including new twists in the anthony weiner cscandal. >> republicans are facing issues of their own with a war of words with chris christie and rand paul. we'll get to that in a few minutes. >> the democratic drums are beating loudly for anthony weiner to step out of the race for new york mayor but the former congressman keeps stepping up and now his campaign has another scandal. more bad news for weiner's bid to become new york city mayor. his director is apologizing after a tirade against an intern that gave information to the daily news. in a statement she writes in a moment of frustration i used inappropriate language in what i thought was an off the record conversation. it was wrong and i'm sorry.

sometime people say to me this campaign is rough, you may want to quit. >> reporter: tuesday anthony weiner issued another defiant response to the growing calls for him to get out of the race in the form of a simple one minute campaign commercial. >> quit isn't the way we roll in new york city. we fight through tough things. we're a tough city. >> reporter: political campaigns for new york city mayor aren't supposed to get this kind of national attention and weiner is struggling to stay on a local message. >> you know, i'm here in the bronx to talk about things that are important to the middle class and those struggling to make it. >> reporter: last week weiner admitted he sent lewd text messages to women even after his resignation to congress. his campaign manager quit and his poll numbers have taken a big hit. support from his mayoral run has dropped from 26% to 15%. when asked if he engaged in sexting since this latest incident he gave an answer

saying you can quibble about beginnings, middles and ends but it was a year ago. >> it's not about the candidates and the campaign or me. this is about helping new yorkers because they understand this is about them. >> reporter: here's the problem for weiner, the latest polling shows that 65% of new york city voters feel this scandal is an appropriate topic for the campaign and a majority of voters think it's time he stepped out. savannah. >> stephanie, thank you. let's turn to nbc's david gregory. he's moderator of "meet the press." good morning to you. >> good morning savannah. >> a lot of people are asking how long can weiner stay in but if he has campaign money in the bank and a high tolerance for humiliation every day in the tabloids, do you assume he stays in until election day. >> i think some part of his mind thinks if he can just get through this period that some of this will die down. may not completely go away but will die down enough for him to at least get back to talking about some of the issues he wants to talk about.

he likes to say it's not about him. it is about him. it's about his behavior and about him lying to the public about whether he was a changed person after re-signing from the congress. if he continues on this path, he is losing in the polls right now and falling farther behind but he hopes, at least that he's got some time on his side to break out of it. >> even before this latest scandal erupted people thought the goal for weiner is not necessarily to win but even to get through a campaign, answer the questions, go through the gauntlet and cleanse himself so that he can run for mayor the next time around. is that even a possibility now. >> look, anything is possible. but i don't see it based on what's happened now. i think the biggest issue for him is public trust. that's why you see the polling about people thinking this is a legitimate issue. this is not delving into his personal life. it's his active life. he's not coming clean with the voters in new york. he's having to wage a national campaign because there's so much interest in this.

even though he's in 4th place. we wouldn't pay attention to any other 4th place candidate in a race but it's unclear whether he has gotten over this behavior. it's about him and public trust and whether he stopped this behavior. >> i want you to stand by david and come back in a moment. we want a take on another big story. a heated feud on the republican side between new jersey governor chris christie and kentucky senator rand paul. peter is at the white house with that story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. these men have been mixes it up for days and the way they are trading words recently has many people convinced that the 2016 republican presidential campaign is well underway. >> this is the king of bacon talking about bacon. >> reporter: the latest in this political beef is about pork. a republican family feud growing nastier by the sound bite. kentucky senator rand paul. >> governor christie and others have been part of this give me,

give me, give me. give me all this money. >> reporter: versus new jersey governor chris christie. >> maybe he should look at the spending he brings home to kentucky. >> reporter: the first jab thrown last thursday with christie bashing lawmakers like paul that oppose some nsa surveillance programs. >> we came a long way from where we began. >> reporter: by references the victims of 9/11. >> these intellectual debates, i want them to come to new jersey and sit across from the widows and the orphans and have that conversation. and they won't. >> reporter: paul fired back on fox news. >> it's really, i think, kind of sad and cheap that he would use the cloak of 9/11 victims and say, oh, i'm the only one who cares about these victims. hogwash. >> reporter: on tuesday christie swatted away his rival's attack. >> his response is something personal against me. just get in line on that front.

>> reporter: both republicans sharpening their elbows. a possible review of things to come in 2016. this fight isn't just about two strong personalities. it also highlights the stark contrast of competing ideologies within the republican party right now. the tea party on one side and more conservatives on the other with the future direction of the gop at stake. >> peter alexander at the white house. thank you. let's bring david gregory in. two colorful characters. both have a way with words. both potential contenders for 2016 but this is about the heart of the republican party and the direction it wants to go. >> there will be a big fight in the party in part going back to 201 saying we didn't have somebody conservative in mitt romney and therefore we lost. there's a lot of people in the party saying that. this is going to be a big split about the role of government. whether it's spending and taxes or the more liberal speak

fighting against the surveillance programs and other things. that's where the fight started over national security. chris christie is going to be much more traditional as a strong national security hawk within the republican party. >> all right. david gregory. great to get your take on political stories this morning. thank you very much. sentencing dpins today in the case of the largest link of classified information in u.s. history. >> good morning. army private bradley manning faces up to 136 years in prison for leaking dpovgovernment secr to the website wikileaks but he was found not guilty on the charge of aiding the enemy. jim joins us this morning. >> reporter: the sentencing hearings begin today in the same military court that found bradley manning guilty on 20 counts of espionage and flaurau. 700,000 secrets handed over to

the wikileaks website. the judge did find bradley not guilty, the most serious charge of aiding the enemy which could have brought a life sentence. by bringing the charge it was clear that the government was out to throw the book at manning and put him away at life for a strong warning to any future potential leakers. manning still faces a maximum sentence of 136 years. while it's likely it will be far less than that. it's expected that the 25-year-old manning will spend most of the rest of his life in a military prison. all right. thank you. shocking new details this morning in the deadly train crash in northern spain last week. we now know exactly how fast the driver was going at the time and what he was doing just seconds before the train derailed. michelle kosinski is in our london bureau with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: hi, natalie. just as planes have black boxes this train had one. the train was going 120 miles

per hour when he should have been doing 50 just before he took the curve and he was on the phone. data emerging from this spanish train crash paints still an u y uglier picture of what happened. showing the experienced driver, francisco garzon blasting along at 119 miles per hour and then suddenly trying to break in the 50 miles per hour zone. at the moment it twisted, crashed and flew off the tracks the tin was going 95 and black box stages shows at the time garzon was talking on the phone with the train company. court documents say it sounded like he was also looking at documents. >> unfortunately it was not surprise. more and more in these kind of transportation accidents, you look toward distraction. what's happened before in chatsworth, california, an accident, a head on collision where an engineer blew through a red light, a stoplight and went

head on into a freight train. he was texting just 22 seconds before the accident. >> reporter: in spain, a memorial service honored the 79 dead including two americans. dozens more are still in the hospital. 22 in critical condition. from the beginning this driver has taken responsibility for his actions. the spanish press reports he told the court he had a momentary lapse and forgot where he was on the tracks. he's now accused of 79 counts of reckless homicide. natalie. michelle in our london bureau. thanks so much. on a much lighter note vice president joe biden is leaving the door slightly open this morning to appearing as a guest host during today's 9:00 hour. it all started on tuesday when we were talking about biden's breakfast with hilary clinton prompting al to extend the information on the air. >> would the vice president come in and fill in on the 9:00?

they're focussing on a prepackaged salad mix as the possible culprit. >> investigators are working to pinpoint the course from the outbreak. 372 people have been sickened in 15 states. health officials are making progress. the number of new cases has twindell twi dwindled after a peak in mid june. they identified the source of the outbreak in two states, iowa and nebraska. zeroing in on a prepackaged salad mix with iceberg, romaine lettuce, red cabbage and carrots. >> we found common distribution networks. common supplies. we believe that it's entirely linked. >> reporter: officials aren't naming the brands involved but the product has been off super market shelves for more than a month and no longer poses a threat. >> what we have been consistently telling them is continue to eat salad. >> reporter: but they're unable to say whether the outbreaks are

all related. it can be nasty causing flu-like symptoms that can last up to a month. symptoms include diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea and fatigue. danny got sick at the end of june after getting take out from a local restaurant. his doctor told him it was cyclospora. in three weeks he lost 12 pounds. >> it's something i wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. it's bad. >> reporter: the best way to protect yourself from the bug is to thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables and savannah that includes those that have already been washed or say they have already been washed. you should go through that process a second time. >> all right. thank you very much. a lot of excitement at the national zoo in washington this morning. part of the panda house is closed because apparently one of it's guests maybe expected. kelly o'donnell has that story. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. after the world's joy over the

royal baby, just wait. there is real excitement here among zoo visitors and panda experts about the possibility of a new giant panda cub. there's only four zoos in the u.s. that have giant panda. all of them on loan from china. there's excitement about a new arrival in 40 to 50 days. >> reporter: great expectations. one of washington d.c.'s most famous couples. >> they're cute and neat and the kids love it. >> reporter: giant pandas could, and we must stress could, have a new addition on the way. >> it's exciting because baby pandas are adorable. >> reporter: smithsonian's national zoo panda cam gives everyone a 24/7 glimpse but mother nature is mysterious and false pregnancies are common. they made a video showing an ultrasound machine done on her. zoo keepers are collecting clues

like a spike in her hormones last friday. >> you can't tell from her behavior. the only way is she either gives birth or you might get an ultrasound imagine. >> reporter: this potential happy news is all the sweeter after the sudden death of her newborn last september. the zoo hoped to try again. skip the panda romance, she was artificially inseminated in march. maybe we'll see a baby panda boom just two weeks ago zoo atlanta welcomed twins. >> there haven't been twins born in the u.s. for 25 years. >> reporter: back in d.c., the father seems unphased inside the panda house where the den will be kept out of public view. she is more noise sensitive so the zoo is asking for quite. she may be harder to see for awhile but visitors can get their fill of panda bears, panda everything in the souvenir shop. and the panda exhibit here does remain open. it's just the part where she

possible case of obstruction of justice that jenna just talked about. so does he have a legitimate shot at appealing a suspension if it comes down? >> well, i think, depending on what he is facing and if there is some plea bargaining going on. they say there's no plea bargaining. i think when they sweated him in tampa they wanted him to know exactly what they had. it's more than diaries. it's e-mails and they started to let him know what they had. does he have a chance to win on appeal? yeah, ryan brawn got appealed a year and a half ago but now he takes a 65 game back. >> quote from the sports illustrated article. quote, i want to be a role model, continue to be a role model, especially to my girls. so all the noise sometimes gets on my nerves, but that's it. he wants to be a role model. do you think this is a guy who fully understands the trouble he faces? >> if he doesn't then he's in complete denial or living on the

today contributor giada de laurentiis. do you know the difference between a roma or a grapevine? o a cherry? >> do you? >> no. giada has great tomato recipes. good to see you. what's the basic we need to know. >> all right. this can get a little overwhelming but this is the time of year for tomatoes. depending on where you shop, farmer's market, grocery stores, this is what you'll find. these are cherry tomatoes. they're super sweet right now. i make a fresh salsa or fresh tomato sauce. roma tomatoes you can find them all year round. make a red sauce or add red wine to them. then you have grape tomatoes which are great to pop in your mouth as a snack or roast them in the oven and make a big pot of them and serve them with meats or fish.

heirloom tomatoes. colorful, beautiful, they're still good. these are great for salads. i like to grill it and put on burgers. >> is there a go to tomato that works in the most number of recipes? probably heirlooms. >> yeah but you can't find them all year round and they're super expensive. so i would say these. >> do you ever refrigerate them? >> no it ruins the texture and kills the flavor. on your counter but not in direct sunlight. >> tomato and goat cheese. >> layers in any italian. i'm not going to make you get your hands dirty matt but you slice a tomato. it makes it easier to cut through the tomato. what you do is you add a piece of tomato and mix goat cheese with cream to soften it. spread it out like that. then you do another slice of tomato right on top and then you
