good morning to you. it is 6:01. i'm marla tellez in nor laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. happy to have you along. happening right now, an out of control wildfire growing quickly in southern california near the town of banning, about 20 miles west of palm springs where temperatures there are expected to get into the high 80s and 90s in some areas with the winds blowing hard to about 20 miles per hour. we can tell you right now one person has been airlifted to a hospital suffering burns. two firefighters so far have been injured and dozens of buildings are damaged or destroyed right now. we can tell you also 1500 people in the area are now under evacuation orders. let's give you a live look from our chopper down there over that wildfire. more than 500 firefighters on

scene now working, battling very hard trying to get a handle on this blaze along with five helicopters there and five air tankers. we also learned crews from san mateo county and santa cruz county have gone down to help fight the fire. there is no word on exactly what has caused the fire. now to breaking news in texas where an overnight shooting spree has left at least four people dead and four others injured at two homes in the dallas area. we just learned two of the injured are boys, 11 1357and 13 years old. one man is behind bars and police say is responsible for pulling the trigger first in dallas and then in the nearby home of desoto. when police got to the scene, they found four people with gunshot wounds, two people were

pronounced dead right there. authorities say the same man fled to nearby desoto where he opened fire again, killing two more people and wounding two others. lelene smith says her daughter and granddaughter are among the dead. >> i came back in and went to nia's room. that's where i found her mom. hopefully they didn't suffer long. >> ms. smith says the shooter was her daughter's boip boyfriend. no word on the condition of the her four victims. in oakland police continue gathering more information as they look into the disappearance of sandra coke. officers left her home with two bags of evidence yesterday afternoon. coke, for the record, is an investigator for the federal defenders office. she was last seen sunday night when family members say she was going to walgreens and she never

returned. they had previously said she was going to meet somebody who found her dog which had been missing for months. both of coke's cell phones were found in different parts of the east bay, and officers are now investigating her cell phone records. it is 6:04. he survived the crash of asiana flight 214 at sfo, but more than a month later he says he cannot escape the physical pain or the nightmares and now he's suing. 60-year-old henry xie says he cannot leave the bay yar until he recovers from a cracked jaw, strained neck and shattered vertebrae. he and his wife filed a lawsuit against the airlines in the u.s. district court in san francisco claiming gross negligence and seeking at least $5 million in damages. the college professor says he isn't sure if the pain will ever go away. >> the bone was broken. for my injury, i don't know if there will be some -- can heal

or not. i don't know. >> attorneys with the airline have yet to respond to our request for comment on the lawsuit. wle have much more of this exclusive interview coming up at 6:30 in a live report from "today in the bay's" christie smith. no news is not always good news as no talk between b.a.r.t. and its unions are expected today. we can tell you the board will be holding one of its regular meetings. both sides laying out grievances yesterday to a special three-member panel appointed by governor jerry brown. that panel will present its findings to the governor but it will not be making a recommendation. that is ultimately up to governor brown himself to decide if a cooling off period is needed. during yesterday's hearing b.a.r.t. and its unions couldn't agree on the numbers. b.a.r.t. says the two sides are about $62 million apart on the three-year contract. meantime, the union says the difference is only $56 million.

if the governor does not order that cooling-off period, do brace yourselves, b.a.r.t. strike could happen on monday. students holding a rally at a local courthouse demanding their ap test scores be reinstated. students at mills high school in millbrae filed the lawsuit against the college board and ets earlier this week. the organization invalidated hundreds of students' ap test scores because of a seating chart violation. while ets is arranging for a retesting period late they are month, many students say they don't have sufficient time to get ready. the time now is 6:06. if you took that leap of faith and bought one of your tickets, we suggest you take a very close look right now. the latest powerball drawing made at least a dozen people a whole lot happier and richer this morning. >> most of them are from california. people who got the second place tickets. they were one number off from the $448 million jackpot. nine name the state of california got second place. that's roughly $290,000, and one of those second place tickets was sold at this shell station in sunnyvale at lawrence expressway and lake haven. numbers are 5, 25, 30, 58, 59, powerball 32. again, this shell station sold one of the tickets that has the first five numbers, just not the powerball. we spoke with the owner within the past 45 minutes. he's telling us he's waiting for one of his customers to come forward with this winning ticket. >> somebody came yesterday and bought $70. probably him. >> you think it's him? >> yeah, maybe. i'm thinking, yeah. >> you're going to get a little cut, too. >> we'll get some commission. >> that's not bad.

happening now, out of control wildfires in banning in riverside county. you can see the smoke in the area from this chopper. nine square miles are now burned. three people including two firefighters are injured. 1500 people are under evacuation orders. the cause is under investigation. now live pictures underway in nashville, tennessee. look at this. heavy rains triggering flash flooding there. so many homes under water. >> you can see people sitting on the car. >> and on the roof as well, just trying to get to dry ground. high rain chances throughout saturday here in nashville, heavy rain, frequent lightning with the storms. they've already had 35 inches of rain fall this year alone.

that's six inches above average. >> looking for safety anywhere they can find it. right now let's get you updated on the day's other top stories. a shooting spree down in the dallas area has left four people dead and four others injured. investigators believe the gunman shot four people inside a home in dallas. he then fled to nearby desoto where he shot four more people. a suspect right now is in custody. one of the victims of the asiana airlines crash at sfo is suing the airlines. 60-year-old henry xie filed suit in san francisco even though he lives in china. he's able to file suit in u.s. because his son bought the ticket in the states. he's seeking $5 million in damages. the latest powerball drawinging has made a whole lot of people a lot richer. three people hitting the big-time jack pochlt they will split a cool $448 million. got a nice ring to it.

two of those tickets were actually sold in new jersey, one in minnesota. at least nine other tickets matched five numbers. one sold at a gas station in sunnyvale. a brand new south bay library is caught in a funding fight between the city and county of santa clara. we have new video of the north side branch library on moreland avenue near the river mark shopping center. the city set aside more than $19 million for this library. $11 million has already been spent and the construction is almost done, but there are no books, not a single book on the shelves. the high brlibrary is setting e. under state law the money should have been transferred to schools and special districts. the county just won a court order freezing the city's former redevelopment assets which means the library project is in limbo. library supporters are rallying

at the construction site on sunday morning and hopes the library will one day be allowed to open as planned. the time is 6:16. we know in this modern world apps do just about everything. here is the question. can an iphone app make your baby smart smarter? >> a prominent children's advocacy group says no. >> the campaign for commercial-free childhood. these are the same people who called shenanigans on the value of baby einstein videos, now turning their at tones apps like this one from fisher price. the group says educational claims made by these apps are overblown. a highly anticipated app goes live later today called mixed bit. it's another video camera app with the ability to import other people's videos and edit them into yours. it's from these guys. you recognize these guys. they created youtube. chad hurley on the right has been talking about mixed built for months now. he is very excited about it.

right now, we want to show you live pictures out of nashville, tennessee, just serious flooding. heavy rains and flooding just damaged that area. multiple water rescues and road closures are happening all over that area. you can see cars submerged about halfway under the water. we've seen video coming in of people having to climb on top of their cars and roofs. you can see those people right there on top trying to avoid

this water just coming in. estimates of five inches in some areas. that looks a lot deeper than that, what we're seeing in those areas near davidson county. the police down there and our emergency rescue crews are telling us the areas are impassable. heavy rains all the way through saturday. might be rough for a long time. we'll keep you posted. it's 6:26. you are probably familiar with the iconic running of the bulls in pamplona, spain. who needs spain when you can do it in the bay area? on june 21st of next year, these guy also be running through streets of the bay area known as the great bull run. organized by a couple guys in kentucky who apparently have a whole bunch of bulls. they'll stop in ten cities over the next year, including a yet-to-be-determined area in the bay area. the question remains why would anyone want to do this? >> why does anybody want to do anything dangerous? it's the thrill, the adrenaline rush that you get from putting

where he opened fire all over again, this time killing two more people and wounding two others. lalene smith says her daughter and 17 granddaughter are among the dead. smith says browser was her daughter's boyfriend. >> i've been telling her for the past two years to leave that guy alone. he had a history of violence. he drew guns and knives on his estranged wife. she divorced him. why my daughter picked him up to this day i don't know. >> that suspect was arrested at the second scene after reportedly running out of ammunition. no word yet on the exact condition of the other four victims. but we have learned two of the injured, they are young boys, just 11 and 13 years old. it is 6:32. an amber alert out of san diego is still in effect this morning and now the focus is on oregon. investigators say the suspect's nissan versa may have been shotted in california near the

oregon border. police say the suspect, james lee dimaggio may be trying to get to canada. he's accused of kidnapping 16-year-old hannah anderson and possibly her 8-year-old brother ethan. the body of the children's mother was found in dimaggio's burned down home near san diego monday night. a child's body was also found in that home which police say could be ethan. police say they will not be able to announce the identity of the child until tomorrow at the very earliest. more than a month after the crash of asiana flight 214 at sfo a survivor says he cannot escape all the physical pain or even the nightmares. now he is suing. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live at sfo with the interview you will only see on nbc bay area. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. henry xie tells us that he somehow walked out of that burning wreckage that day that's still sitting here on the back side of sfo this morning. he tells us he still suffers

from the physical pain of that. he remembers the plane slamming to the tarmac, asiana flight 214 but isn't sure how he ended up with a cracked jaw, strained neck and shattered vertebrae in his spine. xie has spent a mouth recovering in the south san francisco hotel. the 60-year-old says he can't return home to china just yet to his job as a professor until he can sit through the 11-hour 234r50i9. he filed suit in u.s. district court in san francisco seeking $5 million in damages. i sit with the seatbelt, but maybe not tight enough. because the impact was strong, the bone was broken. for my injury, i don't know if there will be some -- you know, can heal or not.

account for the fog this morning, give yourself extra time, even more so than yesterday. ññ we see the low cloud cover spanning inland. we have a steady mist, drizzle at the immediate coast. that will be the case until about 11:00 a.m. still mostly cloudy from the north bay to palo alto. then you'll get sunshine at the coast, but only between the hours of 2:00 and 5:00. nonetheless, we'll take what we can get. free air conditioning continues to pump onshore. 79 degrees is the forecasted high inland. bay side today 69 and 57 degrees at the coast. what you can see of the golden gate bridge, it is pretty dangerous out there. slick conditions. let's check on the drive wour own anthony slaughter. >> you can see the fog shrouding in the golden gate bridge. in the north bay right now there is a single-car accident on 101 southbound near north golf course drive. that's keeping things slow through petaluma.

report. this is in davidson county. rain is expected through saturday there. >> doesn't sound like it's going to get easier any time soon. we'll keep you posted as it progresses. 6:41. startling video out of china showing a bus full of passengers rear-ended by a semi. we want to warn you, some of this video may be hard to wash. surveil land video shows the driver and passengers being thrown right through the windows, sucked out like a vacuum as the bus flips on its side. the driver apparently missed an exit and tried to stop and back up, then it was rear-ended and slammed by a big rig. you can see the impact here. wow, the driver of the big rig we're being told was killed. the 22 people on this bus, all of them were injured, but somehow amazingly they all survived that crash. you can see some of the people immediately getting um and trying to move around right after impact. that is mind-blowing. >> amazing they were able to ger up that quickly. it is 6:41.

people are being stranded on top of their homes. some sitting on their cars. they're waiting to be rescued. national fire department teaming up with the office of emergency management. they've got boats out there trying to rescue the locals there in town. unfortunately rain is expected through saturday. not able to tell how many inches have fallen there. definitely significant rainfall. the good news we can report, no flood-related injuries or death investigation been reported. this is all under way in davidson county in nashville, tennessee. much closer to home. also happening now, a massive wildfire still in southern california burning out of control. we can tell you at least nine square miles have burned near the town of banning in riverside county, about 20 miles west of palm springs. these live pictures we bring you, you can see the smoke billowing into the air. the fire has been very intense and very big there. overnight the fire damaged or destroyed dozens of buildings, about 1500 people in that area

gotten a little of their wish. they were hoping overnight with the cooler temperatures and the higher humidity they would be able to get handle on this fire. it appears now, as you can see, they have done so. this is starkly different from what we were seeing overnight when the flames were encroaching on this mountain and making it very difficult for firefighters to gain control and the upper hand. i'm also going to show you a little built of what's happened now with the sunrise. you q see that the smoke is still lingering very heavy here in the air, low-lying smoke making the air quality out here very unhealthful. this is another factor that the fire tighters are having to deal with as well as the people hear's evacuated from their homes. so far the number of people evacuated ranging in the area of about 1,800. so planity of issues going on out here as well. but firefightersq really hoping that this morning's cooler temperatures was going to give them the upper hand. as we mentioned, this is called

the silver fire and it's quickly charted 1600 acres. this fire started at only a few hundred acres but grew to thousands within a matter of a few hours. firefighters knew at that point they had a demon on their hands. homeowners watched everything they had burned. some tried to use garden hoses to fight the flames. giving all of those that watched this take place a level of desperation felt out here. with the nightfall firefighters tried to level the playing field, hoping these cooler temperatures would help. you can see from the live pictures it has helped, at least apparently so far. the hope here is that the o progress made overnight will continue throughout the day. so now new evacuation, mandatory evacuation orders have been taking place here in this area. many of these people forced to flee their homes. as you can see from the smoke and the ash that we have been encountering throughout the morning, that the dangerous

conditions do continue and the containment here at this point is at hero. a lot of work still to do. reporting to you live from banning for "today in the bay." >> this is about 20 miles from palm springs which is where you're from. so you know, and you were mentioning that the winds are always a problem there. >> you can definitely see how her hair was blowing in the wind. wind is a big problem in that area. just to give you a better idea if you know where casino murango is, it's in that general vicini vicinity. this is also in the same area where we had to deal with the mountain fire. they've been getting hit hard in riverside county. here in the bay area, we've been getting absolutely spoiled. a mom in palm springs and sister in nashville. taking a live look here, foggy conditions, foggy conditions. that's all we have to worry about here in the bay area. nonetheless, you know how that fog works. it drifts around. it's hard to tell when you'd lootds visibility. sometimes you can litz just like

last night. four people were shot, two died at that scene. authorities say then the very same man fled to nearby desoto where he opened fire once again, this time killing two more people and wounding two others. lelene smith, simply heartbroken. she says her daughter and 17-year-old granddaughter are among the dead. >> my other grandbaby knocked on the window. we could hear somebody gasping for breath in there. and he said, granny, they're listening to headphones. i said no, that's not a headphone. [ sobbing ] >> that's difficult to watch. smith says another tragic part of the story is the shooter was her daughter's boyfriend. the suspect was arrested at that second scene after reportedly running out of ammunition after firing all those rounds. no word yet on the condition of the other four victims. but we have learned two of the

injured are boys. they are just 11 and 13 years old. back here in the bay area, the investigation into who gunned down a 1-year-old boy in oakland and his father continues this morning. family members say drew thomas and his father andrew were shot and killed while sleeping in their bed around 3:00 yesterday morning. the two were visiting from fresno and were in town for the funeral of a cousin killed on saturday. police have not release add motive. but relatives think this shooting is related to saturday's homicide. police say they have arrest add man in connection with saturday's deadly shooting. kendall eatman is in police custody in connection with 18-year-old alquino rivera's killing. new video of a church vandalized in a south bay. a church volunteer telling our photographer on scene somebody broke into the st. john the baptist catholic church in
