5:00 am
and it's early on a friday. that means some folks are getting off of work. as the road crews clear, we have some slowing. i'll show the latest and where you have to watch out coming up. we still have the fog to deal with this morning. not too bad just yet. we are expecting some to develop. we'll show you where today, looking good in the upper 50s, headed towards the 90s. we'll have the full weekend forecast in moments. oh, to be in london this morning, as we give you a live look. yes, it seems like the world is on royal baby watch on this friday, july 19th. will she have it, will the heir to the throne be a boy or a girl? so many questions. this is "today in the bay." good morning. it's 5:00. we begin with breaking news in the east bay where an armed robbery suspect is dead, shot and killed by an off-duty
5:01 am
sheriff's deputy in alameda overnight. the other suspect is still on the loose this morning. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live at the bond fair market where the shooting happened. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. talk about timing, two armed men walked into a market late last night, and there just happened to be an off-duty alameda sheriff's deputy inside. there was a confrontation in the store. he ended up shooting and killing one of them. may have shot the second one. so right now, what deputies are doing and the sheriff's department is, they're checking area hospitals to see if perhaps that second suspect walked in looking for treatment because of gunshot wounds. now, this happened last night around 10:30 at the bond bon fair market. police say they started getting 911 calls of a robbery in progress. they tell me there were actually two employees inside the store at the time. one in the back in the stockroom, the other the cashier who came face to face with these
5:02 am
guys. but again, the deputy off-duty happened to be there. they got into a confrontation. he shot one of the masked men and may have shot the second one. and this isn't the first time the bonfair market was robbed. >> the store was robbed eight days ago with similar m.o., and again it was an armed robbery at that time, too, the same time of the evening. >> reporter: alameda police tell us they brought out dogs overnight looking for that second suspect. they also canvassed the area. this is off of high street near santa clara. they've interviewed a number of witnesses. again, still looking for that second suspect this morning. and what they tell me is that, something to know, if you're coming through this area, that high street, the one behind us here, this is the main thoroughfare through alameda, and also to get between alameda and oakland, high street will be closed until at least noon today while they complete their investigation. reporting live in alameda, christie smith, "today in the

bay." >> thank you, christie. we'll learn today what killed a 16-year-old girl on an asiana flight 214. the coroner's expected to release a full autopsy report later this morning. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in san mateo. bob, we've already heard she may have been alive when she was hit by one of the first responders. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura, yes, you are correct, that's what the coroner's office here in san mateo believes. they believe 16-year-old initially survived the crash of flight 214, that she was alive outside the plane, that she died of blunt force trauma when she was run over by one of the vehicles responding to the scene, possibly a fire truck. this is according to reporting done by the "san francisco chronicle," not yet confirmed by the coroner's office. we expect that confirmation during a news conference scheduled for later this morning at 10:00, if not sooner. what's not clear is how she got out of the aircraft. did she escape on her own?
5:04 am
did someone help her out? or was she ejected during the crash, like her friend who was killed? first responders eventually found her body near the left wing, covered in firefighting foam, raising another question, were first responders even aware she was there when she was accidentally run over, or did the foam conceal her body and herself? her family and the families of the other two people killed did reportedly meet yesterday with the san mateo county coroner to receive explanations of how their loved ones died. again, the coroner's office here on the peninsula expecting to make an announcement on the conclusions of how she died at a news conference, again scheduled later this morning at 10:00. reporting live in san mateo, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. 5:04. we have a follow-up to the richmond gang rape trial. both defendants will be sentenced august 15th. marcelles peter and jose montano
5:05 am
were found guilty yesterday, for the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl outside a homecoming dance. two other men connected to the case took a plea deal. two more are awaiting trial. 5:05. the san francisco crime lab technician who pleaded guilty to cocaine possession is expected to be sentenced today. deborah madden took a plea deal that reduced her charges to misdemeanors carrying a prison sentence up to one year. she went to trial twice on more serious felony charges of stealing cocaine. both trials ended in hung juries. the charges against madden led to the dismisal of hundreds of criminal cases on claims the evidence was not tainted. police in the east bay are trying to hunt down several squatters who reportedly armed and -- were armed and living inside a $3 million walnut creek home. officers arrived last night to kick out the squatters. when they went inside, they found several guns, including an assault weapon. the home is reportedly owned by an investment group.
5:06 am
one of the investors called police after he stopped by to find the locks changed and people living inside. the squatters offered up a fake lease and said they were paying the rent. police arrested two people, but they're now looking for several more whose names appear on that fake lease. mountainview police are looking for a brazen burglar who broke into a man's hotel while he was taking a shower. they say when they got into the room on the el camino real on highway 85 yesterday morning by pulling the screens off the window. police say he slid the window open and entered the room, the thief did. taking off with the laptop, ipad, the keys to a rental car, which was stolen when he got outside. so far, police have made no arrests. happening now, thousands of homes are under evacuation orders near palm springs as the massive mountain fire continues to spread. about 4,000 houses, condos, cabins, and several hotels in idyllwild and surrounding communities are threatened. the fire is forcing many into
5:07 am
palm springs where some hotels are actually offering discounts to those who don't have a place to stay now. a palo alto family vacationing in palm springs says the fire is making them nervous. >> we were kind of anxious at first, because we don't really know the area so well. we didn't know whether to come down or stay up that way. >> the fire has burned almost 23,000 acres and at this point it is just 15% contained. authorities say the fire was human-caused, but they are not saying whether it was accidental or intentional. >> certainly having a tough go of it, as meteorologist christina loren, you know that area well. >> i do. it's scary, because we're talking about the fire now, about two miles away from the western border of palm springs. i do want to talk about what's happening, because the weather will make an impact. look at this, showers on the radar in the area this morning. now, this is monsoonal moisture. so it's a really tricky forecast, whether or not the weather is going to help or
5:08 am
hinder the fight. i can tell you now the showers are good for now, but we're also going to include the lightning strikes once we accumulate the daytime heating later on. the growth potential remains extreme at this point, and that's already a very costly fire for this state. we want to be on the best fire safety here in the bay area. as we know now, resources are running on the thin side. the fire elevation -- excuse me, our fire chances will be elevated as we head throughout the weekend with lightning moving up into the bay area and also going to get hot around here. we want to make sure everybody is ready. we want to protect the beautiful, beautiful land we get to live in in the bay area. 86 in livermore. 90 in antioch. you'll notice the difference in livermore, 93 there. 92 on the way to concord. that's not the oy fire burning in the state. we've got one just to our south near big sur. we'll talk about that one coming up. and what you can expect from those thunderstorms once they move into the bay area. that's coming up first.
5:09 am
first, a check on the drive. it's a friday, but there's always something going on, mike. >> yeah, a lot of work going on, and a lot of it is clearing now. on 880, the volume of traffic is starting to bump up. but it's getting there. a smooth flow now as you head throughout the area. construction cleared and north of there, talking about both directions between the coliseum and 980, had patches of slowing as well over the last half hour. christie smith talking about high street being affected. that's only at santa clara. however, high street, the bridge itself, is opened as well as fruit vale and webster and posy, cleared back and forth between downtown. easy access to the island, just watch that scene. over here, the peninsula, construction in many spots. 280 clearing the crews. and the travel times not a big deal. we're looking at -- oh, my goodness, the miles per hour is totally wrong.
5:10 am
do not go over 1,000 miles per hour on a roadway. looking at the live pictures for palo alto, a nice, smooth drive for palo alto, considerably slower than, like, 500 miles per hour. they're about the limit. back to you. >> a quirky friday around here. >> oh, yeah, thanks, mike. 5:10. a late-night skateboarding accident sends a teenager to the hospital. and how to implode a local university building could also help scientists better understand earthquakes. you want imploding, let's talk tech and financial results. a disaster.
