the place where william delivered and harry delivered. it seems that, most likely, all plans are in place still as a go here at this hospital. it is more private. the royal barkshire hospital in reading cannot offer the privacy that this hospital does. so that is just a contingency plan. if there were an emergency, if she would have no time to real ly -- i can't see what you're seeing. >> we're just seeing the royal berkshire hospital. >> obviously, a beautiful hospital, but it's a public hospital and not very private. i think i'm in the right place.

>> i really think you don't give in just to avoid the tantrum in public. it's really important to let your child know. you hear them. you have empathy for them. i know you want this lollipop. we're not having it now. you don't have to go into a whole story. you can say, but i understand you want it. that crying is not going to help. here, you can distract your child if you can. that's really a good thing to try and do. don't worry if everybody else is looking at you because they have been in that situation. you can sometimes make a joke. if you don't take it too seriously yourself and think everyone is judging you as a bad parent, you can say, anybody else been here? anybody else have an idea? that will, in a way, stop it and get the kid to look somewhere else. >> it's normal for kids to want things. it's not a bad thing. >> let's just say i really feel you can't make children feel bad about wanting. we live in what i call a want industrial complex. every time we turn on the tv, every time we go down the grocery store shelves, it's about want, want, want. what i say to my kids is it's okay to want, but that doesn't mean we get.

taking a look at headlines, senators from both parties have taken a big step toward keeping student loan rates down, at least for now. rates on federal stafford loans doubled earlier this month to 6.8%. under a bipartisan deal, rates on undergraduate loans would be 3.85%, and grad students could get loans at 5.4% through 2015. rates could climb after that when the economy improves. the white house supports that deal. today president obama is talking up the health care law, saying that it's working and resulting in insurance company rebates being paid to some customers. his comments come one day after the house approved a delay in the so-called employer mandate on health care and also approved a delay for when individual americans will be required to

student. that person is now on administrative leave. parents have been notified. los gatos-based netflix make willing history this morning. its exclusive show "house of cards" was just nominated for three prime time emmy awards. the online-only series was nominated for besting an tore, best actress and best drama. other nominees was "breaking bad," downtown abbey and "game of thrones." more weather and traffic after this break. what advice do you give for former homemakers looking to enter back. >> this is a common one. the kids left and they say now what? >> i think it's important to focus on what she loved about her career before she was a stay-at-home mom. if they can focus on those energizing things, she can bring back the confidence she needs to go back into the workforce. >> what does she say when she explains what she's been doing for the last 18 years? >> i think the conversation needs to be what is the job i have? and what is the job i'm transitioning into? instead of this big uber-"i'm entering back into the workforce, a club i don't belong to" it's really i belong. i did it. everybody is doing it. just write the job description you currently have as the head of her household. what are the skills? what are the talents? what departments is she managing? create that story when going into a new employer. >> and what about guilt.

>> it's huge. you have to realize that guilt indicates something, a message that you think you're doing something wrong, and she's not doing anything wrong by focusing on her kids. she has to have a shift in her thinks about what it is that she's doing, and let go of the guilt. >> speaking of guilt. gerald gene is 50 years old living in yonkers, new york, with her family. >> as a mother of three children under 20, i sometimes find it hard to focus on my own health and well-being, because i'm putting my children first. how can i make time throughout the day for myself without feeling guilty. >> that's a common one. >> i think geraldine desperately needs to give herself permission to have fun. when you have children that are expecting your time and energy, really all they want is a happy mother, so they see her days by putting a lot of focus and attention on her own well-being will raise her energy and

where? for life's bleachable moments. we've all been there. you're all ready for that vacation, and everything that can go wrong does. your flight is delayed, your hotel looks absolutely nothing like the online photos. >> to help us, conde nast traveler contributing editor, lisa. >> first of all, you get bumped from your flight, what criteria does the airline use to bump people? >> it's happening more and more because flights are oversold. generally, if you check in late, if you don't have an assigned seat, and also if you pay rock bottom fare, you're a perfect candidate to be bumped from an overfilled flight. so avoid that. also, if you are involuntarily bumped, and that happens too

because flights are overfilled, you do have some rights. you're entitled to compensation from the airline. so definitely ask for that. and also insist you get an assigned seat on the next available flight. there's no limbo for you on stand-by. >> you get something like a voucher for another flight or take care of your hotel? >> oftentimes, the form of compensation is a voucher toward the cost of a future flight. you are, however, entitled to ask for the cash equivalent. >> what do you do if your flight is cancelled all together? show up to the airport, and they cancel it. >> sometimes the flight is completely cancelled. what you should not do is go ahead and book another flight on a different carrier and assume the carrier you were originally going to fly on will reimburse you because they probably will not. you should get on the phone with the airline and try to rebook the new flight on the phone while also standing in line at the counter. whatever happens first is going to be your best bet. >> a lot of people, the airline is two hours ahead of time. a lot of people push their luck, get there ten minutes ahead before the flight takes off. are you out of luck at this point? >> believe it or not, you may

have a chance of getting on a flight. there's a flat tire rule, the two-hour rule, not a lot of people know about it. it's not a rule. it's used on a discretionary basis. if you have a flat tire or there's a traffic accident, something beyond your control, and you really mack a concerted effort to get there on time, if you still show up at the airport within two hours of the departure, oftentimes, they will put you free of charge on stand by for the next available flight. don't give up. >> how about lost luggage in it's the worst thing that can happen, especially on vacation when you need your stuff. what are the rights? >> 26 million bags have gone lost in the past year. it's a lot of luggage. so checked bags are always the first to get lost because they're out of your control. if you, for example, have to gate check a carry-on bag, and that's happening more and more too as flights are fuller, there's some precautions you can take. always carry your valuables with you. if that means carrying a carry-on within the carry-on, do that. what you don't want to do is leave anything valuable outside of your actual realm.

the flavors of trinidad. we were asking how to pronounce your name, it's timon from timon and pumba, and you got balou from the jungle book. you've got this different fusion of flavors. >> my dad is from trinidad and tobago. we grew up eating this all the time. local fish, this is snapper. beautiful color. >> could you use any fish in this? if you didn't want to use a snapper. >> use any local fish, whatever you get and is easy for you. what we do is just dredge the fish in a little bit of flour, or if you don't want the flour, anything, gluten allergy or anything, you could do regular pan sear. >> you salted it first? >> little bit of salt. you could salt and pepper your flour also, make sure it's seasoned properly, and apply the fish to the pan and pan sear it. >> how long do you do on both sides? >> two to three minutes on each side. it's very, very simple.

after the fish is seared, which we have here, beautiful golden brown, you just remove it it from the pan. then you add your other ingredients, which is just a little bit of garlic, onion, peppers, a little bit of fresh thyme, and oregano. everything goes into the pot. >> using the oil? >> using the oil. that's the very important thing. you want all the oils from the fish. that's going to character and adds all the flavor to your stew. >> a lot of great color too. >> it's beautiful. styling. tropical, great colors. we've added a little bit of stock, vegetable or chicken, whatever you prefer. a little bit of white wine. >> yum. >> we add the fish back to the stew. we'll also add some tomatoes and scallions. just that way when the tomatoes break down. they help thicken the stew. and you allow that to cook for about 18 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of your fish. >> just on the stove top? >> exactly. just on the stove top, or you

put the whole casserole in the oven. that's what you have here. you have the beautiful fish. it's broken down. the peppers, the onions, so sweet, and it flavored everything so well. >> is that yucca? >> this is yucca, actually, also known as casaba. you see it all over the caribbean and south america. we boiled it with a little bit of garlic, onion, and water. that's it. very, very simple. >> and there's potatoes as well? >> potato or whatever you like. you can actually even eat it with rice. we put a little bit of that over the stew and finish with a little bit of cilantro and beautiful fresh lime, and bon appetit, you have a beautiful caribbean stewed fish. >> you eat this for lunch or dinner? >> lunch. dinner is great. it's nice. >> would you like to be served? >> oh, that's fantastic. terrific. timon balou, thank you so much.

is that something -- >> it's a chic drug right now. >> in 2008 prescription painkillers overtook marijuana as the most common gateway drugs for teens. and that leads to heroin. that opiate addiction, that's a tough one to kick. these days it's common. >> is rehab what you really have to do? i know cory went through it, but i think a lot of people may have concerns, maybe someone they know is using. is there -- what's the best route to go? >> they need to get help. if they can't do it on their own, they need to get help from elsewhere. the key is not just going to rehab, but when you come out. we have a safe place that changes your life. with cory, he went back to the old place he used to be in. so all the cues were there for him to start using again. >> that's an interesting question. they say he almost lived a

double life. where at work, he never used, he was clean, he was ready. was it the work that was giving him a purpose to get up every morning? when he didn't have that he would use? >> i think it was a lot of hard work for him not to use. i heard people say it took a lot of time and effort to keep him clean even when he was -- the wonderful thing now is we do have treatments that work. we have medications that work. there is help. you have to want it. >> it's not just heroin or marijuana. it is painkiller. i saw something a couple weeks ago saying prescription painkillers kill more women than ovarian cancer does. what is it? women don't want to feel any pain so we'll take medicine more so than we need? >> well, i think that first of all, there's overprescription. doctors need a lot of education. there's a statistic that walking in for the first complaint of back pain, most people get a
