new prince. we're waiting on word of the name. we'll bring you live updates during the "today" show on nbc bay area at noon. >> that's what's happening "today in the bay." good morning. celebrating the prince of gun salutes across london this morning, heralding the royal arrival as we wait for a first look at the future king. we're there to bring it all to you live. moment of impact. the landing gear of a passenger jet collapses, sending it in flames down a runway in new york. at least ten people injured. this morning, the chaos in the cabin and the investigation now under way. and wrong turn. the pope's car mobbed by massive crowds in the streets of brazil. a breach of security that some are calling unprecedented today,

tuesday, july 23rd, 2013. good morning to everyone. welcome to "today." 7:00 a.m. on the west coast on a tuesd tuesday. i'm savannah guthrie. >> and i'm matt lauer with al roker and tamron hall. >> and we're at st. mary's hospital, waiting for the world's first glimpse of the youngest member of the royal family. >> do you get the feeling some people are ready for us to show that door, the door already. it's just kind of dragging on, the most famous, never-seen baby in the world. the baby prince entered the world on monday afternoon, happened about 4:24 london time, weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces. celebrations immediately followed. and as you can see by those gun salutes, it has not let up this morning. let's get right to natalie
7:02 am
morales at st. mary's hospital. hopefully, she's out of the line of fire. natalie, good morning to you. >> i certainly am out of the line of fire, matt. i've got to tell you, a lot of excitement, as you can imagine, with the arrival of this new baby here, but also a lot of excitement about the visitors who are soon to be arriving here. we just got word from kensington palace and buckingham palace spokespeople that the middletons are on their way. they're expected to be arriving here imminently, so the press all excited that, once again, we have something new to report here this morning. but of course, the moment everyone is waiting for is the moment when william and kate walk out of those now very famous doors, when they present their child to this world. at that moment, it is expected they will likely make some kind of statement to the media and to the world about their new little baby boy. and as, meanwhile, the world continues to celebrate all over the world.

7:03 am
a 41 gun salute at green park and another 21-gun salute at the tower of london. london is alive with the news, it's a boy. landmarks lit up and newspapers couldn't get enough of the new print. even the royal navy will a special message. baby fever spread around the world from the blue-lit waters of niagara falls to even the president and mrs. obama, who sent along their congratulations, saying "we wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings." the little prince already sparking more than 2 million tweets since kate into labor. prince william's response? "we could not be happier." word came monday of the birth after at least ten hours of labor with william at kate's side. an 8-pound, 6-ounce boy, the prince of cambridge, name unknown, born at 4:24 p.m. local time. the couple waited four hours before telling the public in order to spend time with their new son. >> good morning. she's in labor. the duchess of cambridge heads to the hospital. >> on the hottest day in london
7:04 am
in years, the day began with news kate had entered the hospital in the early stages of labor. the crowds gathered eagerly awaiting the news. breaking news right now. we understand that a new baby boy has been born. with a modern touch, the world first learned of the birth from an e-mailed press release after which, as tradition, the birth announcement left the hospital traveling the two miles to buckingham palace. on the golden easel outside the palace gate, the same one used at william's birth 31 years ago, all to the joy of a huge crowd. >> okay what just happened? >> kate just had a baby boy. >> baby boy. >> oh, my god! >> it's a boy! >> yes! >> according to palace spokesman, the duke and queen of edinboro were happy with the news and said "i am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time." and just seconds ago, we did see some of those grandparents
7:05 am
arriving here, carole and michael middleton entering st. mary's hospital here. they actually came via cab, reportedly had been staying in london, perhaps the last couple of days, awaiting the good news, and now going in to meet their new little grandson, the third in line to the throne. no doubt, a very special moment as first-time grandparents. matt and savannah, you can imagine the moments inside those doors. >> yeah. natalie, thank you very much. finally, a little history behind this birth. the arrival marks the first time in more than 100 years that three direct heirs to the throne have been alive at the same time. let's bring in royal expert camilla tomny and nbc news royal contributor robert jopson. good morning to both of you. camilla, this is like a super bowl for you that lasts for d s days. how are you feeling? >> feeling good, matt. still very keen to see this little baby, although i think we've still got a few hours' wait.
7:06 am
so, really, it's just anticipation here. the media frenzy continues. we have had rain, we have had sun. the best news today. >> robert, i hope you can hear me now. obviously, the thought that crosses the mind here is that at the moment or this little baby is enjoying the last few moments of anonymity forever. once his parents bring him out on to the steps of the hospital, he will be known to the world forever. do you have mixed emotions about that as someone who covers the royal family? >> i do a bit. i mean, the reality is this child is born to one day be king, which is a very privileged position, but they do, obviously, will have to protect him. he has got palaces that he can go to, such as balmoral, windsor castle and back in the palace, but i think in this modern day, it's important that william and kate do their best to protect this child from gross intrusion, the things that shouldn't be allowed.
7:07 am
obviously, he's going to have to be with the public and do a job, which is on behalf of a monarchy, which is not a elected institution, which has survived this long. >> and camilla, obviously, this little boy's mom, kate, did grow up under fairly normal circumstances. we just saw her parents arrive at that hospital in a taxi, so no limo for them. so, at least kate seems to have the foundation that she can use to try to give this little boy normalcy. >> yes, carole and michael middleton showing up in a cab, if you believe, and looking very happy here to be visiting the lindo wing. and yes, as you said, a very normal upbringing for kate, a privileged one, very middle class upbringing, but because of the family visits, the parents were able to stay home and bring up the kids equally. i think william has found stability with the middleton family. don't forget, he has a lot of turmoil in his childhood with the breakdown of his parents' marriage.
7:08 am
by comparison, the middletons' steady as a rock. >> 30 seconds left, robert. fill in the blank -- his royal highness prince blank of cambridge. what's it going to be? i'll give you each ten seconds. >> we've said this before. i said jonathan, but i'm only joking. i think james is up there and so is george. george seems to be the favorite. >> i think george and i'm definitely putting money on the middle name being philip, or at least one of them being philip. >> interesting take. camilla, thank you very much. robert, thank you as well. we'll have more on the royal birth coming up, including what the future could hold, and of course, when the duke and duchess appear at that door, we will bring that appearance for you live. well, i'm going to put it to you. do you have a guess at the name? >> george. >> you're going with george. >> george. >> george or edward. >> by george, i think we've got it! george, it's a go, everybody. meantime, another big news story we're following. there was a frightening incident that temporarily closed one of the nation's busiest airports. the nose gear of a crowded
