b.a.r.t. strike, do you know how you're going to get around? i'm christie smith, i'll tell you about a service that might help you out. the weekend so close, you can taste it at this point. good thursday morning. i'm meteorologist christina loren. temperatures in the 50s this morning, a couple 40s out there. only headed toward the 70s. have your full forecast in the few moments. as we look at the san mateo bridge, traffic across that span moves smoothly. we have a crash on the hayward side to tell you about that will affect the major roadway as you approach. laif look outside. look at the beautiful bay bridge this morning. just glistening, those lights out there. it's thursday, the first day of august. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning everyone. happy you're with us. we begin with breaking news in the south bay where police are investigating reports of a woman

violently attacked just a couple blocks away from santa clara university. the attack happened on the corner of lexington and main. that is where "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live with all the latest. what's going on out there, bob? >> reporter: they'll certainly be looking at whether or not this attack this morning is somehow connected to an attack on another woman that took place six days ago in an area not far from here. this morning around 1:30, a few hours ago, a young woman was attacked near this park here at lexington and main. this is not far from santa clara university campus. santa clara police are not saying much right now. we have call in from them trying to get more information. we believe her attacker, a man, might have had a weapon, perhaps a knife. she was able to get away, escape from her attacker. a police dog did track his scent, but lost it on the santa clara university campus which is just a couple blocks away. this past friday, around 4:00 in the morning, last friday, a

woman was sexually assaulted. this was on homestead road about two miles away from this location. police are still trying to find the man in that attack. they said that he entered a bathroom window and then sexually assaulted her. again, it's not clear whether these two attacks are related, but they did take place within a week of each other about two miles away from each other. reporting live in santa clara, bob redell, "today in the bay." at 5:02. breaking news out of russia this morning. the associated press is reporting something russian news agency are reporting, that is nsa leaker edward snowden has papers allowing him to leave the moscow airport. again, this news coming in from the associated press. russian news agencies quoting edward snowden's attorneys who says snowden now has papers allowing him to leave moscow's airport. we'll keep an eye on this breaking news and bring you updates throughout the morning. at 5:02.

east palo alto police asking for your help figuring out how the crash happened on pulgas avenue about 7:00 last night. police say when they got to the scene, they found a toyota camry on its side. bystanders helped pull two people from the car. they were taken to the hospital, one in critical condition. police are looking for witnesses as they try to figure out what caused the crash. a former united airlines baggage handler accused of stealing from passengers at sfo expected back in court today. george reyes has pleaded not guilty to ripping off personal property from luggage. police say they started investigating reyes after more than 50 complaints were filed by the customers out there about their missing items from their bags. the teen suspected of trying to kill a mill valley couple along with stealing celebrity chef guy fieri's lamborghini is expected in court. max wade is being held over for trial on attempted murder and

vehicle theft charges. that trial is expected to start in september. we've already got a new update on edward snowden this morning. as i told you moments ago the associated press reporting that russian news agency saying he now has papers to leave the moscow airport. we're hearing from edward snowden's attorney saying he has, in fact, left the airport. of course these developments just coming into our newsroom. we'll continue to follow it this morning. at 5:04, closer to home, tensions rising as labor unions threaten to bring b.a.r.t. to a stop once again. "today in the bay's" christie smith live in oakland where a rally is planned for later tonight. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. there are basically only four days of bargaining left to get this whole thing hammered out. today b.a.r.t.'s unions and other labor unions are going to be b gathering at frank ogawa plaza. they'll have a rally and march to b.a.r.t. headquarters, demanding b.a.r.t. make more concessions in these

negotiations. meantime there is a service that you may not know about, alert511.org. this is what the metropolitan transportation organization is hoping commuters get to know in the event that b.a.r.t.'s strike does resume. it measures traffic congestion and posts it in realtime using information from caltrans, the chp, transit operators that feed into a center in oakland. it monitors traffic cameras, fast track centers, even radar beams that are on the freeways in the south bay. sending out that info on land and water rounds that might work for you. every minute it just shoots a beam across the roadway, captures the speed, without identifying it. it's a blip we get, a minute-by-minute sense of how fast traffic is moving on any particular corridor. >> reporter: i wanted to mention about half the b.a.r.t. riders we spoke with didn't even know about it. it's certainly something to look into. at opd this morning, police transport vehicles ready for anything that may happen to move

police around. that rally starts at 5:00 at frank ogawa plaza followed by a march to b.a.r.t. headquarters. if an agreement isn't reached, the units may issue a 72-hour strike notice and that could come as early as friday. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." ferries were packed during the last strike, so san francisco bay ferry getting ready for round two. it will expand the number of boats in operation from eight to as many as 13, even borrowing boats from golden gate ferry. the boats will also depart earlier. if the strike happens, "today in the bay" is certainly here for you. you've got to get to work. we've got the work-around to help you avoid the traffic tie-ups. on monday morning our b.a.r.t. strike coverage will start at 4:00 a.m. and continue throughout the day on our air and online at nbcbayarea.com. >> you sold that promo. >> you're coming in early. >> we are coming in early.

it's 5:06 right now. a few things to celebrate. it's the 1st of august, friday eve and according to kron, a good looking weekend ahead. >> really nice out there. good morning to you jon and laura. a live picture, a fog-free start to august over the golden gate bridge. we are expecting some possible flight delays this morning. right now looking mostly clear because of the winds. look at the sustained speeds, even in san francisco at 12 miles per hour. we have a 15-mile-per-hour sustained speed in concord and calm right now in livermore. livermore, what a treat for you today, starting out about 55 degrees. only headed towards 79 degrees for the first day of august. of course, august, one of the hottest months across the bay area. this is what we're expecting. by noon today the winds will pick up, keeping our sky nice and clear this afternoon. 79 on the way inland, 70 bay side, at the coast 59 degrees, likely requiring a jacket. you can peel it off come this weekend. i'll have your seven-day forecast in a few moments.

i want to check on the drive. no b.a.r.t. strike today, mike. we're keeping tabs on that. >> we've got notice of that possibly tomorrow. we'll follow that, christie smith talking about all your options they're preparing. looking over toward the foster city approach coming across the san mateo bridge. you see the headlights off the high-rise. an easy drive across 92. we'll show you the maps from the peninsula side. look at the arrow pointing to what we showed you on the camera. easy flow for 101, 280. no problems san francisco into palo alto. on the hayward side, a smooth drive as well as you travel 880 off the castro valley y. there is a crash on the hesperian boulevard just before you get to 292 itself. this is right at the college, across the streets, reports of a car that went into a pole. no power outages reported. no major injuries from what i understand. this could be an issue. still trying to find out whether it blocks any lanes north or south of hesperian. the roadway itself still

reportedly open through that area. a nice smooth for 580, 880 through oakland as well as approaching the bay bridge. a looked at the span from my emeryville camera. we still have construction on the lower deck out of san francisco. that's not a surprise for folks. that's a beautiful view right now. >> we'll take it and soak it in, mike. thank you very much. the host of a south bay blood drive ends up being turned down for taking part in his own event. campbell mayor evan low was deferred or banned from giving blood yesterday because he is gay. the fda has imposed a lifetime ban on gay donors since back in 1983 in responds to the aids scare. mayor low calls it discrimination and is calling on the fda to review the three-decade-old ban and repeal it. >> i'm disappointed i'm not able to donate blood. certainly the criteria that was determined to figure out whether or not i would be an eligible candidate is faulty. one can simply lie on the form

awaiting president obama's signature. the house approved the bill yesterday which reduces the rates for stafford loans at double july 1st. interest rates would be tied to the stock market. another new venture for facebook. how about tv-style advertising. the social networking company planning to start selling 15-second video advertising spots on their site. that will happen later this year. a new report from bloomberg says the ads could rake in nearly $3 million per add every day. this comes on the heels of another revenue-boosting move by the company. just yesterday facebook announcing it is rolling out embedded posts. what does this mean? it means you can grab a code and then embed that content somewhere else on the worldwide web. speak of that, google apparently has open arms for new owners for google glass. you know how it works. you have to know the right people. a number of current owners telling the internet site

marketing land, they have received invitations to share the glass with a friend. they can invite one person to the glass explorer program. owners must be 18 years old and be able to pick up if device in san francisco, los angeles or new york. there is one more catch. you also have to pay $1500 for that ultimate privilege. >> sharing the funds with your fans there. it's 5:14. a jump in pages that has even the fed stunned. san mateo county credited with growing faster than anywhere else in the nation in the final three months of 2012. the bureau of labor statistics says the average weekly wage rose more than 107% to an astounding $87,000 more per year. before you start looking for jobs in san mateo county, experts say the money was not evenly distributed. san mateo county central labor council tells the "san francisco examiner" of the top 100 highest paid ceos, 45 of those are based

away toward the north bay. we have a crash reported there. there was a car swerving around and changing lanes. the latest i can gather from chp, no specifics right now. the car involved doing the hitting is off the freeway now and on city streets. they're watching for that. we'll let you know if we have anything further to report. activity at the toll plaza. also slowing we saw unrelated here. this is highway 29. it's causing slowdowns through the city. no activity as far as chp reports or construction planned. we have seen this in the mornings overall as the traffic starts to build. we'll track that as well. highway 4 the bypass at marsh creek. the slowing is not caused by the crash, just fewer cars out there. smooth drive right now. out of the altamont pass we have the build. speeds come down out of the 205 and 580 mernl. close to speed or at speed through livermore where the

dublin interchange is. northbound routes looking really good. 101, 87 and 280, you're at the limit. the limit 165, a reminder. palo alto shows a smooth drive north all the way into the city. back to you. thank you very much. three major cruise lines will start publishing crime reports on the website starting today. carnival, norwegian and royal caribbean notified congress they'll begin posting an index of major crimes reported on board their ships. since late 2010 including allegations of rape and murder. smaller lines are expected to follow suit. lawmakers have been taking a closer look at the cruise industry in recent months with some calling for more transparency among cruise lines in safety policies. federal health officials say it's too early at this point to tell if the outbreak of a severe stomach bug caused by a rare parasite is over. nearly 400 people in 15 states across the country have been sickened by cyclospora. earlier this week health officials in nebraska and iowa

say they traced the bug back to pre packaged salad, a mix they have throughout which comes to national distribution chains. at this point it's still unclear whether cyclospora outbreaks in more than a dozen other states are also linked to the produce. so far no illnesses have been reported out here in california. the family of daphne web held candlelight vigil for the 21-month-old little girl now missing for more than three weeks. last night's vigil is the second in recent weeks. the family trying to keep her story alive hoping someone will come forward with information. the toddler disappeared on july 10th when her father says he left her in the car with his 87-year-old mother to quickly run into a convenient store. since then family members have been visiting oakland neighborhoods passing out flyers. >> if anybody knows anything -- somebody knows where she is.

a lifetime ban from professional baseball. that's reportedly the punishment superstar alex rodriguez is being threatened with today. the official ruling likely coming either today or tomorrow. commissioner bud selig apparently ready to kick rodriguez out of the league for life if he tries to fight any suspensions for his connection to a florida anti-aging clinic that reportedly supplied drugs to more than 20 players. the league now accusing rodriguez of not only lying about drug use while he was also trying to sabotage the

investigation. eight other players are expected to receive a 50-game suspension as well. 5:24. new orleans saints quarterback drew brees getting a lot of support after internet news sites called him out for being, quote, a bad tipper. it started when a site called the dirty called brees for leaving a $3.00 tip at a chinese takeout restaurant. he said it was takeout and if he had dined he certainly would have paid 20%. yahoo! sports reports come saying the owner commentsed that the owner donated $888.88 to the brees foundation. he says 8 is the luckiest number. >> high profile, there's nothing you can do. >> you can't judge. at the same time -- >> crazy the things that people want to scrutinize. >> the guy gave him more money, too. >> exactly. it all worked now the the end.

well, would you look at the time... what's the rush? be happy. be healthy. good morning. i'm bob redell. we'll take you live to santa clara where there's been another overnight attack on a woman. i usually drive, but i hate being stuck in traffic, so this would really suck. planning ahead for the looming b.a.r.t. strike and why it could be worse than the strike earlier this month. overnight construction had closures for this area coming through b.a.r.t. to the south bay project.

laura. this is significant for two reasons, one that it was violent and this woman could have been seriously hurt and, two, there was another attack less than a week ago. police are looking into whether or not these two attacks are related. there's no word on that right now. what happened last night, it was a few hours ago, around 1:30 this morning, a woman was attacked near this park at lexington and main in santa clara. police are not saying much right now. we have a call into them. we believe her attacker, a man, may have had a weapon, possibly a knife. she was able to get away. a police dog was able to track his scent but lost it on the santa clara university campus which is just a couple blocks away. friday morning, six days ago, around 4:00 in the morning a woman was sexually assaulted. this was on the 2800 block of homestead road also in santa clara, about two miles away from where we're at. in that case, a man entered her bathroom window and sexually assaulted her. they are still looking for that

man. again, it is not clear. police haven't said one way or another whether that attack six days ago is related to the one, the attempted attack that took place this morning also here in santa clara. reporting live in santa clara, bob redell, "today in the bay." another update for another south bai yun verse attack. san jose state police say they've arrested a man connected to an on campus beating that sent a 22-year-old man to the hospital. police believe the attacker and the victim knew each other. on tuesday night police say the two men apparently got into some kind of fight and that attacker slammed the victim's head right into the concrete a number of times. the victim was then taken to the hospital suffering what we're being told were non-life threatening injuries. 5:32. an oakland neighborhood is rallying around the families of three chish shot during a sleepover at an apartment. 8-year-old alaysha carradine was killed by that gunfire. her 7-year-old friend and a 4-year-old boy were also hit. but they survived.

tonight fashion show will be held to raise money for the children's families at up town studios on telegraph and 18th in oakland at 6:00. a former south bay youth sports referee convicted of committing lieu acts with teenage girls sentenced today. that will happen later this month actually. 50-year-old scott domnauer now facing more than 14 years in prison. on tuesday he was convicted of 21 counts for sending pornography to three teenage girls and then meeting them for, quote, sexual purposes. the monterey county sheriff's office started investigating domnauer last year when he contacted a 14-year-old girl on social media. he was later arrested at a san jose home, sentencing scheduled for august 30th. this morning we now know the small plane that crashed in south lake tahoe last week was heading to palo alto according to a preliminary report just released by ntsb officials. witnesses say the plane crashed shortly after taking off from

the south lake tahoe airport last monday morning. the pilot, 67-year-old stephen luff ton was killed and his wife seriously hurt. investigators say it will take several months to determine the cause. this is nothing short of a critical day to avoid another b.a.r.t. strike if negotiations between b.a.r.t. and its labor unions do not progress. workers could be issuing a 72-hour strike notice tonight. >> totally spoiled here in the bay area. looking toward the bay bridge, this will get very crowded. just building the morning commute for the cash lanes. cash track big advantage, niz easy drive down the east shore. the speeds down the eastshore freeway looking at a nice smooth drive right now. as you approach the bay bridge toll plaza, you're at the limit for interstate 80, the eastshore freeway as well as 24 and 580 out of the maze. 880 a similar situation. this is highway 4 westbound where we have a slowdown through antioch and hillcrest, a new crash off the antioch bridge. more slowing over the next 20 minutes likely. as you get towards pittsburgh and bay point, that's typically the pattern as well. meanwhile over here, the highway 4 bypass at marsh kreerks an early morning crash affecting traffic a bit at the scene. the yellow is because there are more cars hitting the roadway. it typically has sloer speeds anyway. here we're looking at a slower

drive past vasco and toward the area of livermore, dublin, pleasanton. a smooth drive overall for the tri-valley. nothing unexpected there. here is the south bay with traffic flowing 101. 87 into downtown have just started to dip. the volume at 101, we'll see the speeds start to dip. a good amount of traffic as you come northbound toward alum rock. this burst sticking around. this isn't the first burst. it will ease up again and a second burst about 6:20 is when we'll start the see the speeds start to dip. back to you guys. a u.s. soldier who died in the korean war will be buried in the bay area today. the remains of sergeant first class joseph steinberg arrived by plane to san jose on tuesday. steinberg was captured during the korean war and held in a p.o.w. camp until his death in 1951. his remains were recently identified through dna testing. steinberg will be buried at
