moving in two directions. on one end here in palm springs the other closing in on the town of idle wild, this as firefighters dig in. overnight the community flanked by hundreds of firefighters protecting more than 200 homes. the blitz to carve a massive fire break kicked into high gear on thursday. the out-of-control and fast-moving mountain fire closed within two miles of town, an inferno that for now can't be stopped. >> we're concerned about everybody's home and property and safety. we cannot guarantee your safety should the fire run into town. >> reporter: mandatory evacuations forced more than 6,000 to flee the flames. this mountain community a tender box ready to explode. this man among the last hold outs to leave.

>> this is my life. this is my friends. everybody i care for, they all live up here. so it just becomes -- you become part of the community. >> reporter: despite 17 water dropping helicopters and a dc-10 providing air support the blaze scorched tens of thousands of acres of land. the mushroom cloud of billowing smoke seen from space. ash is raining down on the city of palm springs. today the fire fight enters day five with only a handful of homes lost so far, this will be another critical day on the fire lines and for the small town of idle wild. today the fire is roughly two miles away from idle wild and two miles away from here in palm springs. the good news, the blaze is roughly 15% contained. progress on the frontlines. matt? thank you. al is outside with more on the conditions they're facing out west.

let's face it, also this heat wave here in the east, al? >> absolutely. good news for them, the winds will be light but here in the east it's been rough. yesterday jfk setting a record, jfk airport, 100 degrees. 100 along the jersey shore. 90s, and, of course, the feels like temperatures even worst. here's what we've got going for today. we have excessive heat warnings from washington d.c. all the way up to boston out to detroit, cincinnati. we've got heat advisory as far west as iowa. here's what we're looking at as far as temperatures today. we are going to see a high in new york city of 99. it will feel like 110. look at boston. 100 degrees. it will feel like 106. 108 in d.c. and as we head out west, those feel-like temperatures will be, again, in the hundreds. here's the good news, we will see a break coming. that high pressure is going to start to break down.

the cooler air from canada will push down to the south starting in the great lakes and by the week's end make its way into the northeast. however, with that cooler air, drier air pushing into warmer moister air a risk of strong storms and isolated tornadoes from chicago, cleveland and on up into maine and for tomorrow it moves into the northeast from cincinnati, columbus and cleveland, rochester, new york city, albany. good news is that will push through. temperatures will drop, humidity levels will drop and everybody will finally get a break from this biggest heat wave in the last 12 years. savannah. >> holding on for sunday. thank you very much. meantime, a lot of uncertainty in detroit this morning one day after it became the biggest u.s. city ever to file for bankruptcy. gabe gutierrez is there with the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. behind me is gm headquarters. the auto giant emerged from it's own bankruptcy not long ago. now a major blow to it's home

turf. many people saw this coming but it still hurts. >> reporter: today the mayor of detroit is trying to reassure the motor city after the largest municipal bankruptcy filing in u.s. history. a bold admission that an iconic city can no longer pay it's debts estimated at $18 billion. >> this was a difficult and painful decision, but if you look at it, there's no other viable option. >> reporter: detroit, the home of the american auto industry had been in financial decline for decades. the population plummeted from about 2 million in the 1950s to just 700,000 today. >> what's eating up the city's budget are all the promises to retirees policemen, firemen, city workers, many of whom are retired now but still entitled to collect money. >> reporter: now it's up to a federal bankruptcy judge to decide what will happen to all

the debt. >> i think the people in detroit are afraid. they don't -- we don't know what's going to happen. >> reporter: cynthia is a retired police lieutenant. she worries she will lose her pension as she faces mounting medical bills. >> my husband and i have no source of income coming in because we're both retired police from the city of detroit. we would lose everything. >> reporter: for now, officials say no city services will be impacted. this chapter 9 bankruptcy case could drag on for years and will no doubt be widely watched by many municipalities across the country dealing with their own pension problems, matt. all right. gabe gutierrez for us this morning. thank you. new developments tied to the backlash over rolling stone's cover of the boston bombing suspect. in response to that cover, a police photographer released never-before-seen images from

the night of his capture. kristen has details on that. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we are i right near where the bombing happened, and i think the officer's actions show you how high emotions are running over all of this. those behind the scenes photos were released by the photographer who took them for the state police. he says because of his outrage over the way tsarnaev was portrayed on that "rolling stone" cover. >> they are the imagines of his last stand. the accused bomber surrendering after a day-long manhunt. injured, bloody and a scope squarely on his head. the pictures were taken by massachusetts state police sergeant sean murphy. part of that massive dragnet working to flush out tsarnaev in a backyard boat after the brutal bombing and shoot-out that left

his brother and alleged accomplice dead. murphy gave them the photos and a statement that red in part, i believe that the imagine that was portrayed by "rolling stone" magazine was an insult to any person who has ever worn a uniform of any color. i hope that the people that see these imagines will know that this was real. it was as real as it gets. what "rolling stone" did was wrong. this guy is evil. this is the real boston bomber. not someone fluffed and buffed for the cover of "rolling stone" magazine. tsarnaev's imagine on the cover of "rolling stone" outraged many who say it glorifies an accused mass murderer. >> makes him more of a celebrity than he deserves to be. i'm not happy with it. >> wouldn't buy it, want to look at it. >> give me a break. why don't they show him in his prison jump suit with his hands behind his head? that would be a better picture to put on "rolling stone." >> reporter: while murphy may

have been trying to accomplish something like that we could not reach him for comment but in a statement state police say they didn't authorize the release of the photos. according to boston magazine murphy has been suspended and faces a disciplinary hearing next week. >> reporter: boston magazine says murphy's computer has been confiscated but the magazine says it has many more images he plans to release in the september issue. rolling stones had no comment on murphy's actions. all right. kristen. thanks a lot. tamron is here with new fall out from the zimmerman verdict. >> don't look for any quick change in florida's stand your ground law. governor rick scott met with protesters upset over the not guilty verdict, and he urged them to call lawmakers into a special session to repeal stand your ground saying they want to make sure every child in florida can feel safe again. the governor told them he wants to keep the law in place.

officials are set to reveal what caused the death of flight 214. the teen girl was alived when she was run over by a rescue vehicle, and the coroner is expected to announce that today. and then nine people in colorado are recovering this morning after he were injured in a lightning strike. they were working in a field on a farm in wellington, colorado when the storm hit. nearly 700 strikes were recorded in a 20 minute period during that storm. now to wall street and what's moving the markets. kayla joins us. >> stocks are falling this morning after tech giants microsoft and google having a tough week. the stock fell as they reported lackluster sales from april to june. microsoft selling fewer tablets and google selling fewer phones.

art heists. bits of the paintings have now been found in a woman's oven. keir simmons in london this morning with those details. keir, good morning to you. >> imagine your a mom that thinking your son may have stolen famous art work. then you hear the police are coming. do you destroy the masterpieces loved by millions around the world or do you hand the son you love over to justice. that's what this woman appears to have faced and she appears to have decided to burn the art. >> reporter: it was a devastating crime, works by picasso, monet, stolen. from the seven art works taken last year this maybe all that's left. fragments of paint and nails that held the paintings in place. scientists studied and tated these small pieces of evidence and fear it is the stolen art. what's thought to be the remains of the paintings were found here in an abandoned house.

the work of a mom trying to save her son. the mother of a suspect in the theft told police she put the paintings in the stove and burnt them. he is one of six who will stand trial next month for the break in at the museum. >> it strikes me as a desperate and terrible attempt of a mother to try and protect her son. it's a great shame that we won't see these paintings. and a huge loss. >> security moments captured the moment the gang got in. at the time, police were asking how they got away. >> people responsible for this found a way in and a way out and they found the time to take seven paintings. >> reporter: now the art world is questioning itself how paintings so important could be taken so easily and possibly destroyed. works worth hundreds of millions of dollars but irreplaceable. the director of the museum is saying if they have gone up in flames it will be a crime against humanity but there maybe mothers around the country asking themselves what would

>> my liquor store was never for sale. he told police that whitey came to his house and in front of rake's infant daughter gave him a choice his store or his life. >> that night haunts me every day. >> after waking decades to face him in court he was told he wouldn't be called by prosecutors on tuesday and wednesday according to police he was found dead in suburban lincoln massachusetts. >> he was on the side of my road. i said he either had a heart attack or something or the heat got him. an autopsy found no visible signs of trauma. toxicology tests have begun. >> boston talk radio hosts talked to him days ago and said he wanted to have his say against bulger. >> he wanted to rub his nose in

it and teach him a lesson. it's unfortunate he never got a chance to do that. it would have fulfilled his dream. >> reporter: meanwhile, thursday a dramatic face-off. bulger and stephen the rifleman flemmi saw each other for the first time in 18 years. flemmi said bulger was a fellow informant for the fbi. flemmi is perhaps the most important witness in the case which features 19 murder charges against bulger. >> he ties whitey into the two things he doesn't want to be connected to. being an fbi informant, ie, a rat, and number two being a guy that kills women. flemmi testified about 15 minutes before court lead out today with more to come today. but as he left the stand he swore at bulger and a relative of one of his alleged victims said it was proof this divorce is final. thank you very much. mike is an msnbc contributor and

long time commentator on all kinds of boston events. good morning to you. >> good morning matt. >> i was going to say this is the stuff of movies. but they made that movie. it was called the departed. it was based on whitey bulger. what do you make of this trial so far? >> the trial is incredible. it is actually -- you referenced a movie, it's the culmination of a movie people have been waiting to see for about three decades. parts of this story have been in and out of the news for over 30 years. bulger, his brother bill bulger, the president of the massachusetts senate played a part in the context of the story. the color of the story. and now we have the trial. it is so depraved, the testimony. it is shocking although the reality of it is that a lot of people knew about things that had occurred over the past 30 years. >> what about this new development, the death of this guy stephen rakes.

he was going to testify. he was informed then he wouldn't testify and now he turns up dead. one of our local newspaper screams the headline dead men don't talk. we don't know if this was foul play. is it possible that after all these years whitey bulger can still silence people? >> that i don't think is possible. i don't think he has anybody left who is willing to help him? something like this. stev steve was found about 20 miles from where he lives. that was a long walk. no car. no i.d. on his body. the toxicology reports won't come back for another two to three weeks so we don't know the cause of death but clearly several people told me that he was clearly dumped there. the body was dumped there. he died somewhere else. >> why is it so important, we've heard it several times during the trial, mike, why is this issue of whether whitey bulger was an fbi informant something

that seems to have so much impact and infuriates him so much? >> well, he's in denial. he's a sociopath and i would not be surprised if he took the stand in his own defense to give his own version of events as twisted and as horrible as they are. but why, still after all these years are we waiting for the conclusion of this trial? because many people in law enforcement during the 80s and early 90s knew, just knew that whitey bulger was cooperating and an informant for the fbi. there were too many occasions when dea agents and boston police and the state police should show up getting ready to do a drug bust and information they had about when it would occur had been leaked to bulger and his crew. nothing moved in south boston, drugs or anything like that without whitey bulger's consent. >> it's a fascinating trial. good to see you. thanks very much.

i cook like this. >> she does. >> i think i was a flamingo in a former life. this is more comfortable to me than standing on two feet. next a warrior 3. as you can see how hard it would be on the beach. if you just tipped it over and worked all those little muscles in the upper leg and really feel some core work going on. >> and again, you should hold that pose. >> a few deep breaths. you don't want to go in it and then quit. give it to time to work those muscles. >> you are doing great. >> so next we'll do is easier on the beach because what you can do is you can build up a little sand pile. i'm going to have you sit here in easy cross leg. the block simulating a little sand pile. if you have tight hips or hamstrings it pulls on the pelvis. changes your whole shape and really gives you a lot of pull on your low back. in order to sit up nice and tall, your hips higher than your heels you build a little sand mound.
