london. the royal baby is on the way, but he or she is not here yet. kate has been in the hospital for about nine hours. stay with nbc bay area for the latest. have a great day. good morning. she's in labor. the duchess of cambridge heads to the hospital overnight, and the eyes of the world fixed on that door where we will get the first word of the arrival of the new prince or princess. we have got it all covered for you live today, monday, july 22nd, 2013. >> from nbc news, this is a special edition of "today," the birth of the royal baby, with matt lauer, and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. welcome to "today." it's 7:00 a.m. on the west coast. >> i am david gregory along with
7:01 am
al roker, and matt as the night off. nine hours after she went to the hospital, i am just as excited as anybody. >> we really are. >> you are. it's almost weird. >> it seems like we might be in for a long day of labor. >> she might be in for a long day of labor. we are just watching. >> natalie has been out there, and it's 59 degrees out there, and she has a reflector under her and is being broiled. >> the duchess was admitted ten hours ago after arriving by car, and a palace spokesperson says things are progressing as normal. >> which means taking a long time. >> we also heard from grandad, prince william. >> he raised his hands.
7:02 am
>> first, his first grandchild. >> the first gift for the royal baby. did you see that happen there? >> yeah. >> we have our eyes on the hospital to the palace to kate's hometown. and natalie is outside st. mary's hospital. good morning to you. what is the latest? >> reporter: good morning, savannah. still no official baby birth announcement just yet, but hot off the presses, which is what we woke up to this morning, such great news that kate and william here at the hospital, and finally where the baby was on its way today. labor perhaps a little more than nine hours since she was admitted at the hospital. they came in to the a private wing, from the back, and as you can imagine, we are just awaiting word, awaiting that birth announcement and hopefully
7:03 am
that wait will not be much longer. early this morning with william at her side, kate ended to the hospital from the palace, a six-minute drive away. william will attend the birth, and others are expected to be at the hospital, too. assigned medical bulletin will be carried from the hospital through the streets of london to buckingham palace to announce a child has been born, and a two-mile ride that will be broadcast across the world, and the declaration will be deplayed on the easel, and then we will given information gender and weight and sometimes eye color.
7:04 am
and then a solute, and 62 blasts will mark the arrival of a phao generation. finally the duke and duchess of cambridge will emerge on these very steps with their new baby, just as charles and diana did 31 years ago. >> we hope to see a royal aide carrying a birth announcement. the bulletin will be delivered by him in a car all the way over to buckingham palace, about a two-mile drive, ten minutes or so and there will be press coverage, and sort of like a slow car chase all the way to the palace, and then the birth announcement will be placed on a gold easel, and then we will get the details, and including what
7:05 am
everybody wants to know, is it a prince or princess. >> i guess in the past it has taken a while for the royals to name their babies. >> reporter: it has, because it's a huge decision, as you can imagine, naming the future heir, the third in line to the thrown, with prince charles, apparently it took his mother a month to name him, and with prince william, diana and charles, it took them about a week. we are hoping we will know right away, but for now we will be standing by waiting some more. >> natalie, thank you so much. she is at her post, and one day soon we will see her again, we can only hope. >> al said, you originally said how long for labor? >> i thought it would be by around 11:00 east coast time. >> that was in your professional opinion -- >> that was your forecast. >> yeah, and she has been in labor about nine hours and the hospital released a statement saying she is, quote, being
7:06 am
cared for by an expert team of consultants and mid wives, and good to know, and our chief medical editor, nancy snyderman is there. >> good morning to you. yeah, we are all waiting for that door, and every other door in the hospital is being used. >> we talked about this being her first baby, and not unexpected that labor would go on for a little while. take us through the early part of the process. >> reporter: as you well know, the contractions start slowly, and it would not be uncommon for kate to have waited overnight for the contractions to have become significant before coming to the hospital.
7:07 am
you can see the nine hours we have all been waiting here and added another six to seven hours on top of that. because this is the first pregnancy, it will be longer than any subsequent pregnancies, and so she will check in and they will take her vital signs, and then she will be monitored as well as the baby, and the strength and the frequency of the contractions, and they will check oxygen saturation, and that's very important for the baby, because as the contractions get stronger, if there is any concern this baby is in distress and the oxygen levels drop, sometimes you could see a c-section, and as long as things are going slowly but assuredly in one direction, there are such important reasons for this to be a regular delivery.
7:08 am
>> and special precautions are taken, vip. >> reporter: you wanted to be treated like everybody else and that's to allow the labor to progress normally, and if there are no concerns about the safety of the mom or baby, the lungs are squished, and a baby has easier times breathing when he or she takes that first cry, and we know there is a colony of things that help the baby, and you don't get that in a c section. the push will be, one, to treat her normally, and two to hope for a vaginal delivery. >> thank you so much.
7:09 am
as natalie pointed out, the bulletin announcing the birth will be driven from st. mary's hospital to buckingham. what is the scene like there? >> reporter: good morning. a lot of people have gathered outside the gates of buckingham palace, here, and many have been sightseeing and some are saying they want to wait for the notice to be posted and they may have to wait sometime. we want you to know where along the gate it will be posted. the queen is not here, by the way. she is at windsor castle, and she only comes here for some occasions. she wanted the baby to be born before she went on vacation. her word is the command. the baby, not born yet, knows already who the boss is.
7:10 am
>> kate's mom was supposed to be in the delivery room and her sister as well? >> reporter: that's right. we don't know. we think some of the family are at the family home, but we don't know what their movements are exactly, and what we do know, of course, the first phone call from outside of that hospital, the first news to emerge from outside that private wing will be a phone call from william to the queen, and then the announcement will be made. >> when you say william is going to be making the phone call, that's a modernization of the normal procedure, right, william wanting to make that call personally, and he is obviously very close to his grandmother? >> reporter: absolutely, and william driving with kate to the hospital this morning, too, how much this couple wants, despite all of this, to try and be a normal couple, to do the things that ordinarily families would. you get this picture this morning of kate, pregnant, go into labor, and william going
7:11 am
with her to the hospital, just as so many families do at this time. >> well, it's very exciting. thank you so much. he is there at buckingham palace where eventually that easel will be placed there. >> i like that old-fashioned touch? >> yeah, and they will tweet it. >> i think they need flowers or something on the easel. it looks so bare. it's a queen or king. >> yeah, and they announced they will have a golden eagle flying -- >> yeah, and it will have flowers on it, and will be very exciting. >> 2013, bring it. >> and it's your first baby, so much to worry about, and then the whole eyes of the world upon you. >> yeah. >> i think she was prepared for it, being his wife, and she will be prepared of being the mother of a future king or queen. >> we will have a report from
7:12 am
another scene, and that's bucklebury, england. we want to switch gears, and we have other breaking news. breaking news for the pope. >> pope francis begins his first trip abroad as pontiff this morning. his destination, rio de janeiro. claudia is there with a preview of the visit. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we expect the pope to arrive in rio in about five hours, and the schedule for the day has already been changed and we are being told because of security problems and issues. now israelly he will be welcomed by the president of brazil, and then he was meant to drive to the governor's palace to attend his welcomed ceremony, and that has now changed because he will now -- we have been told that he will drive downtown where he will swap the car, and he will
7:13 am
jump on the pope mobile without the bullet proof glass, and he will drive around and welcome the pilgrims and brazilians and he will go to a smaller airport and he will catch a helicopter that will take him to the governor's palace to attend the welcome ceremony. why? we are being told that the security sources, there is already a protest being organized outside the palace, and it's not against the pope or the trip, but it's against corruption, but they know the media attention is on the pope here and they want to get their message across. >> thank you very much. china's state media reporting this morning at least 75 people were killed, nearly 300 others injured after a earthquake in western china. thousands of homes collapsed in the 6.6 magnitude quake. and then a 5-year-old girl trapped in the window drill of a 24-story apartment was rescued
