last-minute contract deal is not reached. we have coverage of the looming strike. testifiny trang in fremont, talking to b.a.r.t. riders and kimberly tere monitoring negotiations in oakland a b.a.r.t. union called a news conference and then called it off at 1:30 this afternoon. do we read much into that? >> reporter: no you really can't read much into it. i can tell you both sides showed up here at 11:00 this morning. that's when they told us about the 1:30 press conference. and at 1:30, someone did come down and we were told at that time that the lead negotiator for the amalgamated transit union was tied up, "working diligently to get a contract." that's all the union worker would say. she gave no indication how the talks are going right now. meantime that clock is ticking down to that midnight deadline you can the two sides need do one of three things, come up with a new contract, extend the current one or the unions could decide to go ahead with that strike. >> the big thing i think everybody knows, everybody wants a solution. nobody's up there saying, you

know, we are gonna just -- gonna strike, not saying we are not going to bargain anymore. everybody wants a solution. as long as everybody keeps thinking they want or saying they want a solution, that's positive. >> i think most things are gonna happen today, so i think there are different people involved. wither hoping to hear something decent. we haven't seen -- as you know, we haven't seen much progress up to this point. >> reporter: big sticking points here have been salary, pension and health care, last night, after a marathon negotiating session we did hear that these major issues were, in fact, being discussed and proposals were being sent bang and forth between the two sides. the negotiations have been going on for five hours today and there's no telling how late they will continue, but we will be here. we will keep you apprised, should any new information become available. live in oakland, kimberly tere, nbc bay area news. >> kimberly, thank you for the update. most people used b.a.r.t. have been hoping no to the have to use backup plans tomorrow and now the scram bell is, of course, down to the wire. nbc bay area's stephanie trang

joins us from fremont with more on that. hello, stephanie. >> reporter: good afternoon, diane. plenty examplein willins of imp b.a.r.t. rider protest at union square in san francisco. thousand once willing to work for b.a.r.t. for less pay i took b.a.r.t. yesterday and plenty of chatter on the trains about a possible strike and here at fremont park station. a lot of people coming up asking what is going on? so, lots of anxious people, hopeful that the unions and b.a.r.t. will strike a deal. now, b.a.r.t. has an estimated 400,000 riders every day who would be impacted. the question is how are they feeling about this? are they supporting that? a poll of 475 people release friday by the bay area council said 69% disagree b.a.r.t. workers are not paid enough and those we spoke with here had a split reaction. >> i think they already get paid a decent amount considering their job. but i mean, i think that we both have to come to some sort of median and compromise. >> but they make excellent, good

money. i'm not saying they should be satisfied with that but they haven't received anything, the people behind the scenes haven't received anything in six years and that's just unjust. >> reporter: what people did agree on, that a strike will happen. everyone said the two sides have been so far apart that they are all planning on what to do in case of a strike. now, b.a.r.t. is set to offer some free bus service during peak commute hours and that is expected to take care of about 4,000 riders. again, these out of an estimated 400,000 daily riders. another alternative is carpooling, b.a.r.t. really suggesting that. if the strike does happen, sbart opening every single one of its 11 station's parking lots, including this one in fremont, open free to riders who want to carpool. a lot of different options out there you can check 511.org and our website, nbcbayarea.com, just search b.a.r.t. strike resources.

we have some new information tonight on the hit and run at venice beach boardwalk this weekend that killed one person and injured nearly a dozen others. police say the woman killed in yesterday's crash was on her honeymoon after getting married just two weeks ago. authorities identified her as a 32-year-old woman. she divide her injured husband at her side at a los angeles hospital. police have identified the suspected driver, 38-year-old nathan campbell. police say he fled the scene and then about an hour later, walked into the station and turned himself in. a surveillance camera captured images of the speeding car and pedestrians franticly trying to get out of the way. >> all i saw was a car emerging from the crowd, driving southbound on the boardwalk, just plowing through whomever was in its way. >> campbell has been booked for investigation of murder and being held on $1 million bail. investigators don't yet have a motive there. two homes were damaged this morning in a two-alarm fire in oakland. firefighters say they were called to a home at the intersection of 19th and west streets in west oakland, about

7:00 this morning. took crews nearly 2 1/2 hours to put that fire out. during that time, flames spread to a building next door, as you can see. no one injured, the cause under investigation. in the face of worldwide terror alert, u.s. embassies and consulates close third doors today in 17 countries across the middle east and africa. nbc bay area's brian mooar has the latest on what u.s. officials are calling a serious and specific al qaeda threat and what's being done about it. >> reporter: nearly two dozen diplomatic posts across the muslim world were closed on this sunday because of what's being described as the most serious al qaeda terror threat in years. >> conversation among terrorists about the planning that's going on, very reminiscent of what we saw pre- 9/11. >> reporter: lawmakers say the threat is detailed enough to warrant alarm and action. >> the when was very specific in terms of a sunday. obviously that may continue and the closures may continue. >> reporter: the state department later announced several embassies would remain

with it and we will watch to see as this approaches the coast later this week to see if it tosses any mountain thunder our way. meantime, low clouds and drizzle outside for the morning this will table news your monday morning commute, you can see the fog into stockton briefly tomorrow morning. so, fairfield, livermore, you will see the low clouds and some drizzle again possible tomorrow morning. just like we saw today, we are going to get the sunshine inland, cool temperatures on the coast, low clouds try to sweep back in. temperatures for tomorrow morning should be in the mid to upper 50s. it's one thing about the low clouds at least, they keep the temperatures up overnight. mostly in the 50s for the morning. high temperatures again tomorrow, upper 70s to near 80 in downtown san jose, mid to upper 80s south of downtown. mid-80s pleasanton, pretty comfortable, windy at times from dublin through castro valley, hayward, 63 for san francisco and the north bay, once again, throw mid-70s, not much change. inland temperatures we think toward the middle part of the week are going to cool off a bit. definitely cool by august
