between green valley and clydesdale. yesterday quite a bit happening. we'll get a review of what happened in a couple of seconds. there's one-way traffic control for this portion of the danville, alamo area. that will be the case until 6:00 a.m. right now we're headed back to the desk. >> actually we're learning new information about one of europe's worst rail disasters in decades. at least 77 were killed, more than 140 others were hurt when the train jumped the tracks while going around a curve in northwestern spain yesterday. recovery crews now using the crane to lift the rail cars from the wreckage searching for any possible survivors. the cause of the crash is under investigation, but there are reports the train was traveling too fast through the area. spain's interior ministry says terrorism has been ruled out. also this morning, closer to home, contra costa county officials working to figure out exactly what went wrong with the county's emergency alert system and also how to fix it.

the county issued an alert after a gas leak in alamo yesterday. but it went out to people outside of the affected area, and with little detail. the alarming text message telling people to evacuate the county immediately, but it did not say why. the county thinks the emergency warning system worked just fine, but another system may have had a glitch tied to a computer upgrade. workers at at the la boulange say they took it the seriously. >> i came to inform my co-woerks. they looked at the text message and we swiftly evacuate everyone out of the premises. >> i had no idea until we googled it. it said there was a gas leak on danville boulevard in alamo. >> businesses affected by that fallity alert will soon be able to file for compensation. initial issue happened when an east bay mud crew hit a gas

line. 4:33. police in union city looking for possible victims after they arrested a suspected flasher. authorities say 27-year-old zenaida gonzalez exposed himself to a 14-year-old girl outside niles liquors tuesday afternoon. police arrested george zimmerman at his ho -- gonzalez. gonzalez is out on bail this morning. today hercules police trying to track down two men in connection with a violent home invasion robbery. this all happened after 10:30 on tuesday night at a home near hannah ranch blmtry school. police say a woman who lives alone was dragged from her bed and beaten by one man who claimed he was, quote, the police. that woman says she heard a second man in the room as well. police say the pair were able to get in through an unlocked

window. the victim was treated at the hospital for injuries to her face and ultimately released. hundreds of high school students who had their test scores invalidated have to tonight to decide if they'll retake the test. attorneys hired by the school district will speak to the educational testing service and the college board today about testing retakes and not throwing out the scores. the district decided earlier this week to pursue legal action. the scores were initially invalidated after the test administrators failed to follow strict seating rules. a special news conference being held later today to talk about the fate of california's biggest junior college. members of city college san francisco board of trustees address will the state's decision strip the college of its accreditation. it's supposed to happen in july 2014. ccsf has until the end of the month to appeal the ruling.

earlier this month the state accrediting commission ruling the college had not done enough to deal with its financial issues. some 85,000 students attend ccsf. byob, bring your own bag. los gatos is the latest town to consider banning plastic bags. the new proposal would ban single-use plastic bags from being handed out at most stores. retailers would also be forced to charge ten cents for paper bags, that would jump to 25 cents in 2015. the meeting starts at 7:00 tonight at the las goat toes town council. italian team luna rossa expected to sail all alone again today. the team was slated to go head-to-head with artemis this afternoon. but that team is not quite ready to race after its first boat capsized back in may ultimately killing a crew member.

yesterday the team did test out its new 72-foot catamaran nicknamed big blue. the swedish team hoping to get back to racing competitively as early as next week. you can catchall the action from today's event live on channel 11-2 or you can check things out on comcast, channel 186. a judge scheduling an august hearing on a preliminary injunction to stop the december start of the america's cup. the african-american sailing group claims the golden gate yacht club unfairly rejected the application to compete in the race. the golden gate yacht club feeling confident. they say they believe the race will go on as planned. time to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. what's in store for today? >> a little warmer for today, laura and jon. thanks for waking up with us. it's pretty early out. there we don't even tell you that. 64 degrees in livermore. 60 to start in concord.

good morning to you, san francisco. you are at 54 degrees to kickoff a friday eve like we like to call it around here. really it's actually thursday. got to get through two more work days. the weather is going to cooperate. we've got low clouds overhead, really not obstructing your view right now. you're not going to find any problems on the roadways just yet. that will likely become a factor as we head through the next couple hours. i'm going to tell you 85 in lifr more. about average for most of our coastal cities. bay side as well. 79 for fremont. 79 in oakland and 67 degrees on the way to san francisco. those microclimates certainly making that appearance. i'll let you know what's coming with this all-important weekend. the seven-day forecast is coming up. it's 4:38. even though it's early, something happening out there, mike. >> yeah, road work. road work is what's going on over here. san jose, we're looking at the drive for 101 and a few cars here. not a big deal. we'll give you the overall view

to figure out the maps for the south bay. northbound we have a little glitch with yellow. that's only down to 59 miles per hour. as you head north on 101 and 85, there's construction crew there is as well as over the 17 summit. in fact, the northbound crew should be clearing. that's probably why we see some slowing. it was down to one-way traffic control around the summit. no big deal. a very light volume of traffic right now. here at the tri-valley we have a smooth drive. don't worry, you're in the yellow zone already. that's isabel at vallecitos. that's a surface street. the volume is light as well. peninsula, a nice easy drive for northbound 101, a few headlights paste the raven wood shopping center and into the city without problems for 101 or 280. this is a good one, mike. new proof this morning, money can grow on trees, sort of. if you have the right tree. a santa clara woman says the

state is talking about buying her 40-year-old canary island palm tree to be moved to the bay bridge. the bay area toll authority wants to plant 65 to 70 of the palms. she could get $1500 for it. the state is looking all over california for trees to transplant. the goal is to have them relocated and planted by labor day weekend. that was the original opening, you'll recall, for the bay bridge. it's been now pushed back to december because of problems with busted bolts on the new western span. are you ready for food trucks? at least sfo is right now. starting today the trucks will be dishing up food every thursday at the san francisco international airport to give passengers and airport workers another option for food at lunchtime. a total of two trucks specializing in hawaiian and indian cuisine will be parked outside of terminal one. that will run from 11:00 this

strong reports from both apple and facebook. today reports are due out from dozens of major companies including samsung, amazon, starbucks and gm. analysts think amazon will post better than expected earnings and despite detroit filing for bankruptcy, the same positive news is expected for general motors. >> even the banks which were so troubled for so long have turned out very good profits. so i'd say all in all, companies are doing maybe even a little bit better than the general economy is doing. >> in an nbc "wall street journal" poll, about a third of americans think the economy will get better. one in five think it will get worse while most expect no change at all. speaking of markets, facebook, the stock to watch this morning. bertha coombs live at cnbc world headquarters here with all the details and more. good morning, bertha. >> good morning, jon. i was likely to see thumbs up

and liking on wall street for facebook today. the social networking site reporting better-than-expected earnings after the closing bell yesterday on a surge in revenues which is one of the things we're all looking for this earnings season. a lot of folks have been managing their costs. facebook, though, appears to have figured out how to make money off mobile devices. its mobile ad revenue makes up 41% of its total sales. futures meantime are lower. we're seeing red arrows across europe as well, despite upbeat economic data from there this morning. stocks ended mostly lower yesterday. we had gotten great reports. apple was terrific. it was offset by the likes of caterpillar that disappointed. data on weekly unemployment we get every thursday, also demand from durable goods and earnings from general motors, 3m, amazon and starbucks. the latter, too, should have fairly good results if i am any

indication from my shopping of late. meantime, if you're shopping for back to school, it will cost more to buy pencils and, rulers and three-ring binders. prices for school supplies are higher to the huntington bank's annual backpack index. costs are up 7%. analysts aren't exactly sure why. it's a lot of the input costs starting to be passed along. almost every basic item expected to be more expensive. some by up to ten bucks. the national retail federation thinks families will spend an average of $634 on back-to-school shopping this year, that includes clothes, supplies and shoes. those shoes are always costly. >> ber think, always good to know -- get your starbucks, your mack. >> christina loren brings us the forecast. >> i'm also a very good consumer

in the military. a bipartisan group of senators will meet with retired final mall service members to talk about possible reforms the military could make to battle sexual assault. yesterday the house passed a measure that will aid victims of sexual assault kicked out of the military because of alleged mental disorders. the measure was based on a report in the "san antonio express-news" which found 97% of women who reported a sexual assault in the military were involuntarily discharged for mental disorders. the controversial nsa surveillance program will continue for you, at least for now. the house last night voting down an amendment that would have stopped funding that program that collects americans' phone records. the obama administration, nsa officials and house republican leaders all fiercely opposing the amendment in the senate, dianne feinstein is leading an effort to change parts of the program to address privacy concerns. meantime, the former nsa

worker who leaked details of the surveillance program still hold up in moscow's airport. edward snowden's russian attorney says his client is still waiting for documents that would allow him in to russia. he says until then, snowden is simply there learning more about russian culture and hoping for asylum. the white house does continue to pressure russia to send snowden back to america. every time i hear this store tri, this is kind of like the movie "terminal" with tom hanks? this guy has been there for over a month. 4:51. this is fun, late night host jimmy fallon talks about the birth of his baby and the famous couple he'll soon be having a play date with next. a live look at fremont. let's take a look outside and see how things are shaping up. an easy drive past the truck scales. we'll give you an update on the closure, the traffic control over in the east bay coming up.
