breaking news out of the south bay. a young woman reportedly attacked overnight just a block away from a local university. what we're learning about the incident and the search for the suspect now under way. we also have new details this morning about a potential bedbug outbreak at a good will warehouse on the peninsula. plus, it's not a strike but it could threaten this evening's commute. what b.a.r.t. workers are doing this afternoon that could affect thousands in the bay area trying to get home in time for dinner. we want to start with good news, before the sunshine comes up. look at the traffic. don't have worry about anything on this thursday, august 1st. this is "today in the bay."

i'm jon kelley. good to see you. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's first check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning, laura and jon. good morning to you at home. starting with your current temperatures right now, we are back in the 40s in some of your outlying cities like santa rosa this morning and gilroy as well. that means you'll probably need a jacket. we have mostly clear conditions and our air quality, yes, renewal in that department overnight. much better there. we'll talk about your full forecast, where we're headed for today in just a few moments. we want to say hello first to mike inouye. >> we want to take you first toward mission boulevard. this 1880 at mission boulevard. you see us partially hidden behind the trees flashing lights. there are crews blocking the mission boulevard on-ramp and the on-ramp from 680 as they have construction going on. the b.a.r.t. project continues on warren as well. lots of spots with construction, but not a problem as far as the

flow of traffic for 680 coming around the bend toward 101. we'll tell you about one south bay crash. no major injuries, but it looks like there may be a flatbed tomorrow truck on the side. not a big problem for the volume of traffic because it's very light right there. at 4:32. we have breaking news in the south bay where police are investigating reports of a woman violently attacked just a block away from santa clara university. the attack happened on the corner of lexington and main streets. that's where today in the bay's bob redell joins us live. what can you tell us, bob? >> reporter: good morning, laura. we know police will be looking into whether this attack overnight is related to an attack that took place several days ago in an area not far from here. around 1:30 this morning a young woman was attacked near this park at lexington and main. santa clara police aren't saying much right now. we have a phone call in to them.

we believe her attacker might have had a weapon, perhaps a knife. she was able to get away. the police dog did track his scent, but lost it on the santa clara community campus which is a couple blocks from here. this past friday, around 4:00 in the morning friday morning police found -- there was a woman who was raped, a sexual assault on the 2800 block of homestead road also in xhan clara, about two miles away. they are trying to figure out who that person was. it was a man who entered a bathroom window and sexually assaulted her. again, no one is saying those two incidents are related. but they did happen within two miles of each other in less than a week apart. police will be trying to figure out if these two incidents are related. bob redell, today in the babe. now to an update of another south b south bai yun versity attack. there was an on campus beating.

police believe the attacker and victim knew each other. on tuesday night the two men got into a fight. the victim was take tone the hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries. no more concessions. that's the theme of tonight's protest by b.a.r.t. unions. expected to gather at frank ag ga wah plaza at 5:00 a.m. the rally coming amid word contract negotiations not going well. talks ended last night without a settlement. union representatives say if b.a.r.t. does not budge by tomorrow morning, the union will likely issue a 72-hour strike notice. the contract extension does expire sunday night. right now the sides are at odds over salary, pension and health benefits. now if b.a.r.t. workers strike on monday, it could be worse than during the 4th of july week

earlier than normal on monday morning. our coverage will continue on air and on nbcbayarea.com. an oakland neighborhood is rallying around the families of three children shot during a sleep over at an apartment. 8-year-old alicia care dine was killed by gunfire. the other two children survived. tonight a fashion show will be held to raise money for the children's families. a former south bay sports referee comm convicted of shrew teenage girls. scott dom nor is facing more than 14 years on prison. he was convicted of 21 counts for sending pornography to teenage girls and meeting them for, quote, sexual purposes. the monterey sheriff's department started investigating him last year when he contacted

a 14-year-old girl on social media. he was later arrested to his san jose home. sentencing is august 30th. this morning we know the small plane that crashed in tahoe was headed to palo alto according to a report issued by ntsb officials. witnesses say the plane crashed shortly after taking off from the south lake tahoe airport. the pilot awas killed and his wife seriously hurt. exterminators back at a good will warehouse this morning looking for signs of a bedbug infestation. just yesterday a dog that can actually sniff out and detect those bugs went through the donation center and found absolutely nothing so far. good will officials were very concerned there might have been cross contamination with a warehouse in san francisco where the pests were found last week. treatment at that facility will take place later on today.

a u.s. soldier who died in the korean war will be buried in the bay area today. the remains of sergeant first class joseph steinberg arrived by plane in san jose on tuesday. steinberg was captured during the korean war and held in a p.o.w. camp until his death in 1951. his remains were recently identified through dna testing. stein burg will be buried at the golden gate national cemetery in san bruno where his three brothers are also buried. the fight against the deadly west nile virus continues today in the south bay. that will happen tonight, the second time in less than a week. vector control crew also be out in force in north san jose fogging for mosquitos. this is a definitive move scheduled to start at 11:00 tonight weather permitting. it will take several hours. the vector control district says west nile is very active right now in the country this year. officials warning people to protect themselves from mosquito bites and trying to eliminate

starts to build, the crews start to clear. north 880 past the coliseum, you will find more construction between the coliseum and 980. we have highway 4 with no slowing right now. the sensors are working. we have a crash on highway 4, the bypass at marsh creek. watch as you head through brend wood, discovery bay. comes out of trace si, the altamont pass moving smoothly over toward livermore. you're at the speed limit as you come through the area. you see a good amount of cars on either side. it shows you how light it is and how dark it is coming through that area as well. just always use caution. you might find the cones sticking around and a little slowing as you head toward the dublin interchange. nothing dramatic, i'm tracking that because it is a little unusual right there. looking at palo alto on the

battles. this morning the morning after pill is designed to prevent pregnancy up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. a little warning here. a kansas city company recalling more than 50,000 pounds of ground beef nationwide because it could be contaminated with e. coli. the national beef packing company issuing the voluntary recall after a sample of its product tested positive for that product. t at this point it's unclear whether any of the recalled product made it out here to the bay area. here is what you need to know and should know right now just to be safe. the recalled beef products have the establishment number est 208a. inside of that you can find that on the usda mark of inspection. the products were sold under the brand names national beef, nature source and naturewell. be on the lookout for that.

more about ariel castro's horrific past. he agreed to a plea deal that includes a minimum sentence of life in prison plus 1,000 years. prosecutors say they will describe castro's crimes in detail in the courtroom this morning. castro has pleaded guilty last week to kidnapping amanda berry, gina dejesus and michelle knight as well as 1,000 other charges including rape, assault and murder. >> my addiction to pornography and my sexual problem has really taken a toll on my life. >> the judge is expected to finalize the plea deal sometime today. at this point it is unclear whether castro's victim also be testifying. this morning president obama is expected to sit down with a group of lawmakers to see if there's more top secret information the nsa should make public in what's called hop analysis, the national security agency admits its huge databases are sweeping up calls and e-mails of americans who talk to

foreign targets. britain's "guardian" newspaper is reporting from whistle-blower edward snowden a program called ex-peace core that reportedly allows analysts to instantly read e-mails, track searches and read private messages without court approval. >> you want the person's e-mails for a week, all their internet searches for a month, whatever it is. it all pops up. you're just reading people's e-mails. >> it ought to be more transparent, more accountable. >> but the nsa and white house insists those searches are limited and legal. >> laura, you briefly mentioned him, the man accused of leaking all those classified government documents still hiding out this morning at the moscow airport. edward snowden reportedly now in good health. his father-in-law telling anderson cooper last night snowden's lawyer is open to working out a deal that would satisfy everybody in this case. the u.s., of course, wants snowden to return to america to

face charges, but snowden says he will not get a fair trial if he returns. he is seeking asylum in a number of countries including russia. here is a strange reality. all this trouble with snowden could hurt you in the checkout line. how about this, politico reporting the president of ecuador has been using the former nsa contractor surveillance scandal as a reason to pull out of trade agreements with the u.s. until now those agreements have kept ecuadorian imports of frozen broccoli, canned artichokes flowers all tax-free. the agreement expired yesterday. frozen broccoli will be subject to an import/export tax as high as 15%. all of us will be hit with higher prices. >> the flowers you sent your wife. >> i'll have to load up anyway. more than worth it. bay area little leaguers celebrating perfection after appearing on the international
