a little bit of pressure for you and i to keep up. early in the morning, almost 5:01. thanks for joining us, i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we have breaking news out of san francisco, a two-alarm fire turns into a police investigation at a suspected marijuana grow house in the visitacion valley neighborhood. that investigation is on going at the home which is on the 100 block of tucker avenue near bayshore boulevard and highway 101. "today in the bay's" christie smith live at the scene. she's gathering the latest details for us. good morning. >> good morning to you. some of the debris from that fire is sitting out on the street here. this is tucker street. looks like lights and tubs. firefighters tell us when they arrived it was to get inside this house. they actually had to enter through the garage and then make their way upstairs. three rooms burning on the first and second floor. they started around 12:30 and

they say there was quite a bit of rigging and unusual electronics set up inside. so that made it somewhat dangerous for them. the windows were dark, so difficult to move around. firefighters had quite a challenge. they started looking for residents, anyone sleeping inside, but they didn't find anyone. they say just getting to that point wasn't easy. >> immediately they encountered problems with forcible entry and noticed that this is obviously a highly secured building which is somewhat unusual for this type of residence. it immediately became apparent with the thick smoke as they were advancing the hose line that this was a marijuana grow operation. >> reporter: inside we're told they found 60 marijuana plants in the beginning stages of growth. that was going on in five rooms inside the home. they also found two freezer bags of buds. it's believed that most of that has already been removed this morning. but san francisco police may be back a little later.

reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." right now we have important information, traffic information to tell you about for south bay commuters. southbound highway 85 in cupertino back open this morning after a deadly overnight crash. all of the lanes reopening just before 3:00 this morning after a two-hour-long closure, this coming after a two-car crash with one person dead at the scene. the vehicles were turned around and then rerouted onto the south dianza boulevard off-ramp. officials there continue to investigate the scene. this morning a san jose woman is demanding to know why investigators have no leads in the violent stabbing death of her husband. she says someone stabbed her 35-year-old husband in this apartment carport and left him to die last month. san jose police say danny brido, junior was still alive when they found him. but he died a short time later.

brido says the most difficult part is watching her six children survive without their father. with no progress in the case, it's hard for that family to move forward. >> very discouraged at this point because there's no answers. nobody knows nothing, nobody is willing to say anything, nobody is willing to help. >> san jose police say they have no suspects. the family isoping more awareness will nudge this case forward. also this morning, the san mateo county sheriff's office investigating a series of burglaries. the sheriff's office says several vehicles along highway 1 and in downtown half moon bay were burglarized over the weekend and they believe at least one residential burglary is also connected to the crime spree. sheriff's officials say a black two-door honda with black rims was seen in the area of two of the crimes. they're now asking anybody who happens to have information to contact the san mateo county sheriff's office. a town hall meeting planned today for victims of a massive apartment complex fire in redwood city, a six-alarm fire

ripped through the hallmark house apartments on woodside road back on july 7th. one person ended up dieing. 20 people were hurt in this fire. almost 100 ended up being left homeless. the cause of this fire remains under investigation. santa cruz police are searching for the person who stole flowers, pictures and american flags from more than 500 grave sites. the items were taken sometime between friday night and early saturday morning from the oak wood memorial park cemetery. ceramic figures, solar lights and vases were also stolen as well as stuffed animals from children's grave sites. an estimated $1,000 worth of items were taken in that heist. so far no arrests have been made. a bay area soldier who died in the korean war is finally after a very long time returning home. family members will receive the remains of joseph david steinberg this morning. that will be happening in san jose. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. yes, around 7:00 this morning an airplane will be carrying the remains of army sergeant first class joseph steinberg. he fought in the korean war. he was killed over 62 years ago. it's only now that they finally identified his remains through dna technology. his infantry unit was reportedly the first one deployed to korea when war broke out. his unit was sent over there. he was captured while fighting the enemy in february of 1951, was taken prisoner. he died a couple months later in a p.o.w. camp. as i just mentioned to you, it's only recently his remains were identified through dna technology. members of his family are supposed to be here this morning as well as honor guard and the idea is they will take his remains to the golden gate national cemetery where he'll be buried in a ceremony this upcoming thursday. jeff herndon is the director of

the uso organization here in the bay area. you served in the army and korea clearly. i'm curious, from your point of view, your thoughts on seeing something like this happen? >> you know, it's a great opportunity to welcome home an american hero and say thank you for your sacrifice, for everything you've done for the american people. >> reporter: i know the uso officially doesn't have anything with regard to steinberg's case, any role. >> right. >> reporter: you've witnessed repatriation before in korea. can you give us a sense of what that's like? >> very solemn moment. there in seoul, u.s. forces korea, you have a lot of foreign troops from the united nations command all in their dress uniforms. it's a very special moment. the coffins are out there. it's all pretty silent. some music is played, a few words are said. the coffins are placed into the herses and taken away.

about 7:00 a.m. we'll see the march reern layer peel back off. we're looking good at about 10:00 a.m. with that fog kind of clinging the the coastline, a nice west early flow pushing in the cool ocean air all day long. it will be nice out there. we're expecting flight delays yet again. we have air quality issues due to a fire that's burning hundreds of miles away, south oregon. we'll talk about what that means for you if you suffer from respiratory issues or asthma. 79 degrees on the way to napa. we'll have that in your full craft coming up. 5:09. first we want to take a look at your drive, get you out the door on a high note. mike inouye. >> looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, good news. we have better flow of traffic at the toll plaza over the last few minutes, they've opened all but one of the cash lanes. it's just your third lane you see at the red night. the fast track and hov lanes are open and operating. there's a minor backup as you approach the toll lanes off to the left on your approach.

we'll look at the map. no major problems. we had a crash reported east 580 through oakland. that has cleared at fruitvale and turned out not to be a crashed vehicle, it's a pile of trash, sounds like a pretty sizable piece of trash. watch for cleanup crews. no problems here for 24. fish ranch road off highway 24 we still have reports of that crash, minor injuries to the driver. it's just south of the freeway and the off-ramp, sounds like everything is fine for that, is open and flowing. a nice drive at the north bay. speeds throughout the limit. southbound 101 towards the golden gate bridge out of san rafael. lucas valley road, reports of a crash, about ten miles off highway 1. it won't be a problem for the morning commute on the freeway. back to you. >> good to know. thanks. 5:10. taking advantage of the asiana airlines crash survivors. the new charges against an airline employee accused of capitalizing on stranded passengers. we'll talk about the major airport fighting back against

ride-sharing companies this morning, even going so far as to arrest some of the drivers. a new push this morning to put a woman from berkeley in the top spot of economists. we'll take a look in business and tech. well come back everybody. san francisco cab drivers taking time off to protest against ride-sharing operations. they're gathering on the city hall steps at noon. they say services are illegal and should be stopped. they add the, quote, bandit cabs are using creative language to work their way around and sidestep regulations. adding they believe they're also putting the public at risk.

the california public utility commissions is allowing the ride sharing companies to operate until they can come up with rules for them. meantime, officials at san francisco international are not waiting for those new rules. they say for the past month they've been citing and arresting drivers who pick up and drop off passengers at the airport. an airport spokesman says there have been seven citizens' arrests since july 10, many for unlawful trespassing. sfo issuing cease and desist letters to several ride share companies including lift, side car and uber. this morning another ride sharing company will offer sfo passengers rental cars. scott mcgrew continues our coverage. relay rides will rent out your car while you're on vacation. >> it's amazing. you take your car to the airport, you park it. while you're off scuba diving in the caribbean, a family is driving around in the bay area by your car. rely rides starts the service at

sfo. you can sign up online. here is the website. we don't expect to hear too many complaints on the airport for this one because rely rides is giving the airport a cut of the fees. when you come home from cabo, or whatever, not only are you not paying for airport parking, you're getting, say, $300 for the use of your car. a lawsuit filed in federal court claiming employees at apple stores spend far too much time waiting for their managers to inspect their bags before they can go on break or out to lunch. apple like other retailers is careful to make sure employees are not taking products out of the store. but the lawsuit says these bag checks take so long it's cutting into the employees' break times. a check of the markets with hampton pearson live at cnbc's washington bureau this morning. good morning, hampton. >> how are you doing scott in checking futures, they are higher after stocks closed lower

smoke is actually coming as far south as the bay area. want to start with our current tours, 55 in livermore, 59 in oakland and 57 degrees to start in sunnyvale. here is where we're headed throughout the day, the cool ocean air will keep temperatures really comfortable. however, even though it's going to be nice enough to get outdoors, if you suffer from respiratory issues, we want to talk about the air quality alert. low pressure stays put to the south. that will keep things nice and comfortable in the bay area. it's the central bay we're really watching. i went to our 3d graphics to pop this out and show you the areas that we're most concerned about. from santa rosa especially at the coastline all the way south and that extends as far south as santa cruz, you want to limit your outdoor activity. you'll really notice the smoke as we head through the second half of the day. we'll be left with a lot of smog. that's when you combine fog and smoke. it's going to look more like an sd day than an hd day with all that most in the forecast.

highs today will be comfortable. this is the good news, if you have to stay indoors, you can probably do so without running your ac. 77 on the way to san jose. 82 in gilroy. getting into the end of the week, temperatures stay steady until friday and we bump you up to 87 degrees. upper 80s by saturday. no 90s. i'm happy to report statistically speaking we have bypassed the warmest point of the summertime. on that note i'll hand it off to mike inouye to see what he's cooking with. >> made it through. we're looking over here, still to get to the peak of the commute. statistically speaking the hottest time of the year. the bay bridge has an easy drive. so does the eastshore freeway. that's west 80. west 80 is a concern out of hercules and toward pinole valley road where we have reports that a truck has dropped rebar in lanes. that's a concern and there's lanes of traffic. i don't see any major slowing. chp likely to do a traffic

break. so far that will be the issue coming off the carquinez bridge. not a major concern, but we continue to track that, of course. coming out of the central valley, here is tracy merging with 580 westbound. you see a good amount of slowing as the two freeways are starting to meet at the bottom of your speed. that red means speeds are below 20. on average you got a 47-mile-per-hour speed. that's average because it's so slow as you're heading toward north flynn road. a much smoother drive heading overthrow the dublin interchange. no problems for 92, guys. back to you. want to give you props. like those new graphics and billboards. 5:20 right now. a united airlines employee facing charges after investigators say he took advantage of stranded travelers of the asiana crash at sfo. investigators say sean crudup and ray chas thomas stole

joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning everyone. want to get to the breaking news out of san francisco where an overnight house fire uncovers a marijuana grow. now investigators are trying to figure out who owns the pot. the investigation on going at the home on tucker avenue near bayshore boulevard and highway 101 in the visitacion valley neighborhood. this is where "today in the bay's" christie smith is with the latest. you've been out there looking around. what do you know. >> reporter: good morning, jon. firefighters say when they first arrived on this block, they thought this fire started in a neighbor's home. they kept looking and saw smoke coming from this pink house here. inside they found a marijuana grow operation and this is some of what burned out here in the street. you can see what looks like grow lights and tubs, but they also describe an extremely hazardous situation inside for firefighters. they actually had to enter through the garage door because the front door was reinforced.

it started around 12:40 at a home on tucker. when they got inside, they found the windows and skylights actually boarded up which made it hard to get around. they say they couldn't see, couldn't ventilate like they normally would. they say they immediately started looking for anyone who might be trapped inside. no one was home at the time. getting through this house, it was really a dangerous maze. >> once we got inside, we discovered that the house was a grow operation. so for us and the fire department, it's an immediate hazard, largely because of the electrical. in this instance they jumped the meter, meaning they bypassed pg&e, grabbing power directly off the grid, and then they run kind of haphazard electrical to make the grow lights work. >> firefighters say they are dealing with more and more of these small grow operations in

homes here in san francisco. they found about 60 small plants inside and two bags of marijuana. police were here earlier. we're told they seized most of the marijuana and material from inside. should be back a little later to take another look. at this point preliminarily it looks like the fire was most likely electrical. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you, christie. it's 5:33. this morning all the workers at a florida gas plant have been accounted for after a series of massive explosions rocked a facility. take a look at the scene. fires burned through the night at the blue rhino propane plant near orlando. about two dozen people were working the overnight shift when a series of blasts went off around 8:00 our time, lasting more than half an hour initially 15 people were missing. all have been found safe. eight people were injured and transported to local hospitals. at least three are in critical condition this morning. the explosions at the propane

plant shaking houses as far as 20 miles away. >> you could still see the orange glow even from leesburg. >> reporter: you could hear the explosion? >> oh, yes. >> reporter: what did it sound like? >> real loud booms going off, shaking the house. >> an evacuation order for nearby residents has been lifted and the fire contained. an emotional scene for family members in china holding a memorial for the three girls killed in the asiana airlines crash at sfo. the memorial was planned after relatives brought home the ashes of those three teenagers. following tradition, caskets with the remains of yes mengyuan, wang lynn ji and lui yipeng were placed next to the girl's favorite fruits and drinks. the girls were killed after an asiana airlines plane crash on the runway at sfo that happened earlier this month. funeral services will be held for an 8-year-old girl shot

and killed in oakland. alicia care dine was at a sleepover at a friend's house on july 18 when someone opened fire through the front door of an apartment. the shooter, never caught. we're learning carradine's funeral will be at 11:00 this morning at the mcnary, morgan, green and jackson mortuary0 nea macarthur boulevard. the family asked the public for help in raising $4,200 to help pay for the funeral. they managed to raise more than $5,000. polls opening for the district two supervisor seat. the race between cindy chavez and water district communications manager theresa alvarado has drawn more than 17,000 ballots so far. there are nearly 120,000 registered voters. polls will open at 7:00 and close at 8:00 sharp tonight. the two women running will beside who will replace disgraced supervisor george

shirakawa, junior. he pleaded guilty to felony charges including perjury. he's scheduled to be sentenced on friday. 5:35. a bay area soldier who disappeared in the korean war more than 60 years ago is finally coming home. the soldier's remains are on the way to the san jose airport right now. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live with the story and why it's taken so long for the family to get closure on this. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura. after missing for more than 62 years, the remains of army sergeant first class joseph steinberg, those remains have finally been identified through dna and are on the way back home here to the bay area as i speak. members of his family expected to greet him when he remains arrive at norm net that. the burial ceremony will take place on thursday. sergeant first class steinberg, born in san francisco, was serving in japan when his

infantry unit became the first to be deployed to the war in korea. he was captured during combat in february of 1951. he died a couple months later in a p.o.w. camp located in what is now known as north korea. >> there's many, many still missing in action. every opportunity we have to bring them home and bury them on american soil is a great day for america as a whole. >> it's remarkable here we are over 60 years later. >> absolutely. i wasn't even born yet when that gentleman was serving in korea. i'm out here representing the american people to say welcome home and thank you for your sacrifice. >> reporter: that was the head of the uso in the bay area who coincidentally himself served many years in the army in korea. he says one reason it sometimes takes such a long time to find and return american remains is that in the korean war there were many small skirmishings that were undocumented unlike

large battles. without that paper trail it's hard to to know where and when the soldiers were killed. you add to that that north korea hasn't always been quot cooperative when it comes to allowing the u.n. inside their country to dig for remains. sergeant first class joseph steinberg was just 31 years old when he was killed in 1951. his family expected to agreement his remains when they arrive around 7:00 this morning. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> an important reminder to honor and appreciate these men and women who put themselves in harm's way. >> a great teaching lesson for kids, too. >> absolutely. history. 5:38. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren to get our check on the weather. cool and maybe little warmer? >> well, just a touch, like a degree. not that much warmer. we've got a great pattern. we're going to hold on to it at least through thursday. i want to start with live pictures this morning. this, of course, san jose. you can see the reds and oranges. that is particulate matter suspended in our atmosphere. we have a smokey sky overhead

from fires burning way to our north in oregon and an air quality alert as a result at the immediate coast. let's show you san francisco, speaking of which what a beautiful start to the day. you can kind of see something looks a little funny from this shot. it doesn't look as normal as we typically see those. the low clouds, we can see those there. getting the weird colors, pinks and oranges and reds, you'll notice for the second half of the day, what happens is we get beautiful pictures. send your pictures in and we'll feature them and give you credit. 55 in livermore, 56 in san jose. let's talk about the fog and what we're expecting as we head throughout the day. it may impact your morning drive. the smoke continues to filter to the south, it's going to be pretty smoggy today. even more so than yesterday at the immediate coast. we have unhealthy air quality as a result.

this morning a military judge deciding the fate of private bradley manning, the soldier charged in the largest leak of classified documents in u.s. history. good morning. in just over four hours we'll hear from the judge who has made a decision in this case. it's goings to be announced soon. manning is facing 21 charges. he's admitted guilt to half of them, almost half of them. there are 11 outstanding charges and they focus on larceny, aiding the enemy and espionage, the most serious charges that carry a prison term of life. talking life in a military prison. prosecutors say he knew exactly what he was doing when he leaked 700,000 pages of documents to wikileaks. some of them ended up in the hands of al qaeda. his defense team says he was trying to correct what he saw as wrongdoing in iraq and trying to get that information out, had no intention of leaking this to the enemy. now we're waiting to see what a judge has to say when she announces her verdict early this afternoon. >> a lot of layers on this one. it will be interesting to watch how it plays out. happening now, vice president joe biden and former

secretary of state hillary clinton sitting down for breakfast, dining at the naval observatory. biden is thought to be clinton's chief rival in 2016. just yesterday clinton had lunch with president obama at the white house. a new round of peace talks between israeli and palestinian negotiators starts today in washington. the discussions follow six months of shuttle diplomacy by secretary of state john kerry to help restart negotiations that broke down back in 2008. last night kerry hosting voethers from both sides for dinner at the state department. and today those intensive talks will actually get under way, this coming after israel's cabinet agreed to release 104 palestinian prisoners convicted of deadly attacks. >> two of the stars of ""the real housewives of new jersey"" are slated to make their first appearances in federal court this morning.

this is san jose. ominous sky over san jose. you see the reds and the oranges. i've been talking about this all morning long and the broken record continues. air quality alert posted up because we've got this smoke coming into the bay area from fires burning in southern oregon. you'll notice that sky as we head throughout the day. the flight delays out of sfo were attributed to smoke as opposed to fog that we typically see. let's get moving, guys, show you what's coming up today. temperatures are nice and comfortable. here is a live look. i think this is san bruno socked in with fog. you can see the fog mixed in with the smoke. let's get right to your temperatures this morning as they are crisp out there. a cool start to the day, 55 in livermore. cool conditions, onshore flow and the west early flow will keep that good marine air pumping all the way inland today. that means livermore, you'll only see highs in the low 80s yet again. low pressure stays put, anchored offshore as we head through the

next few days. that will keep that beautiful air pumping in. also it's that weird flow we're getting that's pumping the smoke in the bay area. unhealthy air quality at the coast. high ms. the 70s and 80s. no 90s in the extended forecast. as we get into the weekend, temperatures are summer like but not too hot. over to northbound 101 coming toward me, this volume of traffic starting to pump up here for north of 680 and heading towards 880. on the maps we'll show you the entire south bay overall looking good. speeds pretty much at the limit. it's this section right here where we took a look with the live camera. the yellow and orange just kicking in. this is 5:48. the first burst we talk about. things should calm down and really kick in about 6:15 in the morning. the typical trend for the morning. this evening sapp center, one direction. they're probably going to be excited to cross the street. watch that for coming through downtown after work.

just a note for the commute after work. over in the tri-valley we're looking at west 580 out of the altamont pass. coming into livermore, speeds coming into the 40s, 50s in livermore. closer to 60 as you approach the dublin interchange. 84 starting to bog down, the volume of traffic here and a smooth drive towards 680 and sunol. we'll give you a live look outside, oakland 880 north past the coliseum. activity on high street but the off-ramp is open. no problems for the flow here or downtown. the bay bridge toll plaza has the backup for all these cash lanes. fast track still a big advantage. the flashing lights are oversized. be careful. they're going to the wider lanes, but no problems. the flashing lights, the crews will clear ak, but a little slower up the upper deck. southbound 101 shows an easy drive. tracking in the north bay lucas valley road. it's a good distance off 101.

it has lucas valley closed. back to you. talks between b.a.r.t. and its largest labor unions expected to resume hours from now. they'll be talking about wages, benefits and work rules. it's also possible they'll talk about a work-around to try to keep employees on the job even after the contract extension expires on monday. yesterday b.a.r.t. said if it caves to union demands and offers pay raises above 20% over the next three years, the riders will be suffering. the agency says it would have to raise fares 18% to compensate. union leaders, they say b.a.r.t.'s math simply does not add up. meantime all other major mass transit companies in the bay area will meet today to talk about what to do in the event of a b.a.r.t. strike. the strike earlier this month snarled up traffic and crammed other bus and ferry lines. we'll, of course, continue following this story and we'll
