the new york mayor's office. kelly o'donnell is here with the latest on this. good morning to you. >> good to see, you matt. part of a scandal response playbook is to say you want to talk about the issues and reach out directly to voters. anthony weiner is trying that amid calls for him to step aside and open mockery. he wrote an open letter to voters saying, "i will not quit you." anthony weiner was met with a mix of boos and jeers at a public housing hearing wednesday night. controversy has made him the target of jokes. he even made fun of himself when a moderator asked all the democratic candidates for new york city mayor to name their favorite social media. >> facebook or twitter? >> all i can say is, delgado, don't ask me. >> reporter: but no laughs earlier outside his apartment

amendment. instead you had an unusual coalition of trying to support the nsa surveillance program. you had both john boehner and nancy pelosi and michele bachmann all on the same sides of being on the side of nsa. on the other side you had a coalition of just barely a majority of the democrats in the house, just over 100, and 94 conservatives, libertarian types upset about this privacy. they are channeling. the poll shows a growing majority of fear that the government is going too far in in many ways you see the house last night reflecting where the country is. barely a majority has been found to keep this program alive. this isn't ending any time soon. more fallout over the fake pilot names that were broadcast after the deadly plane crash in san francisco. the san francisco chronicle is

reported that three veteran producers at ktvu-tv have been fired over the incident. the station erroneously broadcast four fake pilot names during its coverage of the asiana airline crash, and the ntsb fired a summer intern who confirmed those names to the tv station. one nfl rookie is already being hailed a hero this summer and he hasn't even made the team yet. titans rookie linebacker jonathan willard was on his way to training camp when the car in front of him started smoking and then it burst right into flames. willard and another man pulled the driver from her car along with her small children just minutes before it exploded. >> i just figured that i had -- >> what he said was, that he was very nervous but he didn't feel it until after he was driving to camp. >> thank you so much. meantime, president obama is making headlines. kennedy will be the next u.s.

ambassador to japan. andrea mitchell has that from washington. good morping to you. >> good morning. carolyn kennedy has no particular experience in japan but she has something the japanese consider far more important than an ambassador and that is a celebrated family name and a direct line to her very good friend in the oval office. caroline kennedy was almost born to be an ambassador, perfer, pe picture daughter in a telegenic first family. she captured our hearts all the way through her intense personal heartbreak. like her mother, very private, caroline remains a kennedy devoted to public service, as she told brian williams in 2011. >> there are so many things we all have to contribute, and there are so many things that need solving and doing. >> reporter: in 2008, she helped barack obama win the nomination over hillary clinton with a critically timed endorsement, comparing obama to her father. >> there is one candidate who offers that same sense of hope and inspiration. >> reporter: a new high profile led to a brief flirtation with

running for the senate to replace clinton. elective office was not a natural fit for this kennedy, but diplomacy could be. her grandfather, joe kennedy sr., was ambassador to great britain before world war ii, her aunt jean was bill clinton's ambassador to ireland. japan has always loved u.s. ambassadors with famous political names, and caroline's father and uncle with credited with helping japan become an economic power after the war. one potential challenge, japan has no tradition of women leaders, but experts say caroline will have an impact. >> she's a very respected figure, and her name is a respected one, so she's going to be taken very, very seriously. >> reporter: and keeping her family's legacy alive. >> i'm sure she's so mindful exactly of what disappointment means not only for the country, not only for the obama administration, but also for the kennedy legacy. >> certainly has a high profile and celebrity. does she have any particular expertise with japan? if not, what's she going to do

to prepare? maybe japanese lessons? >> reporter: no, savannah, she doesn't have experience in japan and to my knowledge she doesn't know japanese. 35% of them are career diplomats -- but are not diplomats. they learn all sorts of things, not necessarily the language but cultural practices in dos and don'ts. caroline kennedy has been chosen because she's a political star. she knows the president so well. savann savannah? >> no question about that. andrea mitchell in washington, thank you so much. now here's matt. health officials are investigating the outbreak of a dangerous intestinal illness that popped up in at least nine states so far. nbc's chief medical editor dr. nancy snyderman has the details on that. good morning to you. >> this comes from a little parasite called cyclosporin that can get in the food stream. when it does get into the food system it can spread from person

to person when they eat contaminated foods. so far the number of cases is relatively small, but it has popped up in several regions around the country and doctors are on alert. the parasite can be nasty, causing food-like symptoms that can last for up to a month. doctors say this outbreak is spreading. >> we're having to do multiple different diagnostic tests to be able to isolate this particular parasite, and there seems to be only one ant bitic that's effective. >> reporter: doctors haven't identified the source of the current outbreak or even whether these cases are connected, but cyclospora is most commonly spread by contaminated fruits and vegetables. shopping for produce, this connecticut mother now wonders if cyclosproa made her daughter sick. >> my daughter was at the pediatrician yesterday with stomach cramps and nausea. >> reporter: so far, according to centers for disease control, at least 275 cases have been diagnosed in nine states, from new jersey to texas. ten people have been

hospitalized. most of the cases occurring between mid-june and early july. symptoms include diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, and fatigue. in texas, paul littlejohn believes some grapes may have made him sick. >> those are them. >> reporter: when his symptoms persisted, he asked his doctor about it. >> and he said, yeah, there is an intestinal bug going around, so you probably have that. >> reporter: but, in fact, these symptoms can be caused by a number of illnesses. to know for certain if you have the cyclospora parasite, you need to see the doctor and get a specific test. >> this is an endemic illness. that is, it's just occurring right now. people need to be concerned, but there's no need for panic widespread. >> i'm a little surprised it's getting so much attention with only 275 cases, 10 hospitalizations. are officials concerned this could spread rapidly? >> in some cases, the numbers are going down. in some cases, there's an uptick. i think because we're coming into fresh fruits and vegetable time and people are still

importing a lot of produce, from other countries, that's a concern. >> i just want to make sure i understand. you get it from fruits and vegetables that have been tainted. once a person gets it, can that person transmit it to another person? >> most likely, if you don't wash your hands, yes. but it's most likely ingesting contaminated fruits and vegetables. once you wash your hands and rid yourself of it, it's not a problem. one antibiotic works, but it is an old school antibiotic, and it works well. not a high death rate in this case. but people who are sick are really sick. >> if you thoroughly wash the fruits and vegetables, can you take care of this? >> yes. you're not going to get this from your local farmers market. a lot of times these come from other countries. read those product labels well. even when you get the prewashed greens, don't believe it. wash them again. >> nancy, thanks very much. good to see you. >> matt, thank you. now to the royal baby who now has a very regal name, his royal highness, prince george alexander louis of cambridge. this morning he's with his

hernandez behind them. unshaven and appearing thinner than a month ago when denied bail on a murder charge, former $40 million nfl star aaron hernandez stood quietly throughout his court appearance on wednesday, at one point mouthing i love you to where his girlfriend is sitting, as family members of the man he's accused of gunning down cried. >> given the facts of the case as we know them, we're confident that aaron is going to be exonerated. >> it's really a sad day on so many levels. >> reporter: while hernandez stood in court, his ex-coach spoke for the first time since his arrest last month, largely about how the team evaluates players it hires, a system and culture that had been lauded across the nfl called the patriot way. >> we try to look at every single situation on a case-by-case basis and try to do what's best for the football team and what's best for the franchise. most of those decisions have worked out, but some don't.

>> reporter: hernandez, who has pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of a friend named odin lloyd was said to have been upset with lloyd for, "chilling" with people that hernandez had problems with during a trip the pair made to a boston bar. the alleged beef, law enforcement sources tell nbc news, may have involved information lloyd had about a double homicide last summer. police are investigating whether hernandez was involved in those killings. hernandez played in ten games after that unsolved double murder last season, scoring five touchdowns. >> that patriot way was considered the gold standard in terms of the players they brought in. now it's forever changed. that brand is forever damaged. >> reporter: this week very quarterback tom brady told a "sports illustrated" website, quote, he's moved on. earlier this month the patriots allowed fans with the hernandez jersey for other players. >> it's time for the patriots to move on. that's what our job is. our goal is the same. to be a winning football team, to be a pillar in the community.

at high speed, the train turns into a bend and derails. its cars thrown from the track. 247 people were on board. one passenger said it suddenly twisted at 9:00 p.m. local time. carriages piled up. smoke pouring from the wreckage. deadly fire, as people tried to escape. casualties were lifted through windows as through the night paramedics battled to help the injured. the bodies of those who didn't make it covered with blankets. relatives left in tears by the crash site. from the capital of madrid, coming off the trails just outside of santiago de compostela in northern spain. it was the eve of a local festival. all celebrations were cancelled. instead, people gathered to donate blood. according to witnesses at local hospitals, many of the dead were yet to be identified.

see, i'm still recovering from that big fall on the tough mudder competition, which almost killed me. and i have two huge bruises, but i'm not going to show them to you because they're on my back side. so is there science behind clumsiness? a recent study found that accident prone people do actually exist. nearly one-third of us are more likely to have an accident than others. dr. bud swannick and his team of engineers at university of delaware are investigating what's happening in the brains of accident prone people. so what did they find? >> they can't create a plan for what's going to happen next, and it could be within one-tenth or two-tenths of a second, and you're exposed to whatever is around you that could hurt you. >> that fraction of a second can wreak havoc on anyone, even world class athletes. >> i tell myself, being a little clumsy, dropping things. >> kevin doll is a professional hockey player. he's recovering from a
