today, friday, july 26th, 2013. from nbc news, this is today, with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. good morning. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. i'm matt lauer. >> i'm savannah guthrie with al roker and natalie morales who now introduces herself as natalie. >> i like the sound of that. i'll stick with it. >> we're happy to have you here. >> good to have you here. >> i was thinking when was the last time we were all together? you tracked it down, june 28th. >> we wanted you to feel at home. there you go. that's how most people remember you over the last several weeks. >> natalie lindo wing morales. >> let us begin on a friday morning with the overnight developments in the investigation of the deadly train crash in spain. nbc's keir simmons is at the

hospital this morning. keir, good morning to you. >> hey, matt, good morning. so many people were injured in that crash they're being treated at a number of hospitals here. one of the at least five americans who was injured are being treated as the investigation gets underway. the driver of the train was lead away by investigators as reports say the train was traveling at more than twice the 50 miles per hour speed limit. so the question today is was the driver to blame or was there some kind of a system failure? >> reporter: is this the man who causederup europe's worst train disaster in decades? he was the driver, now under investigation for driving too fast. on his facebook page, he has boasted about speeding posting pictures of the speedometer, 200 kilometers an hour. that's more than 120 miles per hour.

onboard, a mormon missionary, and he describes the crash as a scene from hell. he believes the train was going too fast. for most of the trip it was like 60 miles per hour but toward the end it said 194, and that was about 130 miles per hour. her husband and daughter along five americans injured. back home in virginia, neighbors are heartbroken. >> she is a phenomenal person. anyone that knew her knew she had god in her life. >> reporter: another injured was robert from houston. >> became chaos. things flew and everything. there was sudden darkness and i was thrown on one side of the train. >> reporter: his wife was badly wounded. >> she was sitting on the side where the train flipped over so everything kind of fell on her and two other people and she was under about -- under three people and about five chairs and

maybe about three or four luggages. and so i couldn't see her at all. i'm screaming out for her name. >> reporter: amateur video shows smoke pouring from the wreckage. my god the camera man said, this is a nightmare. in the chaos, robert was desperately calling for his wife. >> i was hysterical and screaming out her name just to make sure she would know we were still looking for her. >> reporter: spain in is in mourning. the king visited the hospital where his wife was critically ill. >> all she wanted was me to hug her and that's all i could do. >> reporter: while his wife is critical, she is stable. she says that doctors say that when he is by her bedside she responds. her heart rate goes up. she knows he is there. and this is heartbreaking. they were in europe for their daughter's wedding and now he

and his daughter are by her hospital bed, savannah. >> horrific story. thank you very much. back here we turn to the widening sexting scandal involving anthony weiner. he admits to sending messages to as many as three women after resigning in disgrace. kelly o'donnell is on the story for us. good morning to you. >> good morning savannah. anthony weiner keeps talking and we get new specifics. a range for how many women were involved in his secretive life of racy messages leaving open the possibility there could be more and we meet a 24-year-old woman giving her side of the online encounters and the impact of it all is showing up in new polling. >> reporter: anthony weiner helped out at a brooklyn soup kitchen where he stirred the pot again. >> it's not dozens and dozens. it's six to ten i suppose but i can't tell you absolutely what someone else is going to

consider inappropriate or not. >> feeling more heat, he offered more specifics about how many women he or his online alter ego carlos danger secretly sexted with after he quit congress in 2011. >> how many did you have with women after you resigned that >> i don't believe more than three. >> sidney weathers claims to be one of them online and by phone. >> i feel sick about it. i'm disgusted by him. he is not who i thought he was. >> reporter: she says it went on for several months, and weiner sent her pictures of himself. >> i was shocked that he was willing to do that and the fact

that it was his idea was even more shocking. >> reporter: the fallout can be daunting and measured and looking daunting for this political future. a new poll taken after the latest scandal broke shows him losing what had been a narrow lead. now christine quinn is out front with 25%. weiner drops to 16% in the poll. among democrats surveyed, 55% have an unfavorable view of weiner. weiner insists he did get treatment and is no longer sending those messages. >> i'll leave it to the voters. if they believe this is disqualifying or they will never vote for me, i understand that. >> reporter: he says he has had therapy that helped and insists the online relationships are over and said he and his wife new all this would be part of the campaign. but imagine another six and a half weeks of this before the

campaign. >> oh. thank you very much. new developments to the cleveland kidnapping case this morning and a possible plea deal for the man that held three women hostage for a decade. kevin, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt, ariel castro is expected to appear within the hour in the court behind me here, and he is expected to accept a plea deal which will spare him the death penalty. sources involved in the investigation tell nbc news that is castro plea deal reportedly calls for life in prison without parole plus 1,000 years. >> clearly the motivation for castro is to avoid the death penalty and he gets this by taking this plea deal. >> castro has been behind bars since may charged with kidnapping and raping three

women, holding them for more than a decade inside his cleveland home before they managed to escape. >> these young women suffered enough and to see a long trial go on with a lot of hurtful and dark and evil testimony given, it's not going to serve any purpose. >> reporter: earlier this month, the victims released their own video breaking their silence about the ordeal for the first time since their dramatic homecomings. >> i would say thank you for support. >> i want everyone to know how happy i am to be home with my family and my friends. >> we have been hurt by people, but we need to rely on god. >> reporter: experts say a plea deal could help speed the healing process for the three young women. >> this would allow them to put the legal proceedings behind them and move forward with their lives. >> reporter: the judge in the case spoke to the media and said

even if castro accepts the deal, he is not going to sentence him today. kevin in cleveland this morning, thank you. and now to another high profile case. a second juror from the george zimmerman tria controversial verdict. here's nbc's mark potter. >> reporter: in an interview juror b-29 said she was the one whose first vote in deliberations was to find george zimmerman guilty of second degree murder. >> george zimmerman got away with murder but you can't get away from god. and at the end of the day, he's going to have a lot of questions and answers he has to deal with. >> reporter: but the only ethnic minority juror who calls herself maddie said the jury came to agree there wasn't enough proof to find him guilty. >> as the law was read to me if you have no proof that he killed him intentionally you can't find -- you can't say he is guilty. >> we the jury find george zimmerman not guilty. >> reporter: and she stands by her verdict.

>> i stand by the decision because of the law, and if i stand by the decision because of my heart, he would have been guilty. >> in a statement made thursday trayvon martin's mother said it is devastating for my family to hear the comments from juror b-29 comments which we already knew in our hearts to be true. that george zimmerman literally got away with murder. nbc news reached out to george zimmerman's attorney but not no response. she feels the trial was a publicity stunt and feels she owes trayvon martin's family an apology. for today, mark potter, nbc news miami. >> we turn to natalie who is here with details on a cyber fraud case. natalie? >> the federal government calling it the biggest credit card hacking scheme ever. the justice department says credit card numbers were stolen from the data bases of 7-11, jcpenney, jet blue and other companies. it lasted seven years and millions were affected.

five men have been charged. ceremonies underway in north korea to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the korean war. ann curry is there covering the festivities. >> reporter: good morning from north korea where our news team is set to cover a massive military parade here tomorrow commemorating the 60th anniversary of the end of the korean war. though our movements here are tightly controlled we're getting small glimpses of the people largely cutoff from the rest of the world. arriving at night in a nation shrouded in secrecy, the world's press gets a rare invitation to go inside north korea. restricted to traveling in the capitol and only with government minders we are moved quickly. sometimes stopped from video taping and warned anti-american sentiment is high because of this anniversary. the first thing the government wanted us to see is war heros. many now in their 80s lined up

once again. all of these people are coming to mark the opening of the national cemetery dedicated to what they're calling the martyrs of the korean war. this is essentially north korea's version of arlington cemetery. the government also wanted to make sure we saw the nation's new 30-year-old leader who threatened the u.s. with another war just last april. then to our surprise, we were taken to a flower show to see an orchid grown to honor his father and grandfather. amid the flowers, military hardware. but also along the way we were able to see unscripted glimpses of a changing place. a few more cars but mostly people still get around on foot or bike. just what kind of north korea these children will grow up in will depend on how much change

this regime allows. at tomorrow's parade it's expected we'll see north korea's newest military hardware. if kim jong un also makes a speech it could signal which way he is taking this nuclear-capable nation, and as you can expect, this nation and others will be watching closely. thank you. >> thank you. new surveillance footage surfaced of aaron hernandez where he is holding a handgun in his home. the video was captured on the day his friend odin lloyd was killed. the imagines were released as part of a motion media groups. hernandez has pleaded not guilty to the murder. haliburton pleaded guilty to destroying evidence related to the oil spill in 2010. they will pay a fine and is subject to three years of probation. well, dunking a basketball,

>> you talk about members of the house. let me talk to you about what happened in congress on wednesday. the house voted by a slim majority to continue funding the very program that your son exposed. 217 to 205. you have to know that some of those 217 members are going to go back and say the reason i voted for this is because it's vital to national security and protecting the american public. based on your experience and your imagine of the situation, you don't agree with that. >> no. i absolutely do not. i absolutely do not agree with that chl certainly we have a need for a strong intelligence community and strong conventional defense but many of the same people that will go back and suggest that we must fund these obscenely expensive programs that drive massive products like companies and the group for whom michael hayden is a principle. it's all about the money.

thank you. well, this morning we wrap up investing 101, our series, by looking at retirement. how much do you really need to save to stop working and live a more comfortable life and how long is it going to take. >> she stopped working ten years ago, her husband mike, 74, stopped working just a few months ago. and they're in their 30s and they haven't started saving for retirement yet. today financial editor jean wants to change all of that. good to see you. >> nice to see you. >> they look fantastic. you don't look like you're in your 70s. >> you don't. let me start with you, you're in your 30s and haven't started saving for retirement yet but you're worried about it, right? >> it is a fear. i do want to have a savings. i want to be like them some day hopefully. unfortunately i think we're a little selfish at this age and we want what we want when we want it and we want to spend here and now. >> and you guys are retired now

but didn't start saving until you were in your 40s. how come? >> what was the reason for that? >> didn't have the money. >> there you go. makes sense. >> well, you also had an, a familiar problem for many, in the year 2000 you had about $1,000,000 back then in your nest egg and retirement money put away but you lost a lot when the markets crashed. >> 35% of it went away. >> 35% of it went away so you had to continue working. >> correct. we had our own loss tens of decades like the japanese did. >> exactly. i believe we have their income before retirement and comparing it to their after retirement. >> you'll see they're living right now on about 87% of what they were living on before retirement, which is actually fine. >> right. >> you want to be aiming to have about 85%. so they actually have a little bit of a cushion. and they're watching their expenses very carefully.

their monthly income right now is about $7,000. their monthly expenses about 6,000 and i know that ellie is careful about everything from her groceries to they even changed the plan for their prescriptions to bring the cost down a little bit. >> okay. let's move over to clarissa and keith. what do they need to do. >> they are saving $350 a month which is fantastic but it's just going into a savings account where it's not earning much interest. both of you need to open rotroth i roth iras immediately and take that $250 a month and funnel it into iras and invest it into inexpensive index funds where it can continue to grow and split the money between stocks and bonds. if you can do that for the next 0 years, just the $250 is going to be more than $300,000. if you can up it to $350 it's more than half a million and if

these hedges which are a little rough. i'm asking to bring in some grays, some more contemporary colors and get it out of the '90s. bright yellow to the shutters. make it a little cuter. the door as well. >> flower boxes. >> lighting over the door is integral. you need to have that pause before you go in. evening out the hedges and bringing that flower box up to the top so your eye goes up to the top of the house. >> that does make a difference. >> otherwise the visual line is stuck where you don't want it to be. the bottom of that rough hedge. >> simple but worth a lot. >> so simple. not very expensive. >> it'll change the price of your home. >> yes. >> let's take a look at our second home. >> i love this house. >> beautiful. >> so cute. what's missing, it's just got this really short yard. the bay looks a little overexposed. because you're really looking at the basement window instead of the beautiful bay architecture. my advice is to extend that porch over a bit. just a shallow por windchill a little bit of porch furniture makes a big difference.

house looks bigger. >> how much would a renovation like this cost somebody? >> this could be a couple thousand or do it yourself for materials under 1,000. >> what do you get in return? >> a lot of people coming to your house to look at it. and extra real estate where people are hanging out outside. when you're working with these older homes you need to make sure every square inch is absolutely utilized. bring in some extra color around the inner trim of each window gives an added sense of depth. looks a little more finished and less y how a little thing changes it. >> like framing. the eyebrow to the eye. the dress. >> let's go to the third one. >> are you blushing? >> yes. >> this always drives me crazy. i've seen this kind of house everywhere and it just looks wrong. >> why? what's wrong with it? >> i think what it is there's just too much brick. it's a bunch of grid. it looks cold.
