breaking news. crews have knocked down a fire in san francisco's presidio this morning. the flames broke out at about 2:00. this is close to the edge of the national cemetery. crews working right along the edge of the cemetery trying to keep the flames off the headstones out there. bob redell is live on the scene has the latest details. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. this is a two-acre brush fire on the other side of the national cemetery. it is out right now, just now matter of trying to figure out what caused this fire. what ix it so unusual is this national park is not known for a fire danger. given the fog and the mist in the air and the moist ground raises the question of how did this fire start. right now the fire department doesn't know. a passerby called in the fire around 2:00 this morning. it's located in an open space by the southwest corner of the cemetery just outside the cemetery gate, fence line.

all that burned was brush. nothing else was threatened, no structure or stones or headstones. part of the challenge are that -- is finding fire hydrants. sf fire had to run trucks back and forth to fill up the high drantsz at our location, about a quarter mile away from the scene. a lot of driving back and forth. filling up with water and back and forth. they're filling up again right now indicates they're still trying to quell any hot spots that might be up there. heads up if the presidio is part of your ride in to work. lincoln boulevard we're told by the preside i don't trust will be closed between park and muraga during the commute hours. the two-acre fire at presidio is out. it's a matter of hot spots. no structures or anything of value was destroyed. reporting live at the presidio, bob redell, "today in the bay." 6:02.

a man is dead after a car flipped over and landed upside down in san jose overnight. 23-year-old man was driving a honda civic northbound on interstate 880 when it exited the bascom avenue off-ramp. investigators say the car was going too fast when it slammed into the concrete barrier and flipped over onto the 880 northbound on-ramp. the chp says the car may have flipped over three times before eventually landing upside down. passengers' body was laying outside of the car on the asphalt when the coroner arrived. the driver was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. chp say it is driver was probably intoxicated at the time of the crash. he's now been arrested on suspicion of dui. right now we want to tell you about a statewide amber alert continuing this morning. authorities right now searching for the man accused of kidnapping a teenage girl and her brother from a rural town near the u.s.-mexico border in san diego county. in a tragic twist in this one, the children's mother has been

found dead inside the suspect's home along with another victim. "today in the bay's" marla tellez is live alongside interstate 880 in san jose. she has an update on the continuing search. >> reporter: good morning. i just hung up the phone with an officer with the california highway patrol. he tells me that 109 of these electronic messaging boards are activated throughout the bay area right now. so there's a very good chance when you head out the door this morning you will come across one of these. this is northbound 880 as you approach the 101 interchange in san jose. the signs show the suspect vehicle information. we have a picture as well of a car similar to the one you should be on the lookout for. it is a blue four-door nissan versa with a california license plate 6wcu986. if you see this car, you're asked to call auth thorltoritie immediately. take a look at who officials are

looking for. first, the alleged kidnapper, 43-year-old james lee dimaggio. officials say he took off from his home southeast of san diego and is suspected of taking with him, 16-year-old hannah anderson and her 8-year-old brother ethan anderson. hannah is described as 5'7", 115 pounds with blond hair, blue eyes, and officials say she has visible piercings, her ears pierced and also an earring in her nose. ethan is 4'11", 65 pounds with sandy blond hair. this case takes an even darker turn with the death of the children's mother. 44-year-old christine anderson was found dead just last night in dimaggio's burned down home. some pretty dramatic video shows the house in boulevard completely engulfed in flames. authorities say a child also died in that fire, though they aren't saying if this child is one of anderson's. officials say christine anderson had a, quote, platonic

relationship with dimaggio. back here live the search continues for both her children, both hannah and ethan anderson. authorities want to remind you once again to pay close attention to these electronic messaging boards today as you head around the bay area. if you see anything suspicious, if you know anything about this case, you're asked to call 911 immediately. live in san jose, marla tellez, today in the bay. new this morning, a suspected u.s. drone has killed four alleged al qaeda members in yemen this morning. this as the state department is warning u.s. citizens to leave yemen because of an extremely high security threat. we've got video of the u.s. embassy in yemen. state department ordering all non-essential personnel at the embassy to leave the country. britain's foreign office has also evacuated all its staff fromyemen. 19 american diplomatic post haves been closed across the muslim world. flights at bay area airports

talking about a big rig fire, today a big rig stalled. that's keeping things really slow, even looking at the bay bridge approach, you can see metering lights are on and traffic continues to pile up in this area just because, again, not only is this a traffic trouble spot because now there's a semi that's stalled on the bay bridge. that's keeping things slow. otherwise things are looking good, no major accidents to report. once you get in to san francisco from the east bay, lots of green on the map from 280 to 101. if you are using the east bay for your route from oakland to fremont, from 880 or perhaps 680 through dublin, lots of green on the map. good news there. the only trouble spot is the bay bridge approach. back to you. thank you so much. now to an nbc bay area followup. attorneys for hundreds of high school students filing a lawsuit against the organization that tossed out ap scores. the students suing educational testing service and the college board for canceling the results of 634 exams because of seating

fire, this one in san francisco's presidio. the fire right on the edge of the national cemetery. no headstones were damaged and the fire is now out. the cause is under legislation. opening statements starting today in the military trial for the alleged ft. hood gunman. major nadal hasan facing charges of premeditated murder for the 2009 shooting that killed 13 people and injured 32 others. if convicted, he faces the death penalty. a statewide amber alert has been issued for two children from san diego county. authorities believe james dimaggio kidnapped the children after killing their mother. he's believed to be driving a blue nissan versa and may be headed to texas or canada. it is 6:15. chances are you first learned of the amber alert on your phone. >> it startled a lot of people last night. scott mcgrew, this is the first time the state of california tried out the new alert system.

>> that's right. we've seen it before in other states. amber alert by text messages, those have been around for years. the one you got last night is very different, probably looked a bit like this, going straight to your main screen. now, the system was developed by fema to be used in extreme emergencies. you won't get many of these. things like hurricane evac a accusations on the east coast. it has been done in other states. this sour first time. we understand the alert went to all cell phones with california area codes. if you're visiting from somewhere else you probably didn't get the alert. people from california that are in new york city probably did get the alert. a few weeks ago a young flight attendant was electrocuted by a knock-off phone charger. apple says it will replace after-market phone chargers in

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live from the scene with details. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning, laura. i just spoke with one of the organizers and he says he was here when more than a dozen postal inspectors and postal police came here and gave notice to everyone out front of the berkeley post office on alston way that had been camped out that they would have to leave. he said that since then they've made sure that they were not blocking access to doorways with their tents, and he says basically they decided they're staying put. he estimates that about 25

people are still left after on friday they got notice to go away. he says a couple of them did go, but others filtered back in. they are from the group save the berkeley post office. they've been camped out here since july 27th, upset with plans to sell the post office off and many more like it. it's a historic building, about 57,000 square feet. the postal inspector says they can't put signs up on the building or keep tents out on the steps, that it is a safety hazard. one protesters says it's important to keep fighting on. >> renew our resolution to stay put and keep fighting for truth and justice and equality. we think that it's a really important fight to preserve this berkeley post office. it's a precedent-setting deal. if it goes through, then it's going to be very difficult to preserve the national postal system which is a real legacy. >> we haven't seen any police out here at all this morning. what we did see when we first

now. you can see off in the distance, that is south san jose. smoke billowing out there. the chp telling us some type of building is on fire right now. fire crews are on scene. we'll try to gather more information on that one. this is 101 in south san jose, the california highway patrol tells us a boat carrying long off in the distance. an amber alert. the signs lit up on freeways statewide. this is a national amber alert. we're told two children who may be kidnapped by a man driving a blue nissan versa with california license plates. right now we have the photos for you. 16-year-old hannah anderson and her 8-year-old brother ethan. they are the two children of a woman whose body was found inside a burning home near the u.s.-mexico border. now investigators say the man suspected of setting fire to

that house and killing that woman may have kidnapped her kids. today in the bay's ail lana gomez has mon on the sur spekt and where he might be headed next. >> good morning. we're learning that the schaffer riff's department has received multiple calls and still no leads on where these children are. the child abduction sign is still lit up. the sheriff's department believes james dimaggio abducted 16-year-old hannah anderson and 8-year-old ethan anderson. he was last seen driving the four-door nissan versa you mentioned earlier. all this happened after a house fire here in san diego sunday night. when fire crews put out the fire, they found the body of 42-year-old christina anderson, the mother of those missing

children. they also found a child's body that is still unidentified at this point. we're also learning a little bit more about that suspect, james dimaggio. neighbors say he is kind, laid back and he was old friends with the mother of the children. the children even considered him an uncle, some day. family members are shocked that he's considered a suspect. the law enforcement says this is still something they're searching throughout the nation right now. sheriff's deputies say it is possible dimaggio could be armed and dangerous. they're saying if anybody has any information, they need the public to call crime stoppers or 911. as of this point there's a $1,000 reward for any information. elena gomez, nbc news. >> thank you very much for that update. in the meantime oakland police searching for a woman who disappeared from her home this week. police say 50-year-old sandra

coke was last seen around 8:30 sunday morning. her family says he's healthy and has never been missing before. she drives a 2007 mini cooper with a blacktop and off white body. a warning for people in palo alto this morning after six homes were burglarized in as many days. palo alto police are now asking people to be vigilant and lock their doors and windows. the rash of break-ins started back on july 26 with the most recent burglary august 1st. these all happened in the north palo alto neighborhoods there. the thief was believed to be on a bicycle or possibly a scooter. extra officers are out on the streets now in response to the crimes. hundreds of neighborhoods across the bay area taking part in national night out tonight. more than 100 events are planned throughout oakland. in san francisco, each police station will host a block party with a police chief stopping by. along the peninsula, san mateo

police had more than 50 block parties last year and expect a similar number this year. national night out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention. get to know your neighbors. for a complete list of events, head to our website, nbcbayarea.com. right now, back to that breaking news, updating you on the fire in south san jose. we're taking a look here, this is near the 101 and 680. anthony slaughter right now checking in and telling us about the traffic and more information on this fire. >> in fact, this happened about 20 minutes ago. we're starting to see lots of black smoke come from the structure. in fact, it's a storage facility off of 280 and mclaughlin avenue. you'll notice this is our traffic cam. it's not impending traffic. but really dark, black smoke. that's a good indicator that something is still burning. we don't know what is actually in that storage facility. that's the problem. these storage facilities sit so

welcome back everyone. we continue to follow breaking news, this time out of san jose this morning where you can still see thick black smoke ha is billowing into the air. clearly visible from 280 and mclaughlin. the actual fire itself is a storage facility, a public storage facility at 925 philippe avenue. that's just south of rancho del pueblo this morning. we have marla tellez heading to the scene right now. we don't know what possibly could be in some of those storage units. 6:40 right now. a sad scene here. autopsies being planned today on two boys who investigators believe were strangled by a snake in aapartment in canada. authorities say a python managed

line. this is near park boulevard and ambulatory loop. all that burned was brush, nothing in the cemetery. part of the challenge with that location was finding the fire hydrants. it required a lot of the trucks driving back and forth filling up with water, dumping it, filling up. that sort of thing. if you are going to be commuting through the presidio this morning, we do want to keep in mind that lincoln boulevard will be closed between park and muraga. this will be doing the commute hours according to the presidio trust. two-acre fire at the presidio is out. they're trying to figure out what caused this to burn in the middle of the night. reporting live at the presidio in sf, bob redell, "today in the bay." thank you, bob. right now this just in to our newsroom, president george w. bush is in a texas hospital this morning as we speak after undergoing heart surgery. doctors discovered a blockage in one of mr. bush's arteries.

this was during a routine checkup yesterday. this morning surgeons placed a stent to open up that blockage. reporting the surgery did go smoothly. that is good news for everyone. the former president we're told right now is in high spirits. it sounds like success on all levels. >> amazing if they can catch those things early. >> that's right. get those arteries opened up and let the flood flow. >> you need a little blood flow this morning. a chilly start to the day. >> chilly start to the day. tracking two fires. wind is certainly playing a factor. we'll check with anthony slaughter and give you the latest. 6:47. show you what we're working with in terms of winds. they're not at the strongest. as we head through out the day, they'll continue to pick up as we've seen over the past few days. a repeat performance from yesterday. the only difference is i dropped your temperatures off a couple degrees inland. you're going to see more of the same at the immediate coast. 60 in sunnyvale, 59 to start the

day in san jose. 56, good morning to you oakland. right now we have uniform conditions between san francisco and oakland. later today almost a 10 to 15-degree separation. that's because we're going to see plenty of low clouds hugging the coastline. maybe one to two hours of full sun before the fog rolls back in. we have a stubborn area of low pressure keeping conditions comfortable inland by keeping the cloud cover in place. foggy mornings to sunny days. like i said before, a couple hours of sunshine in the city. 79 degrees in livermore. 74 degrees in santa teresa and 75 degrees on the way to napa. so here is the deal. might be the last hurrah, one of the last weekts before kids go back to school. temperatures will stay pretty steady all the way through friday. if you want better beach conditions, they will arrive but not until sunday and monday. even then we're not talking

about any big heat. as promised, here's our own anthony slaughter and your morning drive. >> thank you, christina, still talking about the fire that happened earlier. you can see the smoke left behind. this is where 101 and 280 connect. you'll notice a lot of what we saw earlier, the black smoke is not in the area anymore. it does appears crews have a handle on that. let's show you our traffic maps and show you where it is in regards to the location. that's where our camera was. the fire was actually on the western side of the highway. good news is a lot of the fire was blowing away from the highway. you can see we're still talking about a little bit of a slowdown just as folks probably get a little bit of a look at what was actually occurring. you'll also notice as we get over towards the bay bridge, things are slow in richmond into emeryville. with metering lights on, you're talking a slow go across the bay bridge. let's show the metering lights. they are on. the cloud cover hanging on

tightly. let's also show you some of our other slow spods. let's flip over to the traffic maps. maybe not -- there you go. you can see towards hayward on to the san mateo bridge things are just a little slow. but really again, the major issue we were talking about earlier, that fire does appear to be out in san jose. that's good news, guys. back to you. breaking news report coming up on that, but first want to tell you about an office shooting that happened moments ago in fort thomas, kentucky. these are live pictures from the scene this morning. you see -- this is actually a reporter getting ready for a report that we won't take right now. what i can tell you about what happened, a gunman reportedly walked into a building. there are early reports it could have been a medical office and the park was evacuated. one person transported to the hospital that we know. id happened in fort thomas.

>> want to get you back to breaking news. a fire burning in san jose. this is at a storage unit not too far from 101/280 interchange. that's where "today in the bay's" marla tellez just arrived on scene. what can you tell us about what happened? >> we can see a lot of smoke coming out of the building behind me. we can also smell a lot of smoke. it's very smokey out here. very irritating to the eye, in fact. it's a fresh fire. you can see this as you make your way on 101. we came from north san jose and made our way to story road and the smoke very visible to drivers today. i spoke to an employee who works for this company that's in front of where this fire is taking place. it's a nam nating company. he tells me he gets here every day at 6:00. and soon after he arrived he smelled the smoke. he ran outside, called the fire

department. they were here within five or ten minutes. they've been on scene since about 6:15 this morning. he tells me the building ha is on fire is, in fact, a public storage united on felipe avenue. we can't actually see the source of the fire. i haven't been able to speak to the firefighters because clearly they're doing their job, busy right now. but as soon as i'm done with this report, i'm going to do my best to gather more information to find out how they're doing knocking down this fire. i haven't seen any flames, just a whole lot of smoke out here. so hoping to have an update for you. certainly in our first live update at 7:25. we'll give you the latest. but for now, a storage unit, the public storage facility on felipe road is on fire with about three fire trucks on scene. that is the latest from here in san jose, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> marla, thank you very much for that update.

in another story, moving on, a man is dead and the driver under arrest after an overnight crash in san jose. according to the chp the car was taking the bascom avenue exit from northbound 880 at about 10:40 last night. that driver lost control on the curve and the car flipped across the concrete barrier right onto the on-ramp to northbound 880. officers say that car rolled at least three times before finally you can see it landing upside down on that on-ramp. the passenger inside the car sadly died at the scene. the 23-year-old driver was taken to the hospital suffering with some minor injuries. that driver has now been arrested on suspicion of dui. the family of the young woman who was shot and killed in downtown san jose now speaking out for the very first time. the family of 19-year-old kimberly chico telling nbc bay area she was a nursing student at san jose state and she was about to start her sophomore year at the school. they say she graduated from

independence high school in 2012. kimberly was killed early saturday morning near the intersection of second street and san salvador. police right now hoping somebody, anybody will come forward with some kind of information because right now they have no suspects and absolutely no leads. they do not at this point think she was the intended target. 6:54. a town hall meeting is planned for victims of a massive apartment complex fire in redwood city. a six-alarm fire ripped through the hallmark house apartments on woodside road back on july 7th. one person died, 20 others were hurt in that fire. almost 100 people were left homeless. the cause is still under investigation. tonight's meeting starts at 7:00 at the fair oaks community center on mill field road. it was one year ago today the chevron refinery burst into flames pouring toxic smoke to the skies in richmond and sending hundreds to the

hospital. yesterday chevron agreeing to pay $2 million in fines and restitution. some of that money will be going to richmond build which helps put people to work. despite the settlement, richmond has decided to move forward with a lawsuit against chevron. the clock is ticking to the next possible b.a.r.t. strike. now we know when a special board will convene to look at the issue. the independent review board appointed by governor jerry brown is set to hold a public meeting tomorrow morning at 10:30. during that time, the panel will hear arguments from both sides about what's holding up contract talks. it will then put together a fact-finding report for the governor who will decide if a cooling-off period is necessary. laura can tell you commuters have another concern besides the b.a.r.t. strike. ac transit issuing a strike notice to the agency's board of directors. if there is no contract in place, workers say they will hit the pickett lines starting tomorrow morning. that means no bus service.

about 180,000 people use ac transit each and every day. this morning protests are still on the steps of a historic post office in berkeley. we've got a live look at the downtown post office on alston way near milvilla street. protesters have been camped out since july 24th trying to prevents the sale of the 57,000 square foot building. they're concerned about the privatization of public services, and this protest is one of dozens going on at post offices across the country. >> the berkeley post office has been here for about a century. it's a historic building and it's got beautiful art inside. it's been serving this community in a dedicated way for many years. we don't want to lose that quality of service. we don't want to lose our historic building. we don't want to lose our great union jobs. >> the postal service says it's being forced to close hundreds of offices because of the

decrease in mail volume and the economy. right now back to the breaking news out of fort thomas, kentucky. reports of a shooter going into an office, a workplace situation here and firing on the people inside. at least one person was hit and that person has been transferred to uc medical center. witnesses telling us this just happened not too long ago. you can see the police on scene there right now investigating the situation. again, this is out of fort thomas, kentucky. witnesses saying a shooter opened fire inside of a workplace office one person was hit, taken to a nearby medical center. we will continue watching this one and keeping you updated on information as more corporation into our newsroom. also watching the markets, a steve jobs look alike ringing the opening bell. checking the numbers. let's take a look at the opening markets this morning. that's ashton kutcher on the

they remain this morning in san jose. this is a live look at the 101/280nterchange this morning where you can clearly see the smoke billowing in the air. it's an industrial area close to rancho del pueblo golf course. earlier it was pretty thick and black. we knew a structure was on fire there. then it turned to white. now it looks like it's billowing up again. that's a tough one for fire iters because you don't know what's in some of those actual storage units, the public storage facility. also a statewide amber albert issued for two children from shaig county. authorities believe the suspect, james dimaggio kidnapped the children after killing their mother. he's believed to be driving a blue nissan versa and he may be headed to either texas or canada. >> that's what's happening "today in the bay." we're back at 7:25 with a live local news update for you. >> we'll continue doing that
