morning. mark, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, savannah. the blasts and flames could be seen for miles. the fire is under control as officials try to figure out exactly why this happened. >> you know, there they go, boom, boom, boom. like three, four in a row. >> reporter: explosion after explosion. some caught on live tv. authorities say they don't know what caused the fire that sparked multiple blasts at the blue rhino plant. a propane business about 27 miles northwest of orlando. >> this is one of the worst fires i've ever come across in the central florida area. >> the explosions began before 11:00 p.m. on monday and spread to tractor trailers loaded with propane tanks. the facility which fills cylinders and transports them daily held 53,000 tanks on site. >> as the fire continued to

spread there were more explosions. obviously presented problems for the fire patrol to get them under control. >> possible explosions blue rhino. we've had multiple 911 calls. possible 100 foot flames in the area. >> reporter: residents describe sounds close to a shotgun or fireworks using social media to share the news. >> we heard big booms. real loud noises. we look outside and this big fire. he came out of the house started running. i got no shoes, no phone. didn't know if it was anything close buy. anything we could do. >> reporter: 24 to 26 people were scheduled to work the night shift at blue rhino and so far all employees have been accounted for. eight people were transported to area hospitals. based on on what they know preliminarily, officials say they believe possibly this fire was caused by a combination of mechanical failure and human error. they do not think sabotage was

involved, they do not think this was a crime scene. all the residents who were evacuated have savannah, back to you. >> mark, thank you. it's judgment day for the army private that sent secret documents to wikileaks. >> a verdict is expected today in the trial of bradley manning, the army pilot accused in the largest leak of classified information in u.s. history. jim is at the pentagon with the latest. jim, good morning. >> good morning natalie. it's been three years now since bradley manning was taken into custody and today he'll learn his fate. he is accused of leaking more than 700,000 secret documents to the wikileaks website while he was an intel analyst in baghdad. the defense argues that manning is a whistleblower. that he leaks the secrets in order to uncover abuses by the u.s. military in the war on iraq. but the prosecution contends that manning is nothing but a

hacker. that he's not a whistleblower but a traitor. the most serious charges against him are aiding the enemy and espionage because many of them ended in the hands of bin laden. if convicted on either of the most serious charges the 25-year-old manning could spend the rest of his life in a military prison. jim, at the pentagon, thank you. john kerry hosted israelis and palestians at the white house. the dinner is a symbolic start to the talks between the two parties. two people were hurt when two trains collided head on in western switzerland. five of the people were recorded to have serious injuries. it's not clear what caused the crash. police are still searching this morning for an inmate who escaped from an arkansas jail.

whole thing was caught on tape. you can see 33-year-old derrick estelle on the floor. moments later he gets up and jumps through a window and runs out of the jail with the guard on his heel. he was in jail on aggravated robbery charges. that's amazing. u.s. border agents found marijuana on a bus with singer justin bieber's tour. bieber was not on the bus at the time and performed later that night in detroit. drugs and small amount of marijuana was found. the driver was cited and released. now a review of the big federal reserve and ongoing battle over tv channels. >> that's right. ben bernanke kicks off a two-day policy meeting today and the big question is will they confirm it's time to put the breaks on that easy money and will that drive interest rates higher for consumers? meantime, if you're one of the millions of time warner customers that woke up this

>> the five words the pope spoke who am i to judge, has people talking about what appears to be a change in attitudes toward gay priests and gay people. >> reporter: surprise is a hallmark of pope francis. from paying his own hotel bill the day after he was elected to his love of the crowd but nothing stunned the catholic world like his comments on the flight back from rio. toward the end of an extraordinary hour and 20 minute press conference, asked about the gay lobby inside the vatican, the pope said "if a person is gay and seeks the lord and has goodwill, who am i to judge that person? >> i think it's a good idea. >> when pope francis said he isn't going to judge anyone this is a tremendous breakthrough for the vatican. this is what the modern church should be about.

>> at chicago's holy name cathedral opinions were divided. >> i don't think he would ever condone gay marriage. it's just not natural. but there's a difference between supporting someone who is gay and supporting something that's immoral. >> but for this gay catholic it's a start. >> let's talk about this as mature adults and let's get out of our stereotypes. >> reporter: and for those in the priesthood it's perhaps most important. >> what's key here is that the pope is saying that gay people can be good people. can be good priests. >> now, while the pope offered a conciliatory message on gays he was very definitive about the issue of women priests. he said no that issue had been decided long ago by the church. matt. >> ann thompson in rome this morning. thank you very much. timothy cardinal dolan is archbishop of new york. nice to have you back. good to see you.

>> good to be with you. i'm jealous of ann over there in rome. >> if a person is gay and seeks the lord and has good will who am i to judge that person. what's your gut reaction. >> my gut reaction is that that's not surprising at all. what surprises me is people are surprised. it's been a pretty clear teaching of the church based on the words of jesus that we can't judge people. we can judge actions and the holy father was clear on that. there are certain actions that are immoral but we can never judge a person's heart. >> there's no real change here is what you're telling me. this is not a change of ideology or philosophy. the church still views it as a sin so nothing has changed there. >> maybe a tone has changed, matt, but you are correct. the church's teaching which is based on the bible and god's revelation is that sexual love is reserved only between a man and a woman in the life long life giving faith of a

relationship of marriage. any sexual relations out that would be less than god's intention. that hasn't changed. what the pope is saying don't forget there's another element to god's teaching that we treat everybody with dignity and respect and we don't judge their heart and love and respect them. >> yet it's called a watershed moment for gay priests and gays that want to be priests. what do you say about that. >> i welcome it. he has drawn attention to that second aspect of church teaching is to say look, as compelling as is god's warning against sexual immortality is also his clear will that we treat everybody with dignity and respect. >> has he overruled because benedict signed a document that banned gays from becoming priests. >> no he wldn't have overruled him.

it was benedict ii that wrote a good chunk of it and in it it's clear that homosexual people deserve love, respect and dignity while acts would be immoral. >> i want to ask you if you're on the same page of this pope. you made comments that angered some in the gay community. you said they're entitled to friendship. you wrote a blog that compared gay catholics among others to people with dirty hands and while same sex marriage is a big leap when the supreme court had that historic decision on doma, you said it was a tragic day. are you on the same page with the pope. >> yes, i think so. i appreciate the comments of one of the people introducing me because this could not be interpreted as a change in the church's doctrine or change in morals. it's a change in tone. it's an invitation from the holy

claim during those years. certainly that show will be a piece of evidence against the defendants. >> when they filed for bankruptcy in 2009, teresa talked about it in the show. >> going through this bankruptcy, if anything made us stronger. it didn't break us. >> but prosecutors now claim the couple concealed businesses they owned, rental income, and teresa's true income from the show, more than $110,000 per season. joe's attorney couldn't be reached for comment. while teresa's attorney said she will plead not guilty. usband and intained her support said i am committed to my family and intend to maintain our lives in the best way possible which includes continuing my career. >> sometimes that instant fame can lead to poor decision making. for teresa and joe reality is getting very real. >> teresa also said she hopes to resolve this matter as quickly as possible. if convicted the giudices could

>> matt damon. >> that's what's trending today. meantime, are you one of the millions of americans suffering from back pain? there's a new study and it suggests you may not be getting the proper treatment after all. >> it's one of the most common reasons for going to the doctor. back pain. more than 66 million americans suffer from it. in fact, according to the national institutes of health, 8 out of 10 people will have back pain at some point in their lives. by some estimates patients spend as much as $86 billion each year in search of relief. but buyer beware. a new study suggests less is more and cautions consumers, be careful what the doctor ordered. more often than not, doctors are turning to prescription drugs instead of over the counter medicines to treat back pain but the american college of physicians says in many cases prescription drugs are not

necessary. let's get some perspective from a sports medicine specialist at the hospital for special surgery here in new york. he is also the author of the athlete's book of home remedies. you're the perfect person to talk to about this. apparently this study has a couple of headlines and one is that the narcotics are being overprescribed when something over the counter might work for back pain. >> that's right. i was really interested to see this study and that jumped out at me as well. these are dangerous medicines so we're very careful about giving those and should be. people taking these, it's definitely user beware. they're dangerous medicines. >> i think by the time you go see a doctor with your back pain, you've tried advil and motrin and the over the counter things and they haven't worked. >> medicine can be part of the equati equation. when a nerve gets back, it kills. it hurts a lot. a short-term course of medicine can help but there's other

things that help more. >> the thing about the narcotics and stuff like vicodin or percocet or something like that, there's some analysis that shows they're not even of that much benefit for back pain. in other words, they don't offer that much relief. >> that's right. many of us don't use those much at all or just for a short period of time. >> what are the dangers of potential consequences if you do take the heavier medicines? >> you can get addicted to those medicines. we're much more interested in fixing the causes of back pain rather than dealing with only the symptoms. so the medicines are helpful for the symptoms but they don't fix the cause. >> the other big headlines is doctors maybe sending patients for high-tech treatments, scans, like mris or ct scans too commonly. is that an issue? >> that jumped out at me the most. if we just got an mri of everybody outside today, 50% of those people would have a herniated disk and wouldn't even know it. there's a lot of people walking around with bulging disks.

if you have a painful back and get an mri you think that the disk is causing the pain. that might not be the case. they sometimes give too much information. >> do you feel the pressure, i have a patient, a quick fix or explanation and it will turn every stone over? >> you bet, people want to come in and want that information as quickly as possible. my job is to fix the pain they're in and try to figure out how to make them better but sometimes imagining is not always the answer right away. we reserve those for people that have pain shooting down their legs or things that aren't getting better but we try to treat the symptoms by working on the muscles. >> and the healthcare costs go skyrocketing. >> that's a big issue as well. thank you so much. now over to matt. all right. savannah, thank you very much. oscar winner matt damon's new movie is being called one of the summer's most provocative films. he plays one of the have notes on a futuristic version of earth

right now. >> let's set it upright now. it's what and when does this take place. >> 150 years in the future and earth has basically become a third world planet and all of the haves moved off on to this space station that they have built and it sits above the earth and orbits the earth. >> which is stunning by the way. it's a really cool concept and all of us on earth are looking up at it trying to get there. meanwhile, we just kind of get whatever meager existence we can. >> your character is max. he undergoes a transformation in this figuratively and literally and i bought it completely, matt. i really did. talk about it. >> i think that's the key. neil can sell these concepts. he did this also in district 9 but a lot of research and work went into creating this look that i have on. the idea is that i have an accident at work and i have five days to make it --

>> where anything can be cured. >> so i start to take these incredible chances and risks and commit hijacking citizens to try to get up there somehow. >> you want people to sit in the theater or i sat and watched it alone, completely entertained as s sci-fi but also a call to action. somebody said this is not that far in the future. this could be now. >> any science fiction, what's great is it's talking about today. it's not really talking about the future but i think neil, the director, would two crazy if he thought anybody was saying it's a call to action. all he wants to do is make the most entertaining, just kind of kick you know what sci-fi movie that he can and that's really -- he wants to entertain more than anything. but there are these really kind of cool themes, you know, like there were in district 9. it's a really interesting movie
