sometime people say to me this campaign is rough, you may want to quit. >> reporter: tuesday anthony weiner issued another defiant response to the growing calls for him to get out of the race in the form of a simple one minute campaign commercial. >> quit isn't the way we roll in new york city. we fight through tough things. we're a tough city. >> reporter: political campaigns for new york city mayor aren't supposed to get this kind of national attention and weiner is struggling to stay on a local message. >> you know, i'm here in the bronx to talk about things that are important to the middle class and those struggling to make it. >> reporter: last week weiner admitted he sent lewd text messages to women even after his resignation to congress. his campaign manager quit and his poll numbers have taken a big hit. support from his mayoral run has dropped from 26% to 15%. when asked if he engaged in sexting since this latest incident he gave an answer

saying you can quibble about beginnings, middles and ends but it was a year ago. >> it's not about the candidates and the campaign or me. this is about helping new yorkers because they understand this is about them. >> reporter: here's the problem for weiner, the latest polling shows that 65% of new york city voters feel this scandal is an appropriate topic for the campaign and a majority of voters think it's time he stepped out. savannah. >> stephanie, thank you. let's turn to nbc's david gregory. he's moderator of "meet the press." good morning to you. >> good morning savannah. >> a lot of people are asking how long can weiner stay in but if he has campaign money in the bank and a high tolerance for humiliation every day in the tabloids, do you assume he stays in until election day. >> i think some part of his mind thinks if he can just get through this period that some of this will die down. may not completely go away but will die down enough for him to at least get back to talking about some of the issues he wants to talk about.

he likes to say it's not about him. it is about him. it's about his behavior and about him lying to the public about whether he was a changed person after re-signing from the congress. if he continues on this path, he is losing in the polls right now and falling farther behind but he hopes, at least that he's got some time on his side to break out of it. >> even before this latest scandal erupted people thought the goal for weiner is not necessarily to win but even to get through a campaign, answer the questions, go through the gauntlet and cleanse himself so that he can run for mayor the next time around. is that even a possibility now. >> look, anything is possible. but i don't see it based on what's happened now. i think the biggest issue for him is public trust. that's why you see the polling about people thinking this is a legitimate issue. this is not delving into his personal life. it's his active life. he's not coming clean with the voters in new york. he's having to wage a national campaign because there's so much interest in this.

even though he's in 4th place. we wouldn't pay attention to any other 4th place candidate in a race but it's unclear whether he has gotten over this behavior. it's about him and public trust and whether he stopped this behavior. >> i want you to stand by david and come back in a moment. we want a take on another big story. a heated feud on the republican side between new jersey governor chris christie and kentucky senator rand paul. peter is at the white house with that story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. these men have been mixes it up for days and the way they are trading words recently has many people convinced that the 2016 republican presidential campaign is well underway. >> this is the king of bacon talking about bacon. >> reporter: the latest in this political beef is about pork. a republican family feud growing nastier by the sound bite. kentucky senator rand paul. >> governor christie and others have been part of this give me,

fighting against the surveillance programs and other things. that's where the fight started over national security. chris christie is going to be much more traditional as a strong national security hawk within the republican party. >> all right. david gregory. great to get your take on political stories this morning. thank you very much. sentencing dpins today in the case of the largest link of classified information in u.s. history. >> good morning. army private bradley manning faces up to 136 years in prison for leaking dpovgovernment secr to the website wikileaks but he was found not guilty on the charge of aiding the enemy. jim joins us this morning. >> reporter: the sentencing hearings begin today in the same military court that found bradley manning guilty on 20 counts of espionage and flaurau. 700,000 secrets handed over to

the wikileaks website. the judge did find bradley not guilty, the most serious charge of aiding the enemy which could have brought a life sentence. by bringing the charge it was clear that the government was out to throw the book at manning and put him away at life for a strong warning to any future potential leakers. manning still faces a maximum sentence of 136 years. while it's likely it will be far less than that. it's expected that the 25-year-old manning will spend most of the rest of his life in a military prison. all right. thank you. shocking new details this morning in the deadly train crash in northern spain last week. we now know exactly how fast the driver was going at the time and what he was doing just seconds before the train derailed. michelle kosinski is in our london bureau with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: hi, natalie. just as planes have black boxes this train had one. the train was going 120 miles

per hour when he should have been doing 50 just before he took the curve and he was on the phone. data emerging from this spanish train crash paints still an u y uglier picture of what happened. showing the experienced driver, francisco garzon blasting along at 119 miles per hour and then suddenly trying to break in the 50 miles per hour zone. at the moment it twisted, crashed and flew off the tracks the tin was going 95 and black box stages shows at the time garzon was talking on the phone with the train company. court documents say it sounded like he was also looking at documents. >> unfortunately it was not surprise. more and more in these kind of transportation accidents, you look toward distraction. what's happened before in chatsworth, california, an accident, a head on collision where an engineer blew through a red light, a stoplight and went

they're focussing on a prepackaged salad mix as the possible culprit. >> investigators are working to pinpoint the course from the outbreak. 372 people have been sickened in 15 states. health officials are making progress. the number of new cases has twindell twi dwindled after a peak in mid june. they identified the source of the outbreak in two states, iowa and nebraska. zeroing in on a prepackaged salad mix with iceberg, romaine lettuce, red cabbage and carrots. >> we found common distribution networks. common supplies. we believe that it's entirely linked. >> reporter: officials aren't naming the brands involved but the product has been off super market shelves for more than a month and no longer poses a threat. >> what we have been consistently telling them is continue to eat salad. >> reporter: but they're unable to say whether the outbreaks are

possible case of obstruction of justice that jenna just talked about. so does he have a legitimate shot at appealing a suspension if it comes down? >> well, i think, depending on what he is facing and if there is some plea bargaining going on. they say there's no plea bargaining. i think when they sweated him in tampa they wanted him to know exactly what they had. it's more than diaries. it's e-mails and they started to let him know what they had. does he have a chance to win on appeal? yeah, ryan brawn got appealed a year and a half ago but now he takes a 65 game back. >> quote from the sports illustrated article. quote, i want to be a role model, continue to be a role model, especially to my girls. so all the noise sometimes gets on my nerves, but that's it. he wants to be a role model. do you think this is a guy who fully understands the trouble he faces? >> if he doesn't then he's in complete denial or living on the

country don't teach computer programming and coding. the jobs outnumber students 3-1 in computer programming. we would be able to add half a trillion dollars to the u.s. economy. >> not a single state requires high school students to take a computer science class in order to graduate. it has big names vouching for the need to increase instruction. >> our goal is to hire the most talented engineers we can find. >> these teens are part of the exploring computer science program. a partnership between los angeles public schools and ucla. >> finding the basic of how you make a website and how you make a video game is interesting to me. >> learning to build personal websites and engineer robots. >> this is essential. it's learning how to write a resume. this is something my students need to know.

today contributor giada de laurentiis. do you know the difference between a roma or a grapevine? o a cherry? >> do you? >> no. giada has great tomato recipes. good to see you. what's the basic we need to know. >> all right. this can get a little overwhelming but this is the time of year for tomatoes. depending on where you shop, farmer's market, grocery stores, this is what you'll find. these are cherry tomatoes. they're super sweet right now. i make a fresh salsa or fresh tomato sauce. roma tomatoes you can find them all year round. make a red sauce or add red wine to them. then you have grape tomatoes which are great to pop in your mouth as a snack or roast them in the oven and make a big pot of them and serve them with meats or fish.

heirloom tomatoes. colorful, beautiful, they're still good. these are great for salads. i like to grill it and put on burgers. >> is there a go to tomato that works in the most number of recipes? probably heirlooms. >> yeah but you can't find them all year round and they're super expensive. so i would say these. >> do you ever refrigerate them? >> no it ruins the texture and kills the flavor. on your counter but not in direct sunlight. >> tomato and goat cheese. >> layers in any italian. i'm not going to make you get your hands dirty matt but you slice a tomato. it makes it easier to cut through the tomato. what you do is you add a piece of tomato and mix goat cheese with cream to soften it. spread it out like that. then you do another slice of tomato right on top and then you

do a little bit more goat cheese. you get the idea. >> right and i make herb oil to make it colorful. mint and basel together. very, very simple. very refreshing. very summertime. >> olive oil. >> ground salt and pepper. >> why don't you do that. >> love that. >> there you go. mix it all together. you can do this ahead of time. i hate this thing. >> that's okay. it comes out looking like that. >> so basically, then you drizzle over the the top. and you can see that the color is beautiful. a little bit of nuts for crunch. >> now we're going to grill tomatoes. >> beefsteak. you want them firm. you can season them if you want to and then just grill them and then put them over the burger. you have grilled tomatoes and a little bit of arugula. >> that's one of the greatest looking burgers.

>> you can use whatever bread you like. i like i talian bread. >> you have tomatoes and strawberries. >> if you buy a ton of tomatoes use any tomato you want. >> come in. don't be afraid. hello ladies and gentleman. >> thank you. >> we have a ton left over so i cook them and make a jam. tomato and strawberry jam. add a little sugar, a little cinnamon, a little salt and let me juice. cook it down for 45 minutes. it becomes a jam just like this and you can serve it over ice cream, over yogurt for breakfast in the morning. could you put it on toast or is that crazy. >> oh, darling. >> i didn't even plan that. >> you can put it on a weighbag >> and eat it like that. >> it looks great. >> it tastes great.

of why we all seem to think that one phone call is so important. >> or that text. when you hear that text come through you just kind of gravitate toward picking up the phone. >> even if it's hands free. >> even just yesterday there was an 8 month old child killed in a town not far from me in new jersey and the child was in a stroller and the driver slammed into several cars, two light polls and caused one light poll -- or it was a bus, rather, to hit the child and the mother was pushing the stroller there on the streets when this happened. just such a tragedy. but, again the sheriff said at that point we don't know if he was texting or talking. this distracted him and he lost control of that bus. >> we're seeing more and more of these stories. >> exactly. >> what's the answer? what do you do? tougher laws? >> there are a lot of laws. almost every state has a law against texting and driving right now. >> how do you enforce it? >> yeah. >> how do you make cars when you

get in the car it's cutting off the signal. >> there's cars doing that too. we have done different stories on that. but until that is enforced nationwide. until there is more of a cracking down policy i don't think you'll see a lot of change. >> you never think it will be you. i can do this real quick. >> split second. >> that's all it takes. >> right. well, here's an interesting story. in an interview with glamour magazine in september, jennifer anniston is taking a look and offering advice she would give herself over the past decade. this is something we have thought about. what would you tell your younger self-. as a teenager she said don't try so hard. pay attention, do your homework. go to class. in her 20s she said not to fret so much. in her 30s go to therapy. clean up all the bleep, clean up the toxins and noise as well. understand who you are. educate yourself on the self and made us think what would we tell ourselves. >> i would say all of the above.
