today, thursday, august 1, 2013. >> good morning. welcome to "today." 7:00 a.m. on the west coast. i'm savannah guthrie. >> and i'm matt lauer. >> we will take you live to cleveland in just a moment. >> but first, edward snowden almost a year after receiving asylum in russia. good morning to you. >> well, edward snowden was expecting a permit to leave the airport and get some space really while he waited months, he thought, for a possible temporary asylum. but he got something much better than that. an official tast track passport.

this is edward joseph snowden's terrific to freedom. his new passport, granting him temporary asylum for one year. snowdenstranded for more than five weeks while russian authorities reviewed his asylum request. and within minutes of the news, snowden's lawyer confirmed that snowden with passport in hand left the airport. but citing security reasons, the lawyer refused to say where snowden was going. snowden's release comes just y days after eric holder sent a letter to russia authorities claiming that snowden would not face the death penalty for the espionage charges he faces and should be returned to the united states for trial. but fsh now, it appears that snowden is taking the advice of his father, lon snowden who speaking on russia television believed his son would be better off staying in russia. >> i feel that russia has the strength and resolve and conviction to protect my son, to

keep him out of the reach of those who would wish hitch harm. >> the question now, will president obama still meet president putin at a summit here in moscow scheduled for early september and just before the g-20 in st. petersburg. that meeting is now looking a lot less likely. >> thank you. we want to get the white house reaction. let's go to peter alexander on duty there. good morning. what is the fallout there? >> savannah, good morning to you. this is going to strain already tense relationships between the two countries. no immediate reaction to the officials in the white house. they're still crafting the exact language, u.s. officials are in this case. be very clear. this is not the result the obama administration wanted in this case. for the last several months, they have been pressing, they have been pressuring the kremlin to expel edward snowden from that country because there's no extradition treaty between the u.s. and russia. in many way, their hands are

tied. the president said i'm not going to scramble jets for a 29-year-old hacker. you heard from jim maceda saying just last week attorney general eric holder sent a letter to his counterpart in russia demanding that snowden be returned to the u.s. and a u.s. official told us just a couple of days ago, savannah, it would be, quote, quite disappointing if mr. snowden were allowed to leave the airport. savannah? >> up to this point, it seemed like russia, putin in particular, was trying to walk the line. now we have this happen. you've got the g-20 summit next month in russia. do you expect the president still to go? will it be any affect on that trip? >> it certainly remains to be seen. it is the first week in september that the president is supposed to travel to st. pet s petersburg, russia, for the g-20 summit. but in the days before that, he was scheduled to have a fall summit of sorts with vladimir putin, the president there who enjoys moments like this to sort of validate russian prestigious. the white house officials have not confirmed that that is taking place.

obviously it would be a significant slap in the face to the russian leader if the u.s. president chose to skip that altogether. >> all right, peter alexander at the white house for us, thank you. >> savannah, thanks. we've got breaking news in cleveland as well that we mentioned a while ago. just a short time ago, ariel castro walked into a courtroom there to face sentencing for holding three women captive in his home for about a decade. nbc's kate snow is covering this trial for us, these proceedings for us. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. we heard ariel castro say i would like to apologize to the victims but he stopped at that, indicating he would have more to say later on in the day. right now we're hearing from a cleveland detective speak on the stand before that. we heard in an e. rr. doctor an one of the first responders who found michelle knight hiding behind a curtain in the house.

the attorneys tried to stop the hearing saying they didn't think it was appropriate 20 gto get o all these details, but the judge agreed with the prosecution. they have a model of the house in the courtroom, they talked about the diaries the women kept. the diaries essential in putting castro behind bars. his fate is already sealed. when ariel castro accepted a plea deal last week, he accepted life without parole plus 1,000 years. >> you will never leave prison alive, is that clear? >> yes. >> reporter: prosecutors filed a document late wednesday describing what castro has already admitted to, that the michelle knight. he promised her a puppy for her young son if she came in his son.

he chained and gagged her. castro used chains, padlocks and zip ties to restrain the women. they were given just one meal a day and infrequent showers. they had only plastic toilets, emptied infrequently, the document said. >> the captor is now the captive 37. >> prosecutor tim mcginnty called castro the worst kind of violent sexual predator, a fraud and coward. castro told the women he had other captives and some made it home, some did not. his own son told savannah this week he's happy his father will never be able to hurt anyone ever again. >> i think that if he really can't control his impulses than he really doesn't have any value for human life, then behind his bars is where he belongs for the rest of his life. >> slowly, the families are coming out.

fathered with amanda barry, we've been told by the prosecutor there's absolutely zero hope that castro will have any visitation rights to that daughter. >> kate snow in cleveland. thank you very much. here's savannah. we've got new information on the steroid scandal and possible punishment for aaron rodriguez. >> many people wonder if a-rod has played his final game. major league baseball is reportedly ready to bring a hammer down on him tomorrow with a possible lifetime ban. nbc sports is reporting that major league baseball has given alex rodriguez a choice. sdriek a deal for a long extension that could extend until he's nearly 40, or major league baseball will move to ban him for life. >> he's coming awe of two hip surgeries and 40 years old, the general sense is that, you know, it would be a very good time to retire, take the ban and go.

>> a-rod's lawyers have vowed to appeal any suspension, but if there's no deal and commissioner bud selig bans rodriguez for life, the punishment that kept pete rose out of the hall of fame for gambling, a-rod's ability to appeal would be limited. the new york daily news reports that baseball's investigation has turned up e-mails, text messages and more, even evidence that rodriguez interfered with the investigation. in a new "sports illustrated" cover story, rodriguez said i'm not giving up. i have tremendous faith and hopefully there's a couple more chapters to this book and hopefully there's a happy ending somewhere. i have faith. but at age 38, having admitted to using steroids in the past, and now the prospect oof a lengthy suspension at best, speculation grows about whether he'll wear yankee pinstripes or any other team uniform for that matter, ever again. a-rod has made more than $350 million in his career. he stands to lose a significant amount of money going forward. guys, back to you.

parole, noting simpson's positive institutional record and minimal criminal history. >> even though o.j. got parole on some of those charges, he was originally sentenced to more charges, and those start to trigger now. so he has to serve at least four more years before he has any chance of getting out. >> reporter: in may simpson asked a judge for a new trial, claiming he was given poor legal advice from his original lawyer. >> i followed what i thought the law. >> reporter: if the judge agrees, simpson could soon go free. if the request is denied, he'll stay in prison until at least 2017. >> nine years is probably a pretty fair sentence for what he did. he's going to have to continue doing his sentence. >> reporter: for the last 20 years, o.j. simpson's legal woes have captivated the nation. >> if it doesn't fit, you must acquit. >> reporter: all these years later, we are still waiting to find out what will happen to o.j. simpson next. for "today," miguel almaguer,

three to six months was in fact fast tracked to a couple of weeks by russian immigration officials. so snowden passport in hand, slipped out of the airport, unseen by anybody. accompanied by wikileaks attorney sarah harrison in a taxsy. when asked where he was going, his lawyer said, cannot tell you that. i can't even confirm in he's still in london, moscow or anywhere else in russia. but a top russian official said he hopes this snowden i think department being insignificant for russia will not affect u.s./russia relations. quite unlikely. >> yeah. thank you. sentencing is underway in cleveland for astro for imprisoning three women in his home for ten years. kate, one of the victims will be there. >> reporter: yes, we do expect michele knight to be here. natalie, this hour we are seeing incredible, dramatic pictures,

photos from inside castro's home. some of the photos show where the three women and a young girl were held. we see toys strewn around, musical instruments but also chains, heavy chains used to restrain his victims and portable plastic toilets. earlier aeri earlier ariel castro made his first remark, he sad i'd like o to -- he said i'd like to apologize to the victims. whether or not knight will speak or not. the other two are not expected to attend but the families will be here to say something on their behalf. we do expect this to take hours today as prosecutors lay out what they believe -- what castro has admitted to doing. ariel castro of course already faces life with no parole possible. plus 1,000 years. he has sealed his fate with a plea agreement and will face that punishment no matter what is said in the courtroom here

the u.s. and ecuador, the country that offered to grant asylum to snowden. ecuador's president has been threatening to pull out of a trade agreement over this scandal. what would be affected? everything from broccoli to canned artichokes to roses, all of which the u.s. imports from ecuador. broccoli could be subject to tariffs as high as 15% and almost 7% for flowers. >> and there's almost no tariffs now. you would really recognize the price difference. >> there's a side of the snowden story you may not have noticed. >> good job on rafael correa. you can roll those rs all day long. meanwhile, traendiendinging today, the popular quarterback of the new orleans saints, drew brees, defending himself over a tipping controversy. he picked up a takeout order in california at a chinese restaurant. everybody does that.

we're back with today's professionals here to talk about the stories making headlines. star jones, donny deutsch. you haven't been here in a while. you missed commenting on big stories in the news. how about the pope giving a press conference on the plane on the way back from brazil. he was asked about gays in the church, about gay priests. here's what he said. who am i to judge a gay person of good will who seeks the lord? you can't marginalize these people. some people heard that comment, they thought it was a watershed moment for gays in the church. others said it's really just a very minor shift, and it doesn't mean a lot.

where do you come down? >> i think it's consistent with the christian spirit of welcoming everybody into the church of christ. however, you didn't hear him make any changes as it relates to celibacy. so a heterosexual priest or a homosexual priest would still have to be sell bat. >> i think it's a watershed moment. we're seeing a change in the catholic church that the gay lifestyle is finally coming in. >> let me interrupt you there. it's not the gay lifestyle because the church still considers homosexual sex acts to be a sin. >> but my point, the leader of that church, i don't care if it's a country or an institution, one person can change things. he was making a big statement. who am i to judge? we're all equal. i think it was huge. >> i think it will be a watershed moment as soon as women can become priests. >> and he made that comment during the same press conference, when asked about the possibility of this, he said, no, john paul ii decided that. that issue is closed. >> it should be open and on everybody's conversation. >> you guys have also missed speaking out on anthony weiner

and the whole scandal involving the man running for mayor. i don't want to talk about what he did. i want to talk about what is the fallout now with his wife huma. she obviously has stood by him. she supported him. and now she's facing fallout. how much damage has been done to her? >> i actually felt she set feminism back 100 years. to me, it looked like she was a pure opportunist. she wants to be the first lady. i didn't buy a woman standing by her man. i bought a woman standing by her own aspirations. i think hillary pushes her way to the side. >> i was going to say that every decision that woman makes in that situation is a valid decision, and the rest of us can support -- >> didn't you go yuck? >> i'm not married to him. i went yuck the first time because he's such a jerk. but she has the right to decide whether to be married for him. >> donny brought in the hillary

aspect. she's considered a top adviser to hillary clinton who's running for president in 2016. by association, does this do damage to hillary clinton? >> she's more than an adviser, they're very close friends, and their lives are intertwined. i'm sure they're in touch, but i don't think there's advice being offered other than friendship. >> every time hillary comes forward now, it allows them to go back to monica lewinsky, which they're a long way from. >> but president clinton had already been successful. he was a president. he had accomplished things. you cannot look at anthony weiner's time in congress and say that he's successful. >> it bring the story that they left far behind, and hillary's history is good-bye. >> hillary's history is history. here's a phenomenal woman who will be run for president. >> raise your hand if you're on facebook. facebook, facebook, no? okay. facebook is about to experiment with 15-second television style advertisements. you go to your facebook page, and before you get to check in on all your friends, either you'll see a 15-second ad in its entirety, or it will run as

you're checking up in the developments of your friends' life. how do we feel about this? donny, we'll start with you. >> this is -- i don't want to say the beginning of the end for facebook, but this shows how vulnerable they are. the whole premise of social media is it's us together. when you're on google, you're searching. now there's an invasion into the whole associate of it. the whole premise is exclusivity. this is going to be the beginning of the end of the am any presence of facebook. >> do you think the stock price has gone up because people knew this was going to be another business battle? >> i think it's gone up because there's another market going up. if you think about it, you're talking to friends. >> is this an ingenious way to monetize this? they're going to make a lot of revenue. >> short term. i told you this, kids. a few years later, you look back and say it was the beginning of the end of facebook. >> all of the websites i go to, they have a little ad that comes up. >> they're not social. there's a difference between when you're on search versus the whole premise of social media, it's us, not the outsider coming in. >> i only have a minute left. here's this.

a critical care physician named sam has written a book called erasing death. one of the things he writes in this book -- i'll start with you, nancy -- within 20 years doctors are going to be able to bring people back to life up to a day after they die. you have a heart attack. you've got about 24 hours you can actually resuscitate that person. is it possible? >> yes, it's being done. research is getting there. >> 24 hours? >> however, no one -- and i've talked to several neurologists yesterday and neurosurgeons. no one says there's a claim that your brain is going to work just as well and you'll be the same person. i think we're talking about the wrong thing. it should not be cheating death but a conversation about owning one's death. all you have to do is look at south africa right now, and nelson mandela, to realize that we are not talking about death and dying in a civil way. >> how do you manage something like this? >> you don't. >> it becomes a medical possibility. >> the big question is we resuscitate people. a minute later with paddles. where do we draw the line? who's to say we should do it a day, five days?

>> have the conversation ahead of time. >> how about the lawsuit? you didn't bring my father back to life. he only died 18 hours ago. >> go back in there and try a little harder, another couple hours. you only did two hours. that's what's going to happen. >> it's not the brave new world of science. science will always outbeat us. it's the conversation ahead of time. matt, if this happened to you, what would you want? and the necessity to talk about death and dying while you're well. we don't have these conversations. >> i lost my dad recently. we spent a lot of time on this. i think that's the key point. understanding the person who's about to pass. what's their wishes? >> i'm a big fan of hospice all around the country. up next, why a growing number of families are saying good-bye to suburbia.

home prices have posted their strongest annual gains in years. some are wondering if a dramatic shift is under way. mara, good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. america's geography isn't changing, but apparently americans are as a whole generation is saying farewell to the suburbs. where are they going and why? you just might be surprised. suburbia, the proverbial american dream with white picket fences and leave it to beaver innocence. but that dream may have lost its luster. after more than 60 years, families who once fled to the suburbs are now trying to escape or avoid them all together, says author lee gallagher. >> we are in the middle of a major fundamental shift. >> a radical new housing trend is under way, says gallagher, and pretty soon a lot more families may be living like this by choice. >> this is our daughter's room. it's really small, but we've made it work.

and the bustle and the pulse of being part of something. >> reporter: grueling commutes, waning car culture, and a sense of isolation are fueling the suburban rejection, according to gallagher. what is it that people do want? >> what people want is really a sense of liveliness and neighborhood identity and community. >> reporter: of the estimated 132 million homes across the country, about 80% are in metropolitan regions, and of that 80%, more than half are in the suburbs. but for the first time in almost a century, our largest cities are growing at a faster rate than the suburbs. metro areas with 5 million-plus people saw double digit downtown population growth between 2000 and 2010, according to the u.s. census. >> sort of like proximity is the new location, location, location. it's access, access, access. people want to be near the things they want to do, and the future is going to look very different. >> reporter: that future is what denise and gary gibson are seeking by selling their

as a new school year approaches, the tragedies of sandy hook are still fresh in people's minds. since 1999, 20 students and six teachers lost their lives at sandy hook, 4 students and 1 teacher kills in arkansas, 3 students in paducah, kentucky, 12 students and 1 teacher at columbine, 27 students and 5 faculty members at virginia tech, and five girls at an amish school in pennsylvania. >> police officers will return to the newtown school district this fall. in the aftermath of the shootings there, seven states enacted laws permitting teachers and administrators to carry guns in schools. in clarksville, arkansas, teachers have undergone training

to protect their students if an active shooter enters the school. when classes resume this month, they will all carry a concealed weapon during the school day. >> david hopkins is superintendent of the clarksville school district. mr. hopkins, good morning to you. you'll actually be one of these educators this fall going into a classroom with a concealed weapon. why do you feel this is necessary? >> after the sandy hook incident occurred, that tragedy, i think superintendents and school personnel all across the country have been grappling with how can we provide a better security for our students and our faculties and our faculties on our campuses? when you sit down and have an honest conversation with yourself and you put the political correctness aside and you think, if a gunman comes through the front door of your school, what do you do? well, seconds count. we can't wait for minutes to pass. something has to be done in a matter of seconds. that's what led us to the decisions that we've made to provide our own security force on our campus.

>> and mr. hopkins, what's the reaction been in the community? the parents, folks in the community about this? >> it's been generally received very well in our community. not to say there haven't been some that didn't agree with that decision, but you would find that with just about any policy in a school district. so far, we've had overwhelming support from within our community and across the country. >> mr. hopkins, will the children know that some of their teachers may be carrying a gun albeit a concealed weapon. >> i think that that's going to be out in the community, obviously, with the press coverage that we've received. i think that most of the children probably know that that's going to take place. but, again, the reason we want to do it concealed is we wanted to try to be as a threat with the firearm wagging around on

the teachers. we want it to be concealed. we want it to be business as usual. we're not putting these people in place to be police officers in our schools. that's not their job. the only time that they would act in that role as a security officer in our school would be in the event a madman came into our school wielding a weapon, trying to do our students and staff harm. that would be the only time they would act. >> is it a prerequisite for a teacher to have a concealed weapon? in other words, if they choose not to, can they opt out of that? >> oh, certainly. this was done -- what we did, the administrative team sat down, and we looked at our staff across the district, and we kind of preselected who we wanted to approach about this, and then we went to those individuals, and we sat down and talked to them about this plan that we were trying to devise, they were all -- the members of this emergency response team all volunteered to do this. >> superintendent david hopkins, thank you very much for your time. we appreciate it. donna cherry is president of the american federation of teachers

in new jersey, and kurt lavarello is the executive director of the school safety advocacy council, good morning to you both. donna, you're a teacher. what do you think the impact would be on a child if they knew their teacher was carrying a gun? >> in today's society where students see television where, if someone gets angry, they pull a gun, a classroom, a school is supposed to be a safe haven. a classroom is someplace where magic happens, and it happens when there is a comfortable feeling between teachers and students. i would hate for students to say, oh, my goodness, if i answer the wrong question, is my teacher going to shoot me? if i make my teacher angry, is my teacher going to shoot me? >> could they make that connection? >> i think, because of the media and everything they've been exposed to with people on a regular basis they see on tv, someone got mad and pulled out a gun. i also think it impacts parents. parents many times come into classrooms to have uncomfortable conversations with teachers.

i wouldn't want parents to come in and be hesitant to say something to me with is this the teacher packing the gun? what do i have to be fearful? is i think it would make an environment of fear. >> kurt, somebody who trains teachers for certain eventualities, what's your feeling on this? does it depend on, say, the community, where they have the guns at? >> quite honestly, we're having the discussion for the very right reason, which is obviously we want to keep children safe. i understand the superintendent's position here because everybody in school district's across the country post-sandy hook are grappling with what to do to make sure their children are safe. to go as far as the extreme to say we're going to start arming teachers in schools, there's a big difference between having an armed teacher and having a well-trained law enforcement officer and a school resource officer. there's a lot of things we can do in between that. >> perhaps there's a happy medium. >> what do you think is a last resort? >> what do you think teachers think is necessary to ensure the safety of the children? >> i think they want to see good

safety preparedness. they want to make sure there's training in place. they want to make sure there's a good relationship with the local law enforcement agency, whether it's the sheriff's department, police department. there are a lot of things we can do to straighten it out on the front end before we go to necessarily the extreme of arming teachers. >> arming every pilot feels crazy too. i feel better when ip on the plane, and i know there's a federal air marshal on the plain plane to make you feel your kids are safe. >> in broward county, they're using part-time police officers who have gone through all the first response training just as that of a school resource officer. there are happy mediums in between. >> thank you. up next, all the news you need before you leave the house today. before you leave the house today. as we speak where police shut down a neighborhood after chasing a gunman, on the area of story road and diana avenue. our reporter, bob redell, is at that scene. he tells us officers do have their guns drawn, they do appear to have the gunman cornered as well. the man reportedly wearing a mask and black gloves. officers say he opened fire into a check cashing store during an attempted robbery. we continue following this story. we will have an update for you on the situation during our 11:00 news. right now, we will have a look at weather and traffic coming up right after this bleak.

illness, but he was fortunate enough to get a second chance at life. >> and now we'll meet the romanoff family in a moment, but first, howard's story. >> i was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. i was told to expect the disease to make my lungs fibrotic. that they'd stop functions within three to five years to which point i would require a lung transplant in order to breathe. the timing was accurate. just shy of four years after being on oxygen 24/7 for a while, i was placed on the waiting list for a life-saving double lung transplant. the six-month wait was filled with the unanswerable question would i receive the life-saving transplant in time to save my life? question was answered, and i had a double lung transplant in august of 2011 at new york presbyterian hospital, columbia university medical center in new york city. i was one of the lucky ones.
