to get a handle on a wildfire threatening the outskirts of palm springs. and we're looking at a little heavier flow of traffic for a friday. especially for a friday. so the south bay has some slowing. we'll sort that out for you. and also a fire is burning near big sur. we'll give you the latest on that. and we have the all-important weekend forecast, one you won't want to miss if you're trying to head outdoors either saturday or sun. and right now, this is what the city by the bay looks like on this friday as it tries to wake up. plenty of cloud cover out there as christina loren will give us a full look at the forecast coming up. it is friday, july 19th. this is "today in the bay." good morning, and thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-can than and i'm --

the shooting happened just after 10:30 last night inside the bonfair market in alameda. the store is near the corner of high street and santa clara avenue. this is where "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live. and the search continues now for another suspect. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. i got an update from alameda police. they tell me that they're still checking with area hospitals to see if perhaps that second suspect came in looking for treatment for a gunshot wound. they think he may have been shot in a confrontation here as he was leaving the bonfair market. police are still taking pictures and gathering evidence in a robbery where the suspects' luck ran out. they started getting 911 calls of a robbery in progress after 10:30 last night here on high street in santa clara. what they're saying is that two armed men with masks on in dark clothes with guns came inside

the store, but talk about timing. an off-duty alameda county sheriff's deputy was inside, too. we're told he had about 20 years' experience. there was a confrontation. one of the suspects shot and killed, the other possibly shot, and all of this while two employees were inside. one in the stockroom, one cashier who saw it go down. they're unharmed. police say it isn't the first time the bonfair market was hit like this. >> the store was robbed eight days ago with a similar m.o., and again, it was an armed robbery at that time, too, the same time of the evening. >> reporter: now, alameda police tell us that overnight they did bring dogs out to search for that second suspect. they interviewed a number of witnesses. they couldn't find him, but again, still checking hospitals. they also say that they're going to bring out another crew, and they're going to be putting basically -- diagramming the

whole scene. so it could be several more hours, at least, until noon before high street opens here at santa clara. reporting live in alameda, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you, christie. 6:03. a teenager who survived the asiana plane crash only to be killed by a vehicle responding to the scene. that's what two sources are telling the "san francisco chronicle" this morning. they report she died of blunt force trauma sort of being hit by a vehicle. the 16-year-old was covered in firefighting foam when she was hit. it's unclear what type of vehicle hit the girl, but most of the rigs on the scene of the crash were san francisco fire trucks stationed at the airport. we've got a live look at the entrance of the san mateo county coroner's office right now. it's actually handling this investigation. the office just opened at 6:00. bob redell is at the office right now getting an update for us. he will bring us a live report coming up in less than ten

minutes. happening now, thousands of homes are under evacuation orders as the massive mountain fire continues to spread. about 4,000 houses, condos, cabins and several hotels in idyllwild and surrounding communities are threatened. the fire is forcing many people into palm springs where some hotels are offering discounts to those who don't have a place to stay. a palo alto family vacationing in palm springs says the fire is making them nervous. >> we were kind of anxious at first, because we don't really know the area so well. we didn't know whether it was going to come down or stay up that way. >> the fire has burned almost 23,000 acres and is still just 15% contained. authorities say the fire was human caused, but they're not saying whether it was accidental or intentional. >> and they're having such a tough go of it down there, but the heat doesn't help. >> yeah. let's start with the live radar where the fire is burning in

southern california. just to the west of palm springs, and look at what's happening, we have some showers coming through this morning, but embedded within some of the showers we have isolated thunderstorms. and the winds are now shifting. so it's pushing that fire back towards idyllwild, pushing it back towards hemet, and a 22,800-acre so far. very impressive for just five days. only 15% containment. this one still has extreme growth potential. we'll be watching it closely for you. they have 3,300 firefighters on scene trying to work that fire. you see the showers coming up from the south. this is going to head our way, bringing the thunderstorms into the bay area by the end of the weekend. still a ways away. we want to zoom in and show you the dry radar, just low cloud cover, and maybe drizzle. nothing significant just yet. that comes our way this sunday. we want to put that on your radar. 58 in san jose at lunchtime today.

getting too warm for outdoor activities in antioch, so get it done early if you can out there. elsewhere, it will be perfect around the bay. 78 degrees. a great day for lunch on the water. ooh, a beautiful day, oakland, for example, comfortable, 83 in san jose, 88 in gilroy. i'll show you the seven-day outlook. i'll show you when you can expect the thunderstorms. and another fire is burning to the south near big sur. we'll detail that for you. 6:06. and let's look at the drive. good morning, mike. >> looking over toward san jose where i talked some unusually early slowing, very quick-changing situation. over here towards the live shot. you see there is a good steady volume of cars northbound with the headlights past 680. the same area on the map, was showing speeds into the 50s. and now, a better flow of traffic and 880. back up at the speed limit over the last five -- so you can see the swing in the traffic flow as the burst hits again later on a friday. we're watching for another one come in 20 minutes from now. south 880 near stevens creek,

the earlier crash has cleared. we had the slowing north of 280 on 880, but it's left our screen as well. so overall, the south bay actually looking really nice now. but we do see tendencies for the slowdown for 880 as well as 280 coming through downtown. so we'll track that as well. i will show you some red zones here. this is over here on the altamonte pass, west 580 slow towards north livermore. there was earlier construction in the area, just past this. it might have stuck around late, because there have been no incidents. we do have 580, and it's traditional on a friday, and folks are getting out later in the morning. live look outside shows you, also, how things are shaping up. the bay bridge, cash lanes are backing up. the fast-track lane is a good advantage. we may see the lights judging by the volume. i'll leave that up to the management folks. back to you.

>> okay, mike, thanks. police in the east bay are trying to hunt down several squatters who were reportedly armed and living inside a $3 million walnut creek home. officers arrived last night to kick out the squatters. when they went inside, they found several guns, including an assault weapon. now, the home is reportedly owned by an investment group. one of the investors called police after he stopped by, to find the locks changed and those people living inside. the squatters offered up a fake lease and said they were paying rent. police arrested two people, and they're still looking for several more whose names appear on that fake lease. mountainview police are looking for a brazen burglar who broke into a man's hotel while he was taking a shower. they say the suspect got into the room at the hotel avante near highway 85 yesterday morning by pulling the screens off the window. police say the thief then slid the window opened and entered the room. he took off with a laptop, ipad, wallet, and the keys to a rental

a robbery suspect is dead after a confrontation with an off-duty sheriff's deputy in alameda. investigators say the deputy was inside a convenience store on high street when two armed men tried robbing the clerk after. after a brief struggle, the deputy shot and killed one of the suspects. the second is still on the run. about 400 homes and cabs under evacuation order this is morning as a wildfire continues to spread. the fire has burned nearly 23,000 acres and it's just 15% contained. the governor of michigan says detroit's bankruptcy filing

has been 60 years in the making. the city will have to sell off assets and scale back services but the city emergency center says bankruptcy is the first step toward restoring detroit. >>. >> 6:13 right now. we continue our coverage of the asiana airline crash at san francisco international airport. overnight, a new report claims one of the teenage victims survived the crash, only to be struck and killed by a vehicle responding to the scene. bob redell is there live. what's the late sneft. >> reporter: they told us we have to wait for the news conference at 10:00 a.m. but "the san francisco chronicle" says their sources say they do bebelieve ye mengyuan did survive the plane crash, she was alive outside the

airplane, but died of blunt force trauma when she was run over by one of the vehicles responding to the scene. not yet confirmed but we expect the confirmation during a news conference at 10:00. last week, san francisco police addressed the issue before the coroner made a determination of the cause of death. >> the fire truck did go over the victim, that's a fact. now, the cause of death, whether the victim was deceased before or as a result, that is what we're trying to figure out. >> reporter: what's not clear is how ye mengyuan got out of the aircraft, did she escape on her own, did someone help her out, or was she ejected during the crash like her friend who was killed? first responders eventually found her body near the left wing. it was covered in firefighting foam, raising another question, were first responders even able to see her when she was accidentally run over? was there too much foam covering her up? her family and the family members of the two other people

killed on flight 214 met yesterday with the san mateo county coroner reportedly to receive explanations of how their loved ones died. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you so much. we'll get other update in the next half hour. something has certainly gone awry in high tech. >> scott mcgrew, company after company, disappointing investors, badly missing expectations when it comes to money earned. >> reporter: yes, the summer of our discontent. even google has let wall street down. google made a ton of money. $3.75 billion in profit. the amount of money it takes from ad sales fell sharply. that's not the first time this has happened. over at microsoft, meanwhile, we continue to see huge disappointment over at surface tablet. the difference between what analysts thought microsoft's financials would be and what they really were called the miss was the biggest in a decade. even news that there are more jobs in california is kind of bad news. the unemployment rate for the state fell to 8.5%.

that pulls a key moving average below the threshold for some people to keep receiving unemployment checks. about 100,000 californians will no longer qualify for long-term employment -- unemployment, rather, because our job market is too strong to justify the payments. normally, we get the state unemployment numbers today, but someone over at the bureau of labor statistics posted the data to the internet early. no word if they, too, will be unemployed. the other thing to know, san francisco city and county continues to rally. some of the fastest job growth they've seen in years, while the south bay continues to lag a bit behind. a rare miss for that man there on the right. sebastian tlung, inventing udacity. this was taken last year. the university says so many kids failed those online classes, the school's going to suspend the project. the deal came after the state university system noticed many

incoming freshmen were so unprepared for college, they needed remedial classes. those got so full, they made the online deal. the fellow behind it, by the way, invented google street view and google driverless cars. here's an interesting convention. computer-controlled rifle scopes, you may have read about these, they let anyone with any no shooting experience hit a target at 1,000 yards. by the way, the ceo of texas-based company seen there using the rifle will be my guest sunday morning on "press here," former marine officer, silver star, bronze star, purple heart, in iraq. an interesting interview and debate over the future of weapons. >> he addresses the debate, as well? >> reporter: yeah, are these safe? are these not safe? should we have weapons like these? it will be an interesting debate. >> all right. we look forward to it. >> he has quite the resume. thank you so much. so does meteorologist christina loren. >> thank you. >> her meteorologist talents with us this morning.

>> yeah. giving me a run for my money at this point, especially when it comes to the wildfire danger that now the whole state of california is up against. 6:18 now as you probably well know, big fire burning in southern california. we are efforting a live report from our sister station knbc. hopefully, we'll be able to bring that to you and take you live. they're actually getting improvement from the weather out there. a little bit of shower activity coming down, still. that is one definitely threatening the state of california. we also have one in big sur i'll show you in a moment. 56 in livermore. 58 in san jose. good morning, you're at 54 degrees, san mateo. for today and your saturday, we'll see plenty of 90s inland. getting onshore flow at the coast. meaning 60s and 70s there. great beach conditions. and then we get this awkward pattern. weather moving east to west across the nation. the ridge is going to move all the way into the bay area from texas, and it's going to bring hot weather and instability,

some monsoonal moisture headed our way. we have a chance for thunderstorms starting on sunday. mostly for the sierra-nevada, the western-facing slopes around san jose and the north bay mountains. we'll keep on top of that for you. getting a dangerous situation when it comes to those dry lightning strikes. the potential won't be there just sunday but all the way through thursday. 93 degrees. not too hot. the dry heat for livermore. 77 in freemont and 78 in oakland. meanwhile, a nice day shaping up in wine country. 87 for santa rosa. 83 in san rafael. getting into the all-important weekend, here's your seven-day forecast. and it does tell the story. temperatures are going to stay nice and warm. we'll add the humidity as well. come on, clicker. come on now. you no it's friday. wake up! there we go. actually, we're going to get you a drive forecast first. hang on one moment, temperatures will be nice. catch the game here at at&t park. winds out of the west 10 to 15 mile the per hour. all of the action starts at 7:00

p.m. there we go. this guy is sleeping in this morning, mike. sierra thunder on sunday, probably putting in too much thunder, can't take it. 93 by monday. thunder creeping up from down under, moving in from the south. yeah, i'll leave it with you on that note. >> oh, yeah, isn't there a show called that? all right. looking over here toward the east bay, a smooth flow of traffic. it's building. the maps typically, orient north to the top. i'll flip it around. hold on. this is a drive we take for the commute. from highway 84, dakota road, you're averaging basically at the limit. in fact, some folks might want to consider the fact i see a lot of chp through there this time of day. light volume of traffic for 880 and 680 starting to build. we'll see the speeds dip a little bit. over here, a live look we took, from the cal trans camera, 880, and you see it's the southbound side, a really light volume of

traffic heading down through san jose. we'll get around the map and see how things are shaping up just south here, over the santa cruz mountains, earlier crash has moved to the shoulder. we don't see any slowing either direction while northbound is building a bit. that's not a concern if you're watching the show. you don't go north. you go south there. let's get you also a look -- we saw in the picture a little bit of a crash here. northbound 101. this is 880 where we took the drive. this is 680, and as you're approaching on 101 at story, reports of a crash on the shoulder. no slowing there. and overall, the entire south looks good. we don't have this, we saw earlier, it's calmed down as well. we'll give you a look over toward the drive times through the tri-valley. a slow drive for 84. much improvement over altamonte pass, so whatever was going on, the construction crew seems to have cleared and we have speeds back up into the 50s. going into the bay bridge toll plaza, we'll give you a look and you'll see traffic is backed up in all lanes. the metering lights are on. the flow of traffic from the

parking lot, so not a problem over the berkley curve. but it's building. we had earlier slowing, but things have calmed down, so once again you're at the limit. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 6:22. an australian company says it has developed wet suits that can help avoid shark attacks. some of the wet suits make divers obvious to sharks with big, white, and deep blue stripes. the company says another line of its suits helps you blend in with background colors in the water. so do they work? a professor at cal state long beach tells "the l.a. times" he chuckles at the wet suit idea, because scientists aren't really sure what causes sharks to bite people in the first place. of course, shark bites are a serious problem in australia. of course, here in the bay area, as well, you might recall a shark bit a kayaker's boat in pacifica june 25th. the kayaker escaped unharmed. >> i don't know. to try them out, kind of scary. not going to be the guinea pig on that one.

>>. >> new video just in of last month's deadly building collapse in philadelphia. look at this. a city bus was driving by just as the four-story building came crashing down on the salvation army thrift store.

this happened on june 5th. six people were killed, 13 others hurt. the building was in the process of being demolished when it collapsed. police say the man operating the heavy equipment during the demolition had marijuana and pain killers in his system. he faces a number of felony counts. in colorado, nine people are recovering this morning after being struck by lightning. the victims were working on a farm north of fort collins when a fast-moving storm rolled through the state yesterday. fire officials say everyone is expected to survive, but some of the most seriously hurt are suffering from confusion, weakness, and numbness throughout their bodies. an estimated 700 lightning strikes were recorded in just 20 minutes during that storm. the new york attorney general is investigating complaints that the red cross left superstorm sandy victims in a lurch. dozens of families say the american red cross promised them help to rebuild homes or pay for rent, but then, went back on

still out of control in southern california. a live report on this fire fight in moments. also, a live look from wall street this morning as we hear the opening bell. you made it to friday morning, july 19th. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. it's 6:30. i'm marla tell yes, sir. >> and i'm laura cannon. a wildfire is still raging in southern california. so far, 24,000 acres have burned. that's bigger than the cities of sunnyvale combined. firefighters say it's still growing. jacob rascon is live in riverside this morning. jacob, we understand about 3,300 firefighters are trying to work to get a handle on this fire? >> reporter: that's right, and new numbers just out. we have more than 38 square miles burning now in its fifth day. the threat today as real as

ever. let me show you a map really quick. this is where we are in lake hemet, and over here is idyllwild. this is an area where 6,000 people were evacuated a couple of days ago. and up north is the palm springs area. and nobody's been evacuated there, but the fire is only two miles away there. the smoke cloud is thick there. you can see it. and then, where we are, you can see the smoke cloud really well. and this is coming up just over idyllwild. take a look at some video from yesterday. again, as i said in our fifth day now, started on monday, on private land, the cause was human, but we don't know if it was accidental or if it was done on purpose. we know it started on private land, but it's gone on to tribal land, federal land. we have a unified command out here with riverside, san bernardino counties, and a dozen other local small city firefighters. as i said before, nearly 3,300. that's 400 new just added yesterday. so the threat today is real as

ever. yesterday, we spoke to someone from palo alto in palm springs vacationing. of course, got a surprise with that smoke cloud. >> anxious at first, because we don't know the area so well. we didn't know whether to come down or to stay up that way. >> reporter: and back here live, it's a shift change now. a lot of the firefighters just coming in. it's 3,300, but they're on and off. one more thing i wanted to show you is that, of course, as we talk about seven homes have been destroyed, 23 structures, but so many more have been saved. and right here just new this morning, a couple of notes for the local firefighters from the children, "thank you for saving us." the people here so appreciative. many thousands still evacuated, hanging out with relatives, friends, neighbors and at the local high schools. of course, the fire continues to grow. we'll bring you the latest updates as they become available. reporting live, jacob rascon, nbc 4 news. >> thank you, jacob.

many people thankful for the firefighters' hard work, working such long hours. >> but closer to home, in big sur, there's another wildfire burning down there. christina, i know you have information on that. >> the guys have been working all night. 169 acres so far. the tassajara fire. they have terrain and access issues. usually you don't see more personnel than the actual acreage burned, but that is the case. they're going to try to get this one knocked down over the weekend. but i made a call to cal fire yesterday, and this is why we're not sending resources down to southern california. they're working this fire. you can see just how high it is. higher terrain making it very difficult. they have to fight it by air and on foot. they cannot get the trucks up into this remote area. air quality issue is just about all we're dealing with now. you might want to rethink the camping plans if you were thinking big sur. maybe head up to tahoe instead. the temperatures now in the 50s. comfortable to start out the friday.

49 in gilroy. 56 in livermore. at 57 up in napa. let's talk about fog. it will be a factor until 8:00 a.m., after which time we'll see a great deal of clearing. by 11:00 a.m., when we meet back here for the 11:00 broadcast, we'll have another update on the fire for you. stick around until then. and at that point, the fog will be mostly clear as well. hour by hour forecast looks like this for today. 93 degrees inland. 79 bayside at the coast. 66 degrees. the seven-day, weekend forecast coming up next. first, let's check the drive. friday light, mike? >> overall, yes. the bay bridge, it doesn't look light. this is a backup. the metering lights are on. across the span, an easy drive. you can see the lanes are moving. also on the approach, the berkley curve is fine, just around west grand avenue where you have the brakes hitting, off of the maze. over here, the tri-valley, seeing slowing from time to time, speeds in the upper 50s between isabel and the dublin interchange. but really, this is very light. especially even for a friday through the area. look at highway 84, no big

problem. traditional for a friday, eastbound 84 up toward 580 where we see the slowing that's kicked in. that's a different pattern. it looks like a lot more folks heading toward the central. over here, 238 slowing off the castro valley y, 880 and 92, so you can see where the traffic is going over the east bay. we'll look at that bridge itself in a live look, showing you the low clouds are hovering around but not a problem as far as visibility on the span. in fact, we can see the high-rise, but we can't see the peninsula. the low clouds will shift and move around, but the visibility for drivers is okay. there. the golden gate bridge, not so much. look at this. the north side, we have the fog that's crept in. that will be the case. as we know, that burns off for a nice view for about 10 minutes of the day. if you are a tourist, just hold out the hope, and coming from the san francisco side, keep walking across to the north tower. that's where you'll get a better view later on. >> get some clam chowder, right? >> that's right. 6:35. a man wanted in connection with

a machete attack in arizona has been arrested in the bay area. u.s. marshals say luis sanchez was arrested wednesday night in san jose after a standoff with s.w.a.t. officers. he is wanted on suspicion of attempted murder in flagstaff, arizona, for attacking a person with a machete last december. he's being held this morning in the santa clara county jail. we have a follow-up to the richmond gang rape trial. both defendants have been found guilty on all counts. marcelles peter and jose montano face life in prison for the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl outside the richmond homecoming dance. four men have been convicted in the case two. more are awaiting trial. the san francisco crime lab technician who pleaded guilty to cocaine possession is expected to be sentenced today. deborah madden took a plea deal that reduced her charges to misdemeanors carrying a prison sentence up to one year. she went to trial twice on more serious felony charges of

stealing cocaine that was being tested as evidence. but those trials ended in hung juries. the charges against madden led to the dismissal of hundreds of criminal cases on claims the evidence was now tainted. it is 6:37. still ahead, we'll talk about the delay keeping george zimmerman from getting his gun back. we'll tell you why the evidence in trayvon martin's murder trial is still locked up. and the real face of terror. we'll tell you why an officer's decision to release these photos may have cost him his job on the force.

at 6:40, tomorrow marks one year since the colorado theater shootings and today a group will gather at a denver park to mark the names of the gun violence victims. at the same time, at the same park, gun rights advocates are planning a counterrally. one lawmaker says the counterprotest is a slap in the face to those who lost a loved one. the shootings left 12 people dead. george zimmerman will have to wait to get back the gun that killed unarmed teenager trayvon martin. the department of justice has placed a hold on evidence while it investigates possible civil rights violations in that case. the evidence also includes the hoodie martin wore the night he died as well as the bag of skittles he carried when he was shot and killed during that confrontation with zimmerman. a boston police photographer may be out of a job after releasing these photos showing

boston bombing suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev surrendering to police. you can see a sniper rifle scope was targeted at his forehead during the surrender, and then in this picture, tsarnaev is holding his shirt up, likely to show police he was not hiding a weapon. the police photographer says he released the photo in response to this controversial "rolling stone" cover which he calls an insult and hurtful to survivors of the april 15th bombings. the police department will hold a news conference about the photos release. coming up, teenager survives the plane crash at sfo, only to die after being hit and struck by a truck at the scene. the new overnight report hours ahead of the official announcement from the coroner. and breaking news overnight. an off-duty officer uses deadly force to stop an armed robbery at his neighborhood store. we are live with new details next. and california was the

that's where "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live. christie, that search continues right now for another suspect? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. and i tell you, this investigation is going to take some time. in fact, the coroner hasn't even been called out here yet. what they did do is call out a second team to map out this whole shooting. they tell us that they have recovered one gun, and they are still looking for that second suspect. they're checking out hospitals in the area, thinking he may have gone there seeking treatment, because he may have been shot, too, in this confrontation overnight. but talk about timing. two armed men stormed into this bonfair market on high street and santa clara and it turns out an off-duty santa clara county sheriff's deputy was inside. alameda police tell us this started when they got several 911 calls around 10:33 last night about an armed robbery in progress. this is on the city's east end. two employees of the store were inside at the time along with that alameda county sheriff's

deputy who was off duty, a 20-year veteran. >> he was inside the store shopping when the robbery began to take place. and then some type of confrontation took place where he ended up shooting and killing one of the suspects, and fortunately, neither of the employees that were working in the store was injured, and the sheriff's deputy was not injured either. >> reporter: now, alameda police used search dogs overnight looking for that second suspect, but no luck. i can tell you they spent the morning interviewing witnesses. this isn't the first time this market was robbed. it was hit eight days ago in a similar way, two guys with dark clothes and masks on stormed in. so police certainly looking for a connection there. back here live, they tell us if you are coming through the area, again, this is high street and santa clara, that they will have this intersection shut down until at least 12:00 today. reporting live in alameda,

christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks, christie. time now to look at the weather as we take you outside to the south bay. there is san jose in all its glory. you can see the haze, cloud cover right there, christina loren. >> yeah. >> a cooler start, but warming up? >> warming up. not too bad. san jose, we kind of get the best weather. i'm going to say it right now. 85 degrees not too bad. we're kind of right smack in the middle of san francisco and livermore. livermore 93 degrees. you can't beat that by july standards, especially when you consider most of the nation under the oppressive heat wave. let's get to the flight delays, because we don't have any. this is the first time in three days we've started out without any flight delays. here's what i want to draw your attention to. all flights are on time across the rest of the nation. but looking at some of the temperatures. new york city right now, 90 degrees. 79 in atlanta. meanwhile, here on the west coast, we're getting the best of the best. it will get warmer and we're going to add that humidity. they'll be talking a lot about

that this morning on the "today" show, as well as the fire burning in southern california. we also have one burning, a much smaller fire, near big sur. what i can tell you the resources across the state are running thin. high temperatures, they'll be creeping up and also we'll add the dry lightning strikes to the forecast next week. it will get quite a bit more dangerous when it comes to the overall situation. we need to be on the best of the fire safety. if you see anything break out on the side of the road, please pull over safely and report it to 911 asap so they can get it knocked down. we have the weird pattern. high pressure from the east moving to the west. that will drive up the monsoonal moisture. we'll be dealing with the chance for thunderstorms all the way through next week. and the best chance is going to be the western-facing slopes surrounding san jose, north bay mountains, and, of course, the spine of the sierra-nevada. today, though, the dry heat. 92 for concord. 88 napa. 81 in los garros. giants are back at it after a nice all-star break. boy oh, boy, taking on the

diamondbacks. it will be nice out there. 60 degrees. wind out of the west 10 to 15 miles per hour. if you don't have tickets, don't worry about it. you can catch the game right here on nbc bay area starting at 7:00 p.m. and we do it big here on nbc bay area when we get the chance to carry those games. 93 degrees by monday. temperatures staying steady, but the humidity increases and the best chance for thunderstorms wednesday, into early thursday. let's check the drive with mike. >> looking over here toward a lighter friday commute. as you might expect, the south bay shows a smooth flow. 101 just starting to show the slowdown, again a tad bit in the upper 50s at the worst, north of 680. getting more company past the airport, as well. we're looking at 87 and 280 through downtown san jose, slowing up from time to time, but not a big concern. looking over here, though, southbound at 880 coming down through freemont. a lot of slowing now. once you get past dakota, the dunn barton bridge, speeds in the 50s consistently over the last 10, 15 minutes. so it is an issue. toward mission boulevard, you

get a lighter flow of traffic. mission itself has shown some slowing. so it is on right there, the connector between 880 and 680. also the connector between castro valley and the rest of 880 shows a smoother drive. we have a slowdown, and dramatic toward the san mateo bridge toll plaza. don't forget about that. i will show that to you in a second. the travel times -- or the speeds towards the maze. the metering lights are on but the traffic at the toll plaza light. you're at the limit for the east shore freeway, highway 24, as well as 580 coming through oakland. so that's a good flow of traffic there. we'll give you that live look now outside and show you that as you're coming off of the southside, the nice flow of traffic. we're seeing bursts from time to time. that's what's going on, the slower traffic for a short period of time changes to an average toward the toll plaza. but it's smooth here. no problems arounds peninsula. back to you. >> all right. thank you. we continue our coverage of

the asiana airline crash at san francisco international airport. overnight, a new report claims one of the teenaged victims actually survived the crash, only to be struck and killed by a vehicle responding to the scene. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from the san mateo county coroner's office which opened less than an hour ago. bob, are they saying anything yet? >> reporter: not yet. they told us we'd have to wait, marla, until a news conference scheduled for 10:00 this morning. but the san francisco chronicle is reporting through its own sources that the coroner here in san mateo does believe that 16-year-old ye mengyuan did initially survive the crash of asiana flight 214, that she was alive outside the plane. but that she died from blunt force trauma when she was run over by at least one of the vehicles responding to the scene. this is not yet confirmed by the coroner's office. as i mentioned. but we expect that confirmation during a news conference a few hours from now at 10:00. last week, however, san francisco police addressed this

issue before the coroner made a determination of the cause of death. >> the fire truck did go over the victim, that's a fact. now, the cause of death, whether the victim was deceased before or as a result, that is what we're trying to figure out. >> reporter: what is still not clear is how ye mengyuan did get out of the aircraft. did she escape on her own? did someone help her out? was she ejected during the crash like her friend, who was killed? first responders eventually found ye mengyuan near the left wing covered in firefighting foam, raising the issue of whether or not first responders were even aware she was there when she was accidentally run over. it's quite possible they didn't see her because there was too much foam. her family and the families of the other two people killed reportedly met yesterday with the san mateo county coroner to receive explanations of how their loved ones died. again, a news conference scheduled here on the peninsula, the san mateo county coroner's office at 10:00 this morning. reporting live in san mateo

county, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. 6:52. a teenager is recovering after being se ining seriously hurt w riding his skateboard. he crashed while riding downhill on gray fox circle after 8:30 last night. police say it appears the boy lost control, ran off the roadway, and hit a lightpole. the skateboarder was rushed to the hospital with serious head injuries. police say it's unclear if he was wearing a helmet or if any cars were involved. campus police at san jose state say three women are on the run this morning suspected of robbing a man at gunpoint last night. police say it happened on the north side of campus near clark hall. the three women approached the man, at least one of them had a gun. they took the man's laptop. campus police sent out one of the text message alerts to students letting them know what had happened. we talked to one woman who said she'll be a student this fall and she's thinking twice now about taking night classes.

>> i'll be more apprehensive about it. i might even have to forego those evening classes, because it does send some fear and some concern. >> police say the man who was robbed is not a student. they also say two of the female suspects were wearing red, the third was dressed in black. 6:54. former santa clara county supervisor george shirakawa will return to a courtroom today charged with impersonating a political rival. shirakawa is accused fd sending out campaign mailers in the name of magdalena carrasco, accompanying the north vietnam flag. he's already facing prison time after pleading guilty to set the charges of perjury and misuse of public funds. prosecutors have tried to increase his sentence to account for the new charges. the ambulance company that provides emergency services in the south bay has run into some financial trouble. the mercury news reports rural metro missed a bond payment

deadline this week. santa clara officials say they're concerned about whether the company will be able to continue its services. rural metro has paid millions in fines to the county for arriving late and also failing to keep enough ambulances ready on stand-by to be deployed. in a statement, the company says it plans to make up the missed bond payment within the next 30 days. a plan to build more housing in the bay area has the green light, but not everyone is happy about it this morning. the metropolitan transportation commission says another 2 million people will move to the bay area by 2040. hoping to avoid gridlock and housing shortage, bay area leaders approved a plan overnight that requires nine counties to add more than 180,000 housing units where people of all income levels. planned bay area also calls for the housing to be located close to public transportation to reduce greenhouse gas. the mtc has $350 million available to pay for infrastructure needed for that

we also have a check of the day's local top stories, as well. oakland police continuing their search today for the gunman who killed an 8-year-old girl, injuring three others wednesday night. police say the girl was having a sleepover with a friend when someone knocked on the door, and then opened fire. a robbery suspect is dead after a confrontation with an off-duty sheriff's deputy in alameda. investigators say the deputy was inside a convenience store on high street when two armed men tried robbing the clerk. after a brief struggle, the deputy shot and killed one of the suspects. the second is still on the run. we will learn today what killed one of the victims of the asiana flight airlines crash at sfo. sources from the coroner's office tell "the chronicle" ye mengyuan survived the plane crash but died of blunt force trauma after being hit by a vehicle responding to the scene. we'll have more, of course, on the bay area today at 11:00. that's what's happening "today in the bay." we're back at 7:25.
